De Kaaskamer, Amsterdam
Bruce K.

Our food tour guide - Hungry Birds - recommended Kaaskamer as the best cheese shop in Amsterdam and after my visit, I can see why. The shelves are simply loaded with cheese. Mild cheeses, strong cheeses, in between cheeses, accompaniments like meats and pickles. Great looking stuff. The gent behind the counter asked if he could help and I told him that I needed two different cheeses to bring home and perhaps about a kilo each. So he offered me samples of a couple and I liked them all. Tough to choose but I did and now have cheese to bring home. While he was in the back putting them through the vacuum sealer - cheese lasts for days without refrigeration if it's been vacuum sealed - I spotted a neat snack package that lasted all of about three hours before I ate it as my dinner. As for the cheese? It survived the journey back to the States just fine. I declared it to CBP and they had no issue with it. It's slowly being enjoyed as a reminder of my time in Amsterdam. Great selection ... but with the workers didn't seem to want to help .. shame ... we would have bought tons of stuff

We had heard so much about this place ... but the 2 guys working the day we went made our experience just average. Yes there is tons and tons of cheese but unless you know what you want the workers seemed impatient to deal with us ... since we were asking a lot of questions. We were willing to spend a lot of cash for a bunch of cheese but ended up buying just one small piece of goat and one small piece of Gouda. Would not come again, there is far more friendlier places that would be eager to help.

Cheese! ( End of review ) Okay fine, I'll expound a bit more..... Strolling around the canals, we could smell the delicious cheesy wafts from the corner of the street & gazing in the window, wheels & wheels of cheese are packing this shop, all the way to its ceiling Closed on a Sunday, we actually postponed our departure & made a point to visit Monday before we left Amsterdam because we knew it would be *that* good There was a line right as they opened but it worked out well since the line moved quickly yet gave the Mr & I enough time to decide what we wanted to order Small wedge of Truffle-Brie, along with 2 other harder strong cheeses came home with us......we advised the guy helping us that we preferred stronger cheeses from the local area & he reached behind him & selected 2 wheels Cutting off huge samples for us to try, we were more than impressed & opted for everything he chose for us.....1 was a creamy & strong sheep cheese & the other was a goat cheese with garlic & basil. Absolutely delicious! Also indulged in 2 sandwiches on fresh brown baguette.....everyone needs a now & later experience. We ate our cheese sandwiches in the car (an orange & while cheese but can't say what they were) & enjoyed the cheese wedges once we got back home to Germany A Must Stop! Note that they do accept credit cards but will charge a small percentage - cash is best

De Kaaskamer is a boutique cheese shop. It is less touristy and more for the locals and those who plan to eat the cheese within the next 48 hours. Everything is fresh and vacuum sealed for freshness. We stumbled in because I wanted to buy some cheese to bring back to the states. I ended up only with a mini wheel of gouda but we also got to sample a few cheeses. They have fresh bread and sandwiches to go. This is an excellent place to pick up some lunch (there are no tables but you can eat anywhere outside) or for food to put in your backpack during your bike ride. Prices are on par with the quality. You will get what you pay for and you will be very happy. It's amazing the selection they have and they are very friendly. Highly recommend for a top notch cheese shop experience in Amsterdam.

The best cheese shop -- bar none -- in Amsterdam. It's in the great shopping area of the 9 little alleys. Every type of cheese you can imagine, plus a wonderful selection of Dutch cheeses. Also, they carry a complete selection of Charcuterie. You can get Jamon Iberico for half the price of the US. They have a small selection of wines. It all makes a great meal for the hotel room. It also was the last place for me to to visit before going to the airport. I can't recommend highly enough.

An impressive selection of cheeses, olives, etc. It was a bit difficult to choose, given my lack of Dutch language skills. The staff offered to let me try anything, though, and tried to be more helpful than I would let them be! I ended up with a couple of great cheeses and the prices seemed quite reasonable.

Found this neighborhood cheese shop near where I'm staying. It is awesome! People are super friendly and helpful! LARGE variety of cheeses vacuum packed and ready to fly home in much smaller quantities. They even sliced a chunk of spicy cheese and sealed for me to take back to the USA. I would definitely recommend over the tourist like shops only offering 3-5 flavors in large wheels. This was a great find!!! Located in the inner canal rings!

We were able to get seated right on the window area. We chose menu 5, which was just enough for two people. Everything was delicious! Their pea soup is out of this world. Don't know why as it is a simple dish but wow! I also love their herring. It was so delicious that I wanted seconds. It paired so well with their onions and mustard. And their bitterballen was just enough bite. Creamy and crispy! We also got a combination of the hutspot. They were all delicious! Although for me the meatball was just a tad bit salty but it is probably just me! Everything else was spot on. I love their dessert at the end. It was a great way to end the night. Our server and their staff were all amazing! Very friendly and welcoming. Yes it is a tourist spot but totally worth it.

We did not have one but they were happy to seat the 2 of us and invited us to switch tables once another couple left (they were checking out). Small space, can accommodate groups of 2-4, cozy atmosphere, lots of the traditional blue and white ceramics on the wall (dishes and tiles). Traditional Dutch cuisine: we ordered the Boerenkoolstamppot with smoked sausage and Zuurkoolstamppot with smoked sausage and a slice of apple pie to share for dessert. The food arrived piping hot in about 20 minutes. It was sooo delicious--the tasty juicy sausage pairs perfectly the mashed potatoes with either sauerkraut or kale. The apple pie was also tasty--larger chunks of apple and more spices less sugar than American apple pie from what I can tell. Perfect with whipped cream. A must visit if you're in Amsterdam and want to try traditional fare. Highly recommended!

The Pantry - I hadn't had Dutch apple pie since my days waiting tables at Denny's, in the '80s & this was well worth the wait.

Located on the Rozengracht, it's super central and easy to get to from just about anywhere in the Jordaan or the Center. * The Atmosphere: It's dark, moody, and has a very cool "late-night" energy. Even if you aren't sure what it is from the street, the vibe inside is unmistakable. * The Food: If you like meat, this is your spot. The burgers are massive and juicy, and the ribs literally fall off the bone. * The Vibe: It's a bit louder and more energetic than a standard restaurant, making it perfect for a night out with a group or a casual date with great cocktails. It gets incredibly busy, so even though it feels like a "hidden" spot from the outside, you'll definitely want to book a table ahead of time. Overall: A total neighborhood win. Don't make the mistake of walking past it for as long as I did!

We entered and seated ourselves, and within 5 minutes, a staff person greeted us, brought us a flask of tap water (tastes great and clean) and two glasses, and gave us menus. We ordered a short rib sandwich for him and a chicken Caesar sandwich for me. These come à la carte but you can add sides if you want. I was glad we didn't because the portion was generous. One thing I've noticed here is that the bread is always high quality--our sandwiches came in baguettes about 8 inches long --I had to cut mine in half to eat it lol. Both were savory and flavorful and satisfying. The meat was tender and well seasoned. We savored every bite! They both had crispy bacon in them as well. Very filling! Just what we needed to energize us after our morning at Keukenhof!
