She quickly learned about places that locals love when the tourists aren't out in force. It was really helpful to learn from her insider knowledge during trips to visit her. When I used to live in the Bay Area, Carmel jaunts were more frequent. Now that I reside in SoCal, it's not someplace we get to visit that often. As such, it was a treat to get a chance to get back to The Barnyard recently. Our pal suggested meeting at From Scratch for breakfast. She relies on their food, and the location in The Barnyard is an added plus. Parking is free, and there's a reasonable amount of it. Now that I'm older and my knees not as flexible or forgiving as they used to be, I became aware that the many undulating levels and staircases throughout the property add visual interest, but mobility challenges. We entered from the north and it took a bit of navigating to find the restaurant. As we didn't want to be late meeting our friend, we didn't fully take in all there was to see about the unique architecture and many flower beds and other landscaping features of the shopping center. We were there on a Monday morning and it didn't seem like a lot of the shops were open yet at 10:30 a.m. It was definitely on the quiet side at that day and time. I did note a few upscale boutiques for clothing and home decor. If the weather had been nicer, and more time free for shopping / browsing it would have been great to wander around after breakfast. I did love seeing the large rows of Pride of Madeira flower bushes on the perimeter of the property. They show off well in this center where many lovely flowers call home in a unique setting.

It's a shame because there are so few good stores in this area. I went to all of them today and didn't find one that was a strong comic book store. If you like certain collectibles, you'll find a lot here, but if you're looking for comic books (which this store is listed) then you might be disappointed. SELECTION: Definitely packed full of product but I find that these types of stores in the end don't do well because product that doesn't sell sits on the shelves so long they gather dust. Not focused enough. And the comic wall isn't well stocked. SERVICE: Helpful in explaining why there isn't a lot in stock but too bad because this place has lots of potential. In a waning market this is the most well positioned store to do well. If they only did an ordering service, it would likely solve some of their problems. COST: Reasonable but not exceptional. Instead of going the collectibles route (I would definitely have collectibles but not the fad kind), I would go the comic book / gaming / sports card route. Card collectibles are of high value and take up so very little space. Funkos are great, but to give them shelf space they aren't worth it.

Owner definitely has an issue that needs to be resolved immediately. As for the contents of the store, it sadly left a lot to be desired. Comics were not sorted alphabetically on the shelves, older guy sitting behind the counter made it clear he did not want to be bothered, and some of the merchandise was WAY TOO expensive. I understand he has a shop in the Del Monte Shopping Center so renting the space can be pricey, but $30 for a "normal" Funko Pop that isn't a Chase, or special edition, is just plain ridiculous. Hot Topic on the other side of the shopping center had the exact same Funko Pop for $11.90 My partner found a cool Batman graphic novel, but by that point I felt like I was gonna be sick due to the mold smell, so I had to leave. I hope the owner can get their priorities straight, and take care of the store before someone does get sick.

Prices were on the higher side, which isn't surprising for the area, but it was still fun to browse. A bit disappointing that several stores were closed during my visit, so it felt quieter than expected. He was wearing all black so I didn't know who the person was or why he was doing that and I didn't confront him. He then walked away. Imagine you pull into a public parking lot open to the public, run in to Safeway and get coffee and a donut and sit in your car to read emails while you have your morning snack and along comes a guy in all black who starts placing cones around your car. I waited until he was gone and I got out to move them so I could leave and out of no where he comes running up saying 'I'll do that!' Looking back on it all I was parked at the end of a row of spaces so he could have coned off all the spaces except mine and none of this confrontation would happen. Anyway while he moves the cones he asks if I work there. What the heck? You're in all black placing cones around cars early in the morning and then asking people if they work for Safeway? I ask him if he works there because he is the one placing cones around cars. I called the management to complain and got an actual human being on the third call. So grateful for that! That's excellent customer service. Expressed my concern and then found the guy again later who now had on a high vis vest on and driving an official crossroad vehicle. When I asked him for his name (Mike) he asked for mine. Seemed a bit confrontational when I told him I wasn't giving my name. I'm the customer who was trying to use services provided by the crossroads shopping center being treated poorly by untrained staff with a police ego, bad form crossroads. Do better. Stop confronting customers after hours in the dark while wearing all black.

I was mostly interested in the purses, as usual, and spent most of the time I was there checking them out. They have two large bookcases stuffed with bags, plus there are more spread around the store. Some of the designers are Prada, Coach, Kate Spade, Michael Kors, Vera Bradley, Marc Jacobs, and more. I was helped by the most wonderful sales associate named Wendy. She was so friendly and kind that she made it a joy to shop there. I ended up buying a pink boho scarf that was on sale for 50% off. The price tags have three different prices listed on them, and the system is not clearly explained. The owner mentioned it very briefly, and from what I gathered, the bottom price (the cheapest number) was the final price. Based on that understanding, I selected my items. When I went to check out, the total she gave me seemed unusually high. After reviewing the receipt, I noticed several items didn't align with the prices I believed were indicated on the tags, which she cut off. I went back to the counter simply asking for clarification. Instead of calmly explaining, the owner became very hostile. She told me she "didn't have time for this" and said my questions were going to "mess everything up." She then pulled me outside of the store and spoke to me as if I were a delinquent or a child being scolded, which was completely inappropriate and humiliating. She even said, "It may be harder for you to understand," which was insulting and condescending. She went on to say that giving me a refund would be a, "shit show and mess up the whole inventory system" and that her clients would be pissed placing blame on me for a misunderstanding caused by her misleading and poorly communicated pricing system. The last thing anyone wants when they walk into a store is a lecture on how pricing works. You're there to shop and enjoy yourself not to be pulled aside, talked down to, or pestered by the shop owner because their pricing system isn't clear. Although she ultimately gave me a refund, it only happened after she made me feel small and criminal for asking a reasonable question. I have never experienced customer service like this at any other thrift store let alone any other business. Customers should not be made to feel intimidated or embarrassed for questioning confusing pricing. Proceed with caution if you shop here.
