I've been working in production for years and have rented from MANY rental houses; ranging from Hollywood, Culver City, Downtown, Glendale, Burbank, etc. Although my experiences were generally decent, I've never had my mind blown until I was introduced to Deck of Aces. Boota (the owner) is a man of honor and understanding. He realizes that renting film equipment is expensive and is very supportive of all filmmakers. His pricing is incredible, in fact it almost seems TOO GOOD to be true. I pay about half of what I do compared to other rental houses when I get his RED Epic & Movi packages. He's got an incredible amount of equipment always keeps his gear clean and updated. Now aside from the equipment is his quality service. My crew & I were shooting out in the desert (2 hours away from his shop in Burbank) when we noticed that we were missing a few pieces from our package. Boota was kind enough to drive all the way out to deliver the cord to us -- AT NO CHARGE. Deck of Aces makes you feel like family. The whole team is very professional and flexible with your needs. Amazing! I don't think i've gotten this level and quality of service from any company ever. Boota is truly a caring, understanding, honest individual who is always willing to serve his customer as best he can. As a CSUF student and aspiring DP this was my first legit experience working with a camera house. Boota was very helpful to me throughout the entire process. I subrented Boota my red monstro over 3 weeks ago for a weekend and have yet to be paid. He contacted me through share grid and asked if we could do the rental outside of there to save money. He told me he'd pay me that day but since then it's been radio silence. He doesn't return calls or texts. I recently came here for a prep and left a google review about it because it was such a bad experience. My what should've been a 2 hour prep, at most, turned into an all day prep because the owner, who was the only one working there, spent most of the day outside smoking weed and nothing was in the shop that I asked for. I wasted a whole day over nothing being ready and no one being able to go pick anything up. At one point I had to wait well over an hour for the owner's friend to come to the shop so he could drive to Abel to pick up a filter. Yea, a filter and it was a filter that was on the order to begin with! That's not the best part though, shortly before someone got there to go pick up the filter the owner asked me if I wanted to go pick it up myself! He said "yea, you know, Abel's like right down the street, wouldn't take you long". I couldn't believe that. I mean, really?! I told him I had work to do because I was trying to get outta there and then he went outside to smoke weed again and asked me if I wanted to go smoke. It was unreal. A few hours after leaving the google review I get a call from my DP that I prepped that job for, telling me the owner of Deck of Aces just called and him and cursed him out because of my review. Apparently the owner told my DP that I "didn't know what I was talking about" and that I "asked a bunch of stupid of questions that I should've known the answers to". This blew my mind coming from someone who told me my wide lenses looked off when I checked them at prep because it's hard to tell with wides. NONE of the lenses were on but I didn't make an issue out of it because it was a music video thatI was eye-focusing on and because all of the lenses were subbed so I didn't wanna wait another hour or two while someone took them back to another house to get fixed. Deck of Aces is always the first place I turn for camera rentals. They take great care of their equipment, their rates are super reasonable, they are flexible with the factors involved in a shoot and they are such nice people to work with! Since we have a good relationship, there have been times when Boota was gracious enough to upgrade us to even better cameras, or throw in awesome extras like high quality monitors etc. if they happened to be available.
