Does Anything go Right??? Last month bestie and I were on a Broadway/Off-Broadway marathon and as result we landed right in the middle of The Play That Goes Wrong. We grabbed dinner and headed to New World Stages for the show. Little did we know the show starts before curtain call with a little audience interaction and participation. The start was just the beginning, of everything literally going wrong in this play. To be honest, we did no prior research / Googling and after the show I realized this play has been around for some time. However, we honestly had no idea what to expect. We quickly realized this is a play of mishaps and slapstick comedy. I can sometimes appreciate being surprised and I'm glad I didn't have any prior knowledge from reading reviews. This allowed me to go with the flow and enjoy the show for the calamity it was. Nonetheless I can understand, those who do not necessarily enjoy this genre of entertainment. Both bestie and I laughed and didn't take the production to seriously and as a result we enjoyed another play in the month of all things Sho-eBruaury!! My family and I all loved the show. The acting was perfect - from slapstick to high theater to MMA in the background. It is hard to think of one scene to hilite as a favorite, as we were laughing all the time. The Playbill description of the "Murder at Havesham Manor" was a great touch and I enjoyed the sound/lights person and their interjections throughout the play. I guess I am just not a slapstick comedy gal because this show was really really not for me. I will say, it was pretty much as described: people walking into poles, getting bonked on the head, literal spit takes. But I thought that the overwhelmingly great reviews had to mean there was something more here. I don't want to put down what so many others obviously found funny and entertaining. The intimate theater was packed and people where hysterically laughing all night, but if you are not a fan of the silly, obvious humor, this is not for you. I was kind of aching for the night to wrap up. The cast did a fun job and I liked that they got the night started even before the actual show began with the cast putting together the set in full view of everyone, already getting into the hijinx that was soon to ensue. It's a cute idea, but again, not my kind of comedy. Another thing I did like was how cute and charming the theater was. I know it's because its a smaller show, but it felt much more ~new york~ charming than the much larger shows and theaters I am used to. I don't think you can have a bad seat here (other than the front row that definitely got hit with some of those spit takes). read more

Spoiler - everything goes wrong for the play inside this play. And it does so with a lot of hilarity. This play lived up to expectations as I had seen some short videos on TikTok. Some of the things that go wrong you can predict happening and other things you'd never expect. As a high school theater set and props person for 2 years about 8 years ago (so very little experience) the technical aspect of making everything go wrong correctly is amazing. Small, intimate theater that allows you to see the sweat on the actors' brows. We got lucky with front and center seats through our Groupon tickets, just like last time we visited for a different play, a year ago. We were the youngest audience members. Everyone else was in their 50's and up. The show is about a British theater company that is putting on a murder mystery performance, but everything goes wrong. The performers keep forgetting their lines, the props fail, the set falls apart, music gets mixed up, actors gets "injured." Such kind of staged humor is not everyone's cup of tea. Wasn't as funny to us as it seemed to other, older guests in the audience. Very talented crew, appreciated their hard work. Just not my type of show. Although, the second act does get funnier and more surprising. The ending got me jumping from my seat as, the bold surprises with the stage set malfunctions definitely made me laugh and exclaim in wonder. This was a funny and cute show. It is like a very bad high school play production gone severely wrong, lol. I sat at the very top, second to last row, and honestly, this was fine. There really is no bad seat in the house, except maybe the some of the front rows because you have to turn your head to the lighting guy, who is a character in the show. There is one intermission and the show lasted 2 hours (with intermission). This is a show that is great for families as well. There were kids in the audience, and they had the loudest laughs in the crowd. It is not a huge theater, and makes it more for interaction with the characters. If you go to the play, you'll understand why. read more

I have loved Broadway & Off-Broadway shows since I was a kid. Especially Off where you can get affordable great seats to award winning talent. I didn't notice any "bad" seats at this stage at the New World Stages theater. A great venue with multiple stages\shows for all ages. Two parking lots within a small walk on the block. It's not in the heart of the Theater District, which is less frantic if crowds, noise, and crazy taxis aren't your bag. As for the play ( NOT a Musical), the title says it all. It's supposed to be a Murder Mystery, but "things go wrong". Yes, some say there is plenty of slapstick humor, but there is some dry, witty (and visual humor) that requires a keen audience that knows how to watch all parts of the stage at all times. ( saw a few tourists who didn't seem to "get" all the humor) Regardless EVERY one of the cast is very talented. They make you feel like a part of the show and that's all I'm going to say to not be a Spoiler. I will say this. This is one show I think everyone who loves humor should go to. Hilarious and creative. It's the funniest show that I have ever experienced on Broadway. Great out of the norm story line and character development. The physical comedy and the props keep you engaged and laughing through the show. It's a must see comedy of errors. This ridiculous play won me over despite my not being a fan of slapstick Three Stooges-esque humor. The pre-show worried me; how I was going to get through the next two hours?! But 20 minutes in, I started to enjoy the physical comedy & gratuitous low brow hijinx. "The Play That Goes Wrong" is a play within a play, a format that has a special place in my heart. Endearing me further to the show was its murder mystery plot -- an accident prone theater troupe puts on "Murder at Haversham Manor" & it is moment after moment of missed lines, failing set pieces, "bad" acting, & unlikely stand-ins for cast members who'd been injured on stage. The ending gets unnecessarily chaotic, but again, I found the ludicrous situations to be more funny than annoying. Bright spots of smart, witty humor dot this most insane production. I had a good time at the theater, & dare I say, I'd see this play again. Wow a lot of effort went into the actors and actresses of this play's performance. Hats off to them - what a physically challenging play. The play is very fun and different because it has a certain amount of audience participation and a lot of breaking the 4th wall. The play has a mixture of predictable but also unexpected humour. I do think some aspects of the play were dragged out - it could probably be done in 30 min less than it was. Lastly the play is part of 20at20 promotion - where for certain weeks in the year you can get tickets for $20 right before the show! That's what we did and it was well worth it. read more

This play is marvelous - especially if you're interested in British-comedy-esque things and physical humor. I loved this play so much that I actually went a second time with my parents. New World Stages is quite nice as a venue and the set is quite amazing, as well. The actors are wonderful and their delivery is excellent! I truly was doubled over in laughter (to the point of tears) for a large majority of the time. I would say my parents are harsher critics than I and even they were dying of laughter. Ha! The play that goes wrong, much like many of my days I just had to see this play. The play started out with an interesting beginning and something I can totally relate to, my past home improvement projects never seemed to go as planned. The set was an excellent design for the play and requires you to scan it over and over to ensure you picked out all of its faults. The storyline was something I very much enjoyed, it completely reminded me of the movie CLUE, they attempt a murder mystery a creepy manor drawing room that just falls apart. The fact the chaos across the set is constantly entertaining and completely humorous takes the attention away from the actual storyline, in a way reminds me of my family holidays where you're glad you survived and ecstatic its over. By the end of the play everything breaks, even the cast members are broken, everything is falling apart and the stage manager getting pulled into the act was absolutely hilarious. Cheers! read more

Captain's Log. Star date 02242018 My commanding officer secured us tickets to this play to observe a common ritual of 21st century humans - attending a Broadway performance. We take our seats in the mezzanine level 20 minutes early to start time and observe what appear to be stage hands in distress as they roam around the theater asking audience members if they saw a dog. Most of these contemporary humans seem to delight in being, what I begin to realize, is part of the show. The show "officially" commences with an announcement on stage from one of the performers as I observe the humans around me begin laughing uncontrollably, and continue to do so for the next 2 hours of the play. One particularly loud female is laughing so hard and forcefully directly behind me to the point of distraction. It almost seemed as if she was compensated for her performance as well. The play indeed is a series of things that go "wrong" with constant slapstick actions and pratfalls. I observe and appreciate the performers technical ability in their ritual realizing they must get things "wrong" the same way performance after performance. It is impressive and admirable the skills of the performers with their ability to delight so many, but the humor is perhaps lost on my 24th century sensibilities. I must review the historical logs to discover more about this strange and confusing time in earth's history. read more

After reading the other reviews here, I get a cranky vibe from some of the people. I'm sorry I was the lady laughing hysterically. No, I was not paid. Maybe my sense of humor is too lowbrow but I thought the play was everything it promised to be. It is The Play That Goes Wrong. There was subtle humor and there were huge pratfalls, slapstick as far as the eye can see. Definitely, children will like it but my 70 year old in-laws liked it as well. The cast was phenomenal. To be this technical is very difficult, so no a high school production, it is not. But to each their own. They won't be on Broadway for long anyway. They are moving off Broadway. The upside is the tickets will be cheaper but I hope the quality of the cast and set ( and yes, the set is integral to the play) remains as good. read more

This is a comedy featuring Mischief Theatre, a comedy group who's members are grads of the London Academy Of Music and Dramatic Arts (current pres is Benedict Cumberbatch!) Their shows feature plays, in this case a 1920s murder/mystery, in which whatever can go wrong with lines, props and whatever goes wrong. Their forte includes great scripts, great (intentionally bad) acting and a lot of physical humor (something that's fallen out of vogue in recent years.) If you're a fan of British sketch humor -- John Cleese influences especially (Fawlty Towers), this show will be the experience of of a lifetime. The adverts are right on the money. No exaggerations. Non-stop laughter all night. Worth a repeated viewing or two. I hope some of their other productions hit the States as well! read more

From the pre-show antics, to the spectacular writing and physical comedy this show is near- perfect in its execution. If you can take a moment to suspend your need for overly high brow comedy and you're ready for some highly physical and we'll find comedy...That really interacts with the crowd which is refreshing...Then this is the show for you. It's not like a typical Broadway show but I think that's the beauty of it. So much fun I think my side hurt at the end lol. The actors are exceptional and you can tell they love what they do. I really wish I could see more of the shows from this comedy troupe! The show has been extended on Broadway for a reason....I don't think the $30 tickets will last long since the show is so popular...So grab them while you can! Also if you can help it...Don't sit to the extreme left. I noticed that some people couldn't tell what was going on for part of the show. This show has now begun touring and is still playing at least for now on Broadway. I was glad I finally had the opportunity to see it. From the upside down theater marquis to a fake murder mystery program within your actual program this London originated production will have you laughing in stitches throughout the entire show! Even before it gets underway a couple of cast members are attempting to put the finishing touches on this creepy English manor drawing room which continues to have the mantle fall down or a door that won't stay shut much like a cirque du soleil preshow entertainment. Even the audience is engaged in this corny set up. The scene: the fake Cornley university drama society attempts to put on a "who done it" murder mystery in a creepy English manor two story drawing room that literally "falls apart" with broken props and scenery. Called "the Murder at Haversham Manor" the show focuses on so much onstage mayhem that makes you forget the plot but rather laugh at all the crazy antics carried on by the not so talented "actors" and their stage manager who is later called in as an understudy when the principal leading lady gets "knocked out" by a door the slams on her. Off to the left side is the light and sound manager who is not always at his post, gets involved too much with his cell phone, causes show hold ups, and even gets into playing one of the actresses himself when the understudy also gets wacked! Spoiler alert! And there are spoilers! You will know who done it long before the ending. Repeating scenes, mispronunciation, dead bodies moving around add to the effect. Perhaps the best is corny way "character" Robert Grove has a telephone call passed to him first by holding up props and then later by a long string of the cast forming a "fake" extension cord to a set almost totally dilapidated. Props that break, set breakage, and even fake snow thrown like confetti will leave you laughing in stitches. Much slapstick comedy and pratfalls reminiscent of the earlier 1900s just add to the fun. Done in the Monty Python style "the Play the goes wrong" does just that. I'm glad to see this show is now touring and I definitely recommend it if it comes to your city and not able to get to NY. It literally brings the house as well as the entire set down in waves of laughter that will make you cry. read more

I saw it a couple of years ago before Covid. I took my dad who can't fully understand English and we both loved it! He's planning a visit and the ad for it showed up. I'd forgotten its name so wanted to leave a review to say it's great for everyone! It was such a stress reliever! Bet kids love it too! We had such a great time we'll go again! OMG - that was really awful!! From the start, this was clearly the stupidest thing I had ever seen! The place was packed with out-of-towners who thought this schlock was the cat's meow. They laughed hysterically at every stupid thing. I felt like I was on an alien planet because I couldn't even muster a chuckle. Of course I couldn't wait to get out of there at intermission! The Play That Goes Wrong was absolutely brilliant! The play revolves around a theater society putting on a murder mystery, but everything goes wrong (as seen in the title). It's hilarious from the top, and I couldn't stop laughing during the play. The acting was phenomenal, the set was creative, and the plot itself was actually quite interesting. They did a wonderful job at improv and also interacting with audience members. The Lyceum Theater is smaller and the seats in the middle of the theatre, a few rows back from the stage are the best seats to view everything that's happening on stage and in the balconies. I didn't know what I was going to think of this play when I first heard of it, but I definitely recommend it now! What a fantastic Broadway production! read more

Ok....full disclosure, because I've been on both sides of the stage this show was made 10x better! This show is so well done that I could not contain myself! I was the annoying clapping laughing guy in the Mezzanine on Sunday 7/16. This show brings to light the things that can go wrong with a show. Now most of the time all these things won't happen all at once to one show, but this show puts them all in full display! The actors have an amazing talent to be so good at what they do but make it look terrible. It starts off with the "Director" introducing us to the show and how it came to be. The whole first act is filled with sight gags, tech issues, and actor personalities coming out in the middle of a scene. The second act is the same, but ramped up! What I love is that it's very much reminiscent of Noises Off where they are doing a show and finish it, but we get all these beautifully timed moments from everyone. During the preshow and intermission, the "techs" are out working on things. The set was perfect, the performers were stellar and the playbill had me rolling just by the cover alone. If it's still in NYC when we return we are planning on seeing it again! read more
