I hadn't been to Death in Venice in over seven years, mostly because I was unimpressed on my first visit. So when I heard that they had a Cheeseboard flavor that was supposed to be stellar, I knew I had to go back to try it. I'm so glad I did because Cheeseboard ("This is our 2019 North American Gelato Cup award wining gelato. It is made up of all the ingredients of a classic cheeseboard, brea cheese, white wine, pears, jam, honey and berry jam. Perfect balance of sweet and savoury") ranks right up there with the very best cups of ice cream or gelato I've ever had. It's just so creamy and delicious. It's loaded with delectable components that work so well together. I loved it so much I returned the next week for another cup and it was maybe even better. Would ideally put 3.5 stars but decided to round up. Prices are a touch on the higher end, but not horrible at all. Especially considering it's the same price for a bunch of unique dairy-free options as well. In general they have very interesting flavors to choose from, and also allow you to sample before picking as well. A cool ice cream shop that has unique flavours to choose from. Was craving something sweet after dinner and decided to walk over to Death in Venice Gelato after a quick Yelp search in the area. Upon arriving, there was already a mini lineup inside. The inside was HOT, I found myself already sweating during my wait for ice cream. The line is slow, since everyone takes a while to decide what flavours to try and sample. You get 2 samples per person which is great since their flavours are so different from your usual traditional flavours of vanilla or chocolate. Some of the cooler flavours they have are: mango coconut lime leaf (vegan), peanut butter croissant, bourbon smoked chocolate, mexican spiced chocolate, cheeseboard, blueberry lavender lemonade, boozy tiramisu and more! They also have two soft serve options, when I was there, they had Sicilian Hazelnut and Raspberry + Staranise. In the end after having my two samples, I opted to go with the Sicilian Hazelnut option and it was truly delicious, a full 5/5 rating. It was creamy and full of flavour, perfect for the summer heat. I just don't get the hype. The Gelato flavors don't make any sense. I tried 2 (bc they limit you to 2) and I suspect all would have a similar base line - tangy/Citrus. Such an odd pairing for Gelato or soft serve. I definitely made the mistake of getting their Strawberry Yuzu vegan soft serve and 100% so not recommend. I made a further mistake of getting one is the large waffle cone and another in a charcoal cone. Due to the size of the cone, you will be served different portions of the soft serve. Made zero sense after paying $20 for both. I used to enjoy their coffee many years ago when this place first started getting notoriety, but then their coffee quality also went down so I skipped the coffee today to try their Gelato and for the price point .... this is not that place unfortunately. Nutella cookie had a higher cocoa than expected. Water buffalo milk, honey & dates was rich but mild tasting (the honey and dates were definitely to accentuate the water buffalo milk). The spiced chocolate is not something I expected at all! There is a good kick to it and a great after taste of cinnamon that really takes it to the next level! Spicy ice cream. Now that's a concept! The Mango Coconut Lime Leaf on first bite tasted like I was slurping on green Thai curry! The coconut milk makes the gelato thicker than normal, almost like a soft pudding. The browned butter cinnamon soft serve was just amazing. It's one of the best ice creams I've ever eaten, and I'm a big boy who grew up in Wisconsin, the dairy state, home of frozen custard that makes most Canadian soft serve seem like imitation ice milk garbage. They had a new Pumpkin Stout Vanilla Caramel flavour which we opted to try. 5 stars and I've only tried the gelato once. I like their style. Propeller coffee, openable front window and spacious interior with a wacky front entrance where you can do a catwalk into the place without even entering, neat! The menu looked good for brunch and they have some cute little booths along the back opposite the windowed kitchen in the rear and opposite the gelato counter. Why go to Starbucks when you can get your caffeine fix at this cool spot just a few doors down? They have an awesome staff with some talented cooks in the back whipping up some creative gelato. The newest thing is a partnership with Pizza Thick from the east end. Last time I was there the pizza was being whipped up and sounded impressive. And this is what Alex park needs! More pizza. After seeing the positive reviews I decided to come here for brunch and of course check out their gelato! Located on Queen W, this place looks smaller from the outside. There is decent enough seating inside so you don't feel crowded. The brunch menu is pretty simple - a few egg dishes, a special (it was chicken stew the day I went). My friend had the East meets West egg dish. It's braised lamb, eggplants, herbs with eggs any way you like it. All the egg dishes come with bread and jams/ricotta spread. I'm not a big fan of eggs but wow this dish was flavorful from the lamb and herbs they used - melt in your mouth delicious- my friend wiped her plate clean. The ingredients all blended in beautiful to create a hearty dish. I decided to go with their special that day - chicken stew with fennel. It comes with rice and bread. It was yummolicious! The perfect stick to your ribs stew on a cold day. It reminded me of almost a Moroccan stew. The nice touch was the hint of fennel - gave it some depth of flavor without being over powering. So of course after brunch we had to try their gelato! They let you sample their unique flavors as much as you want. The day we were there they had such flavors as grilled cheese, Mexican chocolate, strawberry/Thai basil/juniper; pad Thai and fish sauce (was surprisingly good with a nice kick at the end, no fishy taste at all !), blackberry/cocoa (I had this one and it was a nice fresh palate cleanser) and several other interesting flavors. This place has really interesting gelato flavours. For example, when we went they had carrot chili yuzu, blackberry mint balsamic, and raspberry and margarita, to name a few. We tried those last two and they were quite good. I started off preferring the raspberry and margarita but the blackberry mint balsamic grew on me the more I ate. Both flavours were so well balanced and I wish I had more room to try more flavours. I'll just have to visit again soon. Their famous ricotta lemon rosemary wasn't on offer when we went, which was disappointing. Hopefully they're just rotating flavours and it'll be back sometime. They also serve coffee, espresso-based drinks, tea, and they currently have bags of dumplings for you to cook at home for $15. The service is friendly and there is ample space to sit and chat or work. I'll be coming back. read more

Great comfortable cafe on Queen West! Was really impressed with the originality and range of flavours they have for gelato. I had a double scoop of White truffle maple sage; and Cinnamon bun - and both were nice. Do check out their freezer at the corner to see their most popular flavours that are available as pints to take home! Given all their creative combinations, it might be a hit or miss - don't be shy to ask for a sample! This is by far the best and most unique gelato I have ever had. The four flavours I tried were corn on the cob, olive oil and sea salt, cheeseboard & pistachio baklava. The gelato it self was so smooth and dense yet light at the same time. Each flavour was amazing but the corn on the cob was the stand out for me. They drizzle olive oil and sprinkle sea salt on top. decided to check out this place after reading positive reviews. came here with the intention to sample and buy as much ice cream flavours as possible a nice place to grab a quick bite or just to enjoy coffee while doing some light work i went on a friday so i had their daily drink special which happened to be londond fog aka my favourite latte. it was really affordable - 3$ for a large cup. it was waterdown like most places. i also tried their almond croissant cuz that's my favourite bakery item. tbh, i've had better croissants. this one was firm/crunchy and the almond flavour was lost on me the reason i'm giving this place a 4 star is because of their unique and delicious ice cream flavours. i got 3 ice cream pints: cinnamon with toasted apples - mouth watering delicious! huge chunks of apples and the cinnamon flavours really pulled through. i honestly thought i was eating a homemade apple pie with authentic vanilla icecream with each spoon. has got to be my favourite of the 3 pistachio with baklava - didn't really taste the pistachio flavour but the crunchy pieces of baklava really dis it for me. it gave it a nice crunch and it made me feel like i was eating a Greek pastery strawberry thai mint - my least of all the 3 partly because it was gelato and because it tasted more like guava rather than strawberry with thai mint would definitely comr back to try other ice cream flavours read more

I must have stumbled in for gelato during a week of weird selections. I am adventurous with my food and flavors, and often enjoy the wilder gelato offering but nothing was a hit during my visit. I had 3-4 different taste tests but was disappointed with each flavor. The weirdest had to be the beetroot one (which was a beautiful dark red color) but tasted too savoury for my liking. I didn't end up picking anything and shared a peanut butter croissant scoop with my partner. The space is beautiful though, plenty of comfortable seating and space to enjoy a coffee or your gelato choice. Their Gelato flavours are incredibly creative, but still at the heart of it, are delicious. No gimmicks, just creativity. Ricotta lemon rosemary is a favourite in my home, but if you've got kids you can't go wrong with their oft available nutella and cookies or peanut butter and croissant. Got the blackberry yogurt swirl and rhubarb hibiscus (?) on a waffle cone. I'm not sure if it's the consistency of the gelato that's throwing me off or what, but it's very creamy and super smooth. I've had similar consistencies but the ones at Death in Venice is just throwing me off. The flavours weren't bad but also nothing I would come back for. What was bad was the waffle cone which was soft and didn't have any flavour. Major disappointment. I got to try the pistachio baklava which I thought I was going to be getting for sure when I saw the name but it's very sweet. It's like a mountain of sugar and then you get a hint of pistachio baklava. I sampled maybe two other flavours but I can't even remember what they are anymore and I went just last week. When we went, there was maybe only one other person and as you approach the back of the store location where the gelato actually was, it felt like I was entering a storage room because that's how dark it was. We got a berry type gelato flavour and it was good, but small. Overall, this is a very different vibe from a typical gelato place and it almost seems like as if they do not prioritize it as a part of their sales as the server very reluctantly went to the gelato section. It made me feel unwelcome and was scared to try more of a flavours. When we went, it was also just empty which made the place feel more dead and cold. A soft serve cone was $8.50 PLUS $3.00 for the cone itself and a single scoop of gelato was $5.00 PLUS $3.00 for the cone and with tax comes to around $23.00 for 2 single scoop cones!!! WTF? Firstly, the prices on your menu are inaccurate and the server said that she has been telling her manager to update for months.
