Okay, so I'm leaving this place at 4 stars until I come back and try the food, then I'm hoping to raise it to 5. I came here for a couple quick beers and just really enjoyed the entire vibe of the place. It was around 9:30 on a Sat and the place wasn't too packed. We sat at the bar and our friendly bartender gave us a little run down of the beers. I loved the two I tried, but my fav being "Abominable Snow", which the bartender described as tasting like "blue moon on crack." Very yummy. They crowd was cool too. Word on the street is that they're going to close soon, another victim of the virus. Business seems to be very slow, you'd think they'd step up their game and do better but they've done even worse. Over the years the food has been hit or miss but when it's good it's good, albeit salty. Service is typically sub par, be prepared to wait. Don't ask to speak to the manager, they're absent and it shows. It's a shame, lots of good memories there. read more

That's right. I came back to feed my new found addiction. This time, I brought a bunch of colleagues over on a Thursday. Now that "Thursday" is of major significance. They serve smoked wings!! These wings are incredibly delicious. Usually smoked stuff are a bit dry, these wings are juicy. The smoked (jerked I think) taste sinks all the way into the core for those fortunate chickens. The wings are a huge hit! Of course somethings never change....the beers are awesome. I think it was love at first sight for several people. And yes, many people also got lost. What a gem! We sought out the location of the Defiant Brewery after trying to order an Orange Cream beer at a local restaurant only to find out they were out. What's the next best thing? Going to the brewery itself, of course. The Defiant Brewery isn't anything special, but it is pretty awesome. The bar is simple yet efficient, and there are no computers to enter orders. Large copper kettles full of beer liven the room, and chalk boards listing delicious options for beverages hang high on the wall. Food is apparently new to the establishment, and we were pleasantly surprised. We opted for the Ample Sampler -- pulled pork, ribs, brisket, wings, corn bread, and 3 sides -- which was plenty for the two of us. As a matter of fact, my boyfriend and I both thought that the ribs were the best we'd ever had, with meat that practically fell of the bones. The only bummer being the fact that they were out of a few of the sides that we wanted to order, so we'll just have to go back one of these days to try the full menu. Prices are more than reasonable. The Orange Cream beer was just $3.75 for a mug and $13 for a growler. Premium beers are a bit pricier, but are still reasonable. Food prices range depending on what you order, and our Ample Sampler was about $35. Since the place is pretty simple, we opted to pay with cash. They may accept credit cards, but I would play it safe and bring plenty of cash along just in case they don't. I'll be back, and hope to see you there when I return. read more

I've gone to this Brewery a few times. When I first started going it was on the smaller side. However, ever since they've expanded I've been very pleased with how much seating they have, both at the bar & all the tables. The wooden bar itself is rather large as it wraps around the entire right side. The new back room has a large projector screen, a stage for bands, & picnic tables for guests to sit at. The place itself is rather dim & it gives off a rustic look to the place. The bar has plenty of different beer choices to choose from. If you're into heavier types of beers they have plenty of options as well as lighter options if you like that as well. The food is also pretty good here. When I have ordered here, I have gotten the dry rub wings. It's a different type of taste than regular wings but when you add the sauces that they provide with them, they taste delicious. I have not been to the brewery when a band has been playing but I've heard through friends that it's a lot of fun. What I like is that you can rent games such as cards against humanity or Monopoly to play with friends in the back seating area. The only reason that this brewery is not getting 5 stars is that I wish it had a few more tv's for games. Other than that, I really enjoy going here. read more

This place is perfection. Really. Great vibe, great beer, and great BBQ! I would kill for their DIPA-- their double IPA is what I dream of at night and their limited edition triple is unbelievable! I thoroughly enjoyed making repeat visits to this place while I was working nearby --- enjoyed the awesome brewers/bartenders-- had a GREAT time with the waitstaff too. I just love everything about this place! And although their BBQ is the bomb, I also have totally enjoyed bringing a picnic lunch here too on a Sat or Sun afternoon. We came here on a Friday night at around 730 with another couple. You seat yourself, and there were plenty of open tables for us. We decided to sit on a 4 person high top in the bar area. They also have benches in the back, but my friend and I wanted some privacy and back support. The ambiance was good. The place is what you'd expect a brewery to look like, with an old warehouse, bare bones feel. Place is cash only so bring cash. The beer left a lot to be desired. Most of it was mediocre at best. The orange cream ale and the double ipa were both good. We also tried the ipa, the rye ipa, the Belgian trippel, and the stout. They all missed the mark and were bland for their respective varieties. For food, we shared the ample sample, an extra order of wings, the brisket cheese steak tacos, and an order of the Hawaiian beef jerky. 3 sides plus corn bread and pickles come with the ample sample. We opted for Mac and cheese, brisket chili, and coleslaw. All of the food tasted good, but it definitely wasn't the best bbq I've ever had, and it had its shortcomings. The ribs were very over seasoned. The dry rub was caked on. I wasn't sure if I was eating meat or spices. The brisket was good but a large percentage of it was fat, and not the kind of fat you want to eat. The pork was okay, but I've made better tasting pulled pork in my crock pot. The best meat on the plate was the wings. Thankfully, we listened to yelp, and our friend we were with who has been to defiant before, and got an extra order of the wings. The dry rub was excellent. It's flavorful and has a sweet after taste. They bring out a bbq sauce and a hot sauce to put on your meats. Not sure if these are homemade or not, but they're not great. The bbq sauce was a little chunky and flavorless. In terms of sides, we were disappointed with the mac and cheese. It was pretty overcooked and mushy. However, the coleslaw and brisket chili were both tasty. The brisket cheese steak tacos were not what we thought they'd be. They just threw some brisket and their mushy mac and cheese on store bought soft tacos. They're mislabeled if you ask me. They should call them what they are. Do not get the Hawaiian beef jerky!!!! We were told it had a little heat, but it was doused in pepper. We were all coughing and trying to convince ourselves that it wasn't that bad, but it was. Again, the best beers were the orange cream ale and the double ipa. If you're going to get food, get the wings and skip the rest. read more

Last night was my first time coming to defiant in years. Wow! This place has changed. I did enjoy the charm of the old smaller brewery but was very impressed by the expansion. I met with friends last night and we sat in the beer hall. I ordered a combo plate of pulled pork and ribs to share with my boyfriend. The pulled pork was cold but the ribs were great. I enjoyed the side of Mac and cheese that came with it too. Service was wonderful. The staff constantly came around to see if we needed more of anything and were very helpful. Beers on tap are cheap and delicious. Between the 5 people I came with we tried every beer they had on tap (some multiple times) all were delicious. I have a soft spot for the medusa IPA as it is my go too. But enjoyed the seasonal Christmas ale as well. The expansion of brewery set up for a place for the community to come together. The long tables in back are great for big groups and they have tons of games you can play while you are drinking beer. My friends and I played corn hole that they had set up but I saw others playing darts, uno, monopoly, etc. there's also a stage for what I assume is the occasional live band and a large projector that was playing college football. Overall- it's definitely an upgrade from the last time I went there and wish I lived closer because it's a nice place to get together with friends. read more

Defiant is first and foremost a brewery so if you're looking for a place to drink, this is it. There's multiple types of their beers on tap in house: I've had the Little and Big Thumpers, Medusa IPA, Muddycreek, and Orange Creme and they're all good and cheap. But the real reason I like coming here isn't just for the beer, it's mostly for dat BBQ. The best barbecue I've had in NY is here. At a random warehouse/brewery next to some train tracks in Rockland. I've tried almost everything from the ribs to the brisket to the pulled pork, and they're all excellent, but the wings really stand out. They use a dry rub instead of dousing them in sauce, so they're less greasy yet more flavorful than your typical wings. Sides are pretty good too, but I've never met a plate of mac & cheese/baked beans/cornbread I didn't think was pretty good. Come early in the afternoon before they run out of food with 2-3 other people and get the Monster sampler to try a bit of everything. Or just get a pile of wings. By yourself. No shame. read more

Went here on Saturday with my husband. We decided to sit outside since the inside was kind of dank. Managed to snag a table outside, and waited for service. And waited....and finally, someone noticed we were waiting, and tried to take our order (but we had no tap list or Oktoberfest menus). I only drink sours/goses/sour IPAs, so there was nothing on tap for me. I had water and the bierwurst platter. The bierwurst was actually pretty good, but the saurkraut/applesace/overly-fried potato pancakes that came with it were pretty sub standard. My husband's brisket was dry and flavorless. Took forever to get the check, and then go inside to pay. Overall, the food was way overpriced, and the service painfully slow. My husband said the beer is ok. With so many better options in the area, I would not return. read more

What an awesome find in Pearl River. Located right across from the Jersey transit train. Its beers are unlike anything you will find elsewhere. Loving the seasonal Headless Horseman right now- as someone else said it definitely gives Southern Tier Pumpking a little competition The wings- now I have had different experiences with them. The wings- if you get them cooked properly are phenomenal. They use a spicy rub that creates this delicious crust on them and is simply delicious. However, I have been here and got the wings and they were burned to a black crisp- thus inedible. Overall a great find and just wish there was a little more consistency with wings because they truly are a great pairing with the awesome selection of beers here. read more

I will always go where the beer is good (and someone else will drive!). I had been waiting for months to try Defiant's Pumpkin Ale straight from the barrel but alas, the beer had run out! So many people had shown up on Friday and Saturday that by Sunday I was out of luck. Nonetheless the available brews were very good. Every Sunday they have a special cask ale for the week. On this particularly day they offered Honey Cask Ale. It was fantastic! It featured a sweet taste but worked well. I also highly recommend the Medusa IPA. I couple of pointers if you're looking to visit Defiant: (1) There are no TVs. Don't expect to come here and watch the game, its just a warehouse. (2) Pulled pork is only available on Friday and Saturday. All other days you can still buy cheese platters. (3) Tip your bartenders. Most of the time its the brewers themselves. Being a beer enthusiast not much can 'wow' me. Let me say, this place really wowed me. Not only that, but it's good enough to routinely make the two hour journey from my home in Philly to visit this place. I have to tell you I was a little concerned when I first saw this location - it's just a small little storefront in an industrial building. At least the benches out front seem welcoming. When you get inside it's much larger than it looks, and while somewhat spartan, the bar is welcoming. Every beer I had here was delicious, but let me tell you, their pumpkin beer Headless Horseman is without a doubt the best pumpkin ale I've ever had. I was completely blown away by it! It tastes like bottled pumpkin pie with a bit of alcohol added. Most of the more famous pumpkin brews (here's looking at you, Pumpking) taste so artificial compared to the delicious sweetness that is Headless Horseman. There isn't a single artificial aftertaste, so if you're into pumpkin beers and want something very natural tasting, definitely try it! Their orange cream ale offering is very unique, and very drinkable. It isn't overwhelmingly orange, but kind of tastes a bit like a creamsicle pop would in beer form. Their hefeweizen is great as well, being spicy and having a nice bite to it. Their pilsner is extremely clear and crisp. My least favorite offering was probably the Dirt Stout, and though it wasn't bad, it just ran a bit smoky for my tastes. The staff here is always very nice and extremely helpful. The food here is awesome, especially their beef jerky. If you like spice, try their Hawaiian offering, which is both fruity and spicy and any jerky lovers dream. All of the barbeque offerings I tried were legit, the ribs are big and juicy, the chili spicy and hearty, and the pulled pork has a lot of the flavorful burnt ends thrown in. Don't forget the cornbread and mac and cheese, both of which are probably very fattening, but also very filling. If you go, I suggest you do the whole experience. Get some barbeque, throw in some pints and let yourself be talked into one of their (very cheap) growlers. I wish I wasn't so far, because the closest distributer of their beers is still an hour away from me. That being said, this location is great, and I'm glad I found out about this great little brewery. read more

I wasn't a fan of the beer but then again, I'm a wheat/belgium/weiss beer drinker and they don't have any of those beers here. But I will happily come back for the BBQ. The brisket, chili brisket, and the wings were the best. It's not the typical hot wings but they're super delicious. Oh so disappointed with this place. The service is not very good. The beer is hot and the food is so so, while we did eat it, it left me wanting. I don't know what but it did leave me wanting something. The beer wasn't that good either, the stout was too sweet and the ale was flat. One of the people in our party who wasn't yet 21 wasn't even asked what she wanted to drink. She was totally ignored until I asked if she could have some water that they finally brought her some. Then to make matters worse they only take cash and the ATM was out of order. Lucky we had some cash or we would have found ourselves in a pickle! We ordered a platter of food for 40 dollars and it included 4 wings, a couple of slices of brisket, about 4 ribs and a little pulled pork. The barbecue sauce they have us was so cold it ruined the warm meat. So we had cold meat and hot beer. Not my kind of place, I won't be back. Three words, Viking War Feast. I didnt even read the description i just ordered it. There were 5 of us. Great food great beer bring cash.

Mediocrity meets friendly service. Exceptional service and fair prices used to be all you really wanted in a restaurant. And if that's what you care about, Defiant Brewing might be just the place for you. However if you're seeking truly great beer and food, you may be a little hard pressed to find it here (although other reviews say otherwise, so take this with a grain of salt). There were no checks or screenings, so if you're concerned about that for covid reasons, be aware. The only real covid measures there seemed to be were signs on the tables that said no more than 4 people, and ample space in between. The staff greeted us quickly at the bar, and got my Xmas ale & cider poured quickly. Our food came in about 15 minutes, hot and fresh. The best word to describe all of our fare, is mediocre. The xmas ale was very.... OK. The cider was less than OK, tasting more like a syrupy soda than a true cider. The ribs were also very OK, and the Brisket was... you guessed it, very average. The beans we didn't really touch after the first couple of bites, and the coleslaw was something you'd expect at a great chain restaurant. All of this is to say that we rather enjoyed our experience, and didn't hate the food, but also I will forget about this place as soon as I am done writing this review. read more

I stopped by here yesterday with my wife and some of her cousins. We were staying in Pearl River for the long weekend and I had no idea that there was a brewery in town. It wasn't until I found Defiants beer in Shoprite that I became aware of it. Then in talking with my wife's cousins we decided to all head there later in the evening. We arrived shortly after 8:30 to a half full space. It consisted of a rather long shaped bar with only a skinny space before bumping in further down. At that point you could also see the copper kettles and fermenters used to make their beer. After sitting down and perusing their chalkboard menu I decided to order the rye IPA. Whenever all of the beers had been poured for our group we tried to open a tab with a credit card only to be told that it was cash only. That wasn't a problem for us and if it had been then they had an ATM on the premises. I ended up enjoying their rye IPA. It had the flavor of a rye beer at the start before the flavor got into the hoppiness that made it an IPA. After I had finished that beer I decided to try their spelt beer. It had a very unique but pleasing flavor profile that I am not sure that I have had before. They also served BBQ here and while it looked pretty good we had all eaten just before coming. The bottom line for me is that I would head back here again in the future. I enjoyed both of the beers that I had here and thought our bartender was nice as well. My only wish for the future is that they would have a taster or flight so that it would be easier to try more of their beers. read more

I highly, highly recommend Defiant. I've been a few times, and it never disappoints. The bartenders are extremely friendly and knowledgeable of all their beers. The food is first come, first serve and once they run out for the day they don't make any more. The Medusa IPA is my favorite, but I make it a point to try a new one every time, usually the seasonals. If you go with a group definitely order a sampler platter. I usually get the ample sampler which feeds 3 people perfectly. The brisket, ribs, corn bread and cole slaw are amazing. So basically, I love all their food. And don;t forget to order jerky to go! This place is my boyfriend's and he's friends go to spot. They have even spent the past two New Year's Eves here and I think we're going back for another year! The beers are all very good, my favorite is the Little Thumper and Orange Cream Beer. I'm not a beer expert, but I'm more than confident you can find a couple of favorites. If anything ask you're friendly brewtender and they will definitely help you filter through the menu. The BBQ is delicious, some of the best I've had and definitely the best I've had in New York. The wings and brisket are my favs. Brisket is very tender and yes it has a little bit of fat but it's the best part! The wings are sweet and have that great smoky flavor, no need for sauce. Favorite side definitely is the Mac & Cheese, it's that great homemade stuff my "friend's mom" would make on Sunday dinners. Yea I know I should have said that "my mom" made, but my mom is Filipino and doesn't know how to make mac & cheese... she even messed up the Kraft box... don't judge. Deviled Eggs are on point too! Prices are very affordable, especially compared to NYC prices, I can drink comfortably under $30 and eat under $50. Not so bad. My only negative about this place is that there is just one bathroom for women, during New Year's it sucked bouncing up and down waiting for the line of ladies in front of you. Got off the train at the Pearl River stop. Across the way was this place. My husband loves stouts so we came in to check it things out. It was also happy to see they had food! And, the food was delish at that. We had the ribs, chicken wings and brisket. The rub was wonderful and the hot sauce was so tasty - yum! Met the Chef and congratulated him for a job well done. The meal came with cornbread and 2 sides. We chose coleslaw and chili. Dang! So good. The coleslaw wasn't sweet and had a real good tartness to it. Hubby tried the three stouts they had on tap and his favorite was the Solarvore. We're visiting from Hawaii so we won't make it back too much, but I'm hoping that this review will help to bring people in to eat the food. We want them to be around when we come back to visit! Fake News is one of my favorite IPAs and thats what I had. What ticked me off was a cash only policy. Went today for the first time with my husband and our 2 kids. What else can I say but paradise! Fantastic beer and the Ample Sampler was perfect! The ribs were delicious and the sides (baked beans, pickles, cole slaw, and Mac n cheese) were very tasty and not too salty like at other BBQ places. Had the Little Thumper IPA and the Medusa IPA, so good and my husband who isn't really a beer drinker enjoyed a Belgian brew with orange & vanilla beer, very flavorful. A few people have recommended this place to me and I followed up with my own research which showed almost unanimous acclaim of this place. My experience was lackluster. BEER: I'm a huge fan of IPA's, double IPA's, and stouts but the beer here was just ok to me. My friends and I ordered the medusa and weapons grade. It seemed to be served lukewarm. FOOD: I shared the ample sampler with my friends, which was a great deal and perfect amount of food for 3 girls. The ample sampler provides a variety of items from the menu with 3 choices of sides. We chose the baked beans, potato salad, and Mac and cheese. All the side choices we had were good, but nothing remarkable. The pulled pork was extremely dry, not juicy at all. It seemed overcooked. I prefer my beef brisket to be more tender, maybe we were given a drier cut of the meat. The wings also weren't anything special. My friends and I agreed that the meat was underwhelming, and also agreed that the ribs were the best item we had. I can understand the allure of this place in its uniqueness in the area,and respect them for their craft. Maybe they were having a bad day when I came, but I don't think I'll return. read more

Came here on a quiet Sunday night with a friend and found the place completely empty, so we took a seat at the bar and was happily greeted by the bartender. He was very helpful in explaining the different beers that were on tap for the night. I started off with the fake news IPA and my friend got the stout (forgot the name of it). We both love darker beers and the bartender noticed that, so he suggested that we get the New Zeagland IPA next, which was a great suggestion. It had the classic hoppy taste and a slight hint of fruit at the end. Then we went with a drier IPA to finish the night. I've been on a brewery binge lately, so I was super excited to try this place out and was not disappointed. They offered a variety of beers and had ample seating. I have only had the beer but this is one of the best local breweries in the Tri-State area. One of my favorites is the pumpkin ale which comes out in October. The IPAs are also great and I have tried many of the seasonal's. Looking forward to trying the BBQ which looked fantastic last few times we were in. read more
