This hotel is located next to the Fairmont, a few minutes walk from Lake Louise. We paid $250/night on Thanksgiving weekend, which was steal for the location! The floors were a bit squeaky, and the lock needed to ne replaced. It took at least a minute of fiddling each time we went back to our room (as if we were trying to break in), which was frustrating. The cleanliness was adequate, but you could see thick layers of dust behind the cabinets and o the edges of the wall. The balance was so old that the lights were out in thr bathroom the whole night because of my use of the hairdryer supplied in the room. Buffet breakfast was also decent for the price, wenliked that the menu changes daily. Service wise, half of the staff seemed to be diligently working- clearing tables and filling up the buffettable, but the other half would chat loudly continuously by the entrance without making eye contact or greet the guests. read more

We stayed a week here. Rooms are decent size, clean, and with good bathrooms. On the plus side: 1. Nice old school lodge feel. Solid views all around. Quick walking access to Lake Louise. 2. Above average food and bar. Yes, you can do better, but at a higher price point and usually with at least a 45 min drive. 3. Good parking, which is an issue in the area. On the "I can deal side," but maybe a minus depending on what you are looking for: 1. No AC. Usually not an issue, but for our first two days it was high 80's Fahrenheit/low 30's C. Had to keep the windows open. 2. Sound. Rushing water from the nearby stream. We actually liked that. The building is old, so anyone moving, especially in the floors above you makes a creaky sound. 3. Wifi was weak. Cell service was spotty in the area except in town. We were trying to get away, so no big deal for us this time. 4. No tv. Also no big deal this time for us, since we were trying to be offline/low tech. We came here for Brunch to escape the cold. The chicken and waffles was one of the best meals we had on the trip. I kind of regret both of us not getting this. If you come for brunch, get the chicken and waffles. (The chicken and waffles deserves the 5th star.) I got a sampler plate with 2 eggs, 2 slices of bacon, 1 Buffalo sausage, a small breakfast steak, and some breakfast potatoes. It was okay, but nowhere near as good as the chicken and waffles. Lovely location in a rustic old lodge close to the shore of Lake Louise. Dinners are nice and the service very pleasant but if you order from the menu at breakfast be prepared for a long wait. We have ordered breakfast from the menu three of five days - 25 minutes the first time, 15 the second and 40 minutes today and today - everyone else was having the buffet. Not sure what is wrong. The food was however very good. Overall a nice stay even if a bit frustrating at breakfast. Other good attributes are a guest laundry and pool table. Update - last day.. tried the buffet today thinking we'd be done in less than an hour. Waited 15 mins for the tray of eggs to be refreshed. No potatoes in sight for the duration. Plates ran out, cups ran out. Very frustrating given the price paid for the rooms here (CAD$425/night). Downgrading to 3 Star. But still the staff are very nice even if overwhelmed. read more

The room was really, really small - I could touch both walls at the same time. This meant that the bed was short and couldn't accommodate someone over 6 feet. The room was hot, so we had to keep the window open which let in the constant sound of some huge ventilation fan that kept us awake. Wifi was incredibly slow at less than 1 Mbps. The box lunch that came with the deal was actually good, but definitely not worth the $15 per person extra. The room rate at $350 was hard to swallow for this laughably small room, since it was only slightly less than the luxurious beautiful Chateau Lake Louise next door. Booked this room after staying at the Fairmont since my friend couldn't book us another night there. We paid $300 for the night. We expected a cozy and charming room as advertised, while also understanding the historic significance of the property and that it may lack in modern touches. WELL!! I walked in and I was shocked. I don't think the $300 room I paid for ever made the cut on the Deer Lodge website. It was super dark and dingy. There was one outlet preoccupied by a lamp. No mini fridge, coffee maker or kettle. No bathroom counter space. A mirror behind the door that you cannot see yourself in. It literally had zero comforting qualities. No basic necessities. I feel completely scammed into paying that much for the room my friend and I stayed in. The common areas were cute and had rustic details. Our room completely lacked in that area. Zero personal touches. I do not recommend staying here. Oh and the light in our bathroom was two different tones of bulb??? Not a big deal, just again, zero attention to detail. read more

My fiancee and I stayed at deer lodge over the Easter long weekend for a wedding. Overall, it was a pretty average experience but the phrase "you get what you pay for" was definitely accurate in this scenario. My fiancee and I only paid 360 for 3 days and 3 nights, which for lake Louise, is an amazing deal. Again, deer lodge is an older building, which I'm sure adds to the charm but our weekend was filled with inconveniences that made our stay simply average. Firstly, we didn't have hot water for almost 2 days. That was a tad annoying as my fiancee and I love and need our hot showers. Secondly, this issue was paired with there being no hot tub available. I had heard from our first night, that one one of the bridesmaids actually got a rash from the hot tub so the staff had to empty the hottub and refill it again. We finally tried it out on Sunday and it wasn't super hot, and was very strongly beach scented. Overall, though the rooftop tub was beautiful and in an ideal location; no complaints about that at all. The service was ok in general except housekeeping ended up leaving a giant bag of dirty towels in our bedroom on our 3rd day there. There is no room service here at all, so I went down to the lounge to get some dinner and brought the plate up to our room. The room we had was again average. There wasn't a balcony and you have to hold the toilet handle for about 20 seconds before it flushes. The bed was super comfortable though, but limited storage in the room itself. It's a great location and an excellent deal, money wise. However, I envision that these types of issues will continue to exist at deer lodge so just be aware of the inconveniences you might walk into, unless you're ok with dealing with them for the price you're getting. read more

My wife and I stayed here while on vacation in the Canadian Rockies and looking for affordable lodging near Lake Louise. We were pleasantly surprised. The hotel has a really charming old-world wood lodge feel and is really beautiful. It's actually the exact kind of place I would have pictured staying in the Canadian Rockies. The rooms are quaint, so if you're looking for luxury this is not the place for you. Although, I'm not sure why anyone would be spending anytime in their room when in Lake Louise. The hot tub on the roof with a view of Lake Louise was very cool and definitely worth the time. So if you're looking for a great price/quality ratio in Lake Louise this is it! The hotel itself was a 3/4-star experience, but what put it over the top and made the 5-star rating absolutely necessary was the restaurant, which was by far the highlight. We had one of the best meals of our lives in the Deer Lodge restaurant, no exaggeration! The food, atmosphere and service were all spectacular and if you're staying here, you absolutely need to eat here. We had the Buffalo and Elk plate, Gnocchi and Quinoa cake. It was all incredible. The beer and drinks were also fantastic. I also have to mention our server, Riley, he was great. By the end of the meal, I felt like he was more of a friend rather than our server. He took the time to talk to us about the area, gave us great advice and really was everything you would want from a server at a tourist area like this. This is another Canadian resort hotel that I haven't actually stayed overnight. This property is owned by the same company that owns the Buffalo Mountain Lodge (Banff) and the Emerald Lake Lodge (Yoho). I have previously stayed and dined at the Buffalo Mountain Lodge and I think that this company has a really great service model. And someday I will stay here at the Deer Lodge, with it's handsome log building (some of it original), comfy and rustic looking rooms and the hot tub on the roof. The Deer Lodge is conveniently on the road to Lake Louise and at least from the Caribou Lounge has a pretty good view of the Glacier. I have also had a very good lunch in the Mount Fairview Dining Room. read more

The hotel side of the house is certainly better then the restaurant. We stayed two nights and we're forced to book two separate rooms based on availability. No problems though as it's a touristy area and tight bookings are the norm. We checked in on the afternoon of our first day and the girl at the counter was very nice. She gave us our keys, and while she couldn't switch us to our room on the second day to save us a move, she offered to have our luggage moved the next morning which was nice of her. Our room the first night was a dump. It looked exactly like it probably did in the 1920's when it opened, only older. The room was roughly 12'x12' with a double bed, a rickety chair and desk, and a very small bathroom. No tv but that was not an issue. The next night our room was much nicer. I believe it was a "heritage room", but whatever it was called it was recently renovated and had a much cleaner feel. It also had a nice balcony with a mountain view. The bed in here was a king and it was WAY comfier then the prior night. Spend the extra coin and get the nicer room, you won't regret it. read more

1) no ac, only hitter - an old hitter which making so much noise when you turn it off, made us wake up 3 times during the night, and even made the floor and bed to shake. There was a point we actually tought the room/lodge is about to explode. (the lodge give you ear plugs for it). 2) shower - temp of water kept changing every 10 seconds from fire hot, to ice cold. 3) the sink itself had two water faucet, one for super hot water, and the other for super cold water.. So every use of it included screaming.. 4) bathroom had no vent at all.. so if youre going number 2, the room gonna stink also. 5) more about its restaurant - too expensive and I swear the steak was so small I wanted to cry for its price The reason Im giving two stars and not one only, Is for the lodge crew, which was super helpful and friendly. read more

I've stayed at the Fairmont Pacific Rim -- and that gets a five-star rating. Using that as a guide, this is sooo close to that, despite the vast difference in date of construction and facilities offered. No, there's no remote control of drapes and lights. No, there's no TV in the mirror of the bathroom. No, the carpet isn't designed to look like birch bark nor are the rooms built in asymmetrical design. BUT! It's in Banff National Park, and is a five-minute walk from one of the loveliest sights in the world -- Lake Louise. The building appears rustic and indeed some of the public areas have wooden beams and walls but the rooms are modern and nicely appointed with an awesome tub and a shower which actually has some pressure to it! Nope, no TV -- but free wireless Internet, so who really needs a TV? Plus, they will wheel a TV into your room with a DVD player if you want to watch movies. They have an outdoor hot tub with an amazing view of the glacier that feeds Lake Louise and the tub is open year-round. They also have a sauna and steam room. And they have extremely high quality meals provided in their lounge and their restaurant -- the quality nearly meets that of Eden, the five diamond restaurant in the Rimrock in Banff, and the price of a typical meal is half of a nearly comparable meal at Eden. Free parking (self-park at the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise is $25, valet is $35) is a bonus. You do need to be able to climb stairs if you have a room that's not on ground floor, and there are a goodly amount of stairs so I'm not sure how wheelchair-accessible it is. Some rooms have balconies, which are soooo lovely. Don't worry about having a room facing the road; it also then faces the south sun and at night, hardly anyone uses the road. Jennifer M. reports in her review that the rooms are small -- our room, #36, was larger than most I've stayed in. One unfortunate thing is the thinness of the walls. Perhaps it is the ventilation shafts and not the walls themselves, but I could often hear my neighbours. Woe to you who shares a wall with a baby! I *love* babies but I don't travel hundreds of kilometres for a restful holiday to hear a less-than-twelve-month-old cry at 3am. EDIT: maybe it's the room doors that leak noise as I mostly hear folks in the hallways. I also love the Paradise Bungalows, but I think Deer Lodge has usurped the number one place to stay in Lake Louise from them! You won't regret staying here, I promise. read more

When we checked in, the staff was nice, but it seemed they overbooked our rooms, so they had to move us. They use regular keys, which while it has a nostalgia feel, it's not very secure. We ended up losing a key on the hike and they didn't have a key smith come out to change the locks, which I thought was interesting. It was very hot in the rooms, even in October. They didn't have air conditioning. They sent up a couple fans, which worked fine. It has an old cabin feel and while we liked that, there was water damage and mold on the upper walls/ceilings of the shower. I would stay again, especially due to the location and price to Lake Louise, but it isn't the most basically updated place. I love old cabin feels, but air conditioning, secure key locks, and no mold is a good start. read more

We didn't stay here; we were staying at Chateau Lake Louise. However, when we were told that we'd have to have dinner at the Chateau either at 5:30 or after 9, we decided to try the restaurant at Deer Lodge, a walkable half-mile from the Chateau. It was great. Our server, Bence, was friendly, knowledgeable, and competent. He recommended the Atlantic salmon and it was the best we've had in Canada. For example, the salmon at Coast restaurant in Vancouver was bland-tasting. (The very nice waitress whisked it away and gave me the excellent ling cod my husband had ordered.) We had a nice salmon at the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge, but the one at Deer Lodge was even better, with a crispy crust and perfectly cooked insides. My husband ordered a honey brown ale, but the server brought a honey wheat ale by mistake. He offered to bring my husband the honey brown, but my husband tasted the wheat ale and decided he liked it. We also shared a plate of pickled vegetables, hummus, olive paste, and pita bread. I really enjoyed the pickled fennel and the cantaloupe marinated in mustard and sugar. We couldn't even identify the cantaloupe, but it was delicious. We're planning to return there for breakfast. So if you can't get into the stuffier Chateau Lake Louise (which does have magnificent views), try the Deer Lodge. The food is excellent. read more

We didn't make any plans for our Rockies trip, just stumbled upon treasure after treasure, and Deer Lodge delivered! Originally we were going to be in a tiny room with a double bed, but the front desk generously upgraded us to a heritage room (I think she called it), with a king-size bed, balcony with a little table and two chairs and a lovely view of the mountains. We cracked the sliding glass door at night to enjoy the sound of the stream rushing by. The room was impeccably clean, large, and comfortable. The bed and pillows were perfect, and I enjoyed the L'Occitane toiletries. WiFi was great. We didn't miss the TV for a second. The front desk kindly put our cool pack/cooler in their fridge because there wasn't one in the room, so we had cold champagne and tasty cheeses for breakfast. We could faintly hear people in the hall and a couple of times during our stay, I heard someone in one of the adjoining rooms if they made a loud sound, but otherwise all we could hear was the stream and birds. The historical hotel has narrow, confusing hallways, and fun little side rooms. If you want a cookie-cutter place that could have been plopped anywhere, there are plenty of other hotels around. I loved the character of the place. Star-gazing was amazing from the rooftop hot tub! We had a delicious dinner with amazing server Jonah (I may have this wrong), and in the morning, we planned our day in the main room in front of a roaring fire while another guest played the piano. Maybe if staff were avail we wouldn't have made the mistake. reluctant to seat us without reservation, even though restaurant was empty. Server was quick to rush us as soon as sat down. Came 3 times in 5 minutes to take order...not professional. Menu was lacking in choice, especially for the area/guests you are trying to attract. Kitchen must be run by cooks not a chef. Very poor combinations, without a substitute selection. Salmon with coleslaw, warm potato salad and tartar sauce?! Web site says their was an extensive wine list...pages. I asked and was given a very short wine menu, maybe 8 selections. All very run to your local store to buy, at very inflated price. And bottle price was exactly the same as glass price...no discount for the bottle. After the bland main course, and wine selection ( I had a beer...1, wife had a glass of wine...1) we couldn't bring ourselves to try dessert. Couldn't leave fast enough. The best food in Lake Louise and some of the best food I've had anywhere. We went there after a full day of hiking and the food hit the spot. I have vegetarian risotto and my daughter had the salmon. Perfect cooked and the temperature of the food was perfect. We finished off with an exquisite cheese cake. Server was amazing. Great location because you can walk to Lake Louise so you do not not have to deal with the crowded parking situation at the lake, yet it's half the cost of the Fairmont, the only other option that's at a walkable location to the lake. I did not experience any of the dirty/dusty room conditions that others experienced. However, I did purposely book a room in the newer section of the lodge to help avoid it. There's a huge line between charming and just downright antiquated, and Deer Lodge has crossed it. Our visit was met with unclean rooms that lacked basics like temperature controlled water, and clean linens. There's no A/C, so if you're feeling warm, you have to open the window to get a cool burst of mountain air--no complaints here. But in our original room, there were bugs dead and alive on the windowsill because of a gap between the wall and the window. We contacted the front desk who offered us another room, uttering the words, "it's an upgrade." The room we moved into is about 3m x 4m, so I must be missing the added value. I appreciate their professionalism and the swift decision making to accommodate us. Now, some people may think, you're in the woods, its better than camping, but hear me out. After driving from Jasper to Lake Louise and spending a few hours hiking, the last thing you want to deal with at bedtime is unclean rooms and more bugs. Besides that, if you're making a decision about where to stay for an important event, like a honeymoon or a getaway, heed warning. Overall, I think Deer Lodge that serves a National Park with more than five million visitors annually is overdue for an upgrade in guest services and renovations. read more

In a way I agree with the negative comments from certain people who called it a dump... For example there is one hallway on the second floor that literally I felt like I was in a horror movie like psycho... That part of the hotel is about 80 years old and it smells absolutely terrible like the worst mildew ever and stucco ceiling's are stained and the walls are really ugly... However fortunately I was in room 2027 which is slightly newer wing which I would recommend. The room itself was clean, not a terrible view, very comfortable beds and clean sheets and nice bathroom, nothing to write home about but it certainly could be much worse, everything is clean and that is the important part, and it smelled lovely and clean. Best of all the shampoos and conditioners and soaps and etc. were above and beyond, they were LOccitane!!!!!! The only other time I've seen those amenities was when my husband was with four seasons hotels head office for 25 years and that was the same quality we got in those bathrooms. However four seasons often charges $6000 to $40000 per room per night, I got this lovely room for three people for only $150 and that included a $30 delicious dinner charcuterie with a huge variety of amazing game meats and fresh made bread and even a fascinating pickled cantaloupe that was five months old... And two spectacular glasses of wine then also came to $30. Plus the location absolutely cannot be beat, obviously it is not quite as good as the Château Lake Louise which shares its driveway which is literally sitting on the lake, but it is even closer to the ski resort. All of this for $150. For the people who are complaining, honestly what do you expect for this price? The history of the place is incredible, did you know it started as a one room log cabin tea room hundred years ago, it's all the same original wood and post beams an incredible hi gorgeous Log cabin ceiling, and then expanded into the dining room and then expanded into a hotel. The lounge attached to the original tea room has an amazing comfy cheerful fireplace. I hate it when you go to restaurants and hotels for Apres ski and they have big fireplaces that are not turned on, but this one was always on which is exactly as it should be...And the restaurant was absolutely stunning, many thanks to my amazing waitress two nights ago Alyssa, she was spectacular and I suggested to her boss she needs a raise... And yesterday morning for breakfast Niall was wonderful as well. Can you believe I had a delicious bagel, Some great cream cheese and chives that did not come out of a stupid plastic package with tinfoil wrapping, and homemade marmalade and homemade Huckleberry jam, and everything came to $4.50!!!! That is great value. Yes they did have a nice hot tub with a great view, however it looks like it was built in the 70s and unfortunately the water was not really hot it was just tepid and it was also broken, doesn't give you any bubbles. What's the point in a hot tub with no motor. We stayed as an Xmas gift from my guy. The lodge was old and I liked it very much. The beds were pretty comfortable and the rooms were fair. Downside? No wi-fi and no hot tub available. Upon arriving the desk person was polite but a bit snotty as in - wondering why we didn't seem to like the lack of a hot tub (which was part of the draw to go there). The restaurant was nice, pricey, but the server was quite good/friendly. Oh and there was no t.v. in the room. So yeah $$$ for basically a bed. We've been home a few days now and I still haven't received my receipt (c/card req'd at time of check in) as perhaps they still don't have internet???? Ridiculous. I would have given this 2 stars but I did like the antique-ness of the hotel and really in Lake Louise, the price was fair considering what the other places are. Started off with a bad impression with 2 ladies at the front counter that looked like we were an imposition walking up to them. They asked if we were checking in with a tone of voice that was like "why haven't you spoken up already?" Not sure if it's that I booked using Hotels.com or if they hate gays but they gave us a tiny tiny room with maybe (big maybe) double sized bed on a third story of a hotel that had no elevators. We stopped here after our road trip to Jasper! Parking and walking to entrance was a little difficult for people with disabilities. The restaurant is very nice as well as their staff. Nice fireplace and sitting area. Wild game on wall are fascinating ! We had the soup of the day, spinach and asparagus . It was ok. I ordered the caribou. It was medallions in a nice rich sauce. Multiple problems: 1. Booked one night in the old section, one night in the new much nicer section. I forget and they never caught it either - upon check-in this should have been noticed and I should have been told "back your bags and they will be in the new room when you come back" as it was at Bear Hill Lodge in Jasper. 2. Multiple times received incorrect and inconsistent information about shuttle to Moraine Lake. Eventually received the one page handout with correct info. This should have been given out at check-in. 3. No plug-in outside of bathroom that was accessible to guests. There should have been a power strip to plug in our phones, etc. No excuse for this missing as there have been multiple complaints about this in the past. 4. Service was very slow on the patio the second night (45 minutes to get ice cream?) . Part of the bill was knocked off for this but when we checked out the full bill was there - not what I signed. 5. Buffet breakfast was very overpriced and what was left at 10AM (closes at 11) looked like leftovers from people's plates. We would not have eaten it if the staff had said they were embarrassed and it was free. 6. Parking for latecomers seemed to be iffy. Recommendations: 1. Spend the money and get a bigger room otherwise decide if the pluses outweigh the negatives. 2. Pluses are short walk to Lake Louise without parking problems and unbelievable views from the hot tub. You have to decide if the negatives - and they are significant - are overcome by the parking/hot tub. Otherwise I would stay in the village. I know "big changes are coming" but nothing on this list costs money except for the $10 power strip. I have stayed here over 10 times between 1980 and 2010 with complete satisfaction. I was so excited to be in Lake Louise. I found this cozy historic lodge through instagram. I'm so happy we stayed here! Sadly for us the rooftop hot tub decided to stop working during some -30/-40 Celsius temps days before we got there. The manager upgraded us to a gorgeous king suit with a magical view of Mount Fairmount! Waking up and seeing that was something of my dreams. read more

We usually stay in Banff but I thought since we were skiing at Lake Louise; we should give this place a try. What a mistake!!! We had three rooms booked for our ski trip and all three stunk like something died there. The first thing my husband said was " I hope we don't get bed bugs". There are warnings on the taps because of the old plumbing that you may scald yourself. Also throughout the night the pipes were banging within the walls i.e. no sleeping. There is no elevator; so not handicap friendly. No TV's in any of the room and our toilet seat was broken off the hinges. There is very little parking; so good luck with luggage. We paid $360 for our room/ 1 night accom. and two lift tickets. Which seemed like a deal on their web site. I should have known better that it was too good to be true. It was not worth it at all and I will never stay there again. If I had the choice between sleeping in a cave with an angry bear or staying at Deer Lodge .........I would choose the bear! read more

10/03/15 - 10/04/15: Old property with much better lodging prices compared to Chateau Lake Louise It is a "tad" primitive compared to the Chateau. But who cares! It feels like a "hunter's lodge" with the Great Room log beam walls and ceiling. The restaurant is "old school" but nice. It's a short walk to Lake Louise. read more

Over the top gamey restaurant. We had the elk rib eye and caribou medallions. They were great, well cooked. The presentation and service was really good. The place is a bit pretentious, but it's "high-end" so what do you expect. The portions were just ok, but very pricey. Certainly the opposite extreme from most places in Lake Louise. read more
