Newspaper announcing grand opening in 1942

What an amazing little theater here in grass Valley! A classic from 1942 with art deco style all around. Neat little historical gem to check out when you're in the area, or even better yet to see a film. Much of the interior is kept as original as with the art deco style and is worth checking out even if you're schedule is too full for a movie.

The cutest little theater I've been to. The grass Valley locals know how to go in style. Nice art deco accents and I believe it's been there since 1942. A patron that was there that day said it was all the original furniture and design as well as underground tunnels! That was interesting! And the ticket price was only $10 for adults!

Historic Movie Theater in Grass Valley CA Del Oro Theatre, located on Mill Street in Grass Valley, was built in 1942. It is the building painted gold with the art-deco neon spire, a landmark in downtown Grass Valley, it is iconic and has a lot of history in it. Don't expect to walk in to a modern megaplex theatre, this isn't a Cinemark. It reminded me of the Noyo Theatre in Willits and the Tower Theatre in Sacramento, also a 3-screen movie theater. I decided to watch a movie. There is a vintage theatre ticket booth just outside but tickets must be purchased inside. Immediately as I entered the doors is a small lobby. I walked in and purchased for one at the concession stand, $10 for a matinee show. My movie was at theatre 3. Once inside you must ascend the steep steps to get to the movie. There are no assigned seating. The seats were cushioned, comfortable enough. The theater underwent renovations in the 1970's but it still held some of its historic charms... a marquee, art-deco light fixtures, a fancy ceiling mural, phone booth, and a drinking fountain. I'm not sure where you park around here if all you came here for is to watch a movie. I came here on a whim, a little exploring in this quaint town. I've always liked the charm of an old theater... We saw Wakanda forever...long movie but WELL worth it! Good sound.. good popcorn. TIP...call in advance to see exactly which theater is playing at...tonight was in #1 with just a few steps and close to the bathroom and concession area which was great since I was with someone disabled. BTW... Free fill ups on popcorn for large or extra large popcorn! This is an old movie theater with a lot of character and in the heart of downtown Grass Valley!

Terrible and Disrespectful Experience at Onyx Theater…read more I took three senior citizens to the Onyx Theater to see what we believed was a movie about the band Nirvana, since my sister was a big Nirvana fan and the group was excited to see it. The movie was titled "Nirvanna: The Band - The Show - The Movie." We spent nearly $100 to get in and $100 on food there, went into the theater, and within the first ten minutes realized it was not about the band Nirvana at all, but instead about two comedians pretending to be in a band with a similar name. We immediately went back to the front to explain the misunderstanding and politely asked for a refund. Instead of showing any understanding, the staff began criticizing the three seniors for not noticing that "Nirvanna" was spelled with two N's instead of one. They acted as if these seniors were foolish for not catching the subtle spelling difference (one N vs. two N's), which was incredibly rude and unnecessary. The way they treated them was insulting, embarrassing, and completely lacking in class. A simple misunderstanding turned into a humiliating experience because of how dismissive and condescending the staff was. One star for a truly terrible experience and shockingly rude customer service.

Overall, we had a really good movie experience here. The lines for popcorn weren't long at all, which is always a plus. This was also my first time at a theater where you serve yourself your own drinks and ICEEs. I've never experienced that before, but I actually liked being able to make my own drink exactly how I wanted it. The theater itself was comfortable. Our recliners worked perfectly, the temperature inside was just right, and everything made it easy to sit back, relax, and enjoy the movie. Spider-Man ended up being a good movie, and this turned into another great date experience for me and my girl. If we're ever back in the Roseville area and want to catch a movie, this is definitely the theater we'll be coming back to!

Luckily for us in the Sacramento area, we have one of the only forty-one theaters in the world that have the capability to show 70mm film properly. We have the Esquire IMAX Theatre located on K Street in downtown Sacramento. The last film that I felt the draw to watch in 70mm at this theater was the Christopher Nolan classic, Oppenheimer. Well, he is at it again with his release of The Odyssey. I just knew I had to see it there-this film was the event of the year in the movie universe and seeing it anywhere else when we had this option available to us just wasn't going to cut it for me. So I jumped on their website to look for tickets and boom they are pretty much sold out for all the premium showings for weeks-so I bit the bullet and decided to go watch it at 11am on a Friday morning. I am a member of their free rewards program called the Directors Club and with that you get $2 off each ticket purchase. Tickets ended up costing $23 per ticket, which is pretty high but hey it's the movie event of the year. Parking at this theater is mostly a parking garage, but they do give you a discount inside the theater to apply to your parking but it's a long movie so parking still ends up being pretty high. I do love that all seating at the Esquire is reserved seating, so no real rush to get in line or run in and grab your seat. Pro Tip: When selecting seats at this theater, always try to get as far back in the theater as possible and try for closest to center as possible. For this showing I got quite lucky in that I had back row seats and just a few off dead center-I couldn't have asked for much better. The screen in this theaters is unlike anything I will ever get used to-the screen is a massive 6 stories tall-it's truly something to see. The sound is so pure as well-sometimes you feel like you're going to be blasted out of your seat when watching a movie at Esquire. I find the cost of the concessions at this theater are a tad bit cheaper than I experience at Regal in Natomas or Delta Shores. Now the real question that needs to be answered and this is coming from someone who has seen this movie on a regular screen at another theater and on 70mm here at Esquire--Is it worth paying the extra money to see this film on 70mm at Esquire IMAX? The answer is a resounding YES!!! If you have a 70mm theater anywhere near you-run don't walk to that theater as soon as possible and watch this film in all the glory it was intended to be seen and consider yourself lucky to be near one of only 41 theaters on the globe that lets you have this experience. This Esquire IMAX Theatre isn't just another movie theater. It's a destination.
