I have been quite impressed with both Definitive's Seattle and Bellevue locations. When I first visited Definitive's Bellevue location over 10 years ago, my initial impression was that their focus was more on home theater installations than on 2-channel audio for music listening. Definitive certainly does have some of the nicest looking listening rooms in the Seattle area. But I've learned through subsequent visits that they do have a high degree of expertise in putting together good sounding systems. In addition to their work in home theater and home automation, the folks at Definitive are highly capable of putting together great sounding systems for serious music listeners and for people looking to have music playing around the house. Though the LP12 is an older design, it has been continually updated through the years. I appreciate that on a recent visit, Hans at the Seattle store took the time to allow me to hear several configurations (with increasing sound quality) of the LP12 turntable with two levels of phono preamps. Though I have loved the sound of the LP12 turntable in the past, my impression was that newer turntable designs have since surpassed what the LP12 can do. Boy, was I wrong. I hesitate to say this because I'm not sure whether they actually believe the misinformation they're peddling or are brazenly brandishing it to get sales, but my experience with Definitive Audio was like walking into a den of scam artists. I expressed my intent to get a Marantz receiver, and asked about 48Gbps-compatible HDMI cables capable of carrying a 4k/120Hz signal. As I intended to carry the signal from my PC to the receiver, and the receiver to the TV, I was looking at purchasing two HDMI cables, one 5ft and one 15ft. The cables they presented me with would have cost in excess of $400, probably ~$500 after tax. I asked if these were truly necessary, and was met with near-derision at the suggestion that anything cheaper could deliver the same experience. When asked for an explanation why, I was met with vague terms like "sparkling" and told that the picture would simply not look the same, despite coming from a digital signal. "Surely I don't need cables with magnetic shielding," I pondered aloud. "Uh, actually you do--" one of the salesman returned, as he hastened to justify the price. This explanation included the phrase "48 KHz bandwidth cable," which was uttered in the presence of 3 other employees at the counter and not one stepped forth to correct him. Gave me a pretty good idea of their technical understanding. Anyway, despite their insistence I bought only the receiver, later buying the aforementioned cables online for $25 after tax. It's been roughly a month since then and I have no issues delivering a 4k 120Hz signal to my TV. No "sparkling," no signal cut-out, no missing pixels, no derezzing, downscaling, or any other such nonsense. I conferred with another local audio retailer to ask about my experience and they confirmed it's a common practice in the audio business. Just thinking about the brazen confidence with which they tried to scam me makes me sick. read more

I feel compelled to leave a 2nd review of Definitive after another attempt to do business with them that ended up with an alarmingly high quote that was well off market prices. Here are the details of my most recent hi-fi endeavors: I had decided to move away from physical media and sell my Oppo 203 and upgrade to the Kaleidescape Strato C and Terra Movie Server system. Kaleidescape is a product I had admired for years from a distance. I checked with Kaleidescape for the nearest dealer and Definitive popped up. I always prefer to business locally so I reached out to the same salesman I had worked with before, despite a rather unpleasant experience, to get a quote for the Strato C and Movie Server. The price I was quoted was $10k. No discounts were offered for being a previous customer for a fairly large project. Alarmed at this price, I immediately checked with another dealer, and was offered a price for the exact product bundle for over $2k less. Further, they offered another discount on top of that bundle price for being a USCG veteran. I immediately placed the order with the 2nd authorized dealer I spoke to. My salesman followed up a day or so later and I told him I had already placed the order and explained that the Definitive pricing was well off the competition. He explained that he mistakenly quoted that priced and assured me that the $10k price would have been "caught" by someone. It was then he also reluctantly indicated that Definitive would have matched the price of the other dealer - thought not a word of this was uttered during the initial conversation. Maybe I've just had bad luck with Definitive...but each time I have had a hi-fi project in mind the quotes have been sloppy with mistakes and bloated on pricing and my salesman has been defensive and condescending. Had my salesman quoted the correct pricing and opened our initial conversation with something like this, I would have purchased from them: "Thank you very much for being a valued repeat customer, we will match/beat any authorized dealer's price so feel confident you are getting the best deal...". They sell quality products...but the customer service does not match the luxury prices they charge. read more

A couple of years ago, I picked up an old Linn turntable with the goal of refurbishing it to the latest specs. After accumulating the necessary parts, and building my own base, I approached Ron, who recommended a fantastic Dynavector cartridge to top it off. He then assembled the table and tuned the suspension. After letting the cartridge break in for three months, I can say that the table sounds spectacular, thanks to Ron's recommendation and meticulous assembly skills. Highly recommended! read more

I was having some issues with my turntable so I took it in to check all the settings and to have them examine my cartridge. Hans took care of me and really knew his stuff. I ended up buy a new cartridge at his recommendation and boy, has it transformed my sound. Now here's the thing... I don't own a high end turntable nor do I really know my audiophile chops, but I do appreciate good sound. Though the cartridge was only $800 (cheap by audiophile standards), Hans spent a ton of time with me and really listened to what I like and don't like and thus directed me in the right direction. I wanted to write this review for a long time but never had the time until now. I have been buying speakers and amps and subwoofers from this place since the early 90s. And since day one, their customer service has been always world class and has always provided me with what I needed. I bought my first hifi set from them, my magnapan speakers set, that I used form the early 90s until 2010. They helped me with everything I needed even came to my house to help me set up. I also bought my first Sony 65" TV in 2003 there. And many more equipments since. Recently I purchased my Focal speakers there...I was not happy, I returned them, they helped me sell them, then I bought another set of small speakers, I was not happy, and finally bought a new upgraded set of Focal speakers. In short, I believe I was a difficult and demanding customer, because I want equipments that suited my budget, satisfied my taste and lasted as long as the first purchase (at least 10 years) AND DESPITE many returns and purchases, their service has been always world class. Sometime, I think that I don't deserve the service since I only spent few thousands compare to people that spend so much more. Special kudos to Sales Person John Peters. read more

It's O.K. to want a lot of money. It would be rather nice if you did something worthwhile to earn it, though. I recall coming in ten years ago to buy some stereo speakers. I was told that I would have no problem returning them in case I was unhappy with them. Well, in a few days, I did, and the reception I received was unfriendly, rude, and unhelpful. I was shocked. I wrote to the president of the company about the treatment I received. I received no response whatsoever. A few days later, I went to Magnolia Hi-fi and bought some speakers. These guys know their audio. Here you will find incredibly knowledgable staff with top-notch facilities. They are one of two B&W distributions in the Pacific NW and I think may be the only distributor of Linn in the area as well. They also sell televisions and many other high-end audio equipment. Even if you are unfamiliar with the aforementioned names, don't know a watt from a woofer, these guys will definitely help. When it comes to audio, many things are subjective, but at least they will steer you in the right direction. You'll listen through your entire music collection all over again once you've bought a set up from Definitive. Admittedly, their offerings are not for the overly price-sensitive. They do not carry the same stuff as your typical big-box retailer. Sure, we don't all have $45,000 to spare on a couple speakers, but boy is it sure fun to demo them - pure bliss for your ears. The sales reps will gladly let you play your favorite cd in their $15,000 cd player even if you have no intention of purchasing [the cd player]. Both their Bellevue store and Seattle store have a close-out/open box section - you can find some great deals in there; especially since speakers don't go on 'sale' like other consumer items. Last weekend I walked out with some beautiful B&W CM-1 bookshelf speakers for my master bedroom. I've been spending most my time listening to all my favorite songs all over again - these speakers bring out an incredible amount of detail I did not hear before. They have a very cool trade-up program where you can recoup the cost you paid for your item as long as you spend it on something 2x the cost. I.E. If you buy $1000 speakers, 6 months later you have to buy $2000 speakers but you only pay the difference of $1000. Unfortunately, that's the way it goes with hi-fi stuff, the price increases exponentially with only a marginal increase in improvement, your personal pleasure however, is immeasurable. read more

I've had my surround sound for about 10 years. It was a Sony 6-disk surround sound player that also played DVD. I put that in past tense because the DVD part of it broke. It still sounded good, still played CDs and radio, and I was able to connect my Blu-ray player to it. I wanted to upgrade. I wanted to go from a good system to a great system. Since I am not a real audiophile I really had to start from square one and figure out what is out there and what fits my lifestyle and budget. A surround system is nice but I live in an apartment and don't watch enough movies where I would want to utilize all of the speakers (plus I didn't want all of those wires around my apartment). I also wanted my system to be able to play the music and podcasts that's on my iPhone. I was leaning towards a Sonos, which a friend of mine has and is a great system. But before I make a purchase like that I wanted to do my research and talk to people to see if I am really getting my bang for my buck. I was around the Roosevelt area because I wanted to check out what Magnolia Hi-fi had. I remember my uncle, who knew about stereo equipment, used to rave about this place. I also checked out Hawthorne across the street. Both places have great equipment and I am sure I would have been happy with a purchase from them. But, again, when you are making a purchase this large you really have to think about what you are getting and have no regrets. As I was about to leave I drove past Definitive Audio and decided to check them out. Jesse helped me out and he was awesome. When I walked in the first thing I asked about was Sonos because that was the only thing I really knew about. He told me they had it but I had to ask about what he would recommend for someone like me. I told him what I was looking for, the specs and price point, and he pointed me to a Rotel amp and two really great sounding B&W speakers. Now these were expensive. I paid more than I ever thought I would pay. While I loved music and wanted good speakers I didn't think I'd pay what I did. But the punch line is that the system I bought is on the cheaper side of what is available at Definitive Audio. I was shown systems that ranged from $7000 and above. I felt comfortable with my purchase. Jesse was informative and not at all pushy. His passion and love for music and all things audio really came out when we talked. I couldn't wait to go home, set up the system and start listening to music. I don't see myself upgrading anytime soon but if I do I know where I will be going first. This is a really nice store. They have a few listening rooms. Their inventory ranges from high end to really high end. No cheapo AV stuff here. A great place if you're an audiophile or looking to build a theatre at home. Nice staff who are willing to let you browse the fancy hardware. I'm not exactly into $40k stereos, but there's lots of McIntosh here if you are. I bought some nice stuff and got a decent price from them. The people were really friendly. The one bit of feedback I would have is that in their main listening area, you need their help to try different receivers with different speakers, etc. It would be nice if this was easier and the media was more readily available. read more

If you are in the market for high-end audio and home theater, Definitive should be your first and last stop. Over the course of several weeks, I worked with John, one of their sales guys, on selecting matching a/v gear to meet my high-end tastes while still staying within a budget. How do I know these guys are good? I came back several times armed with all the crazy things I read on the internet--asked a million questions--and they never flinched. I half expect sales people to roll their eyes when I say something like, "so I was reading through some forums online... what do you think about _____?" John and the folks at Definitive very thoughtfully responded to all of my questions--even the obscure ones. So okay, these guys are friendly, know their stuff, and have a great selection of gear (including stuff 100x the cost of what I could afford). As someone who LOVES researching gadgets and making purchases on the internet, I hold brick and mortar establishments to a pretty high standard to get my business. What sets Definitive apart from your average big box, snooty specialty shop or bargain basement eCommerce site is their willingness to go the extra mile. Sure, I spent a few thousand dollars, but they also have customers that outfit their private yachts and mansions with systems that probably cost as much as my house. Throughout the entire sales process, I felt like I was getting the same level of service that the big guys do. They even offered to come out to my house and help me make the final tweaks on positioning/levels/etc. Will I go back to Definitive? Without question. read more

If you have some cash to spend on a hi-fi system and want to check out some of best stuff available on the market these days, this is probably the only place in Seattle that you can go audition a wide selection of high end stuff. Speakers generally start about $1000/pair here (they are very good), and go up to astronomical prices. They even have a demo room in the back with hand made Italian Sonus Faber towers with Mcintosh monoblock amps for each one - you know for when you win the lottery.... I interacted with three different people here. One over the phone who was extremely helpful in answering a wide range of very detailed and technical questions regarding DACs, amplification, and speaker performance, another who helped me audition speakers who paid meticulous attention to the setup angles, and another who was very friendly and down to earth. My take away, is that the approach of the staff here seems to me to be quite different person to person, but all my interactions were positive. The demo rooms here are quite luxurious and have a large selection of interesting, difficult to find gear. During the speaker audition, the sales rep played a classic music performance, a Tom Petty studio recording, and a Pink Floyd live set (I was interested in live music recordings). Nothing wrong here. I didn't rate them 5 stars, because when I requested to play certain tracks that I had used to benchmark other speakers with, it was a bit awkward. They only have Tidal and should have Deezer as well (for a place of this caliber). The track I wanted was not on Tidal, so he improvised and played Spotify over a phone into the system. This took a while to get going. In the end it all worked out and he was very accommodating, but it seemed like my request was an unusual one -- one they didn't have a good solution for. I'm a big believer that the speakers, DACs, and amplifier should sound good with the type of music you love. So I prefer to demo things with songs of my choosing. Went home happy with a heavily discounted pair of floor model speakers with the intention of upgrading the amplifier down the road. The sales rep offered to loan out an integrated amplifier to take home for a day to see how it works in my home - that's pretty awesome if you ask me! If you want a totally different hi-fi experience, check out the more mom and pop style Hawthorne Stereo across the street - they also have high end gear, but not as big of selection. I have bought a number of items from Definitive Audio. I typically work with Hans, whose knowledge and customer service are second to none. My experience has been the same with many of the other sales representatives. I am certain that I will continue to bring my business to Definitive. The store can be intimidating to those who are new to this kind of stuff - but I assure you that they can accommodate a wide variety of budgets. As would be expected with a store of this caliber, they allow plenty of time for you to demo your favorite music on any equipment you're interested in. You can spend hours if you like, and make multiple visits. They understand that this kind of investment may take repeat visits to come to a final determination. They will also let you demo equipment at home (with a deposit). Their staff's knowledge of all things audio equipment is matched by their knowledge of music. They have a nice area, newly setup, where they sell current audiophile remasters of albums. It's clear that while they are all gearheads, their primary goal is to help you get a setup that maximizes your enjoyment of music. Highly recommended. read more

Fantastic service. Even though I was shopping for low-end (by their standards) speakers and had a ton of questions, I never once got the usual condescending vibe you get from high-end audio salespeople. The salesperson (Adam) was very helpful and patient even though I made it pretty clear from the beginning that I was leaning towards the cheapest speakers in the place (which I ended up buying). The store is also very nice inside. As a contrast, I had just left Speakerlab next door, where the place was kind of a dump, and the sales guy acted like anything less than his $750/pair "low-end" speakers is trash and suggested I go to Best Buy. read more

I bought a new home that was prewired for speakers in each room, and had an unfinished movie theatre room. I met with Hans at the Seattle location and came up with a solution based on my budget. I ended up with a six figure install, including a significant install time, theatre furniture, and everything needed to get my home to what I expected. These guys did a great job, and everything is as expected. They were all nice people to work with, and have equipment for many different budget levels. I would recommend them based on my experience. Several years ago (when everything just started going digital) I was in the market for a hifi. I went here, and wondered why the CD to amp was analogue instead of digital. The response was that "There's signal loss converting from copper to optical and back". This was obviously wrong as it's a digital signal to the end, or pushing the high quality of the a/d in the CD player. I got the impression that the staff didn't know their stuff, so went up the road to magnolia hifi, where they sorted me out with a fine system. Definitive has decent selection of brands and pieces. I have never bought anything there, but have looked many times. I find the salespeople knowledgeable but also a bit too intent on the sale. The thing that I have found most disappointing with them is their inability or, more likely, unwillingness to do serious blind A/B listening comparisons. I wanted to bring my Accuphase amp in to do a side by side against a Rotel I was thinking of purchasing and they simply didn't have the ability to do that: i.e. hook up my amp and their amp to the same preamp/source and same set of speakers so that I could switch back and forth, blindly, to compare. They said every time I wanted to switch they would have to go back and change cables blah blah blah. A simple switching box would take care of that. I'm one of those people who avoids hype like the plague and believes that the ONLY way to compare gear is to do it blindly and with all the other components the same. Can't do it at Definitive. To be fair, though, Magnolia is the same way. read more

After purchasing a high-end set of headphones I expected the sales associate to simply go in the back, retrieve my purchased item from the stockroom, and hand it over, so I could leave a satisfied and happy customer... NOPE! Strangely, I was told they don't actually carry the headphones in stock... wait, what? (I think that would have been relevant information to impart up front, before I got all excited and paid for them!) Then I was told it would take TWO WEEKS to receive "my order," which wouldn't be shipped to me, but rather to the store... um, really? Ok, I guess. I had already paid in full, and I wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt, but so far I wasn't feeling great about the whole situation (I should have trusted my instincts). However, I'm patient and figured good things come to those that wait, so... I waited. Surely they would call/email me at some point to check in, give an update, or even tell me the headphones had arrived early... NOPE! After waiting TWO WEEKS with NO COMMUNICATION I called them on the day my purchase was scheduled to arrive and was told, "sorry" it looks like it will take at least another week. I asked why and was told they didn't know. Now my patience was at an end... I told them that was unacceptable, and indicated I would like to cancel the order. The person I was speaking with then accused me of "showrooming," which is both INSULTING and profoundly incorrect, given that I had purchased the item, paid for it in full, and had already given them an excessive amount of time to deliver it (considering the reality of modern logistics)! I don't know if their sales associate was just trying to be mean or intimidate me, but they were wrong; their comments were COMPLETELY UNJUSTIFIED and OFFENSIVE to someone who holds integrity as a core value! They then informed me that I couldn't cancel an order over the phone; I would need to go back into the store if I wanted to do that. Well, since I had been hoping to go there to pick up my headphones anyway, that certainly wasn't going to a problem. It's hard to express how DISGUSTED I was with their customer service at this point. To make an even longer story short... I was at least able to cancel the order and receive a refund after going back in, but it was a REALLY BAD EXPERIENCE and I won't be going back. However, I am thankful for the reminder... if you can't rely on a business to complete a basic transaction correctly, then you certainly can't rely on them to take care of significantly more valuable transactions in the future. From that perspective, I guess I dodged a bullet... it would have been much WORSE if they had failed to deliver on the audio purchases I have made since. Fortunately, I received those items from another business that I'm now working with on an ongoing basis... they actually provide exceptional customer service, carry high-end audio equipment in stock, and deliver the items I need when I need them. It's really not that hard... so simply save yourself the headache, hassle, and time by choosing a company that doesn't BREAK THEIR PROMISES! read more

I have done business with DA for about 25 years. No more. My last purchase was the last. We came in asking for one salesman and given to another who was less than honest. In fact he was let go because of this. To get the issue reversed we had to pay more (this was a 20,000 purchase to begin with). That was 700.00 for a fix that worked intermitently for about 1 year. We worked with Tom and Definitive Audio for a fairly large multi-room A/V install. We came away very happy with the results. They were extremely knowledgeable and cool to work with. We ended up dialing smart solutions for all three levels of our home that look and sound amazing. Their tech team absolutely nailed it, all components were installed flawlessly. At first I thought maybe I would do some of the install work myself, but in the end after seeing the level of precision the Definitive team worked at, I'm glad I left it to the experts. Definitive carries the best brands such as Vandersteen, Linn, Wilson Audio, Bowers & Wilkins, and the list goes on and on. The staff is extremely knowledgable and most have been in the business for quite some time. Definitive's showrooms both in Bellevue and Seattle are the perfect environment for trying out audio equipment. Carrie Connolly as a fabulous sales person at Definitive Audio. First I have to say I don't normally take the time to write this type of email because I usually end up too busy. I just purchased over $4000.00 in new equipment at your store. It started out with a phone call to your Roosevelt store to figure out if I really was a DA customer. I really only needed to replace a receiver and wasn't sure my needs were sophisticated enough for all the fancy equipment they sell. Carrie was very easy going but very knowledgeable. She easily walked me through options. I was super impressed when she quickly pulled up my purchase at DA from 1993 and could speak to complementary new equipment. From start to finish she was professional, knowledgeable, really nice and never made me feel intimidated by the products. I ended up with new speakers, Sonos and a sub woofer. Truth be told I wanted to upgrade what I had and get smaller speakers but didn't want to deal with it unless it would be easy. We recently got a whole new sound system done by them and all I can say is WOW, are we impressed! If you are looking for a bargain, this is not the place, but if you are looking for high quality and professionalism, look no further. We love the new system and the guys who came and spent an entire day here to install it, cut holes in our dry wall to put new speakers in for surround sound, and get everything functional were great to work with and left the house with everything clean, orderly, and functioning beautifully. Superb. I went to the store to buy a traditional a/v set-up (receiver, speakers, remote) for home audio video. They down-sold me to a Sonos system that was less money, way less hassle and excellent quality. They do a lot of high-end stuff, but their prices for fundamentals - tv's, speakers, audio components - include units that are price-competitive. A cut above the big-box stores. read more
