On the left is the Hot sauce Committee, I was skeptical because it contained tequila, hot sauce and other ingredients. However, it was by far the best drink at our table! So good I had to get another! I can't remember what the other drink was called but it was fabulous! We also got some caviar and it was wonderful. Great ambience, everyone was extremely kind there. Death and Co is a solid addition to DC's cocktail scene. We appreciated how the menu is organized- there are five sections, the first being the lightest/least alcoholic and the last being the strongest, with five or six cocktails in each section. Standouts for us were the Bay Area Buck, which was a great take on a Moscow Mule, and the Riot Act. The Cherry Bomb Gimlet was also a really nice twist on a classic, and the Cruisemaster was a fun option with a more savory note and warm heat. Service wasn't the strongest, but it's only been open for a few weeks, so I think that will resolve itself with time. It was busy when we visited, so it was pretty loud inside. Most of the cocktails were in the $18-20 range, which isn't too far off for craft cocktails these days, and felt worth it for how interesting and innovative they were. The prices for food, though, are outrageous- $10 for popcorn, $10 for olives, $12 for mixed nuts, and $14 for baguette slices with butter- so I would highly recommend eating before you visit. read more

I wasn't impressed with this establishment. A friend told me that he enjoyed this place. They have a very large variety of bourbon/whiskey. However the mixed drinks were not impressive. The service was lacking. The waitress seemed to have an attitude. The food was even less impressive. I would eat before going there. The cocktails were very nice and well made. The prices are on the high side. Later that evening after I paid by credit card, I got alerts for 2 phony charges, both local shops in the DC area. My husband & I LOVE Death & Co. in NY so were super excited to hear that they were putting one in DC. Sad to say, we probably won't be back. Our main issues: 1). The vibe. The appeal of the NY Death & Co. is, first & foremost, the vibe. The moodiness, the darkness, the feeling of exclusivity & secrecy, the evocation of prohibition era Hollywood...The DC one had almost none of this. First of all, when we walked in we were greeted by a huge windowed room with a ton of tables that no one was sitting at. Odd, but they ended up seating us in a smaller room that felt more Death & Co. but was so crowded and loud that it felt less exclusive & more like a nightclub. Not ideal. 2). The music. I guess I was expecting Parov Stelar, jazz, maybe goth industrial...what I got was Miami club music. It seemed like it was trying very hard to cater to twenty-two year olds. 3). The food. We hadn't eaten first because we were expecting food along the lines of the pork belly at the NY D&C. When we saw the menu here we laughed out loud. Among our choices? Popcorn, a bowl of olives, anchovies & bread...all for around $15 each. Fine. We were starving & wanted something more substantial than popcorn so ordered the anchovies. For around $15, we were expecting much more than what we got: 4 tiny anchovies accompanied by 2 ridiculously small & thin slices of bread. Wow. 4). The drinks. We've never been disappointed at D&C when it came to the drinks, but there's a first time for everything. My husband's bourbon concoction tasted watered down & my 10 ingredient drink tasted like nothing more than a pisco sour. Disappointing, for sure. If you're looking for speakeasy vibes, there are definitely a few better places around. If you want to sit in a crowded, dark lounge where you won't be eating, but do really want to hear Pitbull, this may be the place for you. read more

Huge disappointment. All four of our drinks were pre-made. All different drinks - all came out of a batch-made bottle. Not on brand for Death & Co. Our bartender was nice, but I did not see any bartender making any drinks EXCEPT a mixed drink shot that one made for his fellow servers. $20+ drinks that I can pay $11 at Calico for an adult juice box. No replacement for Columbia Room, but a very welcome addition to the District's cocktail scene. Service was surprisingly excellent given D&C has only been open for a couple days. Cocktails definitely live up to D&C standards. Mixing with soju is fun and not something I've seen in DC before. Fantastic buildout. D&C may have done more with the space than Columbia Room. Very Japanese meets mid-mod meets West Elm. I do get the sense that there may be more of a focus on volume than at Columbia Room; there's certainly more space for more covers. The downside is that it's certainly loud. Overall, a very good experience, and an excellent experience for just one day after opening. Welcome to D.C., Death & Co. We're glad to have you. read more

As a first note, it was very difficult to get a reservation; my friend ended up emailing the location about 3 weeks ago to get us in for 4 people at 5:30 on a Friday. So that was off-putting. Once there, I asked the server for a drink that had a nutty flavor and he recommended the Monument Valley. It tasted like a less-than-mediocre old fashioned. He came around and asked us what we thought and I said that the crudite was good (it was - a ton of vegetables), but I did not like my drink. He then said "but how about the crudite?" in a saucy manner and quickly left, leaving the impression that he did not care that my $19-drink-that-he-recommended sucked. That was rude. I did not drink it. I was actually shocked in the moment, otherwise I would have said something else. Each of my friends got a different drink and each of us were underwhelmed by the drinks and overwhelmed by the price for such mediocre drinks. I wouldn't recommend this place. For whatever great reputation it has in NYC and elsewhere, the same approach has not come to the DC location. read more

We were excited to try a new cocktail spot in our neighborhood. The pretense of drinking here surmounts the experience by far. We tried four cocktails and the balance of flavors were overwhelming and fighting each other. Plus the amount of ice made it hard to actually access our drinks. Our server suggested perhaps something more "traditional" would be more appealing. It's not our palate or lack of sophistication that is at issue here, but condescension noted. This place is overhyped and you can pretty much get a better and more reliable cocktail anywhere else in Shaw. Columbia Room was so much better. read more

Such a top quality cocktail bar! All the atmosphere you could hope for, an amazing staff and a wide array of creative and delicious cocktails. The Amor Oaxaqueno was a revelation. Best Mezcal cocktail I have ever had. And likewise, the Dead Language was one of the best Manhattan variations I've ever had. Of course you can get any standard cocktail you want as well, but this is a great place to branch out. We will be returning soon. read more

Not my first time at Death & Co., but the first time I've received service good enough to warrant a review. Chloe was phenomenal! She guided my mother, who is legally blind, through the menu with great patience and never made her feel rushed (even though we came at a busy time). She checked in with us frequently, but in no way came across as patronizing... No over-the-top customer service voice or glued-on smile, just a really genuine person. She even gave us recommendations on some of the lesser-known (read: non-touristy) spots around town to check out! 15/10, I'll definitely be back for more of her excellent service and wit, and maybe for the cocktails. read more

Unfortunately our drinks at this bar were disappointing. My 'light' (that's how their menu is organized) drink was so light it was almost flavorless, except for the slice of grapefruit in it. And it was unfortunately on the sweet side too, which I didn't enjoy, but perhaps someone else would. No one else in my group loved their order, and so we didn't even stay for a second round as planned. The decor in this bar is very cool (think dark lux 80s) and everyone was dressed nicely, but with drinks priced at $19 and up, I frankly expected better, sorry! read more
