I've played some of the best disc golf courses in SoCal and some of the worst and this place falls fairly in the middle. One of my biggest issues with DeBell are the lack of proper tee pads and lack of proper signage which can lead to frustrating rounds. They conveniently post a map at the office, but to keep referring to a map you take a picture of on your phone constantly can get annoying. They try to update uDisc regularly, but again, when it's not accurate, you're left trying to figure things yourself. Terrain is another problem. For the most part it's well maintained, but if you're paying 6-8 bucks to play on this course, there's a part of you that wishes things were a little better. On a rainy day or the ones after it, don't expect good footing anywhere. The biggest problem though are the people. The staff is actually wonderful and very friendly...but the patrons can be hit or miss. It's a shared course with regular golf and some of the ball golfers can be a bit rude or aloof. Sure, it's a problem anywhere, but I've seen a lot of golfers not follow proper etiquette (slow play and large groups) and feel entitled to the course since it's for "golf." When you get past all it's faults...DeBell is kind of a hidden gem. In a big, mostly flat city like Burbank, there's not of open space and going up that hill past downtown Burbank, there's some really beautiful nature areas to find. On a sunny day with a cool breeze, playing here is a real delight. Away from the busy streets and noise of the city, you can really spend a calm day here. As you overlook the city, it's one of the better places in town to take in a sunset. Sometimes, you'll run into some nature with everything from lizards, skunks, rabbits, and the occasional deer. As far as disc golf goes, the course is mostly good. They change the layouts regularly and the positions can be in challenging positions...other times it feels like someone just moved the basket without any thought to why a hole should be that way. There's everything you want from a course...decent amount of trees, distance, and elevation changes. It's only 9 holes and there isn't a lot of long holes, but it's a nice challenge if you wanna spend a couple hours working on your game in relative peace.

$5 for a round (card only, no cash). Ample parking. 9 hole and all par 3 disc golf course. Felt very much like a golf course vs some of the other park-based disc golf courses in LA. Nice, well kept grass. Overall if you're in the area and looking for a quick 9-hole course, it's worth checking out and getting some exercise.

Hole 2 green if you can call it that.

I can't believe they actually consider this a golf course. The regulation course looks beautiful. However, the pitch and putt is a pile of crap! It shares the course with a Frisbee golf course! Really? Who does that? In my opinion, they should just turn it into a Frisbee golf only course. The nice started asked if I wanted to shoot again. I could play for free. Hell No! Free is my favorite word, but I could not do it. STAY AWAY!

Not a bad little spot if you want to work on your short game, go out for a quick refresher game or take a beginner out for a fun day on the course. I am not going to say that the conditions are ideal by any stretch of the imagination. The holes are short(longest is 90 yards, shortest is 60 yards) so all you really need is a 9 iron/PW and a putter. However they do provide more than ample challenge with obstacles and very small greens. There are some irrigation issues so you may find some swampy water hazards along the way. There is ample tree cover and a breeze so shade is nice. The course is affordable and offers Burbank resident, student, child and seniors discounts. I play here a few times a month on different days and times and never have to wait to play. If you are looking for a great little quick spot to go and have some fun , this will fill the need. The only reason for the 4 star review is the course conditions but you must remember that this is a municipal course not a country club.

Most of the course is on the ridge so you're rarely playing level ground. Wear good shoes. This course favors left-handed and forearm throwers. If you curve too far off to the left on most holes, you'll pay a very steep, and I mean steep price for it. I made sure to bring discs that can be easily replaced because you do have a chance of losing one or two. I'm surprised in a good way by the condition of the course. The tee-pads are rubber and long enough to make a good run-up while you throw, the baskets were all in great shape and there wasn't too much tagging. Really good players could easily play this entire course with mid-ranges and putters. I used my driver quite a bit, but I don't have much arm speed. I did OK. A few birdies, a few pars, and more bogies than I care to admit! It's very easy to get, "Chavezed," which means if your disc doesn't land flat it might decide to roll all the way down a steep hill and into the thick brush. Consider yourself forewarned! (; It's a dry and dusty course, but some of it is in the shade. Don't forget to carry some water. I was there on a Friday morning, with a few players around but not bad. I hear it gets really crowded on weekends. It's a little tricky to navigate. You'll need UDisk to find your way around, and even then it's a bit confusing. I was fortunate enough to join up with a group that knew the course so that made it a lot more fun. I used Google Maps directions: Chavez Ridge Disc Golf Course, Solano Canyon Dr &, Park Row Dr, Los Angeles, CA 90012. It put me really close to the first hole. You pull off the road and park head in. Be sure and use your parking brake! There's no water or restroom on the course. Too bad the city can't pony up for a porta-potty. I'm really glad I played here and I'm glad I waited to play it until I was somewhat ready. I'll be back. It's a great course and there are some spectacular views of LA and Dodger Stadium. This place is one of LA's gems!

I'm mostly throwing putters off the tee and the occasional Roc3 or Atlas. That facilitates the tight lines and sticky landings needed here. I've watched many a' card-mate throw too many a faster-speed disc, only to watch it land, edge up and do The Chavez (that inevitable 100'-200' roll aaaaaalllllll the way down the hill). Similarly, 30' putts can bounce off the cage and suffer this fate...that's how steep the slopes are. Throwing mids and putters also helps avoid errant kicks off the trees which, with a higher speed disc will result in disaster here. So, the course is a real workout for your upshot/short game accuracy. I shot -5 (6 birds/1 bog') yesterday afternoon utilizing the above disc mix. Sadly, idiotic vandals have bruised this course pretty badly; Holes #15-18 are completely gone. And many tee signs throughout the course have been graffitti'd over. Abhorrent. On a happier note, new holes have been added; after you finish up the western slope, head up across the intersection to 4 newly added holes. They play up...then down, taking you back to the spot where we've always dropped down to hit the eastern slope's holes. These new holes are challenging - offering the first real chances to throw a faster speed disc and air it out a bit. Many trees have been removed recently due to blight and fire precautions. The pre-blight course was, IMO, more difficult but this newly updated track presents a variety of risk-reward options that still equal a ton of fun. I had a blast. Shout out to the course curators - great work and thank you!

I've done multiple hikes here including night hikes, and honestly those are some of the best experiences. You get that peace and quiet with the hills and semi difficult trails while also being able to see all the LA city lights around you. The views at night are beautiful and the whole atmosphere just feels calm and relaxing. I've also been to the Observatory multiple times and it's amazing that it's free. The layout is beautiful, the views are incredible, and it's definitely one of those places you can take family or friends visiting from out of town. You really get a full view of LA from up there. Recently we actually had a family picnic here on the opposite side of the Observatory near the golf course area, and honestly I had no idea how nice that side was. There's a huge playground with different play areas for kids of different ages, basketball courts, lots of open space, and overall just a really good family environment. If you plan on hosting a party or family gathering here, my advice is to get there super early because this is definitely the spot people come to reserve. We showed up at 5 AM to lock down a good area and came back around noon for the picnic and it worked out perfectly. This place is just great all around. Whether you want to hike, visit the Observatory, relax at the park, or have a picnic with family and friends, Griffith Park honestly has it all. I love how Griffith Park is a natural oasis in the middle of the hustle and bustle of Los Angeles. There are so many trails within the park that it becomes a choose your own adventure on how easy or difficult you want to make the journey. I came this time with a friend, and we decided to walk off some calories after noshing at a local delicatessen. We parked in a small lot at the end of a cul de sac that doubled as the Brush Canyon Trailhead. It was along the southern end of Griffith Park which was a shorter but steeper distance to the sign at Mt. Lee Summit. The initial mile was an ascent that took us to the junction with Mulholland Trail. From there, it was a series of fairly flat switchbacks that provided a nice overlook of the mansions below. The path was wide enough to allow lots of foot and horse traffic. A drawback was the landmines (i.e. dung) you had to dodge from the horses. When we reached Mt. Lee Drive, it was a junction in which you could continue around the bend towards Tyrolian Tank. That was a plateau which we visited on our way back with a beautiful view of the sign as a backdrop. Our decision was to continue another mile up a service drive that would lead us to the back of the sign. I think many people underestimate the additional winding slopes before reaching the endpoint. There must have been an increase of 500 feet in elevation during this final climb. The peak provided a nice view of Lake Hollywood in the distance to the south and the smoggy blanket that hovered over the valley to the north. The back of the sign was rather boring as you could see the scaffolding that held up the letters. We took a break and then descended to Tyrolian Tank for more photos. By the time we arrived back at the parking lot, it was a three-hour round trip that covered over seven miles. The weather could not have been better as there were few clouds, and the temperature was in the low 70s.

So, let me start out by saying that we get that local pros like Mike Byrne, Steve Rico and Wally Moore can play the standard 18 here (Yellow & Blue baskets) and come home around 14 or 15 under on a bad day, okay? But, for us mere mortals, it's slightly trickier. And that's because of two things; the LAKE/ISLAND hole and the potential for roll-offs. Yep, the joy of being "chavezed" right here T.O.. As of my most recent playing here in early December 2020, the grounds are immaculate and that dreaded, awful, disc-hungry palm tree populated creek on the north side of the course has been completely declawed, exposing the creek. This was always my biggest complaint about this course; if you pulled your drive in that creek on 5, 6, 14 or 15, you could be searching for your disc for literally half an hour (especially when the Westerly crosswind is blowing) Now, no more. Sure, the disc might still end up there, but now it's very easy to find. Holes 5 and 14 (playing up from the pit following the LAKE/ISLAND hole) should have an OB line demarcating the north side of that little trail ascending to the baskets, but it's been removed - so we cannot know the exact marking of the OB there at the moment. Ditto for the OB line continuing over the hill on that Yellow Basket position. But if I know these guys and their OCD propensity for keeping this course beautiful, those lines will be reinstalled very soon now that the major brush clearing project is complete. Some diatribe-lite on that LAKE/ISLAND hole (4 = lake / 13 = island). I've heard this explained to me a dozen times before, teeing up the Rabbit Flats / ProAM but, no matter how many times it's been dissected, it never fails that a disc lands somewhere ON the rock ring and opens new queries. This hole features a boulder-and-rock "ring" and, if you're "inside the ring" on 4 / or "outside the ring" on 13, you're OB and play your lie with a stroke added. BUT...there's no absolutely clear marking within and between those rocks themselves so, when a disc lands leaning on one of them, potentially outside or inside or who knows, sometimes the call can be tricky leaving you to make up your own ruling or getting a consensus from the other cats on your card. (If you're alone, and there's even the HINT of a question....Rico's Rule says it's always OB, lol) This ring could benefit from a very definitive rope line - or beer-cap-line - ANYTHING that clearly defines what's in and what's out. I would be more than happy to supply some of those beer caps. And, if this is too pedestrian for you cats, let's agree on champagne corks or something. Moving on... You'll find the "flats" (up top) in perfect condish' now. Everything's been raked, plowed, pruned, mulched and flattened to a disc golfers' heart's content. OH, AND THE ADDED JOY; there's a giant grassy soccer field to the east of holes 1 and 2 that provides ample space to air out your biggest drives and rollers after the round. (something you will not get an opportunity to do during the course of play thanks to the shorter nature of this course)

The grounds are beautiful, with plenty of open space, walking paths, mature trees, and peaceful water features. Everywhere you look there seems to be another picturesque view. On our second visit, we discovered the Hummingbird Garden, which ended up being one of the highlights of the park. The area is filled with feeders and absolutely buzzing with wildlife. We saw hummingbirds darting between flowers and feeders, along with bees, songbirds, lizards, and squirrels. Nature lovers will be in heaven. While not recognized by the disc golf community as being a destination course, a handful of old timers, college kids, and area golfers keep the UCI course alive and remembered. As of 2013, the course has no real representation through social media and other disc golf outlets (DGCoursereview.com doesn't even list it). It's a course that is usually passed by word of mouth. Besides a simple website (listed above) that features info on the course and maps of the courses' layout, there's little information out there. There are no signs, no maps and no information at the campus besides faded arrows pointing you to the next pin location. This is definitely an "insiders" course. Perhaps the biggest reason why this course isn't a huge draw for disc golfers is the fact it's a pole target course. There are no baskets. Mind you that target courses were used back in the 60s before the "pole hole" basket was invented by Ed Headrick (an original basket can be found at Oak Grove DGC in Pasadena, the first permanent course in the world). Here's how it works : there are a total of three 18 hole courses laid out and around UCI's Aldrich Park. The first 18 holes are represented by light poles with white tape wrapped around it. The second 18 holes are represented by black tape and the third set of 18 are represented by green tape. There is also a 9 hole "playoff" course represented by red tape. This makes a total of 63 holes. Tee pads are represented by small painted arrows (or in some cases dots). Many are faded and sometimes hard to see. Light poles can also be used as more than one pin location, as you will see multiple color tape on those poles. I managed to only play the first 18 holes before having to leave for a family get together, but I must admit that playing here was really fun (especially if you can get a group together...I played with 8 people). The fact that the campus is so quiet on a Sunday morning makes for a pleasant experience. I was skeptical about shooting at light poles (how fun is that?) but it made you really focus your putting. I can see that playing this course would make you hone in on your mid range game and putting, since you're aiming for something quite thin in size. Also another interesting side to playing here is the fact that buildings come into play sometimes. Also love the fact that there are some elevation throws too. A few other key points about playing at UCI : - If you're a first time player of the course, I STRONGLY SUGGEST coming out with a local who at least somewhat knows the layout of the course. I ended up playing with someone who pretty much grew up playing here with his dad. Since the park is a huge circle, getting lost from hole to hole would be quite easy to do if you're a newbie. It will save you a ton of time playing with someone familiar with the course layout. - Being how this is a large university, I would suggest playing here on weekends...although my buddy says playing here during the week is do-able. Keep an eye out for people walking, jogging, riding bikes and other various activities along the pathways. - Pretty much any ivy patch and or ice plant (http://projects.trnerr.org/invasives/assets/templates/plants/picts/carpobrotus_edulis1.jpg) is out of bounds, unless the light pole is in a patch. Bushes and other plants are safe. - Please keep a low profile when playing here. In other words, respect the rules of the university. It would be very easy for the university to eliminate any signs of a course being here if they see it was a draw to "bad elements". We want this course to be around (and maybe return to glory) for a long, long time. Please respect it and enjoy it.
