We got the oxtail rice platter. It was delicious but lacks a bit of flavor. I've never had steamed plantains and it was a fun combo to try. My friend got the shrimp roti and it was huge! It's definitely very carb-y and sharable portion size. This place is cash only but they also have an ATM inside the store itself. There are no sitting areas but it's clean and there are a lot of room to stand but no tables. I think it meant to be a take out causal spot. read more

Listen my aunt in North Carolina loves roti so you know I had to buy her a few and they were so helpful. I'll tell you why because I'm a new customer; they have to trust that once I placed a large order of like nine roti I am actually gonna show up and pay!! Of course I did, of course it was delicious! Ox tail was a bit hard to eat (kind of tough and you gotta get in there with your fingers to get the cartilage off) -- not a first date food at all. THE GOAT THOUGH! Get this if you don't mind the slight gaminess of goat. Fall off the bone! And the potatoes in these! I got the peanut punch drink (so good and peanut buttery but a bit too rich to have with the already rich food) and mauby (not as good as the peanut one but amazing to cut through the richness of the food). I would not recommend. I bought doubles, pholouri and a curry goat with buss up. The service was pleasant, the lady behind the counter was very nice and the place was clean. However I was disappointed in the food. The food had a weird, unfamiliar scent so I was already put off. I tried the doubles, the first was ok, but the barra was dense not fluffy, looked like it was the pholouri mix, or it was stale. The second, the barra was raw. It was pasty and white had to throw away. My husband said the pholouri was too dense and tasted bland. The tamarind sauce was tasty but watery. The buss up was not as fluffy as it should be, possibly because they used too much oil. Based on what I had tried so far I didn't want to try the curry goat. Will not be returning. read more

Really delicious. I had the veggie buss up ($14). The roti was layered and buttery, and the vegetable curries it came with (spinach, potato, chana, pumpkin, dhaal) were great. Really disappointed with my performance on the picture taking of this. Ali's Roti shop feels local, having regular customers weekly that they know by name as soon as they walk in the door. It's cash only and affordable for an incredible amount of food. They do have an ATM in the store The staff was noticeable kind and warming and made you leave with a smile. The bone in goat curry had a good spice to it and the goat itself was so juicy. Do not skip on getting the extra pepper and tamarind sauce for 25 cents each. They are IMPECCABLE. I was in the mood for a quick, small snack and passed by Ali's yesterday. It's definitely a takeout spot but they have nice dark seating if you want to eat your food while you are there. They also have a surprisingly clean bathroom for a takeout spot, but I was in luck! There were maybe 5 people ahead of me ordering from the buffet style setup with 4 people working behind the counter, but the wait seemed long. when I got closer, I noticed one of the ladies were just standing to the side and the line was only growing. But, the woman who served me was straightforward, but explained Saheena which I ended up getting because they were out of doubles. Saheena is a fried dough with spinach- chickpeas, tamarind & pepper sauce were put in there. For $2 it's a steal, but I don't think I would get it again. I upgraded this place from 3 stars to 4 because of the service. You often don't hear "oh, that Trini shop had damn good service, the cashier was friendly, the owner held it down". The line was divided into two sections-order and pay (CASH ONLY-there's an ATM inside don't panic). The line was long but ran smoothly and efficiently and with great simplicity. Me: "Hey! Let me get two doubles, spicy with tamarind and two tings" Cashier: "Tings? Yah wan' green or pink?" I thought that was hilarious. Food was good (even tho they forgot to spice my doubles) and my Tings were icy cold and the cashier divided the food and drink in separate bags bc "Nah wan' no cold food!" I loved that... I ordered the boneless curry chicken buss up roti and alou-pie. I thought the alou-pie was good, nothing special though. Not something I would order again unless I wanted something cheap to eat. The pastry itself was pretty thick and not soft. As for the main dish, the roti, I was a little disappointed. It might've been my mistake though. I ordered the buss up because it came with more stuff added to it. Unfortunately the contents weren't stuffed in the roti like I would've preferred. Instead I had to tear off pieces of the roti and roll it around the filling. Speaking of, there wasn't a lot of chicken in my boneless chicken roti. That said, it was good but I've had better. I'm willing to concede that maybe I shouldn't have ordered the buss up. I understood as something else. Still, with all of that said I'm willing to come back sooner than later. Stopped by on a Saturday night for some doubles, which came out in less than 5 minutes. At $2 each, these doubles are a complete steal. Absolutely delicious, especially with the tamarind sauce, and big enough to stretch two for a meal or three if you're hungry. The location is cash only and takeout only. Ali's has the best roti in my opinion. I've been coming here years and now the inside is spacious and bright. There is always a long line inside to order and pick up. Make sure to study the menu, because once it's your turn, you have to know what you want. I always get the curry goat and boneless chicken for my partner. Very casual. They have 3 tables with chairs but it's more of a pick-up and go spot. Went at 1:40pm on Saturday and there were at least 10 people waiting to pick up their food but we were able to get our food faster than expected. Food: Pholouri- okay. Could have been more flavorful itself. The included tamarind sauce was amazing and provided most of the flavor. Doubles- good. The dough was a bit sweeter than I expected and would have liked. I'm more so familiar with the Ali's on Utica but I've tried the roti and bussup shut from this location. I prefer the roti at Utica but their bussup is like magic...so damn good. Ordering is a little confusing because people are waiting to hear their order not to place their order, you have to walk to the front to place orders. My food is always piping hot and again, so damn good. The price is reasonable and the service is good. The only real con is that they are cash only. read more
