The Dekalb County Airport offers the youth, EAA Young Eagles Program. https://www.vaa37.org/young_eagles.php The EAA Young Eagles program was launched in 1992 to give interested young people, ages 8 - 17, an opportunity to go flying in a general aviation aircraft. These flights are offered free of charge and are made possible through the generosity of EAA member volunteers. Since 1992, more than 2.1 million Young Eagles have taken flight! VAA Chapter 37 hosts a number of Young Eagles rallies each year. If you are unable to attend a rally, a Young Eagles flight that fits your schedule can be arranged. Please contact Young Eagles Coordinator Laramie Resler at 260-402-3478 or youngeagles@vaa37.org if you have any questions regarding the Young Eagles program. Each Young Eagles flight covers pre-flight, in-flight, and post-flight activities. Pre-flight: The pilot will explain what will happen during the flight. This might include talking about the aircraft; reviewing an aeronautical chart; completing a preflight inspection of the aircraft and identifying the parts that control the aircraft. The pilot will then help you buckle your seat belt and will describe the interior of the aircraft, including the instrument panel. In-flight: Once in the air, you'll see the earth and sky in a new and exciting way. The flight will last between 15 and 20 minutes and you may even get to take the controls! Post-flight: Once back on the ground, there will be additional time for you to ask questions about the flight. Ask away! The pilot will be happy to tell you more about flying. Each Young Eagle will receive a certificate and a logbook signed by the pilot. In addition, the Young Eagle is eligible for a number of other free benefits such as a student membership to EAA, access to Sporty's Learn To Fly online flight training course and more!

There is a little museum inside! Just a couple of exhibits and artifacts that tell the history of the Steuben County area, but still: When was the last time you saw exhibits in a rest stop? The restrooms were very clean, and there is lots of space to maneuver around if you use a wheelchair or have a stroller. There are a few vending machines with snacks and beverages (Pepsi and Coke products), and they even had cream soda! What?! I never see cream soda in a vending machine. There's also an ice cream vending machine, too. The outside has some grassy areas for pets to do their business, and a few places to walk them. If you need to stop and use the restroom, this is a great place to do so.

This is a neat little town, by the way, right on the verdant Canadian River. So I called the Canadian Chamber of Commerce and the nice lady told me about this place. "It's right on the northern edge of town" she said. As a woman travelling alone I am careful to stay only in state parks or commercial RV areas where the ranger/owner lives on site and there are other people around. About this place, I had an image of a remote, out-of-town public area on a highway in full view of any marauder or rapist who wanted to "get" me. I was so concerned about this one night of the trip that I even ordered a can of pepper spray. It turns out this place is quite nice. Yes it is in a public area but well back off of the main highway and tucked behind a rodeo arena. There are about 24 sites, all with electricity at least and most with water. There is a dump site next to the pay box, where you fill out an envelope and put in $10 cash. All sites are shaded. This is a very pleasant area along the Canadian River bottoms and is a model of what a town should do with a public area with naturally occurring trees and habitat. I saw plenty of deer scat during my walks with Cello. There is a high school sports arena nearby, a recreational area with a lake, some sheds with "city equipment" like mowers, a water storage tank, and the rodeo complex. You don't have to park too close to that (because of flies) but even from here (site #17) I can see the horses in the distance and hear their neighing. There is some kind of event tonight and I can hear an announcer in the distance. There are a few people around and I don't feel too concerned. Out of 24 sites, about a third are occupied. Uphill from me are residential areas that look fairly respectable. There are plenty of places to walk without much traffic, around the rodeo arena and the roads leading to the other facilities. It doesn't feel crowded and the trees along the river are within sight. The city has also planted plenty of Chinese elms along the drives. I like it here. Hemphill County has done the right thing with the whole area, and with the RV sites.

The cabin comes fully stocked with pretty much everything you need to bring other than yourself. Being right on the lake provides such a serene and peaceful setting it is hard not to get lost in the beauty and relax with those around you. The overall style and decorating of the cabin was very warm and comfortable! It was also not to hard to find. Much credit to Klare and her hospitality and service on providing a flexible and enjoyable stay.

The pond is overstocked and the fish are starving but she is worried about people catching fish. She threatens to have kids do barn duty if they mess with her animals. Not so calm and serene when the owner is obsessed with your every move on her property when you rent the cabin. I stayed at this cabin and it was infested with mice and had to leave a night early. I left Klare a note telling her we had been run out by the mice and she never called to apologize or clear things up. She has horrible customer service skills and doesn't belong running a business. She even communicated to a friend of mine that I had extra guests the night I left and didn't want her coming over to the cabin. That is very unprofessional of her to speak lies about customers who were ran off by her mice infestation. What a bad experience. I am an adult and don't need to be babysat by other adults. The staff was amazing kind and attentive! The campers and the seasonal campers were so friendly! They have a very unique style of camping at first we didn't want to try camping at a place we couldn't make a reservation and know we were guaranteed a camping site! The place was packed, but there always seemed to be room for more! They had activities live band, kids crafts, bingo and so many things the staff are involved and they have security at night and it made us feel good knowing they were so attentive to everyone's needs! Family perfect campground! Wish we lived closer so we could visit more! We love Gordons Campground!!
