I was so pleased with Deja Brew's takeout process during quarantine. It was easy to order by phone and it was all bagged up nicely when I got there, including a cup holder for the two coffees I ordered. The owner made sure I didn't have to touch a single thing when paying with my credit card and held the door open wide for me on my way out. Only almond milk available here as far as milk substitutes go, and I wouldn't really call what I received a "latte." There was no foam at all -- same lack of foam for my partner who ordered a whole milk cappuccino. The two orders looked the same, like plain coffee with milk. Plus, the coffee was weak and watery. I'm not sure if this is a busy day for Deja Brew or if this is how they roll, but it's packed in here! I ordered an iced medium latte. I was pleasantly surprised when my latte came directly to the table - I really dislike Starbucks' calling system which seems to confuse customers. Deja Brew's system is even more impressive considering the number of customers present. My latte was silky smooth, the way it should be. Espresso creama and coffee ice cubes have convinced me that this place really pays attention to details - love it! The food smelled really good, I plan to check it out on a slower day. I'm kind of a 'chill at the coffee shop' type of lady, so today this place wasn't my scene, that's the only reason they're getting 4/5 stars. I have no doubt I'll be back. This is a really cozy place to sit down after having a walk on 3rd and 4th street and just relax. Quaint little coffee shop around the University area. I had some time to kill on a business trip and figured some coffee and a sandwich would be a nice way to enjoy the cooler weather. I had a buffalo chicken sandwich (though I forget the name) and a large cute of coffee for less than $10. Bread on the sandwich was a good French type and the sauce had a nice kick. Ordered ice coffee. Instead of using the cold coffee they had in the fridge, they poured hot coffee over coffee ice cubes. The end result is luke warm coffee. Watched as someone ordered a sandwich and asked for lettuce. Younger employee grabbed lettuce with his bare hand after handling my credit card and other items and place the lettuce on the sandwich. So the Dalai Lama is in town and 'the Brew' creates a new drink called the 'Dalai Latte.' How can you not love such a place? Plus the drink -- a chai-based refresher billed as 'enlightening' -- is good. The newest drinK? Merrill's Mocha -- in honor of Merrill Reese's 32nd year as Eagles Broadcaster. (The Eagles training camp is next door at Lehigh U.) (BTW -- Merrill Reese: best legs in broadcasting!) Speaking of 'good,' the basic soup-salad-sandwich' fare of the Brew is so tasty and varied that I could eat lunch there eight days a week; I usually manage five. Favorites from the menu include the Mountain Hawk, a chicken parm-style sandwich on a Kaiser roll named for Lehigh University's mythical mascot;and the Vito Andolini (if 'The Godfather' is your I Ching, you'll know the reference), a salad that comes in either blond (fresh lemon and olive oil dressing) or noir (balsalmic vinagerette) forms. The blond Vito may be the perfect salad; I order it "kicked-up" to let Chef Jon know I'm up for one of his experiments with the fresh local produce and any fruit and spices he'd like to test-drive. Chef Jon understands food: he makes an eggplant sandwich that could make me renounce my status of omnivore and become a vegetarian; his experiments with creative combinations of all manner of savory items are a constant treat (click on DeJa Brew above and see some pictures).. The place is decorated with eclectic posters from independent films: owner Jeff is the Pres. of the local SouthSide Film Institute and the Brew is corporate headquarters for the yearly film festival (the SSFF). Chef Jon's art (including a Charlie Chaplin table and a square column adorned with the Fab Four) is both functional and decorative and is great fun to look at. Deja Brew is my favorite place in South Bethlehem. My daughter and I come here once or twice a week, usually snagging one of the ultra-comfy couches to have yummy sandwiches and hang out for hours. It's a true family place, as the owners and their son live upstairs, but more than this, each of the staff feels like friends who would hang here anyway. Many regulars come back again and again. It's a great cross-section of artistic and community-minded Bethlehem people, many whom help with the yearly film festival. I've had too many cool conversations here to count. The music is always wonderful, ranging from vintage punk to Beatles bass-only tracks. The staff play DJ for themselves constantly, and thankfully have a great taste in music. All in all, the place feels like the living room of a close friend, because of the comfy couches and cool stuff on the walls, because of the friendly staff, and because of the laid back atmosphere. Ifi had to choose one word to sum it up....it would be college. Its got the college kid feel. Pros: good prices, larger menu than most coffee shops, relaxed casual atmosphere, mix of couches and regular mix and match chairs and tables, good lighting, inviting for long stays, wifi, enough plugins to accomodate charging laptops, etc. $-$$ Cons: opens late/closes early for a coffee shop, definitely less intimate, staff is less personable than some cafes, strong college atmosphere (ties into the less personable comment), might not draw as much of the older 30 and up crowd as other places, parking is street parking and paid, couches are old.....like "college students picking up the free couch found on the sidewalk and placing onto their front porch" old. Not that i minded. Some might. Overall a great place to go for coffee and some eats, in a good setting. The paid parking is an added expense if you dont live locally and stay a while, but thats most cities and college towns for you-they like their meters. I personally don't like how the counter takes orders sitting on a chair looking up at you-most times they are reading books and I feel I'm annoying them when I walk up. They are polite, just very....relaxed. If you want great coffee and personable 'gets to know you' staff there are other options in the area that i feel offer better, but still a solid choice. read more

Came across this place when I was a student at Lehigh. Every time I pass through Bethlehem I stop by and get my favorite sandwich- the Andretti. I think this place is a gem because it's cozy, casual and simple. I brought my father here once while I was a student and he never stops talking about the Asa Packer sandwich. Even to this day, he still love the sandwich even after I have to transport on my 2 hour drive to New York. read more

The cafe is really cool inside with plenty of seating and lots of decoration--it's the kind of place I'd be happy to spend several hours relaxing in. The food was great: I ordered the Mountain Hawk sandwich (grilled chicken, ranch dressing, swiss cheese), and it was delicious. For $6, it came with a pickle and chips (which were really good). I love deja brew for its character. No two seats match, and the art painted on the walls by Jon is always fun to take in while sipping on a latte or eating a bethlehem steel sandwich. It is a great study spot, Incredibly cheap meal (no item really surpasses $8 or $9 dollars), and keeps me coming back time and time again. The clientele constantly changes, and they often help Lehigh student organizations with some some sort of profits going to a speciality coffee drink (ex. A % of the cherry bomb drinks go to the v day foundation during the vagina monologues). Don't expect a smile when you ask for a Frappuccino...this is a simpler style place, although they certainly can make speciality drinks if need be. read more

Hungry with no idea what to eat, the new Bethlehem resident that I was at the time decided to give this place a shot. What can I say, I am a sucker for puns, even ones that I have heard before. It got me through the door, so hey, I guess their (unintended) strategy to get customers like me into the door worked. Immediately when I walked through the door, I thought "man, I wish I still in college and had homework because this would be an awesome place to do it." Comfy seating, relaxed environment, perfect noise level. It felt like sitting in a slightly more cluttered version of home. I decided on the De'ja brew melt since I was in the mood for something warm. It was nice of the cashier to give me a heads up that it would likely be a slightly longer wait for my sandwich because there were several hot orders before mine and that their grill is relatively small. I sat down at a desk while I waited for my order (I didn't bother with a table since I was getting it to-go and there were a decent number of customers and didn't want to take a table away from someone who wanted to stay). The cashier was right, the order did take a little longer than expected, but when I got my order, it smelt so good. When I got back into my office and my John Oliver segment ready to enjoy during my lunch break, I decided to dig in. It was so melty and cheesy and good. The sandwich was a little soggy on the bottom, but that was a decent amount of time it sat in the box before I could eat it, so I'm not surprised. But minus the little sogginess, the rest of the sandwich was great. I would go back for another sandwich and give their hot drinks a try. read more

Outstanding place for lunch! Chef Jon has a gift for food. His salads and sandwiches are delicious. I am particularly fond of the "Katie," (not on the menu) which is thinly sliced breaded eggplant and cheese on a baguette. The accompanying chips are addictive. Salads are never my favorites unless they are exquisitely done. The Vito Andolini (noir) is spectacular, and it might actually inspire me to eat healthy! My grandson, age 14, picky eater extraordinaire, thinks Deja Brew might be the finest restaurant in the world, and demands to be taken there anytime he visits, each and every day. The restaurant decor, like its customers, is interesting and definitely NOT run-of-the-mill, Chef Jon's artwork is a delight, and the film posters always give you something to look at. A delicious, adorable little cafe, if not a tad bit overpriced (hence the 4 stars, although I would give four and a half if I could). It's almost worth coming here solely to have a look at the quirky decorations -- a chair shaped like a curved hand, murals of cartoon characters and all different music artists, abstract art hanging from the walls, and much more. It really is a gorgeous place. They even have nice cozy couches to sit at while you sip your coffee or eat your sandwich. As for the food, this is really as good as it gets when it comes to cafe food. I usually get one of their hoagies -- even the bread they put it on is something special, and they'll put pretty much whatever you want on it. I've been to Deja Brew a few times, so it's fair to say the attention to cleaning tables and particularly the floor is not adequate. The floor in particular needs cleaning and finishing. It looks like a barn floor. Wipe down the tables when people are done! It takes a few seconds. Dust the corners and the stuff on the wall. I'd get coffee there again but I won't order food at a place that doesn't look clean in the public areas. No way. read more
