When my insurance changed I reluctantly had to move to another dentist. However, Dr. Charlston is still the only dentist I fully trust, so I've opted to occasionally come back to him and pay out of pocket (especially as I wasn't overly confident in my new dentist). Dr. Charlston gives a competent, honest assessment every time, doesn't ever criticize work done by another dentist and as I'm paying out of pocket, he keeps the bills very small/reasonable. He's not the 'salesy' dentist which seems to be predominant now. He gets on with it and I'm in and out of the office fast, every time. I like Dr. Charlton as he seems to be honest and not creating extra dental work to charge you and your insurance for his own benefits. If he sees you are not interested in extra luxury work he won't push it on you. But the front office requires a lot of follow ups and does not explain the charges on your account up front. For example my cleaning and exam should have been fully covered as I have two dental insurances but not having explained the procedure I ended up having to pay out of pocket for an image that I am still not sure why I was charged for while my insurances cover cleaning and exam (2x exam/year with one and 1X exam/year with the other). I also have to send several follow ups to get an answer regarding my questions. read more

Based on my experience, I cannot recommend this practice. unresolved issues: Invisalign trays I paid $5,000+ for were discarded without consent, repeated billing errors including fraudulent charges attributed to staff, treatment records requests ignored despite California law requirements, and a procedure that caused temporary nerve injury. After several years of going from dentist to dentist in search of a good one, I was referred to Dr. Charlton and his fabulous team. Visiting the dentist was always at the top of my list of things I really would rather not do. I had recurring problems with a couple of teeth and after previous dentists would fix them, the problem would either reappear within a year or two or a different problem would arise from the treatment. Dr. Charlton fixed my problematic teeth and after seven years I still have not had any trouble with them. Chiola (dental hygienist) takes great care of my teeth as well. I'm not sure it will ever completely go away, but my fear of visiting the dentist has greatly subsided. I'm a happy customer! read more

14 (ish?) years later, I finally have to bid adieu to Del Mar View Dental care because I'm moving. I literally teared up as I was thanking Dr Charlton. In all those years, I have never received anything but the kindest, most helpful attention around the exam, cleaning, scheduling, billing, insurance or random questions. Megan is a rockstar. She (and more recently, other team members) is proactive in scheduling - they reached out to me when our cleanings were due and we didn't have an appointment on the books. I've had complicated personal and insurance issues come up and Megan always just handles it. I can email them rather than needing to call. It's just always super convenient and easy, which means a lot to me. The office atmosphere is always super calming. They are so careful to make sure that the waiting rooms are clean and that you are comfortable. In the chair, they ALSO want you to feel good. I have to be one of the most difficult dental patients, hands down in that I'm nervous about dental work because of past experiences, and I have a long list of conditions that make working on me just 'extra'. They always know the tiniest detail about what I need when I get there and are so careful with me. I've never left in pain from their work. Even after fillings! In addition to my own care, I took my son here from his very first dentist appointment. His dental experience has largely only been with Del Mar View Dental so he has never had a bad experience and is very positive about dentists, in general, which is a very different experience than I had as a kid. It means the world to me that he has had such a great dental experience. All of the hygienists are wonderful but I have to admit, when my jaw is pried open, I'm not the most chatty so I haven't gotten to know them all. Chiola, however, is a wonderful hygienist. So thoughtful and caring, and does an amazing job. She somehow remembers me and my son and keeps up with what's going on. She's taken such good care of my son's teeth, even when he wasn't so great taking care of them, as kids do. I've had cavities filled here and my son has had a (front) tooth repaired here. Dr Charlton does really great work and is so super knowledgeable and careful to quote the right thing and give options where they are available. I have trigeminal neuralgia, which, at the onset, often mimics a rotten root and results in unnecessary root canals. I went right into the office when my 'tooth' started hurting and Dr Charlton was so careful about excluding any possibility of a tooth problem, which helped me get diagnosed quickly. Here and there when we switched insurance, we had to go to other dentists. We always came back and there is no comparison. I just cannot say enough about Del Mar View Dental. Weirdly, I could tell so many stories of times they just absolutely rocked. I'm not sure I ever thought I'd have such a lasting, great relationship with a dental office. I will miss them! I have had a lot of dental work done in the past and as a result have PTSD when it comes to dentists. I found Dr. Charlton over 10 years ago (he was recommended by my former dentist's hygienist). I came in for veneers and stayed. Having veneers was such a great investment since your smile is important! Dr. Charlton made sure I was comfortable during the process. They look natural and a good smile is so important! His whole office is wonderful, kind and caring. Chiola has been cleaning my teeth for years. Called with a dental emergency - broken tooth and extreme pain. They graciously fit me in the next day. took X-rays and a CT scan charged $400 and told me they don't do broken teeth extractions. Everyone was very nice, knowledgeable -- Disappointing they didn't share that they don't take care of my issue. I did receive a prescription to handle the abscess. read more

I would like to tell you about my recent attempt to make an appointment with you as a new patient. I had some issues with my teeth and my dentist said that I could get a second opinion which is why I did some research and picked you as someone near me to get an exam and another opinion. I contacted your office and had a conversation with Diana. She wanted some information from me. I gave here my insurance information but she also said I needed to fill out the "New Patient" forms. I asked her if I could fill out the forms when I came to the appointment a few minutes earlier. She made me an appointment for 4/26/21 and she then said I should come to the office and pick up the forms before my appointment or go on-line to complete them. I chose to do it on-line and I completed and submitted them promptly. A few days before the appointment she called me and said that there was a page missing. I told her that I would complete that page when I came for my appointment or we could have completed that one page quickly over the phone. (There was difficulty using your web site and possibly that caused a problem.) She said that I needed to resubmit the entire form OR ELESE she would cancel the appointment (This after waiting several weeks with pain). She also claimed that she did not receive the X-Ray that I emailed her on 4/13/21 at 11:09AM. But my email "Sent Items" confirmed that she did receive it. Her hostile, controlling and insistent manner was both threatening and disappointing. I hope that it was not because of my foreign accent. SHE DID CANCEL me after I waited those several weeks. When I called back several times to talk to your office manager, my phone number had apparently been blocked and was immediately cut off. Your office assistants represent you. Your web site told me that you were accepting new patients, but the interaction with your staff told me just the opposite. There was no serious effort to encourage me to follow on and come to the appointment. I am sure we could have corrected any small details at that time. Being treated like a second-class citizen is not what I expected. I am sure that you would not condone that kind of patient treatment. Fortunately, I found another doctor whose staff will treat me with some respect and has an easier application process. Dr C has been our dentist since 2006. He is outstanding. I have only ever had cleanings and check-ups; unlike so many dentists, he doesn't try to sell you unnecessary procedures. My husband has great oral hygiene, but genetically poor teeth. He's had crowns, root canals, extractions...you name it! And he also loves Dr C! I have gone to Del Mar View Dental Care since about 2002, off and on, had to switch to other dentists when our dental plans changed. My last visit was a few months ago and I really did not want to review them, but I am very very disappointed with my last treatment, which was a root canal and a crown. The root canal was performed by an endodontist in his office and went fine. The crown however, did not fit well and when I went back for an adjustment, they charged me $50, which I think should be a part of the original fee I was charged, they should not charge for correction of the work they did. My crown still bothers me but I will not go back to them. The office staff is not the same, and I am extremely dissatisfied with my dental work, and when I called they were very uncaring. read more

I have been going to this dentist for 10 years - I was an extremely fearful patient when I arrived but since then I have become very successful in managing my dental hygiene and I am no longer afraid of going to a dentist. My children have been seeing this dentist since they were 2 and they love going, which I really attribute to the calm and soothing atmosphere they create in the office. The staff are all amazing and Dr Charlton is wonderful. Unfortunately, I will be moving my entire family to a new dentist who is truly in-network because Del Mar Dental View did not honor our in-network medical insurance rate for my husbands wisdom teeth removal and instead are charging us the higher dentist fee submitted. Their excuse is that the oral surgeon they hire to remove wisdom teeth is out-of-network and so it's really our own fault for not making sure that we knew what the exact cost of this procedure would be ahead of time. NOTE: Dr. Charlton does not perform the wisdom teeth extraction himself, so make sure his hired oral surgeon is in your network. The operation was a huge success and I highly recommend having your wisdom teeth removed here. This is a great dentist if you are one of the wealthy few who can afford to pay the amounts not covered by your Medical Insurance, but after 10 years I realized that we just don't earn enough money to be their patients any longer. PS. Chiola is the best Dental Hygienist, definitely schedule with her if you are lucky enough to find an opening in her calendar. read more

My wife went in for a cleaning. That was fine. Unfortunately, the skill of the dentist was, in our case, overshadowed by indifferent office practices. The business side left us a bit upset. After finding a dentist's office on her insurance company's website, my wife called the office at that location (Del Mar View Dental Care) and made an appointment. Admittedly, my wife looked up the wrong suite at the same street address, which led to her going to the dentist's office across the hall from the office covered by her insurer (Del Mar Professional Dental Group). Upon arriving at Del Mar View Dental Care, my wife filled out the normal paperwork, informed them that she had insurance through her insurance company, and handed over her card when asked by the receptionist. We have since found out that Del Mar View does not accept that insurance, but they did not tell my wife this information at the time, despite asking her for and receiving her insurance information. Had they done so, my wife would have realized the error and made alternate plans. We only found out about this issue when we received a bill three months later. They waived the late fee, which was nice, but it still would have been nice to know that they didn't accept our insurance. It wouldn't have taken much for the receptionist to at least ask my wife if she knew that the office didn't accept our plan. We do have insurance, but unfortunately we're paying out of pocket because this individual didn't put two and two together. Today the person on the phone told us that it's ultimately up to the patient to make sure they're covered. Very true. Make sure you check for yourself. read more

I went to this place for far too long and it was awful! The staff is rude and take forever to get you in for a cleaning, even when you make an appointment. I once waited 45 minutes! I had an appointment and there was only one other patient in the office. Don't know why in the world it took so long and when I asked why, I got a mean and condescending answer. My teeth hurt so badly every time I left and I brush, floss, and mouth wash every day. Also, when I was younger, I had a cavity and the dentist assured it was an adult tooth so it will not fall out. Therefore, I paid extra to have the cavity filled with white instead of gold. The same tooth fell out ONE MONTH LATER. DO NOT GO HERE!! I switched to Del Mar Family Dentistry on Via de la Valle years ago and am so much happier! You should too. read more

I am so glad my sister recommended Dr Charlton to me. He and his staff are skilled, friendly and truly care. Dr Charlton explains what he will be doing, always answers my questions and is efficient but not rushed. He recently did a partial crown on my tooth. Because he talked me through the process and numbed my mouth well, the process felt routine and did not hurt. When I had some gum inflammation after the partial crown, Dr Charlton got me in quickly, addressed the inflammation and did a one recheck to make sure everything was healing. Both of these recheck visits were considered part of the first visit so there were no additional charges. I highly recommend Dr Charlton. He is an excellent dentist who wants the best for people and their mouths. read more

Had bad problems with them submitting claims to insurance, they were dismissive and don't care and tell you, that you are responsible even if they don't submit it properly or timely. Stating that we submit claims as a "courtesy". Dr. Charlton did not do the work that he billed for. A comprehensive exam should take more than a few minutes. On the positive side the teeth cleaner did a decent job but tried to up sell me with that lame fluoride treatment, that to me is a scam, for like $40. It was my first and last time there. read more

I have gone to the same dentist for 30+ years... I don't want to disclose my age but that's a long time! When I moved to SD from LA in 2009, I would even drive up frequently for visits because I'm that paranoid and into my teeth and mouth health. It was worth it at the time and I credit good dental work for no cavities and excellent teeth to my old dentist. Until, his office started erroneously charging me, didn't return calls, etc... I finally decided to make the switch to a San Diego dentist. Now... to Del Mar View Dental. Since I have seen Dr. Charlton, I refuse to go back to LA to my childhood dentist. I'm such a loyal dental person I will drive miles... I would do the same for Dr. Charlton if I moved back to LA. I have found a dentist who takes pride in his work & loves his patients. I was a client for many years. Got fed up when they insist on X-rays every 2 years and refuse to do a cleaning if you prefer not to have X-rays that often. I called ca dept of dentistry and even they don't recommend X-rays that often. This was a few years back when I got layed off and lost my insurance. So the X-rays out of pocket were more than I could afford. I explained that to them and they didn't care. So it was clear their only motivation is money and not taking care of clients' teeth. They also would start asking you to sign legal papers while sitting in dentist chair during exams. Very unprofessional and the "contracts" were typed from 50 years ago and contained very questionable language. Found a much better dentist in La Jolla and am so much happier to feel like a respected client. read more

Where do I start! I have been going to see Dr Charlton and his staff for around 6 years. I have never felt this office uncaring. They all care about you and the well being of your teeth especially. Does not have a clue what to do with dental insurance and loves to send people to collection agencies. She is out of line and very aggressive--no people skills. I've been to tons of dentist. He would rank right in the middle. His helpers have about 3 days of experience, try getting gagged with a vacuum. He likes to tell you about the procedure and all the steps he's doing and how he learned them at UCLA training. I really didn't care. Dr. Charlton and Del Mar view are fantastic! I was a little hesitant in finding a new dentist in SD, because all my colleagues at work complained about their dentists. After a lot of searching for one that worked with my insurance, I finally found Dr. Charlton's practice. First of all, the hygienists are great. Very gentle, very nice. You can also get DVD goggles while they work. They also have all the latest in gear for cleaning. They have some of the latest and greatest sonic scalers and not only does it work quick, but are so much more gentle that the older style ones or manual scraping. They also have a great computer system for monitoring you dental health and past procedures. The hygienist can quickly look at your past work and make sure it is intact and forward any concerns to Dr. Charlton. The other nice thing about this practice is that they don't upsell you. They don't ask about any cosmetic procedures, but are happy to answer questions if you have them. The group practice I previously went to, was always trying to get you to try this or that procedure that you "absolutely needed" even though your insurance didn't cover it. None of the BS at Del Mar view, just solid dentistry. They are also open late in the evening which is perfect for my schedule and they are very good about appointment reminders. Dr. Charlton did put in one new filling for me, which I knew I needed. Not only was he fast, but he did a significantly better job than some of the work I had done on my group plan when I was in graduate school. The bite fit was spot on and I can't even tell the filling is there. All and all I cannot say enough good things about Dr. Charlton and his practice. read more

Last year I had a broken molar fixed in Del Mar View Dental by Dr. Charlton and a few days ago just fell off. I paid the extra money they asked me for a fixing that was going to last 20 years but it didn't even last a year. The worst part is that now their office is charging my insurance again for the same thing and I even have to pay part of it for a job that should've been done well since the first time. I'm waiting response from the Insurance Coordinator but I'm so disappointed for getting double charged and for going through the same painful procedure twice in less than a year, I just hope it doesn't fall again, I just couldn't stand another "patch up" work that last less than what it's supposed to. read more

Dr Charlton is the best! I have seen him for a few years now. However I decided to get a Groupon for my teeth to be cleaned since it was super cheap. At that same time I began grinding my teeth. So this doctor in clairmont told me I was wrecking my teeth and I needed $2500 in repair to also fix the fillings. He had all this high tech equipment to "show" me my damage. And then said we can take payment right now. So I decided to see Dr Charlton for new x-rays so he could compare them to my old ones. Dr Charlton said my teeth looked great and no work was needed. However a night guard would be helpful. So many dentists are such scammers out there. I appreciate Dr Charlton's honesty and not trying to make a money off me. Dr Charlton's office takes care of my family since some 10 years. Cleaning, whitening, fillings, crowns, straightening, root canals, everything is done with the most modern technology and with great care. He loves his job and that shows. His staff is friendly and his daily operation flawless. He will rather say "we'll keep an eye on it" than doing something that is not absolutely necessary. STAY AWAY AT ALL COSTS! THEY ARE SCAMMERS! I had a crack in my crown so I went to this dentist to have it replaced. Prior to replacing it I specifically requested the office for a breakdown of the costs to see if I could afford the work. I was informed the repair would be covered by my insurance and my responsibility was minimal, less than $100 so I agreed to proceed. I even signed a document agreeing to these terms. A month later I recieved a bill for nearly $500 saying my insurance will not cover the replacement. When I called Del Mar View Dental to remind them what they quoted me and the fact that I signed a document indicating the same they stated "it isn't our fault your insurance won't cover the crown." At the time of the repair I was informed by Del Mar View they called my insurance to confirm the tooth was covered but now they're claiming they didn't call and it was my responsibility to call the insurance. They lied to my face on the day the tooth was to be repaired just so I'd sign the document and get the work done. Then a month later when I was billed $500 for the tooth they informed me that the fine print on the document I signed says this quote is an estimate and they are not responsible if the insurance doesn't cover the work. THEY LIE TO YOUR FACE TO GET YOU TO DO THE WORK THEN WHEN YOU'RE BILLED THEIR OVER ABSORBITANT PRICES THEY CLAIM "WELL YOU SHOULD HAVE READ THE FINE PRINT." THEY ARE SCAMMERS TAKING ADVANTAGE OF THEIR PATIENTS, STAY FAR, FAR AWAY!!! read more
