We wanted Italian food and a comfortable atmosphere. We decided to try somewhere we hadn't been and called ahead to see if we needed reservations. They had an automated attendant that was a little frustrating to work around as we wanted to ask questions. Getting to a real person took awhile and we were pretty frustrated by the time we got through. We decided to just show up and take our chances and we are so glad we did. The dining room had an hour wait but we were able to sit in the bar area immediately. The bar area consisted of numerous booths and feels less like a bar and more like a distinguished upgrade of an Applebees. The staff was so attentive and everything came out so quickly. We tried the pizza fries - expecting a version of cheese pizza cut in strips. Imagine our surprise and delight when what was delivered was soft, squishy dough with sweet tomatoey pizza sauce arrived. It was amazing! The last bite was barely made when our entrees arrived, piping hot. We tried the pasta pesto with chicken and the chicken parm. Both were perfectly cooked and had such fresh, homemade flavors! Accompanied by the world's softest bread and flavored butter. The portions were huge and we brought more home than what we ate. The server was a highlight. So amazing and attentive. The staff worked together to provide an excellent experience - keeping drinks filled, clearing plates as they emptied, making sure we felt seen. So when I was looking for a special place to take my boyfriend for his birthday, I knew this was the perfect place (he'd never been there before). AMBIANCE They have remodeled since I'd been there last, and it looks absolutely beautiful; even the restrooms are decorated nicely. DRINKS It's not always easy to find well-made old fashioneds, but we decided to start off with a couple and try their's out; they did not disappoint, they were fabulous! FOOD He ordered lasagna and I ordered the shrimp pasta, which were both so incredibly good. Their red sauce is absolutely phenomenal and addicting! Our family celebrated two birthdays on a Saturday night, and they loved it! They want it to be our new family go-to restaurant for family events. We tried lasagna, spaghetti and meatballs, and a couple of other pastas that were delicious. We liked our beverages: dirty martini, lemon drop and mule. We visited DeGidio's this last week for the first time in a long time and what a fun night. We sat in the bar to catch up on MN sports as the Wild, Vikings and TWolves were all playing!! The bartender was fantastic and it was as fun to learn some of the history as this place has been a St Paul staple since 1933. Both the bar and dining room are cozy and the entire restaurant is full of regulars. Our dinners were yummy. Nothing over the top unique but solid pasta dishes and the tiramisu was delish. Went to DeGidios for my birthday and had a nice time. The restaurant has been around for close to 100 years so I was excited to go back as I've been here before and had enjoyable experiences. They have a cozy lounge dining room that provides an intimate setting for dinner. The food we tried was very good. Their basic marinara sauce is very robust and is a great compliment to their meatballs. The bolognese sauce is fairly acidic and has a slight spice to it. We also liked the heirloom tomato bruschetta as a starter. There were some hiccups with the service tonight. It was slow to place an order, some of our food was forgotten and took a long time to pay for our meal. During the dinner we had to find someone to track down our server who was absent. Later in the dinner they were hanging out with a co worker in another booth and took their time to come back to collect our tab. Maybe if I wasn't visiting for a special occasion I wouldn't be so sensitive to this but it was a letdown. Luckily the food is good so I'll go again! read more

We came here for my wife's birthday--our first time--and it was a solid choice. We'd heard a lot of great things, so we were excited to finally try it. We made reservations and were seated right away, which was a great start. The host was friendly, and our server was attentive without being overbearing--checking in regularly on drinks and making sure everything tasted right. We kicked things off with the buffalo wings. They had great flavor without too much heat, which I personally enjoyed. For the main course, I went with the burger, and my wife ordered the rigatoni alla vodka. My burger was filling, well-seasoned, and packed with flavor. The bun was just a touch on the firm side (I'll admit, I'm a bit of a burger snob), but overall it was very good. The fries, though, were excellent--definitely a highlight. My wife really enjoyed her dish as well--the sauce was creamy and flavorful, and the chicken was juicy. She mentioned it could've used a little fresh Parmesan and a bit more heat, since she likes some spice, but overall she was happy with it. Since it was her birthday they gave us a free desert and the server mentions the bread pudding which was very tasty. Overall, a great experience with good food, solid service, and a nice atmosphere. Finally made it to DeGidio's for a long-overdue yap sesh with a friend, and it definitely lived up to the hype. It was packed (yes, worth the wait), but once seated everything was great. For starters, I enjoyed an N/A beer and my friend had the old fashioned sampler. We shared the garlic cheese bread as an appetizer. I enjoyed the lasagna and my friend had the blackened shrimp Alfredo (I snagged a bite) and yummy everything was delicious. Dessert is typically a non-negotiable for me, so I tried the tiramisu which was good, but my friend's chocolate lava cake was the standout. Friendly service, Yummo eats, cozy atmosphere, and we stayed until closing just chatting it up. Can't wait to come back to try the DeGidio's burger. read more

An Italian staple since 1933 in downtown St Paul. I finally tried it after my in-laws were raving about it. Definitely high expectations going in from an Italian girl who grew up in NY and ancestors to immigrants from Italy. We went in through the side door (bar area) - not the main entrance and were immediately greeted and brought to a lovely booth. The ambience is great and old school world. Like you're hanging out with some gangsters in Brooklyn. The service was top notch. Food: I ordered the gluten free pasta arrabiata with shrimp. It's a spicy red sauce with gfree fusilli pasta. It was very good but for the cost of pasta and red sauce and shrimp...unfortunately not worth the cost for this Italian gal. I have to mention that our food came out extremely quickly! It was like under 5 mins. Crazy! I also ordered a glass of rose which was great too. Dessert - I ordered the spumoni which did not disappoint. Cherry, chocolate and pistachio ice cream. An Italian staple. And no I didn't share with my hubby. lol. With that being said...the ambience was great. Server was attentive. Sauce was delish but in my mind, it's just not worth the cost. DeGidio's has been around for a long time, but it's proven that it still has plenty of staying power. Admittedly, I haven't been here a ton over the years, but the interior doesn't imply its age, even if the menu sticks to a lot of Italian American classics. That said, even if it isn't avant-garde Italian cuisine, it's consistently satisfying, portions are generous and their lasagna is worth the trip alone. Their burger has also gotten a fair amount of notoriety lately, and while it's not on my Mt. Rushmore of burgers in the Twin Cities, it is quite good. Like the nearby Mancini's, DeGidio's is another St. Paul/West 7th stalwart, and I have no complaints about that. read more

This place was super nice! The lighting and everything gave a very fancy vibe. I felt like I should have dressed better. Service was great too. I told the waitress that I drink a lot, so she brought me 2 diet Cokes every time she came by. It was the best drink service I've had in a while. Also having water on the table is always a plus. The food was pretty decent too. All the portions are split there, as I shared with a friend. I enjoyed the salad, it had a good amount of dressing without over saturation. I wasn't able to finish my plate and didn't take a box. Meatballs were tough, likely over mixed. Flavor just ok. Pasta was cooked to a Perfect Al dente so I'll give them that. Chopped salad was enjoyable, portion size was good for the price and very flavorful. Bread is served with garlic butter. 3 slices for a table of 2. Parking is horrendous. Restaurant was fully booked for a Saturday night walk-in, so we had to grab a seat at the bar. Hostesses not friendly. No welcome coming in or thank you going out. Chad the bartender was busy, friendly enough but not intrusive. Overall experience was just ok, but $100 for dinner for two should be a little better than ok/average. Recently ate at DeGidio's for a midweek dinner with the girls! I loved the dark yet warmly lite atmosphere. Our waitress was very nice and gave us amble time to chat and make decisions. I was a little disappointed they didn't have any happy hour but I do get myself a mocktail that was flavorful and sweet! I ended up ordering the blackened shrimp alfredo! It was full of flavor and the noodles were perfect for holding the creamy sauce! Definitely will be back to try some more pastas. On a recent trip to Saint Paul we popped into DeGidio's and were welcomed by great service and some great Pasta before we made our way to a Twin's game. Cool spot would recommend for families or a date night. If you like my reviews, consider "following" my profile for reviews all across the SF Bay Area . Why "follow" someone? The bad- we had the following food(five people) pizza fries our daughter liked them, lasagna (wife thought it was acidic tasting with no flavor, mostaccioli with meatballs (2 of us had meatballs that were rubbery, my noodles were over cooked), hot dago (it was hot, but meatballs were rubbery, sauce bland.) and bruschetta toasted but came out in under five minutes nothing good nothing bad about the bruschetta. We ordered the Chicken Parmesan alla Vodka which was the special that evening and it was decent. A bit of a spicy kick that I wasn't expecting but the portion was good and the chicken was cooked nicely. The Chicken Fettuccine Alfredo was good. Decent portion and the Alfredo sauce was okay but was missing something. The best dish that we ordered was the Blackened Shrimp Alfredo. Same sauce as the chicken but the Blackened Shrimp adds extra flavor that sets this dish apart. For dessert we ordered the Spumoni. A very good bowl of ice cream with all of the flavors you expect from Spumoni. I have to mention that I really appreciate the dining room having a dedicated bar for drink service. Never a wait and the drinks are done very well. This restaurant can get busy. It does have a parking lot but don't be surprised if you have to park on a nearby street. read more

Came at peak time on a Wednesday to check it out - good news there's a parking lot (good for them it was packed!), and some street parking. First of, service was great! The server was super attentive and charismatic. I had the oldest old fashioned to drink which was chefs kiss. For dinner we started with the burrata caprise which was amazing, the included bread as well. For the entree I had the tortelloni bolognese which was absolutely packed with flavor. The sauce was perfect and the sausage had a slight spice that helped bring the dish together. My friend had the Fettuccine Alla Pesto with chicken that was also really good. I almost don't want to share how charming this romantic little restaurant is simply because I want to keep it a secret for me and my friends and family! Alas, I must share that service is spectacular! Seated right away and greeted quickly by Kaylee. She gave us her suggestions and shared the most popular dishes on the menu. It's located not too far from the MSP airport, but not too far from the heart of downtown St. Paul either. We've been here once before during a previous trip, but has now won us over as one of our favorites when visiting the cities! This is a St.Paul gem. While visiting Minnesota, did what yelp people do and searched for the best food. Yelp was spot on with the this gem. It gave a neighborhood vibe spot. I know if I lived here it would be in constant rotation. From entering to leaving the service was great. The food did not disappoint either. Their sauce is delicious. Very robust and flavorful. We started the meal with great appetizers, the meatballs, which one was more than enough for our table or three, stromboli and garlic cheese bread, anything to lather there sauce on. For our entries, the tortellini Bolognese was just amazing!!! I loved it. The other entries were chicken fettuccine Alfredo, the pasta was perfect. Then salmon diavola with huge Yukon potatoes. I have missed out on too many years of good pasta and to have it so close to me over the years makes me sad but I will just have to make up for it ;) Located on West 7th in St Paul DeGidios has a great parking lot (important in this area) and is close...but not too close...to event centers like the XCel Center etc. Beautiful space for a romantic dinner or night out with family/friends. There is also a nice bar area as well. We started with the Caesar salad which was very tasty and then moved on to the Rigatoni alla Vodka and added sausage ( Fantastic!!) and the Tagliatelle Bolognese (tasty and perfectly prepared). This place is just flat out cool. Before you swing by - make sure to check out the history behind the family and some of the old St. Paul gangster stories/ties. Generally MN isn't known for Italian food - but if there was one place I think of when it comes to a classic Italian vibe/menu it is DeGidios (or the place down the street - but it just doesn't have the same feel). My group all thought their orders were good. My dish - the Rigatoni with Porchetta meatballs was very tasty. The noodles were al dente and the meatballs had great flavor. As everyone who reads my reviews knows - I really love my spice - so sadly the "spicy" arrabbiata sauce really didn't pack much heat.
