It has been a fixture in Avilla since 1948 when it started as a hotel. St. James has a long tradition of serving northeast Indiana patrons (groups, families or friends) food and drinks from this historical structure. The building is large and dominates the block. It is in good repair but rather plain in appearance. There is plenty of parking out back. Once you find the entry door you have to navigate a series of hallways to the attractive bar and hostess area. The building has lots of walls that reflect the hotel structure. The back of the restaurant has a large open and plain looking dinning area. Everyone here is very friendly. They are good and simple people. They seem to seek to serve you and make you happy. There isn't much fancy about St. James. Just a good ole relaxing and home feel atmosphere. The menu is big. There is something for everyone. Prices are fair and portion sizes are decent. Here is a rundown on the items we ordered: -Strawberry pie: it's seasonal and popular. Reserve your piece when ordering dinner - if they still have it. The berries were sweet and fresh. The filling is homemade, nice berry flavor, not over the top sweet. Crust is flaky, tender and delicious. -Onion rings: we got about 6 medium sized rings for $7 on the appetizer menu. Each piece was uniquely made. Some were really thin and crispy. Others had a really thick/tender piece of onion with a thicker batter. Overall nice taste, not too oily. The ranch sauce was very thin and short on ranch flavor -Side salad: nice smaller salad with fresh ingredients. Plenty of side veggies and cheese. The croutons were tough. Garlicky and very crispy. The Smokey Bit dressing was outstanding. Kind of a blend of a southwestern chipotle sauce with a strong smoke flavor! -Crab cakes: my wife really liked the thinner cake. This allowed the cake to be heated throughout and more crispy surface areas. She liked the stronger crab meat taste. -Oven baked BBQ ribs: very tender and meaty rib. The BBQ sauce had a mild BBQ flavor with no spicy kick. The meat could be flaked off the bone with a fork. No Smokey or grilled flavors. We purchased 2 Dixie Sternwheeler tickets for $14 TOTAL on Sunday, July 7, 2024 just before the…read more8:00 p.m. trip. The young woman selling the tickets never indicated the Dixie would not be running that night. We learned from others that the Dixie was down, had only made the 2:00 p.m. Sunday trip, and needed repairs. This girl knew the Dixie was not running and sold us tickets for a ride she knew was not happening on Sunday. She told us to return the following day for a ride. On Monday we were told the Dixie was still not repaired just before the ride was to sail. A man was now selling tickets to people and not telling them the Dixie would not be moving either. When anyone objects they are told, "We don't give refunds." Then WHY are you selling tickets for trips that do not exist? We were told to return Tuesday. This time the young woman was selling tickets to customers and not telling them there would be no rides on Tuesday as the Dixie was still down. Frankly, this is fraud selling tickets to ride a sternwheeler that is not working and then refusing to refund consumers' money. We will not be returning to North Webster so our tickets are worthless. The young woman still wanted to sell me another set of tickets Tuesday night until I told her, "You know full-well that boat is not going anywhere." She muttered, "Oh, I forgot." Apparently, it is their job to sell tickets to anyone walking through the door while knowing the boat won't be running. Tell me what you would call this--a scam, fraud, theft? Do not purchase tickets until you see people walking onto the Dixie because you will be losing your money if the ship needs repairs, unless you happen to live in the immediate area of the Dixie. Refunds should be mandatory when the ship is broken and cannot be repaired for days. The sternwheeler was still not running on Wednesday, July 10 yet tickets were being sold to "Ride the Dixie" on that day too. Hmmmmm! I guess they think we are all "suckers" because they stick us with tickets and keep the money.

Amidst all these, though, Gunthorp Farms stands out as the best place in this part of the state for responsibly raised, delicious meat. They sell wonderful pork, chicken, rabbit, and duck at their store, which is located right on the farm, which is also home to their own USDA-inspected processing facility. Gunthorp mostly sells to upper end restaurants around the Midwest, though, and retail sales are not a top priority. Fridays and Saturdays (check their website for hours -- they're not conventional) they sell what are basically the scraps that the restaurants won't take. This is still great meat at a great price, though. Go for the pork loin ends (real tenderloin, just awkwardly cut). If you want a whole bird, rabbit, etc. call a week ahead and order. However, the only reason I'm not giving Gunthorp five stars is that the first time I did this they forgot to do the chickens I ordered. As above, retail sales are not really their big priority, so I just wouldn't make any big plans dependent on what you're getting. They did have "freshly frozen" chickens available (frozen after two days rather than the two weeks factory farms often give them). Finally, I would be remiss not to mention that Gunthorp sells rendered duck fat for the unbelievable price of $20/gallon. Buy some Yukon Golds and make the best fries you've ever tasted!

I did 3 of them at different times on the, grill beer-can style, using only salt, pepper and garlic as a rub and a smoking tube with apple wood pellets at 300F. They came out nicely browned on the outside and nothing but rich juicy meat on the inside. I generally do not favor the white meat of factory chickens because it has so little flavor. Not these - perfect on its own or in a salad of greens. And the DARK meat of these chickens - oh my! Rich and flavorful but not gamey. We baked the other chickens stuffed with two lemons and a rub under the skin of butter, garlic, salt and a little rosemary. The price of these chickens is not what you'll find at the grocery store and especially not in LaGrange IN, but they are WELL worth the premium if you appreciate fine meats and poultry and livestock that is raised sustainably and responsibly. If Gunthorp Farms offers this product for retail purchase in the future we will likely be back!

I phoned around and got a few quotes for a 6 foot, wood privacy fence. I almost went with Mike's -…read moreeven though I wasn't really thrilled about their customer service at the office end - which took forever to get the quote to me and then another forever to fix the name on the quote. Mike's also mentioned a "small job fee" - small job meaning our 190 feet of privacy fencing. In the end it was a good thing they dawdled and couldn't start for another month, because it gave Double R a chance to come quote the fence; which included more and cost less! They were recommended by a friend who knew the owner, Marion, and that he had taken over his father's Amish origin family business. This is a company that doesn't know how to do a bad job - and they take care of everything along the way. I didn't have time to clear a fence line, which Mike's required, but Marion at Double R took care of it for us. In the end, we had a fence that was flush and didn't look pieced together like those built using panels. We are beyond happy with the new fence! If you just want a fence, call a fencing company and they'll put up panels for you. If you want quality, hand set fencing that looks great, call Marion at Double R.
