I heard about this restaurant's currants rolls and had to give them a try. The restaurant offers takeout only, so there is nowhere to sit. The line was pretty long. However, service is pretty quick and organized, so customers were tended to quickly. I got to the restaurant at around 2pm, not realizing that they don't serve currants rolls until 3pm. I ordered a Shrimp Lo Mein. Honestly, I was underwhelmed with my dish. While I had never had Trini Chinese food, I thought that it would've been more flavorful than this. It wasn't bad, it just wasn't as delicious as Trini food usually is. I also had their paratha and felt like something was missing. I went back at 3:00 for the currants and coconut rolls. My God, they DID NOT DISAPPOINT!! Those were the most flavorful and moist currants rolls that I've had in over 20 years. And trust me, I've been searching for the perfect currants rolls. I don't know what the options are for Chinese food in Trinidad, and I assume this dish was tailored for local tastes and ingredients in Trinidad- all fine and well, but this simply won't fly here. If you eat the house special for memories of home, ok- I get it. For everybody else? You can do better, c'mon. The fried rice, lo mein and chow mein had identical flavor. I say this won't fly because in NYC (or even crown heights Brooklyn) you don't have an excuse. Trinidad Chinese is the type of Chinese food I grew up eating, so this spot is wildly nostalgic for me. The Asian flavors amplified but still its a very unique twist. It's not that they've tried to change the original Chinese recipes but more with having a major Chinese population in the Caribbean and back then having had to use local spices/ingredients that were more abundant than than the traditional ones. It's a mash up of culture just like everyone in the Caribbean. Anyway.. food now - history you can Google. The line is ALWAYS out the door. This is they way it is, and the way it will stay. It does move along but that's to place orders and they you wait again for your food. Thisbis take out, the space is not too big but the staff moves quickly . Food is prepared when you order no hot tables with food displayed , so again if you dont know what's in what Google the items on the menu before you go and be ready to order ( also have a back up of other options because its likely that one or 2 of your items have been sold out ,especially depending on the time of day you go. On display is the bread and bakery items. Even if you didn't intend of getting those the smell of freshly baked items with rope you in. Often the inside line is customers waiting for certain items like the Currants Rolls in the oven. The staff is really good at giving you the end baking time , so you can pay and come back to pick up bakery items . Come back in the time they give you ,not hours later, that's not how it works . The food is fresh as it is prepared when you order. Typically 10 to 15 mins . The food is piping hot - I'm not kidding. My hubby had the chicken lo mein and it was still hot when he finished the last bites. Prices are good and I think the bakery prices are really on the low end . I waited in line for almost 45 minutes, but it was totally worth it. Cash only. I tried a vegetable roti, which came with chana, aloo, spinach, and pumpkin. The roti itself was soft with a flaky filling in between the layers. The vegetables inside were all very pleasant - the spinach mild and stewed, the pumpkin sweet and spicy, aloo full of warm spices, and the hearty chana. I also tried the veggie chow mein, which isn't a noodle dish - only stir-fried veggies. It was also good, but nothing particularly different from any other American Chinese takeout spot. My stepmother ordered some food from here for me because we were coming to visit from out of state. We wanted 12 doubles, rotis with goat, boneless chicken, and bone in chicken. Being that my stepmom was buying this the day before my visit, the lady at the store hooked it up and put all of the roti skins wrapped in paper, and all of the stewed meats in plastic containers. Love that the curries had potatoes in them. The doubles are fantastic here. The tamarind sauce was a hit here and I love the kuchela. I wish I had more of it!!! A big variety of Trinidad sodas. These are some of the best doubles I've had. I've had their regular doubles and shrimp doubles on two occasions and they were delicious both times. I also had their chicken roti which was tasty and the dhal puri was nice and soft. The place was somewhat crowded when I went but I received my food quickly. I'm not sure if it's always like this, but there was a long line of people waiting outside Trinidad Golden Place Restaurant on a random Friday afternoon. This seemed like a good sign. Once inside and tempted by so many fantastic and fresh baked items and an array of hot foods, I ended up buying way more food than originally planned. The vegetarian roti ($7), which included spinach, potato, pumpkin, and chana, was a big hulk that was so superbly spiced and delicious. We also loved the fry bake with salt fish ($4) and doubles ($1.50 with chana). We ended up sharing these three items over two meals. The currant roll (available after 3PM), coconut roll, and cassava cake were also terrific. Though dense, the cassava cake had a surprising kick of cardamom that made it all the more delectable. I was almost incredulous at the prices given the volume and quality of food. I already can't wait to return to try more. The line moved quickly. This takeout-only place is so much more than a bakery: it is an integral part of the fabric of the neighborhood, part of its culture. I have been coming here continuously since I first moved to Brooklyn more than ten years ago[1], and I love it. I particularly like their baked goods: from bread pudding to pound cake; from currant rolls to coconut rolls; from black cake to pone; from cupcake to coconut bun; from butter bread to sweet cake... everything I tried here is delicious. Many of their baked goods are made with kassava flour. Due to the fact that cassava flour contains more fibers and proteins that white flour, kassava flour baked goods seem to me a bit more dense and elastic than when you use wheat or all-purpose flour. It's also gluten-free. I mainly come here for their baked goods, but I would certainly recommend other things from the kitchen[2]. Their doubles are huge! As big as my hands, nice and fluffy, and super-flavorful. A COVID-related note: Although they installed plexiglass dividers over the counter, and the people who work the counter always wear a mask, when it comes to social distancing it is really hit or miss. At the start of the pandemic they had a guy by the entrance who would regulate access to the bakery. However, that is no more. Now it is entirely down to customers: On a Saturday you may have a line that goes around the block, and 15 customers inside the store. On another Saturday you may have just as many people in line, but only 5 customers inside . I usually stop by only when the line is very short, and the inside is not crowded, such as on Monday after 6pm. It opens at 10am. I've been here a few times and their food keeps on having me coming back. For one thing, they have an awesome hour of operation so whether it be morning or night, you can get your Trinidadian fix here (except Sundays). My usual go to is their double ($1.50), which is soooo good and I love how yummy it is. The two fried bread are always chewy but not greasy and their chickpea curry is delicious and thick. I love THICK. Also if you get their double, make sure you ask for their hot sauce as well. It really blossom up all the flavors inside. As for their roti, it's good too - nice and chewy skin. Their potato aloo pie ($2) is another hot item. The portion is huge and it hits the spot whether it be for breakfast, lunch or even dinner. It's basically fried bread wrapped in delicious potatoes. It is a bit on the dry side, but still so good especially when eaten with gravy. All in all, I like this place. The only reason why they lost their extra star is because the couple of times I walked in, I noticed the person behind the counter did not wear a mask. The mask just hangs on their chin. The roti was huge - definitely two meals' worth - and good with the added sauces, though a lot of it felt like mostly roti and not as much filling. This place exceeded my expectations from all aspects! The food, the service and the vibe! Being unfamiliar with Trinidadian food and the menu, we had many questions and the lady who took our order explained everything so patiently. She and the owner even gave us treats on the house that we didn't order! What is this unfamiliar hospitality that I don't experience living in Manhattan!? Even the customers in line were nice, chatting with us about their favorite items from the shop. Food wise everything was delicious, freshly made, and tasted like home cooking.
