This has to be one of the best regal theatres we have visited within the scope of our regal subscription. Why? Let me begin by telling you this story. First of all we live in Elk Grove California south of Sacramento. Why of all places did we come here? Bc my better half said there's a movie being shown only at this particular location. An indie film to be exact. I drove an hour to get here despite running errands in the process so we managed to get here just in time. Parking spots were numerous. Yay! We didn't have to stand in line as we just went to the computer terminal area by the refreshments to purchase our tickets via our membership card in our Regal app. The satellite dish was a little slow but finally came through to get us our tickets. The gal employee explained that thankfully! We proceeded to the theater room although my wife needed to use the ladies room which she said was all good & clean. The seats here were stadium just like the ones at Natomas but we have a particular spot where we favor to sit at so not such a big deal like for some people & that was the only reason for one star less. After leaving this short real life movie a man approached my wife & asked how she liked the movie. Come to find out he was the producer of the film! We talked for a bit & he gave us one of the last posters signed by the real life actor & took a video of us too. My wife did all of the talking of course! LOL It certainly was an amazing surprise & doesn't always happen! Maybe too we watch numerous amounts of movies too. Will we be back? Possibly.

Commercials and more commercials... the movie was supposed to start at 3:50pm. It is now 4:17pm. Still watching commercials

The movie was advertised as starting at 3:50pm. It's 4:20pm, and we are still watching commercials.

    Lights on during the show

Nice theater with clean seating. However, the bathrooms need attention and the popcorn is now too salty.

Parking takes some patience on a Saturday afternoon - but once we started up the parking ramp and saw what a snarl it was, we were already committed. Is backing into the space a new trend? We saw (and waited) for at least 10 cars to back into their spot - this was the entire reason for the traffic jam. But once parked, it's just a quick jaunt over to the second floor entrance. Of the theaters I've been to in the Sacramento area, this one is head and shoulders above the rest. The staff is engaging (call out to Ethan scanning tickets) . The management of this location has brought together a team that enjoy helping the patrons and appear to enjoy working as a team. There was some training going on while we were there and the suggestions given by fellow team members were thoughtful and - this is the big thing I noticed -were received in a welcome manner. The concession stand was well maintained and the crew was busy tidying up after what looked like a crush of people. I do love that I can get a glass of wine at the theater. There a small section with high tops and chairs to sit with a glass of wine or actual onsite made to order appetizers/starters. The theater itself was super tidy, reclining seats are comfortable and the sound system was perfect. The bathrooms were immaculate. I didn't see a single stall out of order, and after what had been a full day of use, every thing was well stocked and very clean. What I'm going to remember, and what going to bring me back to this location, is the staff.

We purchased our tickets 2 weeks early online (very convenient), and were happy to enjoy front row dead center without anyone around us. We were in the movie. :) Staff were friendly but aloof in how they carried themselves in the lobby area. Seemed like a lot on mingling about. Bathrooms were clean but the one by theatre #1 had multiple sink faucets barely attached to the counter. A little janky for a nice theatre. Since we were front row, you access the hard wood or vinyl flooring and well, all I can say is yuck. Sticky, like make noise as you walk sticky in #1 last night. Service at the bar was timely, and the servers in the theatre were professional and quick. Margarita pizza was pleasant, drinks were great. Extra butter popcorn did not come out hot, more luke warm. We ordered the coconut shrimp at the bar, and the shrimp were definitely cooked, albeit a little tougher than I like. We wanted to order the mozzarella sticks but we were joking about what we thought the texture of those overcooked would be. The experience, a great movie, and pricing could have made it a 5. Had to take a point for the shrimp, bathroom maintenance needed and the sticky floor. We did wish we could have picked up our popcorn fresh, but we understood the style of the facility is not normal theater experience. Lastly, we really did appreciate the theatre on screen telling people to be respectful, remove crying kids, and think of everyone's experience around you.

Gone is the balcony seating and additional screens from decades before. It is now a singular 350-seat non-profit theatre run by friendly volunteers. As I write this, the theatre is temporarily closed for some needed repairs and restoration work. I seriously cannot wait until it reopens, as I come here pretty regularly with friends to enjoy the adventure documentaries that this theatre prominently features. The State Theatre is always super clean, the seats are comfortable, and there truly isn't a bad view of the screen anywhere you sit. Plus, the volunteers make really good popcorn and serve local beer and wine at reasonable prices - all to benefit this fantastic historic theater. I've seen several inspiring films here, but a recent screening of "Buried: The 1982 Alpine Meadows Avalanche" was particularly moving for me as it was also followed by a Q&A with not only the filmmaker but also a few key people from the documentary. I really look forward to seeing more amazing films at this historic theatre and encourage everyone to check them out when they reopen!

Luckily for us in the Sacramento area, we have one of the only forty-one theaters in the world that have the capability to show 70mm film properly. We have the Esquire IMAX Theatre located on K Street in downtown Sacramento. The last film that I felt the draw to watch in 70mm at this theater was the Christopher Nolan classic, Oppenheimer. Well, he is at it again with his release of The Odyssey. I just knew I had to see it there-this film was the event of the year in the movie universe and seeing it anywhere else when we had this option available to us just wasn't going to cut it for me. So I jumped on their website to look for tickets and boom they are pretty much sold out for all the premium showings for weeks-so I bit the bullet and decided to go watch it at 11am on a Friday morning. I am a member of their free rewards program called the Directors Club and with that you get $2 off each ticket purchase. Tickets ended up costing $23 per ticket, which is pretty high but hey it's the movie event of the year. Parking at this theater is mostly a parking garage, but they do give you a discount inside the theater to apply to your parking but it's a long movie so parking still ends up being pretty high. I do love that all seating at the Esquire is reserved seating, so no real rush to get in line or run in and grab your seat. Pro Tip: When selecting seats at this theater, always try to get as far back in the theater as possible and try for closest to center as possible. For this showing I got quite lucky in that I had back row seats and just a few off dead center-I couldn't have asked for much better. The screen in this theaters is unlike anything I will ever get used to-the screen is a massive 6 stories tall-it's truly something to see. The sound is so pure as well-sometimes you feel like you're going to be blasted out of your seat when watching a movie at Esquire. I find the cost of the concessions at this theater are a tad bit cheaper than I experience at Regal in Natomas or Delta Shores. Now the real question that needs to be answered and this is coming from someone who has seen this movie on a regular screen at another theater and on 70mm here at Esquire--Is it worth paying the extra money to see this film on 70mm at Esquire IMAX? The answer is a resounding YES!!! If you have a 70mm theater anywhere near you-run don't walk to that theater as soon as possible and watch this film in all the glory it was intended to be seen and consider yourself lucky to be near one of only 41 theaters on the globe that lets you have this experience. This Esquire IMAX Theatre isn't just another movie theater. It's a destination.

From that perspective it was amazing! On the other end, the theater has seen better days. The days are not in the best shape and the theater is not as convenient or comfy as other theaters. It is defintely an old school theater and defintely had it charms but I would only really come to it to see movies in in 70mm IMAX, otherwise I would rather go to a modern theater for most other movies. Defintely an experience and would recommend it to see any movie that was designed specifically for the format!
