Great food. Terrible service from the owner right down to the children that are working.

Wow. That's the way I make pizza at home - piled so high ingredients are falling off. Friendly staff, a hidden gem.

Our server was sweet, attentive, helpful. I want to give Cafe International high marks based on this single quality. Alas, the food makes or breaks a restaurant. The ambience was warm, comfortable and interesting. I enjoyed looking at all the details of decor. I found it to be just "clean enough." One of the two bathroom stall doors would not fully close. The portions of our dinner plate and appetizer were generous, although, the size of the salad bar plate was fairly small. They definitely intend for the salad to be a "side." The lettuce looked wilted, almost like it was slightly frozen, so we made a salad with mostly tomatoes, mushrooms, cheese and croutons. Finally, the final bill, around $35, for an appetizer, dinner and two bottled Pepsis was reasonable, especially as prices for eating out are climbing. Now for the big disappointment: the Jagerschnitzel, our main course, was terrible. The pork was flavorless. The mushroom gravy overshadowed the meat and also lacked notable flavor and the spatzel tasted like balls of flour and water (yep, like little balls of homemade Play dough.) The best part of the dish was the green beans, which may have come from a can. The dinner rolls were ......soft? That's the best I can do. My husband and I were hungry so we ate what we could but we both agreed it was one of the worst meals we've had out in a long time. Our potato skins were fine; lots of potato, not crispy but more like a chunk of a baked potato, with melted cheese and real bacon. We ordered water and couldn't get past the smell of the well water. Our server, who said she lives in the area and is accustomed to it, also acknowledged it can be unpleasant for many. We couldn't order tea or fountain drinks because they use the well water so we had to order a bottled Pepsi. The menu has many items to choose from. I'm wondering if we would have been better off with a sandwich, something ordinary and difficult to prepare poorly. The reviews from other Yelpers are so positive I'm wondering if I'm just not a fan of this type of dish. That's possible. I'll never know because I don't plan to return.

The quaint…read moreambience, friendly service (we were one of the first guests to arrive on a Friday morning mid-May) and fresh brewed decaf were the highlights. The food, which is most important, was a big disappointment. I am a cinnamon roll connoisseur and was so excited to try the rolls that past Yelpers raved about. They were out of caramel today so we ordered the grilled roll with pecans and homemade buttercream frosting. It looked dry and tasted even drier. Barely warm, flourey and tasteless. The frosting was the best part. The menu of choices looks wonderful and diverse for a small cafe. I was delighted to see shrimp and grits. The skillet was very small, the food was hot (a plus) but it was heavy on the grits, which lacked flavor and space on shrimp (only 4), sausage and sauce. I ate the toppings with half the grits and left the rest. My husband ordered the hoagie sandwich with hash browns. His comment was "a lot of bread and minimal filling" with "luke warm" hash browns that were more spongy than crispy. It's hard to go wrong with breakfast, but somehow Lazy Toaster has missed the mark. The concept is fun, the menu is great, yet the recipes and preparation could use some major improvements. The tab ($41 for two) was not bad, but was high for the quality. We liked the decor yet felt the cleanliness was lacking (sticky floors and no paper towels in the bathroom). A breakfast place in East Tawas is a plus; I hope this cafe commits to some improvements and stays around.

Accompanying hash browns were equally well made and tasty where just the right amount of grease/butter was used to make my food (no greasy food here!). This all too often is an issue you see with these small breakfast centric restaurants up north that I was so pleased not to see here at the Lazy Toaster. Relative to the restaurant and staff, Lazy Toaster has a nice comfortable rustic "Up north" feel to it which I enjoyed where the staff was super friendly with great follow up throughout the meal and and where they are definately on top of their game when it comes to Coffee top-offs. Nice! Overall, this is definately one of the better breakfast spots in the greater Tawas/Oscoda/Harrisville area and is now on my short list of go to restaurants in the area.

We then sat down outside on the patio for lunch. The service was very good. I ordered the triple berry turkey panini and thought it was very good. It was unique with lots of dried berries and a raspberry creme. My wife ordered the quiche of the day and it came with spinach, goat cheese and ham. Hers also came with a fruit cup and scone. The scone had a nice lemon creme that came with it which was a great touch. She really enjoyed her dish. This is definitely a nice stop if you are in the Clare area.

The homey decor paired with the friendly service made it feel like you were visiting a friend who also happens to be a baker extraordinaire! The staff here goes above and beyond with the drink attentiveness--our waitress kept the refills coming and even offered us a coffee to go as the place was winding down. Now that's hospitality! Located conveniently across from the Tesla superchargers, it's the perfect pit stop for some recharge-yourself-while-you-recharge-the-car vibes. And don't leave without trying a slice of their famous pie. We were tipped off by the waitress that the buttermilk and berry pies are the crowd favorites, and I can see why! If you're a pie person, don't miss. Food-wise, it's classic Michigan fare. The chicken and rice soup of the day was exactly what you'd expect--simple, no-frills, but satisfying. I also tried the quiche of the day, which came with a fruit cup (not the freshest fruit ever, but no complaints here) and a homemade scone that was delicious! The pesto chicken sandwich hit the spot, too. Whether you're here for the pies, the quiche, or just to soak up the local charm, Mulberry Cafe has you covered. And with an attached gift shop, you might just find a cute souvenir to remember your visit.
