Not all CrossFit gyms are the same and this is a shining example of that! I've wanted to try out CrossFit gyms for years but had always heard the horror stories about it being a cult or the "exclusivity" of a gym or their not being welcoming to new people or they'll get you injured. Let me just say that Marcus and his staff couldn't be the more opposite! This gym is open and welcoming AND the COMMUNITY he's built and fostered here is second to none. The athletes are each others biggest cheerleaders and help get each other through every workout. The care and concern for his athletes, mentally and physically should be the standard ANY gym strives for. And he routinely has free, open days for people to come in and see what it's all about. Next week will mark 6 months I've participated in CrossFit. Up till now, I've never stuck with anything longer then 3 months. As a result, I didn't come into the program with many long term goals. I knew I was out of shape and was needing to do something to get back the energy I used to have during the day. Heather did a great job holding me back at the beginning and easing me into the workouts. It's very easy when you start off to think you can do more. Heather and her team provide many ways to scale the exercises so you can participate with all skill levels and not feel like you have to sit on the sideline. Scaling also provides improvement to be recognized more frequently. With so much improvement experienced over the past 6 months, I now have many long term goals planned. On top of equipment access and personal training, you also get nutrition advice. My eating habits have changed several times throughout my experience in CrossFit and each change brings with it more improvement. With rising health care costs, this is a very affordable way to get healthy and stay healthy. This isn't a muscle gym with mirrors everywhere. This isn't an aerobics class to burn some calories for an hour. This is full of individuals wanting to change the direction their lives were headed. read more

As I write this, I am a newbie - just started two weeks ago. It's something I should have started a LONG time ago. My Daughter has been going to Heather's classes, and has experienced great results. I decided to give it a try, and I couldn't be happier with my decision. If you're new to CrossFit, I would suggest you take the Elements class by yourself. It's a little more cost, but well worh the one-on-one training to learn all the proper techniiques. After finishing the introductory classes, it's simple to join a regular class. Everything is scalable, so you'll start out doing a percentage of what the regulars are doing until you work up to 100% workouts. Heather is a great coach and makes everyone feel comfortable and is available to answer questions and give advice (via email) outside of classes. Anyone can do this program! As Heather says, the hardest step is to simply get started, and after that, you're hooked. Even though it's not easy, and anything beneficial rarely is, you'll look forward to your next workout! I started at Defiant as a CrossFit newbie back in April of this year. Prior to this, I was at the boot camp at Clay Madsen Rec Center. I liked it, but I felt I was kind of stuck not making much progress. I was fairly fit, but not really getting stronger. And you know what they say- "The good is the enemy of the great." My friend from CMRC boot camp, Sherry, started attending Defiant. She would come to class and report all of the cool s*%^ she was doing in her workouts. Of course, I started getting jealous and discontent with my boot camp routine. With her encouragement, I tried a class with her. Then a week. At that point, I was hooked and signed up. All levels of athletes coexist at Defiant. Each is encouraged by the fabulous coaches to achieve growth. I thought I would be intimidated by the stronger, faster folks working out there, but all I've received is praise and camaraderie. I've made tons of friends and really look forward to coming to workout here. The facilities are well maintained and have ample equipment for all of the attendees. I love the flexible class system here as well! I've started to notice some body changes in myself and have been getting so much stronger. For several years I had fairly consistent back pain, from having a full time sit down job. I ran a lot, but I didn't know until I got to defiant that while cardio is good, it isn't a substitute for working your core. That, and I goofed off as a kid in gym class and never learned to stretch properly :) Doctors just wanted to give me muscle relaxers. Deep tissue massage worked for two days. Other trainers gave me a very small set of exercises that presumably would have helped in the long run, but they didn't. Jennifer and Marcus from defiant worked with me in private training sessions two one hour sessions per week. In a matter of two months my back was healed, thanks in large part to defiant's guidance on stretches that actually heal my back. They also told me the science behind ice vs heating pads and those foam roller things that are a god send. I stretch regularly now, and while I'll never be a true strong cross fitter, and I'll never be comfortable enough in my own skin to be at the gym when others are, despite all these quirky things, Jennifer and Marcus helped me and fixed my back with me. A year ago if you told me I should go to a cross fit gym I would have laughed it off as a fad. Now I know better, all cross fit is is a quick paced workout with various exercises you would receive in any other training class. A year ago if I had to move from one house to the other, I simply would not have been able to do it - at all. Just this past week I moved more than one hundred boxes, some of them quite heavy from one house to the other without fatigue for hours. I cannot explain how incredible a transformation that is compared to the chronic back pain I had a year ago. A year ago I would fear leaning over to fill my dogs food bowl, I would fear kneeling down to pick up small trash cans, and I'd often just leave something small that fell on the floor alone. Now I automatically crouch down the way one should for all of these things. No more groans, no more wondering if I'll hurt my back in some sinister way that I won't feel that night but will for three days after. My lower back was so bad that I would constantly want to lay down. It was a real struggle often to make it through a weeks work sitting at the computer because my back hurt so often. Walks, stretches defiant showed to me, and a ton of different exercises in very affordable private training sessions - these are the reasons I feel so much better today. I first was attracted to Defiant because of their programming. I wanted a box that offered creative WODs with various types of movements that would make me have to YouTube it the night before. Every single workout that I've done at Defiant felt rewarding. The schedule is at your own leisure, with plenty of class times to choose from -- which was important for me. My job causes for me to have wacky schedules all the time, and Jennifer Furse (the owner) was always very supportive and flexible! I personally like that all of the coaches are athletic and able to do almost if not all of the advanced CrossFit movements. You gotta practice what you preach, you know? They also encourage and motivate you, make it fun, and push you to your fullest potential. Most of all, what I love about this box is the community. This is my first Crossfit experience and I'm hooked. The coaches explain all movements in depth and even though there's a class full of people you still get the individual attention you need if you're having trouble with a certain exercise. Nine months ago I was one of the first Defiant clients to begin the journey with Coach Heather and I am still going strong. I have lost over 35 pounds, my cholesterol has dropped from nearly 300 into the healthy range below 200 and my fitness and strength levels are better than ever. In short, I have added years to my life and taken years off my appearance. I plan to remain a dedicated member at Defiant Crossfit because I have a high stress job and fitness is important to me. Solid box, good programming, good coaching. Showers/bathrooms need a good cleaning but all in all a good experience.

Defiant CrossFit is an awesome CrossFit gym. The trainers are excellent, and everyone in the classes are great to train with. There are a good variety of class schedules that really help to accommodate the gym members. The workouts are extremely effective at building strength, reducing body fat, and just becoming more fit. Each workout is different. Having constantly varied workouts done at a high intensity makes it effective as well as the exercises, which are all very functional. Coupled with the nutrition coaching that they give, results occur at a very rapid rate. I recommend to anyone looking to get in better shape to give Defiant CrossFit a try. read more

Awesome place to workout. I started about 8 months ago and I'm still at it which says a lot! I'm over 50 and a heart patient and Heather has managed to keep me encouraged and tailor the workouts for me. I'm so much stronger and have a much greater energy level than ever before! I have been coming to Defiant Crossfit for a few months now and could not be more in love! I'm pretty hard to please when it comes to coaches but I enjoy every single one at Defiant. The programming is also on point. They have found the perfect formula for doing things frequently enough that you can build on your skills while still keeping everyday new and exciting. I go 6 days a week and not once have I looked at the workout before class and thought "ehh maybe I'll go for a run instead." In fact I actually turn into quite the grinch if I have to miss a class. If all of that wasn't enough reason to fall in love with this gym let me tell you about the people! Both the coaches and fellow athletes are absolutely golden! No matter if it's your first time or your millionth time you'll be taken care of, looked out for, and welcomed. With only three months of coming to Defiant I had lost all my baby weight(30lbs total, but let's be honest that was no babies fault.
