We took 10pm class offered cuz summer day hours are so hot. They chose their own colors and Stacey did a great job explaining and walking each thru their process. We pick them up in next couple days cuz the ornaments need to cool. They did say they can ship (extra cost) if you prefer or leaving area before ready. I do wish our instructor had turned around to face us when she was taking, sometimes it was hard to hear! Be prepared to be hot - I mean that furnace is over 1,000 degrees! We had the most amazing experience here!!! We had a private session (two of us) and Sophie was our instructor. Sophie was absolutely incredible and we couldn't have asked for a better instructor. Sophie gave us so many great options and was happy to step in if needed but really let us take the reins if we wanted to (but always ensuring safety!). Took my family here for a Thanksgiving activity. My mom, aunt, and uncle resisted the entire time, thinking it'd be a waste of time. But I think they ended up enjoying the experience the most out of all of us. The class is supposed to last two hours but it's very dependent on how many other people are in your class. There is about a 20-30 minute safety explanation and then a demo to show you the process. Then each person gets about a 15 minute hands on experience to make their ornament/float. You can't take the piece home right away, so coming back at least two days later is kind of a chore if you don't live close by. But overall, I think it's a great experience and would highly recommend for dates/friend outings/work events. read more

Nate is exceptional. A 70 year old bell jar lantern in my home was broken by a workman a few weeks ago. It was part of a pair and I was distraught about how to replace the glass in such a beautiful fixture. Nate was amazing--he worked diligently to match the glass in width, length, and diameter. POV: You watch Blown Away ONE TIME and then end up at Decatur Glassblowing... But seriously, what a fun experience learning a new art form. I took a group class with a bunch of friends, and we all had so much fun. All of the instructors were super knowledgeable and made everything look super easy. The instructors worked with everyone one-on-one in turns to make sure we felt safe and that each finished bowl was beautiful. I can't say enough great things about Sam, the artist who helped create my bowl! He was so professional and I loved that he explained each step. They require liability waivers, masks for the duration of the class, and proof of vaccination to do the glassblowing! For about $80, we spent 2 hours learning to make handcrafted bowls which we got to take home. Everyone in my group thought it was worth every cent and would come back again! read more

Scheduled an event earlier today for some friends in town for the holidays. It was our second time going. The first was earlier this year and remarkably fantastic. We made bowls for the first visit. I went to make Christmas ornaments. The experience and the studio is very cool. Only thing is the hand on part of the group class is very short, about 10 minutes. This was a fun evening activity! each pumpkin takes about 10 mins to make and you go pick it up a few days later. They help you out with everything and go through instructions prior to starting. Hidden away on a random tiny street, you'll find Decatur Glassblowing for all your glass shopping and class-taking needs. Group classes are posted online as well as private classes for individuals or small groups. The course catalog includes opportunities to create paperweights, flowers, ornaments, pumpkins, bowls, cups, and more. Prices vary depending on the nature of the object being made. I signed up for the ornament class which was $44. I was a little skeptical about how hands-on the class would be but I was really satisfied with the amount of work we did. It's actually a good thing I wasn't performing the entire process on my own since I'd end up with an eyesore of a blob. Our awesome instructor Carolina's expert guidance also helped me not craft a misshapen mess. While she went over the whole process at the beginning at the beginning, it'd be nice to have a little handout or something to take home for reference! It's a pretty fast-paced process and only one person can go at a time. So depending where you are in the queue, you might crank out your piece in 10 minutes and leave or hang out and spy on everyone else's attempts. Definitely keep in mind the weather. The workshop might be cool but the furnaces are incredibly hot, around a toasty 900-2100°F. All creations have to cool for 48 hours. You can then swing by to pick up your masterpiece or arrange to have it shipped to you for an added fee. Luckily Decatur Glassblowing is open daily until 8 PM which makes it easier to stop in. There are a handful of spots right in front and free street parking along Freeman. My handcrafted ornament rocks. This was a bucket list item for me. I've always wanted to participate in glassblowing. I booked a private class for yesterday. The class started exactly on time and Abigail was amazing to work with! I was nervous at first because I was alone. But Abigail kept good conversation, gave good instruction, and overall made me feel very welcome! During my time I was able to make 3 pieces. The coolest process was making the bowl. Abigail walked me through making the object first and then we made one for me. It did help to see the entire process before I jumped in. It takes 48h for the glass to cool down, so I'm excited to pick up the finished pieces! When you first make them, the colors are still hot so they don't look the same as they will at pickup and I can't wait to be surprised!! I recommend this experience for everyone!!!!! read more

I never envisioned that spending an afternoon at Decatur Glassblowing would be so much fun, but it was without a doubt one of the most enjoyable activities I've ever done. There's something about being able to craft something out of molten glass, but the expert help and instruction of our instructor, Nick, made the experience so memorable. Did I mention how patient he was with us? He walked us through every step of the way and never made us feel as though we were incapable of producing anything but amazing art! I have a new-found appreciation for glass-blown items now that I know how they're made. The other thing Nick did well was that he explained everything multiple times as we went along the process. His passion for glass-blowing and art in general was evident in how he demonstrated the technique, but he brought it down to a level that made us feel comfortable, capable, and safe. He is skilled at his work and was able to articulate this through his instruction and constant encouragement. It was such a different adventure than anything I've ever tried and I'm glad we chose Decatur Glassblowing to cut our teeth on this really fun escapade. We will most definitely be back! read more

This was on my bucket list but I have to admit I was nervous and a bit intimidated. Nathan put those fears to rest immediately. He is the owner, as well as one of the guys who helps teach classes. He let us know that he was willing to help as much or as little as we needed. He began by demonstrating step by step what the procedure was. He then let us know if we wanted to skip our turn and come back that was fine as well. We skipped our turn and let two people go ahead of us so we could watch. Nathan is very patient with the class. He tells you what to do next after each step, instead of assuming you would remember. He explains that the color you chose won't be vibrant until it cools completely. All colors appear orange at first. I'm posting the before and after pictures so you get an idea of what they looks like in both stages. I chose the blue and my girlfriend chose the multi color. They have to cool overnight and get the base sanded so they are not available to be picked up immediately. If you live close by that's not an issue but if you don't, they do offer shipping options. We just ran back up the following weekend and picked ours up. The experience was hands on and a lot of fun. They offer different classes for each holiday or you can book a private class to try making more difficult things. I would recommend that everyone try this at least once. This place is one of the hallmark locally owned businesses of downtown Decatur, and all the artwork they make is really cool. It's gotten pretty expensive, but that's kinda how supply and demand works anyhow; moreover, they have some necklaces for under $10 and mystery bags that serve as really nice budget buys. read more

The best customer service! I ordered a couple of glass pumpkins to be shipped to me and unfortunately one arrived damaged. The glass pumpkins were wrapped and insulated well but were damaged from how the box was handled once it was shipped. Not any fault of Decatur Glassblowing. Sent an email and received a phone call back the same day and they replaced the pumpkin immediately. Don't find that type of customer service very often. Can't wait to order more beautiful pieces from them and hopefully visit their store one day. read more

Overall a pretty interesting and educational? experience. Check the website for class and private sessions. Online class sessions already inform you ahead of time what you will be making, such as a pumpkin, flower, etc. Its $44 per person for a class with others, and about $70 for private. The website says the group classes last about an hour, same as private. At the location, they also have glass products available for sale. So my husband and I booked for a class, but it just ended up being the two of us. The instructor was super nice and walked us through the demonstration on how to make a flower. She then helped each of us. Warning - it can get hotter than any of Georgia's summer days, so dress accordingly! My only quandary is that the place is called Decatur "Glassblowing," but you don't get to blow any glass (probably bc most people are rookies). And it would have been nice to know we would have been the only ones in the class so we have the choice to reschedule. I planned for an hour of entertainment, but we finished in a little less than 30 minutes, which sort of made the $44 per person less worth it. Surprised my husband with a class on Valentines to make a glass heart paperweight , we both had an awesome time. Before the class started, we got to look around the studio and check out some beautiful pieces that were for sale which ranged in price from a few dollars to the more expensive (but so worth it if you've got the money). Once the class started our instructors explained all the safety rules and what we were going to do before we got stuck in and then walked through the whole process with us as we each made our paperweights, we got to choose which colors we wanted and what shape we wanted to make and how we wanted it to look.
