Strawberry pop tart pastries and coneles

Thank you Bread Queen for mentioning this place! What I believe to be another independent bread place but I like this one more. A few tasty pastry options on-site. Parking lot is small- I suggest parking on the side outside, watching for traffic carefully, and entering the premises. Elixir coffee in a coffee container might be outside. A small cafe would be nice with coffee equipment but then Dead King would need to be open to the public longer and more days. Weekly quality bread would be too much for me and I don't live close enough, but the distance is worth it for me for planned drives. Nestled with a lumber company in tow, and when I went, Chestnut Hill library pop-up was next to Dead King. it is sure a treat for a different food experience. You know it is local when a staffer, probably an owner?, asks me if it's my first time and if I'd heard of them from the Internet. I thanked the Yelp Bread Queen (There is a reason it is called Dead King- kidding) for bringing me here!! (P.S. 5/13/24: I play chess competitively. See a connection? Unintended pun that is now intended.) Strawberry pop tart pastry has a good amount of flavor and not too generic flavoring like Kellogg's. I also got chive and herb bread pastry and Black Olive bread not on the display case menu. The pizza dough container I got, I love the size but 500 F seems to be too high for the instructions for 1-2 hrs as my pizza burned too much after 49 minutes. This conele, which I got because I had no idea what it was, has slightly burnt edges for the flavoring with I believe a slight coconut filling. So good. Something maybe you could find at Maman, but this was (also) at Dead King. If you don't have a car and if you can walk, it is worth it. But you have to be really good with planning, bearing the elements, geography/using your devices to guide you well. Get off Ivy Ridge station and make the 8 min walk up a hill. Hopefully you don't get too sweaty. There's probably a bathroom to freshen up somewhere. Oh and don't get there early. In fact, this review should've been forbidden! Leave all the good things for me!

Finally had a Saturday free to go check out Dead King Bread's new retail space. Yay me! DKB began during the early pandemic days baking and delivering craft breads to people who ordered in their local area. Recently they decided to launch retail sales. They're tucked into a space inside Manayunk Timber (which is also a cool space). Good signage makes them easy to find. I feel a little like Dorothy entering Oz, the bright yellow floor leading me to the Wizard of Bread. This wizard is not a charlatan though! I picked a couple of loaves of their sourdough off the racks as I was waiting in line for the counter. They're a a handwritten list of what's available with prices. Today they had an experimental sourdough milk bread, only one loaf per customer. I of course got a milk bread, the traditional sourdough loaf, a slice of Orange cake and a coffee cake muffin. O how was it? AH MAY ZING. The orange cake was not crazy sweet, it had a hint of tart orange flavor which I loved. Light sugar glaze balanced against tartness without overpowering it. Coffee cake muffin crumbly & moist. Blueberries in the muffin added some pops of earthy sweet. The sourdough milk bread may be my new favorite bread ever. The softness of the loaf plus the tang of the sourdough .... Heaven. Staff were cheerful and attentive, not rushing customers but also not slow. Will I be back? Um YEAH. You should go too! They often sell out do get there early if you can.

$ well spent! A few additional cookies tossed in our delivery for free, made it feel like a better value since we had some leftover to enjoy with morning coffee. Anticipated a long wait given the time & day, but a friendly face handed them to us in less time than Domino's. The Deluxe cookies were a treat w/ the peanut butter varieties a fav, but ALL the cookies, including the ones I didn't pick, were delicious. A little annoying the upcharges for deluxe varieties when I thought that was the point of picking an option that includes them, but the additional free cookies helped soften that. A must for any overnight stay in Philly!

After we finished, they handed us a whole box of cookies just for hanging out and giving feedback. That was a solid surprise and super generous. I swing by Insomnia Cookies on random days too because sometimes you just need a warm cookie to reset your mood. They always come out soft, gooey, and fresh from the oven. The store itself is clean and kind of cool to look at. There's a whole wall covered in giant industrial-style on and off switches. I still wish I could have pulled one just to see what would happen. Staff was chill and genuinely helpful. They were patient while we tried to figure out which cookie was which during the ranking, and they kept the energy light and fun. Same when they handed out the free boxes. Whoever runs the HQ location clearly knows how to make the experience feel special.

This is my new go-to for chicken & waffles. Concise, excellent beer selection. And interesting, well-made cocktails. The banana cream pie is one of my favorite desserts anywhere. Staff is friendly. We ordered the crispy cheese curds (Wisconsin cheddar, smoked guajillo salsa, and charred scallion ranch). These were a unique take on the classic and I was here for it, definitely try these! I then had the wedge salad (blue cheese, nueske's bacon, cherry tomatoes, radish, pepitas, crispy onions, and thai basil goddess). There were no tomatoes on ours, and so we were given sliced avocado instead. This was an interesting attempt but not my favorite take on this dish, I probably would not get this again. However, the shrimp po boy buns came through to round off this meal! (crispy shrimp, smoky aioli, house made choppy chop, dill on two buttered potato rolls.) These were fantastic and absolutely fire. NOTE they are tiny, almost appetizer sized, which didnt bother me because after the salad and cheese curds I was feeling full already but I would go back and get two orders just for myself they were that good. All in all a great place, I recommend!
