The glass art is good, just good. As a neighbor & human working within the same space, StudioPlex, he is extremely rude. Every day, early, until often running late into the evening, he is blasting music! Sound that penetrates thick antique brick walls with closed windows. Often, also, he runs very loud power tools. I can see running such things occasionally but 12-16 hours a day into the night? Rude. Have we asked him to bring it down, of course. We all get a mean, do nothing stance. So, NO, he's a self centered jerk & we will not be referring his business to anyone. read more

Janke Glass was amazing helping me recreate a duplicate lower glass piece to fit my Andre Arbus Crystal light from Italy. Now that was a lot of fun. I was more than eager to get some exposure to a 2,000°F furnace filled with molten glass. Taking advantage of a groupon, we were gently walked through the procedure of making a glass / tumbler. Kate was a very gentle and knowledgeable teacher. She provided some excellent education and hand-holding through the whole process. The event started with some eggplant-hushpuppies from the nearby Serpa's restaurant. They were delicious. I passed on the wine. I figured I wanted to be fully aware of what I (and everyone else) was doing with a blowpipe tipped with a glowing-hot glob of molten glass. Then Kate walked us through everything, instructing us briefly on the equipment, the vocabulary, and the procedures for what we were about to do. We individually took turns doing the glass blowing thing. Somewhere in the universe, there are some hilarious pictures of me doing this. I hope you never see them. But the experience was a total blast. I very much want to do this again and again, and hopefully produce something that doesn't look like a tumbler designed by Jackson Pollock. read more

I had a lot of fun in class and the instructors were so patient and had a sense of humor. Unfortunately, I did burn myself within the first 3 minutes due to my own clumsiness. They had aloe vera gel, burn gel wrap, and ice. However, they seemed to not be fully prepared with a first aid kit and everything considering they deal with such high temperatures and potential accidents each day. Luckily, it was just a first degree burn and the instructors helped me throughout the class. It's super hot - I'd recommend going during the winter time! read more

I've been wanting to try glass blowing for a while, so I bought a Groupon for Janke Studios. While creating the appointment was easy, the teacher forgot about the class. So, we were left waiting outside in the cold for over an hour and a half. There was a glass blower who got in contact with the owner Elizabeth, and she got in contact with the teacher for the class. When he eventually got there, he told us that he wasn't there because the class had been canceled, but we could continue with the class since he was there. One couple left and asked for a refund, which I can understand. The couple also said that this was pretty normal behavior for Janke. To make up for the wait, we were given the option of creating as many glass ornaments as we wanted in the hours for the class. I didn't realize how much air it took because it was my first time, but I ended up making four. Two of the ornaments turned out nicely, while two looked wonky. Besides the wait, I enjoyed the class, and I may try another. The shop can be difficult to find. If you're coming from the Serpas and valet entrance, walk all the way to the back of the plaza, turn right and keep walking until you see the Janke Studios sign. The easiest way to find the studio is from the parking garage. If you're entering from the garage, it's on the bottom left hand side. read more

My wife and I went for one of their "date night" experiences. We had the honor of Matt Janke being our instructor. We had a lot of fun. Simple down to earth people that share their love for a unique art form. We had no idea what we were doing but by the time we were done we got to create our own piece of art with some help. Great experience from scheduling to arrival to creation. The only bummer is the glass take a couple days to cool. read more

We worked with Matt Janke and his wife Kim to outfit our new loft with custom glass blown pendant lights that we LOVE. Their studio is easy to find at the front of the StudioPlex compound, but visiting during business hours can be a challenge (presently Tu, Th, Fr 1-5, Sat ?) but taking a late lunch and making a stop for a personalized consultation is well worth it. Matt took the time to walk us through his inventory, holding various pieces up to the light so we could see the patterns and intricacies. We talked at length about our style, color palette and goals and he outfitted us with made to order art for our new space. He worked with our incredibly short lead time (3 weeks) and our mounting needs to deliver the perfect product. At a fraction of the price of other local (though potentially chain) "loft" or "contemporary" lighting stores, Matt delivered quality, with outstanding customer service. read more

My attempt to buy an ornament here was a big fail. Bought one last year for my grandmother and she really liked it, so I planned on making it an annual thing. The studio apparently moved from the front of Studioplex to the back in the last year. I followed the signs and parked. I walked through the area that I thought led to the studio and that's when my progress stopped. They may just not be open to walk up business anymore, but I couldn't figure out where the store might be. To the left were some unmarked chain link doors that were closed. That's the way the path led. Dead end there. I started to walk around to see if the actual entrance was around the edge, but a chained up dog started barking at me, so that was a no go. I stood surveying for a while, then just left. I'm not a believer at all in the customer is always right, but at least during the holiday season make it obvious how to get in your store so I can buy some stuff. read more

My office conducted a field trip (of sorts) to Janke Studios and it was a blast. Matt and his staff had everybody from my office (my bosses and co-workers) produce their very own (as in to take home) glass sculpture / glass art (paperweights / glass beads). My office ordered pizza delivery from nearby Jack's Pizza (which was excellent by-the-way, Janke Studio's recommendation) and Janke Studios / Matt Janke set up a place for us to eat lunch back in the storage room area adjacent to the main studio area and retail space. The storage room was a little bit cramped for our group (there was about 15 - 20 of us) but at least it was warm and cozy (and a nice respite) from the freezing cold weather outside. Some of us blew / spun glass in the main area next to / behind the retail store spot while most of us blew / spun glass in the annex studio space on the other side of the arts complex (perhaps a two minute walk from the main glass studio area). The main studio area had one station (glass blowing station / furnace set-up) whereas the "annex" had two "stations." The three stations in total ensured that everyone could get a turn making glass sculpture under close supervision by Matt himself or one of his knowledgeable staffers in under three hours. The supervision is necessary since it is a potentially dangerous activity and certainly a challenge even though it is a lot of fun., Matt and his staff (in addition to being very nice, courteous, and friendly art instructors) are all amazingly skilled professionals. They make an intricate and (potentially) hazardous activity look easy and carefree. You are, after all, working with fire, molten glass, red hot metal rods, and white hot furnaces. Towards the end of the program, everyone watched Matt "put on a show" by blowing / spinning / sculpting a vase out of molten glass. Matt - in addition to being a skilled craftsmen - is quite the showman: He quickly - almost effortlessly - made a difficult (usually time-consuming and painstaking) task look simple if not outright easy. Matt made a stunningly beautiful, long neck, two-handled vase in about the same time it took me (and my co-workers) to make a billiard ball size paperweight. You really gain an appreciation for both the beauty and the difficulty level of the craft. Kudos to my bosses for coming up with such a wonderful and original field trip idea. I cannot say enough good things about this experience other than that I highly recommend it. read more

Our instructor was friendly, funny and very helpful as she guided us through making our glass piece. Handling molten glass, students without experience, and having no burns, helping us to create beautiful pieces of art while answering hundreds of questions says just how talented this gentleman is. Very cool stuff. The glass blowing studio looks like a fun date night but in the winter! The studio is small but packed with beautiful pieces. Its right next to a restaurant so make it an all inclusive outing. The actual art studio is a short stroll to the back of the complex. read more

Went to Janke studios for a Hand Picked Atlanta deal. It was an hour glass blowing class for two. Matt was our teacher and he was absolutely wonderful. He began by showing us all of the tools then demonstrated how to create a glass flower and paperweight and then it was our turn to create our "masterpieces" it was an amazing process and a lot of fun. Matt was extremely personable. I highly recommend going in and seeing the beautiful pieces in the studio and taking a class if possible. read more
