Great little cafe to stop for a bite when exploring the area! They have a lovely display of cakes in the window, tempting you as you walk by. We got the goat cheese sandwich, which was absolutely delicious and the chocolate vanilla cake which was quite good as well. Service is reasonably fast and very friendly. Reading all the reviews - I wish I could say I had a similar experience but, meh! I really have experienced so much better. The decor and setup of this place is so very cute. What lured my partner and I inside (besides hunger!) was the lovely window displays of homemade quiche, ricotta pies, and delightful looking baked goods. Coffee: Horrible. I tend to drink my coffee black, unless milk is needed to mask the taste and this was just super disappointing. It seems they got our order wrong at first, as after sitting down my partner had to get up to go back to the counter and see if the coffees had been made (I think they may have delivered them to another table accidentally). From our table I saw a cup of coffee being poured out in the back, and once I received mine I could see why - it was completely burned. Food: Meh, I went with the ricotta and polenta and my partner had a deli sandwich (turkey and cucumber). I think the service may have been a bit overwelmed that morning. From where we were sitting in the back, we were in a small table in the far corner right next to the ovens. I saw my order go into the over to warm, alongside some pies - the pies were taken out about 10 minutes later and wondering if the ricotta had been forgotten, I caught the servers attention walking past who pulled it out. By this time it was dry and unevenly heated through. It pains me to write this review because everyone in the cafe was quite nice and the setup if really quite lovely, but at the end of the day the food was disappointing, service slow and a bit jumbled, and almost too much foot traffic going into and out of the narrow cafe with people looking to peer out the back porch and see if there is any seating on the canal. read more

I'm so glad I stumbled upon this place after attempting to eat at Gartine, which is currently closed until August 2013! The first best part: all the quiches, pastries, cakes, scones, and other creations that are on display in the window. They look (and are) freshly homemade, look delicious, and are good-sized portions. The second best part: the interior. It's a pretty cozy cafe with an open mini-kitchen where you can see all the pastries being prepared. It's also very light because of the windows in the front and the door to the patio in the back. The third best part: the outdoor patio facing a canal. It only has 3-4 tiny seats with tables made of paintings, but it's enough since you're only eating pastries and sandwiches while drinking tea or lattes. The fourth best part: fresh squeezed juice - and many of them! I had the papaya, kiwi, strawberry, orange juice one. Mmm. They also had really good tea and coffee drinks. The fifth best part: homemade jam and lemon curd. My friend bought a jar because it was so good - I wish I had done the same! They had some interesting flavors - tomato rosemary and pineapple basil, but I'm sure they're as good as the strawberry or lemon. It's also part of a BnB, which I would probably like as much as the cafe. Will definitely be back next time I visit Amsterdam! read more

I am a total sucker for places like De Laatste Kruimel. Cute, kitschy, tiny, homemade, delicious, I just love it. And in classic Yelping fashion, I spent a few days trying to find this place after a friend and I walked past it in heavy fog around 3 AM and he said it was the best place in town. After several failed attempts I found it and bought myself a reward (and lunch). First off, this place makes their own lemon curd. This is automatically puts them in the six star category if such a thing were possible. Smeared on a lemon poppyseed scone and consumed in a sunny patio overlooking the canal and hustle and bustle on Rokin -- this is why I love living in Amsterdam. Just thinking about that moment makes me swoon. I also picked up a small sandwich for the road, which was still warm and toasty even after I had the chance to eat it over an hour later. The goat's cheese was slightly melted and paired with an olive-apple tapenade that blew my mind. It was an amazing and pleasant surprise to enjoy my sandwich that much. Next time I swing by, I am definitely picking up a slice of the courgette taart with lemon curd on top. Swoon. read more

I've heard great things about this place from a friend. So I decided to check this place out when I had a 45 minutes lunch break from work. The goods: The sandwich I had was tasty. The employees were very friendly and helpful. All the yummy stuffs (especially the sweets) are displayed in their windows. The pies and the tarts taste amazing The bad: none The so-so: Since all the desserts and quiches are on display in the windows, sometimes I felt like I was a fish being displayed inside an aquarium. :) But then again, some people like the attention. Amazing spot for a sweet laden brunch on the weekends! It gets really busy and if you find yourself a spot on their tiny balcony, consider yourself officially the luckiest person in Amsterdam, or at least one among them. They make fresh salads and quiches. Each week brings something different. A lot of vegan/vegetarian selections even. The trademark specialty is their banana breads, which is just so awesome. They also have loaves of chocolate breads, or a variety of different cakes and puddings, all made in store and with a loving touch. You can even see them meticulously slice the cakes and breads. The vegetarian bread pudding is a delight. Try it at least once. It comes in a couple flavors. Service is amazingly wonderful even if the crowds make their jobs so difficult. Let me start off by saying I'm pretty biased when it comes to cheesecake, as I truly believe Juniors Cheesecake in NYC is the best so u usually don't get cheesecake at other places; however, I was pointed into the direction of the wonderful little bakery because they have amazing everything, to include cheesecake. When I finally did find this place, as it is small and you can easily walk right past it, I could tell right away this place was going to be trouble. The windows are filled to full capacity between strictly desserts in one window, and quiche type baked goods in the other. Though I originally arrived at the location for the "cheesecake challenge" but after looking at all they had to offer, I was perplexed by the plethora of choices. I ended up getting the cheesecake after all, do to the suggestion of the cashier after I told her about the predicament I was in. As said in the title, the cheesecake was quite delicious, I would have preferred it more chilled, but it is the best cheesecake I've had outside of NY and that's saying something. This is one of those small treasures that really seems to try to be a step above the competition. It's fun to sit and watch the baker. He doesn't skimp on the ingredients. It's a small place and generally fairly full when we've passed by but in typical Dutch fashion there always seems to be one or two centimeters to squeeze into if you are willing to try. The quiches make a great snack or meal and the carrot cake is my gf's favorite in town. read more

The menu is good sized and had a variety of sweets to satisfy my tastes as well as those of my very choosy companion. Out back is a tiny outdoor seating section located on a canal. Very nice to sit with a friend in the sunshine, but the canal is pretty busy so not much privacy. Pro Tip: the "clotted cream" they market is actually whipped cream, so don't be too surprised when you get a pile of fluffy cream with your scone and not the heavy and dense true clotted cream. Overall, not too much to say. Good enough for a return trip, but nothing that I'll be devastated to never try again. read more

I came here with the lovely Alli K. on a weekday afternoon and the place is packed! TIP: In nice weather, there is an outdoor terrace in the back with extra seating, otherwise, wait 10-15 minutes and with some luck you can find a seat. Any party more than 2, good luck - take your snack with you on the go instead. I had a slice of raspberry cheesecake and mint tea, both were delicious and I will definitely be back to try some other things. Nestled in a side-street near Spui, this place is close to the Law school,a short walk from Rembrandtplein and a neighbour to the wonderful cafe 't Gasthuys. Each time I've been here the food has been superb. tasty and reasonably inexpensive delights, making a great breakfast or a small lunch. The perfect place to stop if you're in town on a week day. Unfortunately the De Laatste Kruimel can get REALLY busy sometimes, and regrettably the operation doesn't really scale well. This may well be sorted now, but their policy of heating each order up often leads to very long queues for warm food. I kept wishing they would just heat a bunch of stuff up and say here's the warm stuff, here's the cold, you choose. It's a decent size for a centruum location, but for a guaranteed sit down I wouldn't advise going at the weekends. Check it out,you'll probably love it. read more

It's an open kitchen and the girl with the long black hair (that ended up in my food) was handling food with her bare hands WHILE WEARING A BLOODY BANDAID ON HER INDEX FINGER. She also dropped a tomato on the floor, picked it up, wiped it on her apron and continued to cut it! She was ripping meat with her bare hands and putting it into the pie, while tossing her hair back during the preparation. She also took orders and handled money and the cash register whilst preparing this meat and tomato pie. My guy and I kept looking at each other like, "is this for real?? Are people seeing this?? Is anyone going to say something?" Then, there was another girl (a blonde girl who was washing dishes on the same counter as the meal preparation as bloody bandaid girl, and blondie had a bandaid on her index finger too!!! I mean, I understand accidents happen, but wear some latex gloves and use medical tape while your bodily fluids fill up a bandaid that customers see. I didn't care that I spent 5 euro on a savory bread pudding and didn't eat it. I didn't even dispute the purchase because I had to get the eFF out of there before dry heaving on the counter. read more

What a fucking delight this place is! First of all, we were drawn in by the insanely beautiful window of quiches and savory bread puddings. The other side full of sweets looked amazing but we were there for breakfast. Delicious coffee warm people. It's a bit tight but everyone seemed to like it it's cozy like that. Don't make the mistake of eating your quiche cold or taking it away. Have them heated up and eat it there. We had them make it and ate there the first day...the second day (in a row) we went, we took it back. The only reason I won't give this five stars is the pork and mushroom onion cake item was a touch soggy. Probably nothing to be done with onions in it. Also the quiche Lorraine was a little too salty for me, but everything else was 5 star! Here for 6 days, probably going to eat there at least once more. Oh my gosh! Translated in English to "The Last Crumb" this place was hands down my favorite restaurant in Amsterdam. It's somewhat hard to find because it is tucked in on one of the side streets but it is so delicious. I was in Europe for two weeks and this was the only restaurant I ate at twice during my stay. Everything is homemade and they have the most amazing food, staff, and decor. They serve everything from a cous cous salad, to sandwiches and soup, to desserts and you cannot go wrong with any of it! The only downside was that they only accept cash and if you're going there during a really tourist month plan on eating outside or standing up because there isn't much seating. I highly recommend going here though if you're ever in Amsterdam. read more

This place is one of my favorite little places in Amsterdam. There is seating for perhaps 2-3 couples, but I just love the cakes and sandwiches and coffee here. Everything is fresh, and the staff are so friendly. It is like getting baked goods from an aunt's house.
