    Chicken bone in bussup
    Zarin B.

First time trying trini food and at first I was a little overwhelmed and not sure what to order. But standing in line, I listened to what everyone else was getting and decided to try a regular double with tamarind and pepper sauce ($2.50), and a chicken bussup with mixed sauce ($13). The speed and expertise of the man behind the counter was cool to watch. And the food! Omg yummmmm! The chicken curry was reminiscent of the Bengali chicken curries I grew up with. Love that they use every part of the chicken for the bone-in chicken. And it was SO much food for $13! But the double was just epic. I will dream about it until I can go get more. The tamarind and pepper sauce takes it to another level. It's messy but finger-licking level good. Ugh give me more please.

This place has been around for a while and I've passed it so many times without stepping in. As a Caribbean woman, I have to take my curry seriously. Cause not everybody knows how to do curry right but De Hot Pot is doing something right! So far I've purchased the chicken doubles and roti, boneless and with bone. And I conclude that I prefer the boneless option better. Hear me out, the curry tastes a bit different from the dark to white meat but I prefer the curry with the chicken breast. I know...surprise surprise! It just tastes a little different and personally, I prefer it. It much easier to eat without the hassle of the bones and it's so tender and juicy!! Omgggg I also have had the beef roti, separated which is yummy! They're a neighborhood gem and Only Take Cash. So bring your wallet but don't forget the green stuff.

My family visited yesterday and it is clearly very popular. Being gluten free I can't participate in the roti. I did try having the spinach/ bhagi, which I did not enjoy it was bland and not not done trini style. It is a cash only spot so walk with cash or there is an ATM at the door. There are many trini drinks such as orchard and solo.

A very good place for Trinidadian food. De Hot Pot is another hidden place in Flatbush and Lefferts Garden. It doesn't look like much. But don't judge of course. The food is kickass and there's plenty for meat eaters and vegetarians. It has a counter to order at. It's just a very small place. There's only three tables. Most orders are carryout. The good thing is this food often is portable. Rotis are probably the most popular item. These are like wraps. Get them either with a meat or just vegetables if you like. Vegetarian ones are $9 and are filled up. In these are spinach and sweet potatoes. These are a pretty big size. Carryout is the most popular way to order because there's not much room inside. It's cash only. The food comes out quick and there's usually not a long wait.

    De high prices.

During my first visit I ended up grabbing goat doubles which was essentially chana masala and stewed goat in between two soft pieces of bread. The flavor was excellent with a bit of spice and a slight sweetness to everything. I was shocked when my buddy payed for this order as it came out to a bit over 5 bucks. Sorry, I'm just surprised when I see affordable eats nowadays! During my most recent trip to A&A, I tried the beef foil bowl. The staff there loaded up a small foil bowl with rice and peas, stewed beef, and some cabbage. The portion was huge... In terms of flavor, the beef was well seasoned and cabbage had a great texture. Both my experiences here were positive with my only disappointment being that they were sold out of oxtail during both trips. Hopefully I can show up early enough to try the oxtail before I leave. If you're in the area and looking for some affordable and tasty carribean food, give this spot a try.
