a neon sign for zota's restaurant and bar
Ian W.

I  remember the good ol days when the popular Notty Pine was on 15th Street, crawling distance from the RPI campus. My family enjoyed their pizzas, wings, club sandwich plates, pasta dinners, and frosty libations.  The Pine is back again, in Brunswick in the former Two Brothers Restaurant & Bar. Like Notty Pine (established in 1946), The Pine is owned by the Zotto family and I can remember the Grand Dad served as the longtime athletic director at Troy High School close to three decades ago. Go Flying Horses!!! I stopped by The Pine for dinner on a busy Friday night. The parking lot was very full but I found a small spot before the upper overflow parking lot. I entered through the left bar entrance and the bar was packed with customers. I decided to be seated in the right side dining room as the staff was cleaning off tables. I was given food and drink menus after I was seated. It took a while for a server to take my order after being seated as the hostess looked over several times. As I was about to order food, I was informed that they ran out of some menu items including no pizza, which was actually my first choice for a starter. I instead started out with a bowl of Pasta Fagioli ($5) which had plenty of al dente shell pasta , cannelloni beans, seasoning in a thick tomato broth. I was also given a basket of buttered bread. For dinner, the Chicken Parm with Spaghetti ($16) was a right sized portion of a deep fried breaded chicken cutlet topped with melted mozzarella cheese and homemade thick tomato sauce with a side of thin soft cooked spaghetti. The dish itself was very hearty and filling to eat. I did need a box for half the food to bring home. The check came out $23.59 including 4 percent surcharge on each menu item and then 8 percent meals tax on top of that. I think the reasoning of the surcharges is probably for credit card customers and they're also using the Clover check system which has been a junk system at other restaurants compared to restaurants using Toast. Some restaurants add a credit card surcharge to the check or give cash discounts. I paid cash on this visit and I'll let the server keep the $1 difference. If that is the case, then they really need to show two different totals on the checks, one for credit cards and the other for cash as some other restaurants already show both totals and the differences. I plan to order pizza on the next visit, but I'll make sure to get here early.

Naturally it seemed like the perfect place for dinner! We decided to split a traditional cheese pizza and the chicken parm which turned out to be the perfect amount of food for the both of us - and some leftover. The pizza was great! Thick crust, classic marinara, and a generous amount of mozzarella. The chicken parm on the other hand was a disappointment. The chicken itself was too thick and dry, although a good portion size. The pasta was a complete miss. Flavorless, bland, and undercooked. The dish was also topped with cilantro which I thought was odd. For $27 and one of the more expensive items on the menu I was expecting it to be a lot more flavorful. Our service was sadly also not good. Our waitress was also a bartender so she got busier throughout the night with people at the bar. We ordered and she checked in on us once. We were waiting around awhile trying to catch her attention to get the check, but after 15mins another waitress ended up helping us out. We came on the slightly earlier side for dinner, but it was still a Friday night so by 6pm the place was packed and very loud.

I haven't been to this original location on 4th St. in Troy for a few years. The family operation is nearly 100 years old. Remarkably, it's very much as I remember it. A tiny place with three tables. Some of the seating looks like repurposed church pews. The youthful staff, friendly as always. They were running into some delays as orders came pouring in just before dinnertime. They'd have to check to see if they could fit our order for a big pizza with pepperoni, mushrooms, onions and peppers. They squeezed us in! Since the wait would be between 20-30 minutes we kept ourselves busy by checking out the desserts in the self serve refrigerator. I picked out a slice of "hangover" (alcohol) cake and I devoured it before our meal arrived. It was so delicious and naughty fun to eat our dessert before the meal. The pizza was fantastic when it arrived. I prefer crisp crusts-- this one was not-- but it was awesome just the same. My friend and I were so hungry that we consumed half of the pie before I realized that we hadn't photographed our delicious pizza. The remaining half was boxed and taken home to be enjoyed for a couple more days. The staff was so ready. They came to our table with the box and we settled up our bill. A lot to be said for tradition and quality. I've also visited DeFazio's in Albany, but I have yet to visit the relatively new restaurant up the block. Thanks, DeFazio's, for another great meal.

That's $5 for a dozen steamed clams. I've received the emails. I think I saw tv ads, too. They've offered this special for years. I regret I didn't show up before because the clams were delicious! They also came out of the kitchen super fast. And the promotional worked, too. The large parking lot was packed with cars. All around me. I could hear people ordering dozens and dozens of clams. "How many dozens of clams would you like?" the server, Nichole, asked me. She was fabulous at her job. She was attentive, friendly and helpful with a winning smile. The only condition to the promotional is that diners need to order a drink or an entree with their clams. I only ordered one dozen clams because I wanted to save room for an entree and Saratoga water. I had the Chicken Marsala which was great. So was the warm, freshly baked bread which went well with the Saratoga water. As for ambiance, it's a pretty restaurant that serves as neighborhood gathering spot. The patrons, especially the ones at the bar, seem to know one another. It's a place where people come to talk, so there is a din, but it's a sign of people having a good time with good company and food. I never found the noise level to be excessive. I wish I had photos of the interior to share but all of the tables around me were taken and I don't photograph people dining out without their permission. I actually think the restaurant deserves more Yelp stars than it has. I look forward to coming back and you know, I'll be ordering more clams.

The house salads were traditional with creamy Bleu cheese dressing shredded carrots cabbage cucumbers cherry tomatoes and olives. The iceberg was fresh and the salad plate chilled. Rosanna's -- A Genuine Gem That Deserves Every Star There…read moreare restaurants you visit and forget, and then there are restaurants that stay with you long after the last bite. Rosanna's is firmly in the second category -- and after an exceptional dinner that left both of us completely satisfied and already planning our return visit, I cannot recommend this place highly enough. From the moment we walked in, the ambience set the tone for the entire evening. Warm, inviting and thoughtfully designed, Rosanna's strikes that rare balance between intimate and lively -- the kind of space that feels equally suited for a romantic dinner for two or a celebratory night out with people you love. The lighting is soft without being dim, the energy is buzzing without being overwhelming, and every detail of the room communicates that this is a place that genuinely cares about the experience it creates for its guests. The service matched the atmosphere perfectly. Our server was attentive, knowledgeable and genuinely enthusiastic about the menu -- not in a rehearsed, corporate way but in the way that only happens when staff actually love where they work and believe in what they're serving. Questions were answered with confidence and warmth, dietary considerations were handled graciously and without any fuss, and the pacing of the meal felt exactly right. Not rushed, not forgotten -- just perfectly timed. It is the kind of service that makes you feel like a valued guest rather than just another table to turn over. Now the food -- where do we even begin. We started with the Shrimp Balls and they were an immediate knockout. Perfectly seasoned, beautifully presented and gone far too quickly. The arugula dip alongside them was bright and fresh -- a genuinely clever pairing that elevated what could have been a simple appetizer into something memorable. This dish alone would be worth coming back for. For mains we ordered the Wild Mushroom Risotto -- elevated with a grilled shrimp skewer addition that turned an already outstanding dish into a complete and deeply satisfying meal. The risotto was everything a great risotto should be -- creamy without being heavy, deeply savory with layers of earthy mushroom flavor, finished beautifully with truffled pecorino that added just the right amount of richness. The shrimp skewer on top was perfectly grilled, plump and fresh -- a brilliant pairing with the earthiness of the mushrooms. Our dining companion ordered the Boneless Beef Short Ribs which arrived tender, deeply flavorful and beautifully plated -- the kind of dish that makes you close your eyes on the first bite. What makes Rosanna's truly special is that everything works together -- the room, the service, the food and the overall feeling of being genuinely well taken care of. This is not a restaurant that relies on one strong element to carry the others. Every component earns its place. Whether you are celebrating something special, treating someone you love or simply in search of a great dinner in wonderful company -- Rosanna's delivers on every level. Do yourself a favor and make a reservation. You will not regret it. And the pellegrino soda was great I got the blood orange! And we took the olive oil orange cake to go yum!
