Used to be the place to go to find staples like properly drab work uniforms. Was there right when the stores looked to open, having just visited the Del Monte version of the Monterey Farmers Market. The Apple store had its share of folks waiting outside and everything else looked very quiet. It's an outdoor venue with pleasant decorations. Pretty sure Amazon is taking this place down though, if COVID hasn't already done so. Great place to stretch your legs out if you are tired of that ocean thing and need some retail therapy. Also has a Tesla Supercharging station. Cheaper to charge at home, as is the case everywhere unless you scored free supercharging early on with your ride.

I've always loved this outdoor mall. They have a security guard who walks around. During holidays they decorate and have Santa available for pictures and Halloween most stores hand out candy to children. Stores close early on Sunday with Macys staying open later. There are plenty of shopping stores such as H&M, bath & body works, Express and plenty others. They also have some options for food such as California pizza kitchen, pretzels and Starbucks. Whole Foods is right across the parking lot. Very close to highway access. We will return.

This shopping center has a lot of different kinds of stores. All the stores that I did go into, everyone was nice. There's also food restaurant there. Outside of the shopping center was a Whole Foods grocery store and a Petco.

Decent Shopping Center! Smallish compared to other shopping centers you have probably been to. Lululemon, Apple, Macys, AMC, and others are some highlight stores they have. Being outdoor that is pretty cool. Can not imagine this shopping center ever getting super crowded, but I am sure it has its days since it is the only real shopping center in the area. Worth a trip!

This is suchba clean and gorgeous plaza with little shops to check out! There's extensive superchargers available too.

Knowing that this outdoor shopping center was 3 stories and had over 30 stores, I expected the area around it to be like a city center, with heavy foot and car traffic, lots of noise, and business advertisement. Instead, I wasn't sure if we were in the right place, because the neighborhood looked residential. The city planners/architects did a really nice job to implement this intention. The shopping center first opened in 1960, as an open-air courtyard style with a luxury department store, unheard of at the time for a town that small. Throughout the years, it hosted a major department store chain (Saks Fifth Avenue) as well. Now, in keeping with Carmel's intention to not have any national brand retail in it's city limits, the majority of stores/restaurants at this mall are local (though there are exceptions like Tiffany & Co, Anthropologie, and Brunello Cuccinelli). We got lucky and found free street a block from the center. Even on a Monday late morning, it was quite busy with tourists and locals alike hanging out in the main courtyard. A really nice feature was the large outdoor gas firepit that people were using to keep warm. We had come for a particular restaurant, but were informed that they were closed for the day for a private event (no signs or mention on their website)...I guess that's how this particular business rolls.

A mix of various shops, tourist gift sellers, restaurants, hotels, and eateries (ice cream shops, delis, and bakeries). On one end, you'll find the aquarium. The other way, you'll reach the Monterey Plaza Hotel and San Carlos Beach. I mainly walked this my 1st evening here on a Thursday and it was on the quiet side (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&start=264&select=zeTCcVncpby2ciMVUrkz6Q). When I returned Saturday afternoon, the streets were filled but not overwhelming so since there were no major events on this weekend (auto show previous weekend and the Monterey Jazz Festival two weekends later). The weather was comfortable with a cool ocean breeze. It's probably best to prepare your activities somewhere along here after you visit the aquarium if that's on your schedule. Upon approach, it may seem that there isn't all that much to it, but once you're on the boardwalk, you realize that a lot of the good stuff is tucked away, a little out of sight, so exploration rewards the traveler. Apparently the aquarium here is also quite the draw, although we didn't pop in during our brief stay here. She quickly learned about places that locals love when the tourists aren't out in force. It was really helpful to learn from her insider knowledge during trips to visit her. When I used to live in the Bay Area, Carmel jaunts were more frequent. Now that I reside in SoCal, it's not someplace we get to visit that often. As such, it was a treat to get a chance to get back to The Barnyard recently. Our pal suggested meeting at From Scratch for breakfast. She relies on their food, and the location in The Barnyard is an added plus. Parking is free, and there's a reasonable amount of it. Now that I'm older and my knees not as flexible or forgiving as they used to be, I became aware that the many undulating levels and staircases throughout the property add visual interest, but mobility challenges. We entered from the north and it took a bit of navigating to find the restaurant. As we didn't want to be late meeting our friend, we didn't fully take in all there was to see about the unique architecture and many flower beds and other landscaping features of the shopping center. We were there on a Monday morning and it didn't seem like a lot of the shops were open yet at 10:30 a.m. It was definitely on the quiet side at that day and time. I did note a few upscale boutiques for clothing and home decor. If the weather had been nicer, and more time free for shopping / browsing it would have been great to wander around after breakfast. I did love seeing the large rows of Pride of Madeira flower bushes on the perimeter of the property. They show off well in this center where many lovely flowers call home in a unique setting.

It's a shame because there are so few good stores in this area. I went to all of them today and didn't find one that was a strong comic book store. If you like certain collectibles, you'll find a lot here, but if you're looking for comic books (which this store is listed) then you might be disappointed. SELECTION: Definitely packed full of product but I find that these types of stores in the end don't do well because product that doesn't sell sits on the shelves so long they gather dust. Not focused enough. And the comic wall isn't well stocked. SERVICE: Helpful in explaining why there isn't a lot in stock but too bad because this place has lots of potential. In a waning market this is the most well positioned store to do well. If they only did an ordering service, it would likely solve some of their problems. COST: Reasonable but not exceptional. Instead of going the collectibles route (I would definitely have collectibles but not the fad kind), I would go the comic book / gaming / sports card route. Comics were not sorted alphabetically on the shelves, older guy sitting behind the counter made it clear he did not want to be bothered, and some of the merchandise was WAY TOO expensive. I understand he has a shop in the Del Monte Shopping Center so renting the space can be pricey, but $30 for a "normal" Funko Pop that isn't a Chase, or special edition, is just plain ridiculous. Hot Topic on the other side of the shopping center had the exact same Funko Pop for $11.90 My partner found a cool Batman graphic novel, but by that point I felt like I was gonna be sick due to the mold smell, so I had to leave.
