Our daughter is home from college and wanted to try De Fasios 216 for dinner. We made reservations and added she has a Nut allergy. We arrived 10 minutes early and were pleased to be seated right away. Inside is beautiful. One complaint about the inside is how loud it is. There is nothing to dampen the sound of all the guest speaking. The waitress came over and at times couldn't hear us either. The waitress was quick to provide us water and ask about drinks. Once she provided drinks, she asked about appetizers. They came out quick and were very very good. Foccacia and Meatballs. That's where it goes awry. We ordered 2 pizzas. 40 minutes went by without additional drinks or the pizza. Others in the dining room that were seated after we received our appetizers received their meals while we waited. There was a moment where the waitress looked over, and realized that she had not checked on us or we had received our pizza and you could see panic come across her face. 10 minutes later, she decides to stop at the table and apologize because there was a " rush on the kitchen, all at one time" however there were five tables in the dining room that were empty in an additional five tables in the bar area that were empty and no one sitting at either bars. We finally received our pizzas, however, you could tell they were rushed as the crust was not crispy and still doughy.. She apologized for having us wait. However, that did not make up for a very bad experience. As always, we ask, would we come back? And to be honest, in Troy there are so many opportunities for us to have Italian or to make our own Italian that I doubt that we will ever make it a second attempt. It's too bad because we love Troy and we love DeFazio's pizza from the original location. I wish them luck and hope that they can figure it out. read more

I was excited to try this new restaurant in town, but was quite disappointed with our experience. The interior is beautifully designed with lots of seating, a full bar, and an open pizza oven area. Naturally it seemed like the perfect place for dinner! We decided to split a traditional cheese pizza and the chicken parm which turned out to be the perfect amount of food for the both of us - and some leftover. The pizza was great! Thick crust, classic marinara, and a generous amount of mozzarella. The chicken parm on the other hand was a disappointment. The chicken itself was too thick and dry, although a good portion size. The pasta was a complete miss. Flavorless, bland, and undercooked. The dish was also topped with cilantro which I thought was odd. For $27 and one of the more expensive items on the menu I was expecting it to be a lot more flavorful. Our service was sadly also not good. Our waitress was also a bartender so she got busier throughout the night with people at the bar. We ordered and she checked in on us once. We were waiting around awhile trying to catch her attention to get the check, but after 15mins another waitress ended up helping us out. I have been trying to get in here for months. It was so difficult to get a reservation and I knew why, it must be great! I love Defazios pizza and I have been to their original location countless times. Unfortunately I must have come on an off night, or is it always like this? The dining areas were gorgeous, I loved all the details and decor, the fun wallpaper, and the open kitchen. It was very loud in there, hard to chat, but it was a busy Friday night. We started with drinks, all the cocktails were good, I loved the manhattan. To start we ordered the buratta with eggplant. It was served with pizza crust which I loved. Unfortunately the dish tasted like nothing. I was expecting delicious caramelized roasted veggies, and instead it was barely cooked eggplant and tomatoes with olive oil. I think the kitchen lost the salt and seasonings for all the dishes this night. This dish was not good. I found salt on an empty table and that helped us get through most of the dish. The pistachio pesto pizza was probably the best thing we ordered, but still, it was not what I expected, and the presentation was off putting with the pickled red onions. The flavors were good though and the crust was excellent per usual. The pasta dishes I was excited for also completely underwhelmed me. The pasta for both dishes was very al dente to a fault, it was too chewy and an effort to eat. The Cajun chicken Alfredo had good flavor, but the chicken was woefully over cooked and stringy. The carbonara was almost insulting. It tasted like nothing, at all. You couldn't taste the pancetta, there was no color to the dish which should be deep in color due to the egg yolks, we barely touched this dish. I took it home and doctored it up for dinner the next night. After a marathon of disappointment, we ended on a good note with the Hangover cake, it is delicious and moist, no notes. My partner and I had a really pleasant date here on a Friday night. We walked into a beautiful and boisterous dining room -- definitely don't except to be able to have quiet conversation here, it is LOUD and you will be raising your voice to talk to your dining companions. Their drink menu, especially the wine list, is extensive. I opted for a strawberry gin cocktail which was well-balanced and delicious. We took a chance on the arugula salad, both thinking it might be too simple, but were so pleasantly surprised by how good it was. A big bunch of arugula dressed in a lemon vinaigrette with Romano and crispy garlic and shallots, we could not stop eating it, and we're still talking about how much we liked it days later. We've been fans of DeFazio's pizza for a long time so we knew the pizza would be good, the roasted garlic and eggplant one we got had some really nice char and was the deliciousness we expect from a DeFazio's pizza. The one entree that was bit disappointing was the Cacio e pepe. I prefer this dish with the traditional bucatini, but this one is served with linguini and it fell into the pitfall many Cacio e pepe's can fall into -- it was clumpy. When done right Cacio e pepe is smooth, but the cheese broke on this one so while it had a really nice strong peppery flavor, the texture was off. Granted our waitress did forget to put this order in initially so I feel like they might've rushed it, which might be why it was not prepared correctly. We finished our meal with a very generous serving of a silky smooth tiramisu; I did find myself looking for a bit more of a coffee flavor but it was a tasty dessert nonetheless. Overall, I really like what they're doing here even though there are some things I wish were done a bit better and I'm definitely going back for that arugula salad! read more

DeFazio's at 216 in Troy recently opened down the street from their original DeFazio's Pizza, which is still open. The building at 216 4th Street was redone nicely into a modern full service Italian restaurant & bar which presently has a main dining room with tables, a full service bar with seating and chefs table seating along the open kitchen where you can see the cooks prepare your food fresh to order and two woodfired pizza ovens. There is also another separate dining room adorned with framed pictures on the wall. The food menu offerings at DeFazio's at 216 are similar to DeFazio's Pizza with some offerings only served at 216 including pizzas, homemade pasta dishes, salads, appetizers, and desserts. They also have a beer, wine, and cocktails list. The prices are moderate high, slightly higher than the Pizzeria. It's dine-in only and there is no takeout offered at DeFazio's at 216. After a long day of driving with another 3 hours still ahead, I decided to have dinner at DeFazio's at 216. I have really enjoyed their pizzas over the years growing up in Troy. I made a reservation online beforehand. I did receive a phone call from the restaurant informing me they had early availability if I opted to stop by earlier. Upon arrival, I was promptly seated at the Chefs Table and surface was cleaned. I was given a menu, but I already knew what I wanted since I decided earlier. For a starter, the Ricotta Dip ($12 plus tax) was served cool and comprised of whipped ricotta cheese with roasted red pepper pesto, tomatoes, roasted garlic and soft pieces of flatbread for dipping. This starter was a great choice For an entree, the Short Rib Ragu ($27 plus tax) had very tender pieces of red wine braised short rib, peas tossed with homemade fettucini noodles (very al dente). After enjoying half of this entree, I requested a container and the server took my food and boxed up in the kitchen. Since it was getting very late, I requested the check, which was $40.50 (cash)/$42.12 (card) with tax and before tip. Overall, I like this place, especially where I can enjoy fresh pasta. I made sure to order items available at DeFazio's at 216, but not on the menu at the Pizzeria. The service was prompt and I received my starter and entree in quick order at the same time and a chilled bottle of cold water was left with me so I could refill with water glass during dinner. We had some really great food at De Fazio's! We were in town from Denver and our friends said we had to go with them. Between the four of us and a toddler we ate a focaccia, Caesar salad, two pizzas, and a pasta. All of the food was delicious. My least favorite was probably the salad, as I thought it was a little over dressed. Service was a little underwhelming, as they didn't come around a ton. If I was local I'd definitely go back, but maybe a weekday so it's less busy. read more

I like a lot of things here. The meatball appetizer is 5 stars. The pistachio pizza is yummy. The hangover cake is moist and delicious. I like it here a lot. But. And I hate to say this. The homemade linguine that comes with many entrees - is awful. The texture is off. It doesn't seem to have the flavor of the sauce. Honestly, I'd rather have ronzoni. I feel terrible even thinking this because it reminds me of the opening scene in Big Night. But I'll bet a survey of everyone would show a strong preference for Ronzoni. Waitress was great. When we arrived to our seats at the Chefs Counter (ideal for two), we were a little concerned that it took a bit to get a waitress to take our drink order. However, our fears were unfounded as once our orders were in we were served quickly and every consecutive round we ordered was quickly taken and served. The ambiance is beautiful, we were able to watch the pizzas being cooked right in the pizza oven. The food was delicious from our Ricotta dip appetizer that we ate so quickly we didn't even think to take a picture of to the pizza and salad to the dessert we took a bit of a gamble on (I wasn't sold on olive oil on gelato but it's live changing). The Chefs Counter was a fun experience, the young men working the counter are friendly and focused, they'll join your conversation if you talk to them and won't lose concentration. So looking forward to the new restaurant because the pizza is amazing but what a let down I am so sorry to say. We ordered 2 chicken parm's , 1 white lamb bolognese, and a carbonara. All of it needed more flavor. Chicken in the parm was dry and too thick, sauce needed much more flavor and a little spice. Pasta was undercooked and tasteless. Maybe a different fresh pasta for each dish? The carbonara was ok, same pasta was used and it needed more pancetta, overall they all needed flavor. Maybe hire a chef consultant studied in Italian flavors? Cocktails were ok and service was great! Too loud music and loud conversations over music makes it less enjoyable not to mention hard to hear the server. Our party of seven ordered 3 appetizers to share. They came ONE AT A time and it took so long for the last one I was going to cancel it and then it showed up. They were all good. Mind you they were all cold apps so no cooking required. Five pizzas were ordered and two pasta dishes. The pastas came out first. The orecchiette was hopelessly bland. Pasta people were done with their meals by the time pizzas started coming. Again the timing was off. Waiting for one straggler. We all liked our pizzas. Dessert another timing issue and coffee took too long. They were all delicious ! Another home run for Troy, New York. Defazios's 216 brings Troy a creation of the Defazios's traditional Italian with a hint of contemporary Italian cuisine. I have been trying to get a reservation since they opened. This week I got lucky enough to secure a place in line last night. To clarify a few questions: this location has no takeout. The menu is different than the pizzeria up the street which is still open both for takeout and in house dining. Their garden dining at the old location is open now for the rest of the season. So there's two reasons to go to Troy Both of them for one of the DeFazio locations. Back to my review: My reservations were for 5:30 PM. I arrived a bit early and was seated right away. To be honest it was very weird sitting in Defazios's ordering a cocktail. Weird but in a nice way. I ordered a bourbon meat ($14). The price seemed in line with the going rate however, the pour was a little weak. As a weed for my guest to arrive, I had ample opportunity to look at the menu. As soon as my date arrived, I ordered an antipasto. Upon arrival, I asked if I could have some bread. They brought me a focaccia bread that was very tasty and went well with their salad. I was surprised that there was a ($5) charge for the bread as most restaurants that comes complementary. For dinner I got the Cacio E Pepe and my wife got the chicken and artichoke risotto. My dish I had them add some anchovies with the hot oil to kick it up a notch. My dinner was done to perfection. The portions we're generous giving me just enough to bring home for lunch the next day. My wife entrée was delicious as well. The only complaint was that some of the artichoke leaf were very stiff and inedible. Flavor was on point. Being full, we decided to bring home a couple of small desserts. My wife ordered a cannoli, and I tried to order the lemon genettes cookies. As I went to the men's room, I noticed in the back they had two ginormous trace of them fresh out of the oven. The waitress came back to my table to inform us that they were not allowed to sell those cookies at the restaurant. If I wanted them, I could walk up to the pizzeria. This was very weird as it wasn't like they didn't have them in the house. Couldn't understand why they wouldn't want to sell six cookies. Nevertheless I decided I would walk up the street and get the cookies. Overall, the atmosphere of Defazios was very pretty and put together well. The bar was impressive in the open. Kitchen is always welcome. I always find it. Fascinating to watch people in a busy kitchen working in unison. Well, comfortable and pretty, the acoustics leave some room for improvement. High exposed ceilings wreak havoc on conversation. Finally, the waitress Catherine, who waited on us was Fantastic. She was attentive, personable, and dressed and acted professional. Well like others my schedule and their hours did not make it easy for me to visit this Restaurant. I however really wanted to vistit it as I heard they are a new place to get some fine food. I had their pizza once before and it was good so I felt their new place should also be good if not great looking at the menu. I made time on Thursday night with my daughter to visit this place. Made reservations for early dinner 4:30 as we wanted to beat the rush they claimed that they were full for later with reservations. On entering the Restaurant the amblance was very pretty but the loundnss of the room would have caused me a problem as I prefere a quiter atmosthere to be able to talk. The server was very nice and offer choice of waters. We both were looking forward to a good cocktail before relaxing over dinner. I ordered a Manhattan and daughter ordered a Martini. Upon arrival both drinks were in a gollbet type glass with much less of a drink gotton in a normal Restaurant to our disappointment. However price wise normal pricing you would expect to pay elwhere but getting a nice cold full drink. So we at this point were disapointed but said maybe we will be surprised with dinner. She ordered clams in a cream sauce (Little Necks) I ordered fettuccine with red sauce and their homemade meatballs (pork and beef). My daughter got 4 Little Neck clams in a white sauce with hardly no chopped up clams, while I got a dish of fettuccine with marinara sauce an 4 tiny meatballs. No bread or other condiments such as dipping oil. In all honesty the meatballs were tasty but neither of these meals for the price were to my standard. The pizza at DeFazio'a 216 is amazing! The ingredients are fresh, it was cooked perfectly (not burned like some other wood-fired pizza, and the service was excellent. The only opportunities for improvement are the wait time and the noise from the oven area. It took a VERY long time for our pizza to come to the table. The place is hopping, but the wait seemed excessive. Also, one of the people cooking the pizzas (or perhaps prepping the dough) would basically throw the empty pizza tins when he was finished, making a very loud crashing noise each time. It was bad enough that even adults were jumping every time he did it, which was often. Totally not necessary and very distracting. Aside from those issues, our experience was great, and the pizza is second to none. read more

Yesterday we went to defazios at 216 for my sisters birthday. It was the first and LAST time. Our waitress was great, but one of the hostesses was extremely rude. My brother and his boyfriend wanted to join us and we respectfully asked if it could be accommodated. We were told yes and a smaller table was pulled up. At one point she (hostess) walks over and loudly says "are y'all going to be having anybody else join because you only made a reservation for four." Now, while I completely understand why she asked it brought about unwanted attention in an already uncomfortable environment. I told her no, she walked towards two of the servers POINTED at us and proceeded to talk about it as they all stared. She also continued to watch our table throughout the evening which resulted in my wife crying from the anxiety/embarrassment. It's unfortunate because we spent almost $300 and the food was magnificent, but as a woman of color I would not recommend that establishment to anyone who wants to have an inviting experience. read more
