The vistas are amazing at this Utah State Park, it is well worth the drive. The hiking paths are marked very well and not too hard. We actually liked this state park better than Arches National Park because it was less crowded and better information signs everywhere. read more

This place will come under one of the must see places if you are in the area. It is not as popular as the Arches NP or the canyonlands NP but it is very close to these and I would advise friends to stop here. The entry fee is $20 but the view is definitely worth it. we did not hike the rim but I can just imagine how beautiful it would be. We came here for sunset and drove to the Dead Horse point overlook. There were lots of people at the viewpoint but there was adequate parking available. The view was breathtaking and I was in awe of the beauty. The close up view of the Colorado river is beautiful. It was pretty windy and chilly so wear layers. This place was so peaceful that I just wanted to sit and listen to the wind and look at the views. This is the first location we hit as we arrived in Moab. If you a quick easy drive (all on pavement) this is a great way to get an overview of Moab and all that awaits you. A quick tip, go after 5 and the crowds are smaller and the guard is gone for the day. The views are incredible from this location!! read more

Arches was crowded so we went to Dead Horse SP, it was beautiful, absolutely stunning. Not crowded at all. We hiked from the Visitor Center to Dead Horse Point and back, only passed a few people the entire trail. You are rewarded at the end of the hike with an incredible view of the Colorado River. I visited Deadhorse State Park in late November as a part of my trip to visit the Mighty 5 National Parks in Utah. I stayed in Moab which is located around 45 min away and this park is conveniently located on the way to Canyonlands National Park. The main point is a FANTASTIC place to take some sunset and long exposure night photos. It's a beautiful lookout with a great view of the canyon below. I'd suggest getting there a bit before sunset and finding your rock to watch the sunset! FYI, the entrance fee was about $20 for a pass that lasts 3 days I believe read more

WOW what a state park. We were in the area for a week and decided to spend a half day here. My husband mountain biked while my father and I toured the park. My father is 85 so this was a perfect park for him to tour. He was able to walk to the canyon and see it. We spent about a hour sitting on one of the benches and talking. The park has some cute yurts that I would love to stay at some point in my life. We had a great picnic at one of the sites. There are a lot of the sites. We truly enjoyed our visit. My husband loved the mountain bike trails. Glad we came. read more

Loved this state park - it is one mile outside of Canyonlands National Park. It is a $20 entrance fee, and I felt that it was worth it. It has a similar landscape to Horshoe Bend, and it was beautiful! It was also clean and well-kept. read more

In A Nutshell: -Dead Horse Point State Park is definitely an underdog since it's right next to the more famous Canyonlands. -If you have the time/energy, I highly suggest you drive to this state park. -Yes, you'll have to pay $20, but it's worth it & when I went, I was told that my pass would be good for two days. -There are several trails & they almost all link together. -You can park your car at the large parking lot at the visitor center & start walking. -Make sure you use the map they give you at the entrance so you can plan your route. -I really enjoyed the Big Horn Trail, it's primitive, which made it that more fun to do. -Once you get to the overlook point, it's really breathtaking you'll also see many "potholes", which pools of water form (it feels like an alien planet). -Dead Horse Point is also worth checking out especially during sundown in the evening. -You'll find many couples enjoying the sunset there. If you are in Moab, you must do the drive out for a side trip. This park has dog friendly trails (arches doesn't). The only reason I found this place and wanted to drive out was because my curiosity of the purple spots I saw on google map (turns out that they are potash ponds). It is incredibly beautiful here.. views and all. they also have plenty of signage and a visitation center with so much information on the history of this park. read more

INSANE views. I highly highly highly recommend it! Some dumb teenagers were throwing rocks down the cliffs, which made me angry, but taking a deep breath and shifting focus to the stunning views overlooking Canyonlands National Park were all that I needed to forget about those silly people! Also, it is not very crowded here, and there's a good amount of parking available here. The state parks in Utah are really no joke. Amazing Scenery! Do make sure you visit! We just returned from an awesome family vacation in and around Wyoming. As we made our original plans, visiting Dead Horse Point was not on our list. Then, about four weeks before we left, I came across some reference and looked up its location... right outside Moab!!! OK... one new place to visit. We drove south into Moab, and the turn to get to Dead Horse Point SP is the same road that goes on a bit further to Canyonlands National Park. The drive is amazingly beautiful, winding through orange cliffs and across the top of the plateau, then arriving at the Park Entrance. The park is named for apparent abuse of horses, leaving them to starve / dehydrate high above the mighty Colorado River. A sad tale, to be sure. And yet that sad tale brings you to amazing beauty of the scenery. Dry? Yes... up there. Surely the river isn't. Beautiful? Amazingly beautiful. Not apparent from the map, the road drives to a very very short walk to a couple lookout porches, from which you can really take in panoramic views! As you drive in, as the point narrows, you can see potash pools off to the left/east. They apparently pump water into the ground and it floats up the potassium, which can then evaporate and be used for fertilizer and apparently many many other uses. The blue contrasts beautifully with the orange/brown desert. There is a sign that shares additional information. We do recommend visiting when you're in or near Moab! read more

Shocked this isn't a national park, to be honest. We only had an hour or so to visit, but it was totally worth the entry cost. It's gorgeous here, much more than Canyonlands, in my opinion. The salt evaporation ponds kind of ruin the overall experience for me as it's just so unnatural looking, but the opposite sides of the bend are breathtaking. It was so nice to just sit and listen to listen and the wind blowing with the incredible views. I'd love to come back and explore more of the trails, but we were limited in time, but the 1.5 hours or so we spent there were totally worth it! read more

I found Dead Horse Point State Park to be a must stop. I visited early in the morning as I was making my way towards Island in the Sky section of Canyonlands National Park. Like I had read in my research prior to visiting, you don't need too long of time here. It is $10 to get in and since I was there real early in the morning, there was no attendant on duty and I paid with the honor system. But, you drive to the Visitors Center where there's a short, simple walk to the start of this spectacular viewpoint. Btw, that's what Dead Horse is all about...an absolutely outstanding, unobstructed view of an amazing canyon!...not nearly as colorful as the Grand Canyon, but I found it to be a "mini version." And as you can understand, it's a wonderful view of what seems to be the start of Canyonlands NP. That's actually what Canyonlands (Island in the Sky) is all about....sights and scenery within an island surrounded by an enormous picturesque, canyon. For better views of the canyon....leave the Visitor's Center area and drive a little further within the park to the end, where you'll arrive at the most scenic portion. This was the pinnacle of Dead Horse Point. It was early in the morning and I had a beautiful sunrise. The canyon was extremely photogenic! This pinnacle...as I look back on my experience, sort of mirrored the Grand View Point of Canyonlands National Park...(which also was located at the end of the park)....like the grand finale of what you'll see at both places. Overall, although Dead Horse Point was very similar to Grand View Point of Canyonlands....it's certainly worth a visit. It's much less crowded than Island in the Sky and for the beauty of the canyon...you can never have enough viewpoints to witness nature at its finest! One more thing...on your drive to Dead Horse Point, there are loads of free roaming cows that literally stand and walk beside the road. Be careful as you drive and if you have a moment...stop and grab a photo with the herd of cows! It's fun especially for anyone who appreciates animals! read more

This park is worth the admission price!! When you see the view --incredible! View of the evaporation ponds is so stunning. There's a visitor's center and a natural museum that are both worth a look. The Colorado River bends around the canyon --just stunning! This is a state park and has a cowboy history. It's said that cowboys used to drive wild mustangs into this park and pen them with a brush fence. There's a 4 mile rim trail that's paved and easy to walk. There's a $10 entrance fee, there's also camping here. Park's open everyday 6am-10pm. read more

There are no water hookups in the campground, so it took a little bit of logistics to plan for five days with 9 people. The air is very dry and you will need at least one gallon of water per person per day. The campground has bathrooms and a sink with cold water to wash dishes, but no showers. The closest water, gas, food, and medical care is 32 miles away in Moab, so be sure you come prepared. There was also very little AT&T cell phone coverage (occasionally we could get a strong enough signal in the early morning or late evening hours to get some text messages through). The sites are spacious, paved, mostly level, have a covered picnic area, and 1-2 tent pads. Overlooks are gorgeous! We marked this on our itinerary of places not to miss during our road trip through Utah! We stopped at DHSP after leaving Moab, on our way to Monument Valley - it was only about 35 minute drive from Moab! We stopped in the visitor center, walked around and enjoyed the views. There are plenty of parking and pull-off lots with beautiful overlook points, each one more beautiful than the next! We went from point to point, driving to eat the differing vantage points. We ended up doing a combination of the West Rim Trail and East Rim Trail hike, very simple and flat surfaces - but the views were super neat! I would be upset if we skipped this; since there are PLENTY of big attractions and National Parks nearby, I could see how it could get overlooked - but this was definitely something to see! It's a massive crater, with craters inside of it. It's magical to look at, and staggering to consider the depth of the hole! The park itself has an elevation of 5,900 feet, and you're looking down some 2,000 feet above the Colorado River. The name, Dead Horse State Park mystified us at first, however once looking at the desolate desert landscape, we could only imagine the origins of the name. Looking out at millions of years of water and wind erosion, this place give meaning to 'visual history.' There are a bunch of areas which have this "International Dark Sky Park" classification from the International Dark-Sky Association - this is another one! Entrance fees were $15 for this park - they do not accept the National Parks Pass (since it's a State Park). read more

Came here on high recommendations from the tourist center in Moab. Purportedly better than the Grand Canyon. Ok it is charming and I love all of the the West in general but we can see the Texas Gulf Potash Pond out in the distance. WTF. Can we get rid of that from the view? In my opinion this is not the quintessential Colorado River Grand Canyon experience with all due respects to the locals who champion it. Horse shoe point near Page has better views when it comes to looking at horse shoe bends. Ok, I was here a little late in the day, after the sun has set, but I get the gist of the place. The Colorado River flows through here. DID YOU KNOW this is where Thelma & Louise was filmed for their drive off into the "Grand Canyon?" Within DHPSP exists a fabulous campground called Kayenta Campground. (Note: My Verizon wireless worked there, but was spotty or non-existent in other areas.) I highly recommend that you check it out, but make reservations far in advance. Entrance fee is $15. The younger guys working that entrance are very lackadaisical. About an hour from Moab and next to the island in the sky national park, this places offers a great view of the turn about of the river. Suggesting visiting during the morning or noon time since the gorges will have a harder time reflecting the sunshine. Price is 20 per vehicle, and takes only about 1.5 hours total to go through the park and get through the major points. Strongly recommended! read more

I would say it's not as busy as the other parks nearby for the sunrise. The restrooms were also extremely clean which rocks bc most of the time they aren't well kept. The only reason I am not rating this a 5 is that the views, though great, were not exactly what I expected. I've seen plenty of images of the horseshoe bend and the mesas and was anticipating that when we arrived at the final viewpoint. However, I then discovered that we were several hundred feet higher; the 'classic' view is from a dirt road (Shafer Trail, I think) that winds along a lower mesa/shelf. Given our schedule, we didn't have time to investigate what it might have taken to drive down to the lower viewpoint (like renting a Jeep, perhaps?). That being said, this park is well worth the side trip from either Moab or from the drive to/from Canyonlands NP. We had spent the morning in Canyonlands and were hungry. Research indicated that there was one spot (in DHPSP) to get any sort of food (other than what you brought yourself): Pony Expresso. They are located in the parking lot for the visitors' center, and we enjoyed a picnic lunch in the shade of the building There is a short nature trail that winds along a wall at the rim of the mesa, just below the center. It is worth a stroll for the views. We checked out the center as well before making the remaining short drive out to the viewpoint. This was semi-crowded when we were there (a semi-overcast day in early May). I'm sure it is packed during the summer. The views here are very good and there are also trails that lead along the mesa (we didn't check these out, having done some hiking earlier in the day). I would recommend this park if you are in the area. read more

This was my first stop in Moab! I actually prefer this over Canyonlands. I initially thought this was apart of canyonlands - Its simply a detour to Canyonlands. I arrived just after sunrise and I had the blessing of watching the world awaken on the ~40 minute drive here from Moab. Easy strolls and unobstructed view points galore. Various spots to explore in solitude with epic and infinite views. A couple shot engagement photos here as they jumped on tiny rocks to the edge of the cliff. I shot a yoga class here titled Escape to the Mountains | Yoga for Hiking, Road trips, and Traveling on YouTube. The sun was getting to me by 9am so head there early morning to avoid heat and human photobombs. read more

The view of the Colorado River from here is reputed to be one of the most photographed in the world - but I wasn't as nearly as impressed as I remembered from a previous visit. Timing is also important - with early morning shadows reducing the visual impact of views and photos. This State park is closer to anything else than Canyonlands National Park - and also less costly individually for those without an annual pass - but there is also less to see and do here. It's a LOT less crowded than Arches National Park. IF you also plan of visiting multiple other State Parks in the area, such as Goblins, Kodachrome Basin, Green River, Escalante Petrified Forest, Anasazi Museum, Edge of the Cedars Museum, or anywhere else within a year, it might make sense to ask about an annual pass allowing access to places you will probably end up paying the same or more to visit individually. read more

This is an AWESOME PLACE if your a Mountain Biker.. The Trail is family friendly with over 10 miles of trails to ride on from beginners to intermediate. Make sure to get there in the early morning because the heat rises fast and by mid morning the temps can reach well up into the 90+ range. Bring plenty of water and enjoy the trails.. Dead Horse State Park: I prefer this view over Canyonlands, so if you only 1 hour go here instead of Canyonlands. Fee for both parks is $10 per vehicle. Best Moab view in my opinion. Canyonlands National Park: Huge park with many trails for bikers and 4x4s. If you only have 2 hours drive to Island in the Sky section going west on Hwy 313 visit the green river and grand view point and do the 20min roundtrip hike to Mesa Arch. Arches National Park: Must visit for Moab. Give yourself at least 3 hours to drive through this park. Delicate Arch hike takes about 2 hours round trip to arrive right at the Arch or you can drive to the view point for a view from distance. read more

Dead Horse Point is a must see if you are in Moab, and Moab is a really beautiful and fun place to go so hopefully at some point you will find yourself in this lovely canyon town. The larger national parks nearby probably steal most of the attention away from this gem, but the lack of other visitors is part of the attraction. The gorgeous canyon cut by the Colorado features a back drop of reds and oranges that rival the Grand Canyon. The reason I would recommend Dead Horse Point over nearby Canyonlands is that it's much more easily accessible by car, they allow dogs on leashes, and it's only $10 per day vehicle. There are plenty of good viewpoints right off the road, and a nice fairly flat hike right behind the visitors center. The ranger and visitor center are on par with the other parks in the area, very knowledgeable and full of information and cool souvenirs. There is also some interesting folklore behind Dead Horse Point: a legend that a group of Mustangs was rounded up and abandoned here by some cowboys and the horses died of thirst and hunger. Dead Horse was also the canyon featured in Thelma and Louise. read more
