I saw Dear Evan Hanson when I was in the city. This was a great show and the actor, who played Evan Hanson, Zachary Noah Piser was phenomenal. The show is ending its long Broadway run on September 18. If you haven't had a chance to see it, you should. A story of teenage self-discovery, and acceptance, something so many teens struggle with. It's a compelling heartfelt story that draws you in from the very first moment. This is a show you will not forget. It lives up to all the awards and Tonys. Watched the movie first, but the Broadway Show was still very impactful. The story opens up the conversation for everyone about mental illness and depression. It's not a happily ever after type of show, but ultimately, it is quite uplifting. The theater is very small, hence there really aren't any bad seats. Cast is about a dozen actors and production value was just okay. However, none of it was necessary to enjoy this musical. In the end, the touching script and amazing music should be enough. Sorry to hear this show is leaving Broadway. Seeing many tearful audience, I'm sure Dear Evan Hansen made an impression on most people. First time back to seeing a Broadway show since the pandemic started and really enjoyed seeing Dear Evan Hansen. Had expected to see Jordan Fisher in the lead role when we purchased the tickets but found out that the role had recently been taken over by Zachary Noah Piser and he and Gabrielle Carrubba as Zoe and the rest of the cast were absolutely terrific. Dear Evan Hansen is a contemporary Broadway show, as opposed to the classics that i typically think of when Boradway shows come up in my mind. I was in NYC for a quick work trip and decided to splurge a bit while on my trip, as I was staying at a hotel so close to the theatre. Mind you, the price was close to $200 for me..so it still wasn't anything cheaper even if it's not well known classics ones that people usually go for. I actually had no idea what the show was about..but heck..I was in NYC..so why not pick something very NYC to see, sit back and be surprised/entertained by it, right? Turned out it was a good idea. I actually never knew Broadway show could be so contemporary, too. I always thought of things like the Lion King and the likes when i think of Broadway...so a play re: something as contemporary as lives pertaining to millennial generations was a pleasant surprise to me. Overall, i enjoyed the show. I don't know if I could say I enjoyed it more than the classic Broadway shows though. Good performance..but i could also see why some people may not follow/like it as much, especially if you aren't as in tune to the current state of technology the millennials use these days. Overall, good show and a good entertainment for me. If you are seeing Broadway for the first time, however, I recommend going for /starting with the classic shows first..then perhaps try this show to broaden your experience of different types of Broadway shows out there. read more

This show isn't like your typical broadway show, it's not a feel good laugh out loud kind of theme so don't come into this expecting that. Instead, it addresses real problems around mental health issues, which is what makes this show so powerful and moving. We sat in right orchestra row L and had a fantastic view. The theater is small so there really aren't that many bad seats. We could see every expression on the actors, which is really key to enjoying this show since there aren't too many props or set pieces. It's really focused on the acting. Three words: DEAR EVAN HANSEN! This is one of the best shows to hit Broadway in a long time. We just saw it again last night, as it's Andrew Barth Feldman's final week in the lead role. And if ever there was a show that was tailor made for ABF's Broadway debut, it is DEH. I love Ben Platt; and find Noah Galvin to be wonderful in most every role he does. But there was something inherently perfect in Andrew's interpretation of Evan, capturing every tick, twitch and nuance with perfection, and adding an emotional layer that is vital to making both the character and the show work. The music is, well ... Dear Evan Hansen. Once you hear it, you can't forget it, or even stop listening to it. Even after three years, it's still on heavy rotation at home, as the hubby plays a few songs as part of his winding down and getting going routine. This is a show that every person should see. Random Friday, I got the notification that I had won the lottery for Dear Evan Hansen and with orchestra seats to boot. You bet I brought those tickets ASAP! When my friend and I arrived, we were a bit sad that Jordan Fisher was not performing that night, but the cast was still amazing and the show was great. The songs are really good and I can definitely see myself listening to the soundtrack again later on. It's a very modern show, dealing with very real topics and emotions. I do have to say that there were parts that almost made me die on the inside from secondhand anxiety. If you're a person who struggles with anxiety in real life - or secondhand anxiety at watching other people's anxiety, I would be hesitant in going to the show. The theater itself is beautiful and not quite what I had expected going in. Bathrooms are in the basement, so if you're in the mezzanine, try to leave your seats as fast as you can. read more

What an all-around marvelous experience! From my non-expert perspective, I really enjoyed the acting and musical talents! As for the story, it was very touching and heartfelt. Absolutely worth the $169 for the ticket (and some fees on top) Dear Evan Hansen is a more/modern contemporary production, with the very first production of it taking place in 2015. So it isn't yet as much a "classic" as Lion King, Chicago, or Phantom. Still, just because it's new isn't a reason to cross it off your list outright! Speaking of Phantom... if you've seen it recently, you would know the set design there was unbelievable. Evan Hansen's set design isn't at that level, but it isn't supposed to be! For the sake of the story being told, the set was perfectly functional in telling the story. As for the theatre, it was smaller than I was expecting, so I ended up with a much better seat than I thought I was getting! Take this with a grain of salt, but even in the back you aren't that far from the stage. A final note: if you're not from NYC and don't have access to the box office in person, call the theatre! This show does what a lot can't do: incorporate many different themes and seamlessly connect them into a plotline. Take that and add in on-point acting, singing, writing, casting, and stage scenery, and you have one of the top musicals on Broadway right now. The themes, in case you need to know before deciding to watch it and with whom, are bullying, depression, self-esteem, lying, teenage love, drugs, sex, suicide, parenthood, and high school growing pains. There are some comical moments, but it's a heavy show where all these things are discussed. With that said, it's a moving musical with endearing characters and a powerful message. Been to the Music Box Theatre before but attended the Dear Evan Hansen Broadway Show tonight. It is so great to be back in NYC for a Broadway show! Surprisingly enough, the orchestra seats are very comfortable with enough leg room and you don't feel like you are a sardine sitting next to people. The sound is perfect! I was seated in orchestra D6 and for this show, the seat was perfect! I could see the entire stage and what was going on! Now, on with the show... Great acting and voices. A modern plot. The winner of the Grammy Award®, the Olivier Award, and six Tony Awards® including Best Musical. Dear Evan Hansen is about the modern day life of kids these days. The suicides and suicidal tendencies and struggles that they face. The awkwardness of being a kid in the modern world. To be liked, to be known, and the world of social media. Ben Levi Ross as Evan is brilliant. The emotion that transcends from his singing and acting is amazing. However, it wasn't enough to give me the "feels"! It was great to see Christiane Noll in such a different role from the first time I saw her in Jekyll & Hyde. I thought the show would give me all the feels and emotions but somehow it lacked that. Dear Evan Hansen will be on the top Broadway shows for me. I really enjoyed listening to the original Broadway cast album prior to watching the show. It's definitely more of a play with singing performances. You'll not see dancing for this show as some Yelpers pointed out their disappointments in their review. My recommendation is to listen to the album first and read the synopsis. Then, you can decide if you want to see this Broadway show or not. The stage effects was kinda cool and you'll see a bunch of different panels lighting up social media websites as well. My favorite songs for the show were: Waving Through A Window, You Will Be Found, and Sincerely Me. The singing performance was great live. The Music Box theatre is small. Our seats were in the mezzanine level row J (left side) and the view was still good. The actors were also so kind in signing autographs and taking photos with the fans after the show too. At a week time for shows in New York I stumbled across the StubHub store on 39th and Broadway and whereas TKTS has last minute cheap tickets, Stubhub has last minute great tickets. For $150 I was able to get two Orchestra 5th 2 seats for this Tony Award winning show. The Music Box is a small theater so the seats were amazing! A unique show with no well known star, the show is full of new young actors, many making their Broadway debut. What I love is that the show was neither a revival or one carried by a star performer. The tenor of the show is a modern story that is very relevant in today's world. The music was unique and while the music is not something you leave the theater singing, it was very entertaining. Those who watch the show will have many opinions as well as interpretations. My companion and I both felt differently and even a heated discussion. I highly recommend the show for any parent raising a teenager whether you have a good relationship or not. I waited two years to watch this show and I'm sad to say I was very disappointed. The actor that played Evan, Andrew B. did an ok job, but his singing voice was not what I expected. But he played the role really well. None of the cast actually had a good singing voice. The plot of this show was also disappointing, and for a show that has been reviewed as a sentimental one, it was nothing like that for me. The makeup in this show was also terrible. PSA #1: "On Wednesday & Saturday matinees, the role of Evan Hansen will be performed by Michael Lee Brown. Current Hello, Dolly! star Taylor Trensch will assume the role of Evan Hansen beginning February 6." (Telecharge) I preface my review with this because many patrons who purchased their tickets months in advance or who aren't in the loop on NYC theatre news may not be aware of the recurring casting substitution preceding Ben Platt's departure from the show in November 2017. This notice isn't posted publicly anywhere conspicuous in the box office, nor is it printed on slips of paper in playbills. If you have $400 tickets, you owe it to yourself to at least know who you're paying to see. PSA #2: Yes, this show is about high school students and adolescent suicide, so the show's message will probably resonate well with high-school-aged children. That being said, there are plenty of F-bombs (mostly from the Connor Murphy character) and more mature themes within the show that will be inappropriate or incomprehensible to anyone who isn't old enough to drive. This ain't no Disney musical, but you're the parent so it's ultimately up to you to decide what's age-appropriate. Coincidentally, this show touches on that issue as well: parenting. I had the great fortune of seeing Michael Lee Brown perform as Evan during last Saturday's matinee show. He wasn't the Evan Hansen from the soundtrack, but he's the only one I've ever seen live so I still enjoyed with his singing, sweating, and awkward shaky hand bits. Other reviewers far and wide have already shared about how moved they were by the show, but I just wasn't one of them. Don't get me wrong: it's still great theatre with genuine tears and anguish and important social themes. Maybe it was because I'd played the soundtrack to death, watched all the videos on YouTube, read all the interviews, and followed every member of the cast on Instagram: at the end of the show, I simply didn't experience any of the life-changing catharsis that other viewers did. My lotto ticket was for a seat on the edge of the first row of orchestra, which was partial view because I couldn't see the stage floor or stage right. This meant that during most of the musical numbers on a bed or a couch, at least one of the actors was facing away. I was totally fine with this because no single angle shows everything and I was able to see some of the cast and crew enter through curtain gaps in the wings. Also, Kristollyn Lloyd and Will Roland came freakishly close to my seat, so that was a plus. Ushers will let you borrow booster seats if you're seated in severely partial view seats. The boosters are only about 3 inches thick, so you'll only get a slight improvement to your line of sight, but mostly they provide additional cushioning for your butt. You can literally reach up and touch the side of the stage if you're sitting in the first row. (To give you an idea of how close the first row is to the action, see my photos.) The pit is suspended in a balcony above the stage, so there's nothing between the stage and the audience. The conductor/keyboardist does his thing remotely from another room and conducts the cast via two monitors suspended from the mezzanine. The orchestra sees the conductor through smaller versions of these monitors which are suspended from their music stands. The Music Box staff are among the nicer ones I've encountered in the Theater District: no grouchy power-tripping retirees here. (I bet it's because of all of the famous audience members: Milana Vaynstrub [a.k.a. AT&T girl] was in the audience the day I went.) Even the lady selling stuff for BCEFA very courteously and non-judgmentally directed me to the whereabouts of the restrooms after the show. The stage door is right outside the box office on 45th, but due to the show's popularity don't expect to see more than one actor appear after each show, if at all. It seems like one shows up to sign playbills, takes the hit for the rest of the cast, then retreats back inside to meet-and-greet with whichever celebrity VIP happened to show up that day. Members of the crew and the pit also exit through this door, so they're available for selfies as well though I'm guessing they're just happy to be able to dodge the limelight on their way to the subway. Before I conclude, I'd like to add that plenty of people behind me were coughing during the show, possibly due to the cold weather outside or the damp air inside. This theater doesn't supply free throat lozenges the way Carnegie Hall does, so please bring your own if you're prone to coughing during monologues or extended periods of dramatic silence. Thank you. A must, must, must, MUST see! Saw this show when it just came out four years ago and Ben Platt played the lead character. I STILL cannot forget how incredible it was. Definitely in the top three shows of all times that I ever saw. A must see for all young [and not so young] adults. An absolute tear-wrencher. You WILL cry. And this is coming from someone who does not get teary-eyed easily. Balcony/mezz center seats are the best to experience the modern graphics/special effects of the show. The crowd was clearly there to enjoy the play. Their vibe made for an even better experience. The staff was friendly and helpful. Cheerful, too. The lie told is that NY isn't friendly. Wonderful contemporary musical with a serious subject matter. It is not for young children but I thought my 14 year old was at the perfect age and maturity to appreciate its message. Unlike more old fashioned musicals where the actors just burst into song, the music in Evan Hanson is part of the story. So why only three stars? I bought these very expensive tickets last Spring, prior to the Tony Awards. Although Ben Plato's departure had not been announced I knew when the musical's run had started so I had an inkling when t might be. When Ben's departure date was announced I was elated to find out my tickets were before that dates However, about 6 weeks prior to our date I received an Email saying Ben would not be performing on Saturday matinees and my heart sank. The Email did say I was free to exchange the tickets but being that late in the run, there were no more dates available with Ben. Plus, we had very little flexibility since we were coming from Florida. I went with an open mind but have the admit I was disappointed Not only was Ben Platt not performing but there was an understudy for Rachel Bay Jones as well! I had seen Rachel in Pippin and was looking forward to seeing her perform. Michael Lee Brown was good, but his performance did not nearly measure up to the performances I have seen of Ben Platt doing the same material. Michael has a pleasant voice but the range on some of the low and high notes was not there. Plus, he seemed to be missing some of the awkwardness and raw emotion that Ben brings to the role. The acting was just not there! For me, Garret Long in the role Heidi Hansen was okay but after listening to the soundtrack again, her acting and singing did not compare to Rachel Bay Jones. Kudos to some of the other actors who were absolutely fantastic including Will Roland (Jared Kleinman). He was often the comic relief and my son's favorite character. Mike Faist (Connor Murphy) was also excellent. I also got a kick out of seeing Michael Park (Larry Murphy) who I had watched play Jack for years on As the World Turns. Yes, i enjoyed the show but I never would have paid the I did had I known Ben Platt was not there. Listening to the soundtrack again has confirmed that for me. I know there is never a guarantee that a show's leads will go on but I thought it was kind of underhanded to make that kind of permanent change after tickets were sold. "Does anybody have a map, anybody maybe happen to know how the hell to do this?" I'm not quite sure how to write a review about Dear Evan Hansen. You know that feeling when you plan something for ten months, it happens, and you're left with the amazing memories but can't quite accept the fact it's over? That's a little how I feel admitting I finally saw Dear Evan Hansen. Thankfully, we caught the full original cast! Something I haven't been able to do in quite some time. The hefty ticket price was worth it. Every last cent. Now, what makes this show so special and deserving of the Tony Award for Best Musical (and everything else they won this year)? Its timely and thought provoking subject matter that is great for all ages and people, especially teenagers. It deals with subjects like grief, loneliness, suicide, the digital age, single parenting, and bullying. Sounds pretty depressing, right? I was actually surprised by how much I laughed. Of course, there were some tears too. The music is amazing. I could listen to their voices all day long, and usually do via Spotify. Many of the OG members are finishing their run in the show this month. I have no doubt that their replacements will be able to continue telling this important story with the same impact. What happens when you become a viral sensation based on a lie? Granted not an intentional deception but one that grows out of control in nanoseconds as social media has become the intoxicating drug for anyone who succumbs to its immediate impact. That's what happens to the 17-year-old title character who is dealing with his debilitating post-adolescent angst by writing encouraging letters to himself. Evan's divorced mother Heidi has pushed him to perform this daily task on behalf of his therapist, and it was one such letter that became the catalyst for a series of events that turns Evan into an instant viral celebrity. The linchpin of the story is fellow high school outcast Connor who angrily expresses his frustration. The letter brings him emotionally closer to Connor's family because they and the rest of the world think it was a suicide note from Connor as he shared his secrets to Evan as a reflection of their presumed close friendship. With a book by Steven Levenson that delves fluently into issues like mental health and teen suicide under Michael Greif's thoughtful direction, this turned out to be a highly engaging production attended at this performance by quite a few enthusiastic pre-teens. In a genuinely moving turn, Ben Platt played Evan with a fervent vulnerability that exposed his character's soul through his constant fidgeting, fast-talking hyper-babble, and a voice that pierced the heart. Sounding very much like a younger Jason Mraz, he sang with soaring clarity. He's in the spotlight on several knockout numbers such as "Waving Through a Window", "For Forever", and the valedictory "Words Fail". But Platt was not the only standout as Rachel Bay Jones movingly conveyed helpless confusion and inner strength as Heidi with her big Act II solo about abandonment. "So Big/So Small". In fact, a palpable sense of isolation infused all the characters including Connor's parents searching for answers, overachieving Alana who anoints herself mourner-in-chief, and Zoe, Connor's sister and Evan's long-time crush touchingly played by Laura Dreyfuss. The infectious pop-oriented music is by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, who wrote the lyrics for "La La Land". The 23-year-old Platt is definitely a talent to watch. read more

I've see amazing play but this one was a bit of a let down. Average singing/ performance. Stage production has no wow factor. Great show with terrific songs, compelling story and consistently outstanding performances. Ben Platt deservedly gets most of the notice and he is brilliant. But the other cast members (his mother, his best "friend", the entire Murphy family) are also excellent. Have wanted to see this show since forever! Finally got the chance and honestly it was a let down. I was expecting an amazing show due to all the hype. The singing was average. No choreography. I saw this show last night with my son. He's in HS and I thought this would be relatable for him as a teenager. DEH can best be described as a dark comedy musical. There were some catchy tunes and it was well acted. There was some very funny dialogue but there were also some very sad and touching scenes. The plot was interesting and quirky. I found the first half of the show very compelling but the second half didn't hold my interest as much. My biggest complaint is that the ending was very weak and left me unfulfilled. It was as if the writer of the show had a good idea for a plot but couldn't figure out how it should end. My son and I both liked DEH but neither of us loved it. I'm grudgingly giving it 4 stars only because the plot was unique. read more

Show. - I knew roughly what the show was about but I never expected it to be so emotional - Got lottery tickets and ended up with orchestra seats - You may have trouble following along because Evan Hansen speaks very quickly. Not recommended for those who cannot understand English very well. - First Act: 1hr 20min, Intermission: 15min, Second Act: 1hr - There were moments of comic relief to lessen the impact of such heavy subject matter but people were still crying in the second act - Behind me, a woman was opening bawling. - Don't expect a typical broadway show with dance numbers; this is more act + sing - No costumes, very simple outfits. Simple stage design. The focus here is the story - The theater was so small! I'm not tall at all and yet I couldn't stretch out my legs. Anyone 5'10 and above will probably feel uncomfortable. - Plus side is you'll get a good view from any section - Andrew Barth Feldman is amazing. He's only 17! - HIGHLY RECOMMENDED Favourite songs: - Waving Through a Window - For Forever - Only Us - Good For You At the end of the performance the cast stayed on the stage to introduce Broadway Cares. The best broadway show ever! I never expected to spend so much on tickets to any show, yet I can honestly say "I'd do it again. And I have no regrets at all." Or I could use the cliché "it's worth every penny." My sixteen year old daughters and I loved every second. We laughed, we cried, we were touched. Amazing music and script delivered with perfection. Ill start off by saying, this is not a play for younger kids. I wanted to see this show because I am a fan of Ben Platt, loved him in Book of Mormon and Pitch perfect. Dear Evan Hansen is an emotional quirky musical drama about teenagers in high school. Saw it during previews. I really don't want to ruin the play for anyone as I went to see it without knowing anything about it. All I will say as a parent it pulls on your heartstrings. Many emotions and tears coming from the audience. There are some funny parts as Ben interjects his humor. Well done performance by the cast, crew and orchestra. I'm glad I saw it and I really enjoyed it. Well done! Saw a second time with seats closer to stage and this showed was a wow! Ben Platt and the entire staff was on fire! So best seat choice would be center Mezz front row or orchestra middle. Tonight we sat 4th row center orchestra and it was perfect. No orchestra pit so front row not a good choice as you would be right against the stage. read more

I took sherry to NYC for her birthday. It was a Broadway themed event and she had mentioned Dear Evan Hansen earlier in the year. Hey I listen! This is a multimedia, millennial based musical. The set utilizes social media themed backdrops which are really cool. What is truly amazing is the skill of the young man playing Evan Hansen. It was truly an incredible performance. Easily the best show of the week. The emotions run so deep, it's hard to not get lost in the story and intensely feel for the characters. Do yourself a favor and see it. WoW- I've seen so many shows in my lifetime and the ones that move me, deserve a review DEH and Ben Platt deserve a shout out for drawing attention to struggles that exist in all of us. Ben's performance truly made me believe his disposition and palpate his desire to belong. Be prepared to experience an emotion(s) that might have been buried by life's overflow of information. Ann.... Very rude and unprofessional She shines a light right in your face as you are drinking what they offered for you to enjoy while watching the show.. so uncalled for and very unprofessional. If you don't want customers drinking while enjoying the show, don't offer drinks then!! I have to agree with the few relatively negative reviews here. It wasn't horrendous or a complete waste of time but really not worth its hefty price tag especially when you compare it to other broadway shows. If you're a tourist in town and can only see one or two shows, this is not the show for you. It lacks all of the glitz and glamour of broadway. You will not find any exciting choreography or dazzling set designs or gripping storyline. I wouldn't even say the singers were incredibly talented- nobody sang so beautifully that it gave me goosebumps (like other show singers). The story was relevant to us all, and there were some memorable songs, however, so I would say sure, watch it if you've already seen em all and want to watch another show. I felt more like I was watching a low budget musical play. I also overheard some people around me talking about it during intermission and a lot of people seemed to think the show was very slow paced and mediocre. I don't think those are the people commenting here though- lots of people don't comment on mediocrity so I felt compelled to write this review. read more

An incredible production in a stunning theatre! It's located in the Music Box Theatre in the middle of the action of Times Square, but slightly quieter and more peaceful. We got inside quickly and the employees were very helpful and kind, showing us to our seats. The production was absolutely stellar, with Ben Ross as Evan Hansen and David Jeffery as Connor Murphy, who were both amazing and truly made this such a dynamic show. The set design, songs, dialogue and actors make Dear Evan Hansen so unique and incredible. Funny, sad, uplifting! It ticks all the boxes! I will absolutely be seeing this again when I can.
