I've always seen this theatre downtown but didn't know it was 1 of 40ish IMAX 70mm theaters in the world! The theatre is definitely older. The seats are not really comfortable. They're actually quite squeaky too. The screen size is amazing though. About 1 hour into watching The Odyssey, the screen shut off for about 15 minutes. I guess it overheated. It gave us an impromptu bathroom break which I didn't mind. It just kind of broke the immersion of this great movie. I'll definitely come back for another IMAX experience. read more

Every few years a movie comes out with the bold claim of greatness that can only be fully appreciated on 70mm film. Luckily for us in the Sacramento area, we have one of the only forty-one theaters in the world that have the capability to show 70mm film properly. We have the Esquire IMAX Theatre located on K Street in downtown Sacramento. The last film that I felt the draw to watch in 70mm at this theater was the Christopher Nolan classic, Oppenheimer. Well, he is at it again with his release of The Odyssey. I just knew I had to see it there-this film was the event of the year in the movie universe and seeing it anywhere else when we had this option available to us just wasn't going to cut it for me. So I jumped on their website to look for tickets and boom they are pretty much sold out for all the premium showings for weeks-so I bit the bullet and decided to go watch it at 11am on a Friday morning. I am a member of their free rewards program called the Directors Club and with that you get $2 off each ticket purchase. Tickets ended up costing $23 per ticket, which is pretty high but hey it's the movie event of the year. Parking at this theater is mostly a parking garage, but they do give you a discount inside the theater to apply to your parking but it's a long movie so parking still ends up being pretty high. I do love that all seating at the Esquire is reserved seating, so no real rush to get in line or run in and grab your seat. Pro Tip: When selecting seats at this theater, always try to get as far back in the theater as possible and try for closest to center as possible. For this showing I got quite lucky in that I had back row seats and just a few off dead center-I couldn't have asked for much better. The screen in this theaters is unlike anything I will ever get used to-the screen is a massive 6 stories tall-it's truly something to see. The sound is so pure as well-sometimes you feel like you're going to be blasted out of your seat when watching a movie at Esquire. I find the cost of the concessions at this theater are a tad bit cheaper than I experience at Regal in Natomas or Delta Shores. Now the real question that needs to be answered and this is coming from someone who has seen this movie on a regular screen at another theater and on 70mm here at Esquire--Is it worth paying the extra money to see this film on 70mm at Esquire IMAX? The answer is a resounding YES!!! If you have a 70mm theater anywhere near you-run don't walk to that theater as soon as possible and watch this film in all the glory it was intended to be seen and consider yourself lucky to be near one of only 41 theaters on the globe that lets you have this experience. The only theater that can show 70mm IMAX in the area! Came to see odyssey in 70mm IMAX. The hype around this movie and filming specifically for the format really pushed me to watch it. From that perspective it was amazing! On the other end, the theater has seen better days. The days are not in the best shape and the theater is not as convenient or comfy as other theaters. It is defintely an old school theater and defintely had it charms but I would only really come to it to see movies in in 70mm IMAX, otherwise I would rather go to a modern theater for most other movies. Defintely an experience and would recommend it to see any movie that was designed specifically for the format! read more

Overall we had a very nice experience watching the Odyssey in IMAX. The theatre has only one large IMAX screen which provided an amazing experience worth the trip from Folsom. However, the theatre is pretty long in the tooth and can use some upgrades with the seats (reclining would be great) and in the restroom. How did I not know about this theater before! Love the vibe, especially the support for special happenings at big movie events. The entrance and lobby are a positive nod to the history of theaters in look and feel. Concessions had a good selection. I was able to arrive early and enjoy my snacks and soda early to take in the experience. The theatre was clean and the staff helpful. Parking lots in the area in several directions, which is helpful being downtown. Mark S. Allen was even there from the local entertainment news team. What a great time my team had (we do the mobile Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes game) and felt right at home. Thank you for a great first time experience. I will be back for sure. read more

Saw Michael here opening week and it was a blast. Divine customer service, fresh and yummy popcorn that did not bother my sensitive stomach compared to the junk at cinemark. Have your tickets on your phone cuz they will ask. The icee machine rocks and they even have beers! The theater was clean and reminded me of the exact imax theater at great America theme park actually. The chairs were cool and comfy, but nothing like futuristic , more cozy vintage, some bimbos took our seats but karma will get em... Restrooms were fine, you can get parking validated at 2 parking garages nearby, there was a super long line at concessions, good customer service, plenty of people here on a weekend midday. The imax movie experience here was good, you could really get immersed in the experience. read more

Fresh popcorn, and a huge screen - watching Fire & Ash in IMAX 3D was spectacular. Although the movie was quite long, the experience was fun and expected. Parking can be difficult so plan accordingly, Allow 10min to find parking. ESQUIRE building parking (13th ST). Some metered parking on J street or the Hyatt parking garage on 12th ST. We came on a Friday night to celebrate Top Gun's 40 year anniversary. They are re-releasing Top Gun (1986) & Maverick (2022) as a double feature or individual showing in IMAX. We saw Maverick and boy was it worth it! I saw it in the theaters when in first came out, then atleast 5 more times streaming on Amazon. This was a whole new experience and it even felt like a new movie. The sound, bigger than life images, buttery popcorn and Cherry Coke ICEE was perfect too! Luckily, Sac had a lot going on this night, so majority of the theater was empty so we go excellent seats with empty seats to the left and right of us. The seats do recline back, but with the help of physics, not a button and because of that if you have long legs you may not have enough leg room if the person in front of you elects to lean their chair all the way back. read more

Worst IMAX experience ever for the odyssey. Had tickets in row B9 through 12. All of the seats were mislabeled and so when we arrived, there were people in our seats. The movie had just started so by the time we figured it out we sat in the front row to not cause a scene and at the end of the movie we realized it was because all the seats were mislabeled. There were two seat #12, next to 8, etc. we even took pictures. The manager Christian was no help at all. All the employees have perfected the Gen Z stare and were also zero help. triple check your seat numbers. I just attended a weekend event at the IMAX theatre. This location was great. There were at least three parking garages within walking distance including the IMAX garage. The theatre was clean. The women's restroom was clean however, I wish they had emptied the trash cans a little more frequently. The screen and surround sound was top notch. Definitely a great location for a film festival, private company movie showing and/or red carpet event. It's awesome that Sacramento has one of the few theaters in the entire world that screens genuine 70 mm IMAX films. That being said, it just could be better. I went and saw the Odyssey with my wife a week ago. The theater itself is fine, if not a little dated. It is certainly cramped though. We sat in the lower half but we might as well have been in the first row at any other theater we were so close. The projection quality was also unfortunately poor. I don't know how much was due to the artistic choices of the movie itself vs our particular seat location but it was almost unbearably dim. I don't remember the same issue when we saw Oppenheimer in 70 mm a few years back so hopefully it's not a projection issue but I'm no expert. I want the theater to succeed but if visual quality is meant to be the main drawing point it is missing the mark. read more

This rundown imax theater leaves A LOT to be desired. I went to watch The Odyssey because I was hoping for a true imax 70mm experience. Should've went with the imax digital version instead. The film was out of focus the entire time, the surround sound was just terrible, and the vinyl covered rocking chairs need to be replace asap. This theater desecrated the IMAX reputation. My home projector can project a movie better than this theater and that is a damn shame. read more

Went to this theater for the first time and it was our first Imax movie. The Odyssey was a good movie to watch on this big screen with very good audio acoustics. But that was the only good thing about taking the family here. I will never come back here. The staff checking the tickets were nice and professional. The kids working behind the concession stand were hit and miss, but the line did move fast. We felt rushed and the person working the register seemed annoyed and I told him it was our first time here. The inside smelled old and musty. The chairs are old, they do not recline. The chair I had seemed worn and was very uncomfortable. Parking is terrible. There is only public garage parking and 2 of 3 lots were full. The one we did find was a couple of blocks away. We had to walked through urinated smelling garage and streets to get to the theater. It cost an additional $20 in parking and they do not validate. The worst part was that the movie stopped 15 minutes into the movie. It took 20 minutes for it to get started up again. Apparently this is the second time it has happened at this theater. I guess we got lucky it started back up. I will never take my family back here again. I give it three stars for the big screen and audio only. read more

I went to see Avatar last night and, although we paid senior pricing, the total for two tickets was still over $40. I didn't mind paying the higher price since I was expecting the full 3D movie experience, but unfortunately, I was disappointed. The theater itself could really use some updates. The seats are worn--mine squeaked every time I moved, and the cushioning wasn't very comfortable. Another big issue was the amount of talking during the movie. I shushed a couple of times, but it felt like some people thought they were watching a movie at home rather than in a theater. On a positive note, the big screen was fantastic and perfect for a movie like Avatar. That part of the experience did not disappoint. As for concessions, the popcorn was just okay. I asked for lightly buttered, but it was heavily buttered instead, leaving me with greasy hands throughout the movie. Overall, the potential is there, but better seating, improved audience etiquette enforcement, and more attention to customer requests would go a long way toward improving the experience. read more

Can't really express how lucky Sacramento is to have an IMAX in the heart of our downtown. It's totally something we all take for granted. 50 feet tall and 72 feet wide, seeing a movie here dwarfs any other viewing experience known to man. Tickets aren't cheap but you get what you pay for; an unparalleled movie viewing time. I've seen countless movies here and each time I can't believe how big the screen is. There isn't an inch of space wasted on screen. The seats here aren't the best or most comfortable but they do lean back a bit and as other movie goers pass by you aren't forced to move too much to accommodate them. The cafe here is pretty good. Popcorn, icees, hot dogs, fresh personalized pizzas. Plenty of options for anyone. read more

Great experience. We bought our tickets beforehand to see the new Avatar movie a few months ago. The theatre itself is huge so it is spacious and the screen has a great view from almost every seat (don't know about the front seats as I got middle row seats towards the end of the row). Some staff checking tickets and giving out the glasses seemed unhappy to be there but their job is pretty mundane so can't blame that on em. The staff at the popcorn and drinks were much more pleasant. Overall we had a great time. Parking is right across the street in the parking garage shared with the hotel. Went to this Theatre a couple weeks ago to see the new Indiana Jones movie & The Dial of Destiny. Had a great experience with friendly staff, an amazing theatre with lively props for the new movie promo, & comfortable seating while watching the movie. I enjoyed the new Indiana movie so much it had a great movie script than the traditional Jones series that many fans follow. Its definitely worth a watch and you will not be disappointed. If you attend this theatre, they have great movie snacks you can take into the theatre with you. However, if you show up super early from a commute like my friend and I did they have plenty of resturants nearby to grab a quick bite eat and walk around and enjoy beautiful Sacramento scenery. I also believe during July they have free concerts every Friday in the park downtown so if you're looking for something to do you should also definitely check that out. read more

Tonight was my first time visiting this IMax and it will be the last. I went to see Project Hail Mary and while the move was 10/10, the move theater experience was sub par. You have a highly popular book turned into movie, opening night, full house, and NO air conditioner. Not even a warning that the AC was broken. The room was uncomfortably hot and stuffy which made it hard to enjoy an otherwise good movie. The theater is small and outdated. The seats recline, but they don't stay that way. I paid $23 for an evening show + $23 for parking in the garage next dooe. Overall, the experience was so uncomfortable that it almost ruined the movie. I won't be going back. read more

It's our family's first time to watch a movie here and the whole experience was positive. I researched and read reviews prior to our visit so I wasn't expecting much since I read a lot of poor reviews and I didn't get my hopes up in order not to get disappointed. We booked our time slot a week prior and since Oppenheimer's release date was a few weeks back, there were plenty of available seats when we got our tickets. Upon arrival, we didn't need to show our etickets to anyone and went straight to get food. The popcorn and drinks were refillable. We got pizza, salted pretzels with cheese, popcorn and sodas. Unfortunately, both the pizza and salted pretzel were hard to chew since it's not hot and fresh anymore. The popcorn tasted good though. Since the movie was 3 hour long, the seats were not as comfortable and I wish it was a lazy boy couch like other movie houses. My legs hurt after the movie since it was long. Another downside was there were no tables to put your food tray on and since we got a lot of food, it was hard to balance everything on my lap. The seats were mostly side by side with a long row before the exit on each level so going in and out can be disturbing for other movie watchers if and when you have to go to the restroom. Luckily, no one went the whole duration of the movie. Another downside was the parking was not part of the validation (we parked just across the entrance of the theater; it was very convenient but pricey). After the movie, we went upstairs and checked the behind the scenes. As for all the staff we encountered, everyone was nice and efficient and had pleasing personalities. Overall, my experience was good but it could have been better with just minor seat renovations. Hopefully, in the future they renovate and it will be the best movie experience. Both wifey and I think it's been well over twenty years since we have last seen a movie here. We have been spoiled watching movies elsewhere where they have reclining chairs. This one does NOT! They are behind times. Our personal opinion...just sayin. Parking is not convenient here by the way. On the same night we had purchased tickets for this only one IMAX showing it coincided with the first night of Wicked at the SAFE community center & Billie Ellish concert at Golden 1 Center. Many parking structures were aware of this & charged prepay parking fees. Like the dreaded 10th & L street parking structure charged 15 bucks. So we skipped that. Luckily we found a place to park not far from the theater. The theater was opened 25 minutes prior to showing. Wifey went to the restroom & came back when the movie had already started. It was pitch black in the theater she said but luckily she had her phone with her & used the flashlight! Best seats are in the back and in the middle areas. Not in the front or the side ends. Seeing a movie in the IMAX theater wasn't really an advantage to tell you the truth but bc this particular movie only had the one limited showing here locally in town. Quite annoying why it wasn't showing widely but over a week later!!! We just were too stubborn to drive to the Bay Area & so glad we didn't bc wifey felt the movie was average at best. Too wonky & unorthodox. Aw I have the most impatient wifey. What can I say! LOLOLOL it did give us a chance to experience this movie theater after so many years of being away from it but it is Not our favorite. read more

Went to see interstellar the AC unit grate in the back left corner was rattling loud the WHOLE movie. Even during quiet parts it was like someone was shaking it. I got up to see what it was told the staff and they said they've "gotten complaints about it before." I'm not understanding how you can get complaints about something that ruins a movie and the management does nothing to fix it? I'd really just like my 45$ back. I've seen a few movies here and there's nothing better than seeing an action movie on an Imax screen. I am thankful we have an Imax theater nearby, but it's definitely a bit outdated. The chairs aren't very comfortable and the concession area is small with only a few people working behind one counter making wait times long during peak times. Although on one occasion we were a few minutes late and found the entire front part of the theater deserted so couldn't get concessions if we wanted to. Finding parking can also be tricky since there's no designated lot just for the theater. read more

First time at this theater and first time using the new dbox seats with motion to create immersive experiences with synchronized movements and vibrations to the actions in the movie. I watched Gladiator 2 so it was action packed with moving and vibrations. The chair also lounges. If your short scute up high on the chair or bring a sweater from behind your head, I'm 5'4 and the headrest is too high. All in all so fun! The theatre itself was clean within the theatre and the bathrooms. I did not go to concessions so no review there. read more
