One of the best Chinese food in the state, definitely worth a visit. The atmosphere is something to be experienced to fully appreciate. Decor is nice and the building itself is beautiful. It still has a coat room and a pay phone (not connected) for those who are nostalgic. I am stuck on the General's chicken while my wife experimented with a few other dishes, and nothing was disappointing. Tried the chicken cream corn soup (a rare find in Michigan) and found it very tasty (and hot temperature wise). One thing I really liked was that they cooked with the whole dried red pepper, something that I feel enhanced the "heat". Not many Chinese restaurants up here have it and it's a differentiator in my opinion. It's also not salt heavy so my BP doesn't spike. The staff is friendly and attentive. Love the food, the service, and the decor! We started going to the China Inn when the Chinese restaurant in our town (East Tawas) closed due to the pandemic. The cook at China Inn is some how related to the one who used to be at Hsing's Garden in Tawas. The food is delicious! I am particularly fond of the "Triple Delight" featuring beef, chicken, and shrimp with fresh vegetables and a delicious sauce. My partner orders sweet & sour chicken or beef with broccoli. The wonton soup is spectacular--it's delicate broth is perfection. Partner loves the egg drop soup. The staff is friendly and polite--the decor and ambiance has a calming nature and definitely exudes a Chinese feeling. I highly recommend China Inn in West Branch, MI. Was visiting west branch for an up north vacation. I'm from metro Detroit. Where I was at, I had no signal so I ordered from this place blind. All I had was a takeout menu. I ordered the egg drop soup, almond chicken, general tso, and the walnut shrimp. Total was about $50. I thought this place was legit when they had walnut shrimp since it's an authentic Chinese dish. The place also looked legit, reminded me of the authentic places by my area. I'm sorry guys but this place isn't a good American-Chinese and Chinese place. I think there is only 2 Chinese restaurants in west branch that I know of. I was greatly disappointed with this place. The egg drop soup had pickles in it. No idea why? The almond chicken is supposed to be a fried chicken and then sauce over it. The walnut shrimp was supposed to be in a mayo like sauce. It all wasn't good. A friend (who lives in the area) suggested we get Chinese food. Turns out I had been here about four years prior so I had low expectations going in as the prior experience was not the greatest either. My friend strongly recommended avoiding the egg foo young as he had it once and it looked nothing like typical egg foo young. Something made me ask about the almond chicken and I am glad I did - it was dark meat chicken, non breaded and in a light sauce. Whew! Glad I heard that so I ordered beef and broccoli. While waiting for lunch to arrive, I did a quick Yelp scan and somebody else complained about the almond boneless chicken. What was good: fast service, decent tasting beef in my entree Not as good: two fried crab ragoons take up part of your plate so you get less entree, combo does not include egg roll Next time I want Chinese food and in this area, I will skip it snd go to just about any other restaurant instead. read more

China Inn is one of two Chinese restaurants in West branch. While it's not fantastic, it is far better than the other option and the food is OK. The staff is very friendly, the prices are very reasonable and it's in this old historic building, which is kind of cool. the portion sizes are pretty small in my opinion, but certainly enough for a meal as long as you order an eggroll or something to go with it. I've been several times and it's consistently decent. Not my favorite Chinese restaurant by any measure, but my favorite Chinese restaurant in west branch. read more

I am from down state (live here now) and I've had a lot of very good and a lot of mediocre Chinese food and this is sincerely in the top rated! I was very pleasantly surprised and crave this about every other week now. Everything tastes very fresh. I love the hot and sour soup, which is hard to find just right. The last time I was there I had cashew shrimp which was outstanding! I wish I could remember what I had the fist time I was there but I can't, I just know I loved it and I was looking forward to going back: I'll add updates as I try different things. read more

This place is slightly below average. If you like Panda Express you might like it here. It's more of an American version of Chinese food. The setting is a beautiful antique building. Our waitress was very friendly and fast. She was super sweet and very attentive. Unfortunately the chef is very inflexible. The menu has beef and broccoli or seafood and mixed vegetables. I asked for seafood and broccoli. After checking with the chef, I was told my request was not possible, even if I was willing to pay extra. The lunch soup choices are egg drop or sweet and sour. I was able to pay extra for wonton soup. Should have skipped soup, it looks great but the main ingredient in all three was salt. read more

Gross and disappointing Hubby ordered Hunan Chicken and I ordered General Tso both were lunch orders, got home to see each order looked exactly the same except hubby's had broccoli in his, both taste exactly the same which was ridiculously sweet and each had 3 pieces of small dried out Chicken. Decent Chinese food in West Branch. I found our server very attentive to our needs. We ordered the special of the day- orange chicken and an additional Hunan chicken. We also ordered egg drop soup based on Yelp recommendations. The food was pretty good. The restaurant is very clean. My only complaint was that the orange chicken had large pieces of orange peel in it. The flavoring was good but the orange peel was not edible and was throughout the entire dish. My first time. Mom's second. Neither of us was disappointed. I was pleasantly surprised by the dining area. Very nice. All the staff were friendly and helpful. The food was very good. We both started with Wonton Soup. Some of the best broth I've had in a while. The wontons could have been a little softer on the chew but were still good. I love all the extras in the soup--snow peas, carrots, mushrooms, and water chestnuts. I had Sesame Chicken which was sweet with a tang--liked it a lot since I ate it all. Came with a scoop of brown rice instead of the usual fried or white. There also were two Rangoon's. Mom had the asparagus chicken which I tasted. It too was very good. I know Mom liked it since she ate all of her's. She always takes home a doggie bag--not this time. Next time I'm hungry for chinese, I'll drive the 35 minutes. read more
