I have been going there for almost 20 years. I was very pleased with my doctor & the care that I was given. However , after my last colonoscopy, I had issues . I called Many times to get an appointment , I left several messages that week about urgency to see me , and how sick I was ...but never received a call back. I had to go to emergency room & now seeing another doctor to correct my issues. A week later someone finally called me back. I urge the Doctors to please hire more efficient staff to answer your phones! It's frustrating when you can't speak to anyone to make appointments, speak with a nurse or have your calls returned in a timely manner. read more

I was ill for too long with their service. I had to deal with a PA without any Dr supervision or any appointment to see the Gi doctor. Finally found the cause of my daily pain by researching and diagnosing it myself. It was a simple solution that they never even thouught of. It must have cost my insurance more than the state board or the Attorney Generals office would approve of. My advise is don't try this group, and look up on yelp or web md to find someone who cares. read more

The nurses and support staff do an incredible job. Whoever is running the office is most likely the problem. My husband and I both left messages to set up an appointment. Both messages were never returned. He set up a virtual appointment, paid the co-pay earlier in the day and the office never called. I had two appointments. The first one was just a doctor's appointment at 9:00 am and he was 30 minutes late. My second was for my colonoscopy and they were running over an hour behind but they don't say anything to you nor apologize for the inconvenience. The only reason we knew is that we heard the receptionist speaking to someone on the phone. There's an aloofness about this business that is unwarranted. We finally switched to Wilmington Health Gastro and have received incredible service. read more

I have very little experience in specialist offices, to preface, but found Wilmington Gastroenterology to be quick and efficient. The staff at the desk and the attendant who helped me get checked in (shout out to Johnny) were polite, professional, and treated me with respect. I didn't wait long but after seeing the doctor and describing my symptoms, she (somewhat painfully) examined me for a total of about 5 minutes and sent me off with a prescription. It only occurred to me later that I had no idea how to contact a compounding facility, how to administer my medication or dosage (not listed on the prescription), or what next steps would be after my follow up in a few months. Will update this review after I have a future course of action. The staff were great, the doctor seemed like she might have been having a rough morning, and thank goodness Google is free. ****** Update after ~3 weeks: I called and left a message asking to schedule my follow up. Received a voicemail back stating an appointment had already been scheduled. It luckily fit into my schedule, but that was the first I'd heard of it, haha! read more

Outrageously awful! STEER CLEAR! I was referred here through Tricare for a time sensitive colonoscopy. I was told that Wilmington GI would call me as soon as the referral was placed in their system to schedule the appointment. The authorization was given on May 24, 2024 and have had the physical paperwork from Tricare mailed to my home since May 26, 2024. I allowed 2 weeks to pass before calling their office to schedule an appointment since I had not heard from them. On not one occasion was I able to speak to an actual person before being sent over to a voicemail box each and every time. After leaving several voicemails over the course of a week or so, I finally got a call back from a person. Unfortunately, I wasn't staring directly at my phone in anticipation for their call and was unable to pick up. I called back within two minutes and was again sent to leave a voicemail. When I finally got back in touch with someone, after no less than 10 phone calls to their office, I was told they have no record of me. I let the woman know that I had the physical paperwork in front of me and would be happy to give them my authorization number from Tricare. I was told that they WILL NOT schedule an appointment until they have a physical copy of the authorization in their hands. I told her this appointment was of a time sensitive nature and I needed to get this ball rolling. She told me that I could fax the document over to them and we could go from there. So, I paid the money to have the document faxed over to their office, and followed it up with a voicemail to confirm receipt. I find it absurd that an email isn't an acceptable means of sending over paperwork, since literally everyone has email. As of today, two months to the day, July 24, 2024, I have made at minimum 23 phone calls to this place. When I called today I actually spoke with someone on the 6th phone call attempt and told her I can never get a hold of someone and that it has been 2 months of calling their office. She hurried me off the phone and said she would send me to a scheduler who was not on the phone. Straight. To. Voicemail. When I received a call back, she again stated that they do not have me in the system and will not proceed forward without the physical documentation in hand. Absolutely absurd! I advise her of the faxed information and time sensitive nature and was met with the personality of paint drying. I spoke with Jessica and Crystal, although I'm not sure in what order. Neither helpful, neither willing to solve a problem. I am from Los Angeles, California with a population in ONE city of 3.8 MILLION people and never have a problem getting someone to answer a phone call at a doctor's office nor scheduling an appointment. Wilmington, North Carolina has a population of 120 THOUSAND and the county of New Hanover has 234 THOUSAND, in case anyone wants to argue they have additional patients coming from outside of Wilmington. There is NO reason why a patient should be waiting 2 literal months to speak to a human being to make an appointment. I will absolutely be going elsewhere for my care and have relayed to my primary care physician the absolute lack of care from your facility. Luckily, they will be referring their patients elsewhere as well, as they also do not find this treatment satisfactory. Sadly, your office is holding peoples' health and well-being in their hands. Everything was going fine until I ran into a huge problem getting cardiac clearance. I went to the ER four times for chest pain and had multiple EKGs; the ER doctors ultimately said it was most likely gastrointestinal. I had a positive stool test and was scheduled to have a colonoscopy and endoscopy at the same time. Because of the chest pain, the office required cardiac clearance. I completed all the testing the cardiologist requested (EKGs, stress test, an ultrasound) and my cardiologist faxed over the full report saying I was cleared to proceed. Despite that, your office insisted you still needed a signed piece of paper. Nobody called me to confirm receipt I left messages and got no callbacks. so I drove into the clinic to figure out what was missing. Staff said the doctor "had to sign our thing" and that they would fax it, but I was never contacted and still don't have my procedure scheduled. I'm in pain, I've done everything asked of me, and now I'm being made to chase paperwork from multiple offices. The lack of communication and coordination between providers is unacceptable. If you value patients, start confirming receipts, explain exactly what form is needed up front, and stop making people drive in and chase staff for answers. read more

My daughter has Crohns Disease and the care she's gotten at Wilmington Health has been horrible. She is on Stelara injections and needs prior authoriztion every month before the specialty pharmacy can send her the shot. It is NIGHTMARE because the doctor and nurse do NOT the send the PA without repeated requests from my daughter. This month she has been waiting for two weeks even though the nurse told her the PA was sent which it wasn't. She has been extremely sick while waiting for her injection. read more

My husband had a colonoscopy today. They took him back over 30 minutes past his appointment time. While I was waiting for him, a woman came out from having blood drawn and tripped and fell and hit her head on the waiting room furniture. The staff jumped into action to try to help her but she refused. However it was clear she had hit her head and they let her walk out. I only hope someone called to check to make sure she was ok later in the day and she didn't have a concussion. For his procedure, It took five (very painful) attempts (different people) to get his IV in, which resulted in him dripping blood all over the floor and full body shaking from the pain and the cold temperature in the space. My husband's procedure itself was fine and Dr Dalal was nice when he came to meet me in recovery with an update. But the recovery area was **freezing.** I had a sweatshirt and long pants on and I was cold (and normally run very hot). My husband was visibly shivering in recovery, even after I asked for extra blankets for him. In the past at other facilities they've had warm blankets and even air pumps to blow warm air under the blanket. Not here. The recovery nurses kept trying to kick him out even though he said he was still lightheaded and in pain from the gas they pump in. Eventually we left, mostly because we felt pressured that he was taking up space and needed him out. Like the old joke, you don't have to go home but you can't stay here. They also use an outside anesthesia place, which bills separately and which may or may not be in network with your insurance but you don't get to find that out until they file the claim but you have to sign that you're cool with whatever they charge. They also asked fine had a DNR and then said it didn't matter because they wouldn't honor it anyway. read more

Feigned sincerity after years of me telling them over and over the specifics of my symptoms, never once actually cared enough to pursue ruling them out. I Spent thousands of dollars, not to mentions scans from Delaney radiology that the Doctors here are almost certainly getting 'kick back' commisions on, and this facatory model BUSINESS did not help me even 1%. A violation of the Hippocratic oath from start to finish. With only ~15 minutes of fake sincerity sprinkled in after I finally spoke up for myself after more than a year of getting no actual help. Truly I should be refunded and have a letter of apology written to me. read more

Dr King was very reassuring and made a point to leave me a message ASAP with the results that were not bad . He could have waited a week to get back to me, because he is gone for the coming week. So maybe the other practitioners here are good, in fact most of the nurses and assistants I encountered were professional and efficient and well meaning -- like say Amanda at Triage, but my particular team became an issue. At first the intial visits were good and to be fair my visits with Justin Miller MD and Hannah Baldwin were pretty straightforward and overall good bedside manner. It was what came after. I was relieved because Hannah Baldwin ordered alot of tests at first. However, the treatment and testing was not enough in my opinion or the wrong direction, as I mentioned to the team several times that despite all of that, my symptoms continued and they suggested FMT which I explained I was hesitant about due to being immune compromised - they insisted on this despite my concerns and dismissed any of my worries, which turned out to be valid when the medication gave me a fever of 105 and I had convulsing chills for 12 hrs. I had asked for more testing, testing that is fairly straightforward such as a stool sample and they just wouldn't grant it to me, despite all the glaring issues in blood work, ultrasound, and constant pain and diarrhea and my history of constant infections. None of that was considered. Also, when I showed up at the office in tears simply asking for an expedited stool test just so we would have a reference (especially with my history of infections) and not go to the ER and clog their system when a simple test could resolve the issue, I was dismissed. The nurse Luva, who is Justin Miller MD's assistant that was handling my case was persistent in not listening to my needs and eventually even dismissed my request as "my problem" -- I raised these concerns with office manager, the nurses and care team providers for negligence and let them know I was choosing to terminate my relationship with them and planning on reporting to NC board. They childishly then sent me a letter (a letter I assume the assistant wrote since I was dealing with her) that it was them choosing to terminate the relationship (almost a week later after I had already done so) rather than addressing the issue and confronting like true professionals. It was almost that scenario of "no you're not breaking up with me I'm breaking up with you" - as I said, childish and unprofessional behavior that does not ensure trust whatsoever. A good professional clinic would address these concerns and speak to their clients to do better rather than try to save their own butt on medical paper. And at least catalogue the truth in my medical records that I was the one terminating the relationship due to THEIR negligence. I mean, the gall of them. When I let them know about my awful reaction to the aforementioned medication, instead of taking responsibility or having a brief discussion, and answering my questions, they insisted I not take it and instead of offer an alterative as our relationship comes to an end, they completely cut everything off in order to save their butt legally or assume any responsibility. (This is when the letter came through.) That tells you alot about the integrity of these people. So if you're looking for that in a practitioner who will not care about you but only cares about getting patients in and out, or seeing the patient as a burden, or covering their own butt, then this will be a place for you. I never leave reviews but this was just appalling. To date, still haven't received a phone call or touch base from their office manager. So again, you see how much "they care." In comparison, when I've gone to Duke Hospital/Clinic - for instance - they'll even apologize to me for making wait on hold or something trivial. So much more attentive! I mean the patient care difference is just night and day. If you have an option to go else where, please try or maybe you'll have better luck than I did here. Should not have to be a battle to get good care (and despite these other reviews, if you look at the negative ones here, they complain about exactly the same thing and what I also experienced.) My husband has liver disease that is somewhat controlled but has developed severe chronic diarrhea and abdominal discomfort. A PA over the phone told him to take Metamucil which made everything worse. A CAT scan was scheduled but the scheduler neglected to tell him that it was 1:30 AM, not PM and he missed the appointment. The physicians do not take me seriously (I am a veterinarian with a PhD in Comparative Neuropathology) when I try to discuss his case with them. They are always in a rush and lack empathy. English is not his first language and he has trouble understanding the medical jargon. read more

I went to Wilmington Gastroenterology today and was impressed with them the minute I walked through the door. The staff smiled, said hello and invited me up to the desk to check in. I realize that I could've been there at a busier time , but I wasn't. I went back to see Dr Klein and did NOT wait long at all until he came in the exam room. I was impressed with his vast knowledge and willingness to take as much time as needed to answer all of my questions. I was not rushed in any way. Wilmington GI has problems billing insurance correctly. They call and tell you there is a problem with your insurance. I called the insurance and gave them the dates of service to find out they had never been billed. I also checked the insurance portal and verified nothing had been submitted. This results in long phone calls between the patient, insurance, and Wilmington GI. I do not recommend this practice. I was on a three-way phone call with the insurance and we had trouble getting to a live person. We just kept getting transferred around and had to leave a message. we were also disconnected twice. read more

To be fair, there were some good hearted people & many more clearly 'professional' people just doing their jobs. With that said, my anecdotal experience with this organization... the worst overall experience with any business/organization/institution I've ever had. I was never taken seriously in describing my symptoms or what I was experiencing even once. (Which has completely derailed my life) Rather, I was shuffled through a checklist, including staff members who 90% of the time didn't know at all what I had expressed as to what I was experiencing. The 'left hand had no idea what the right hand was doing.' One "doctor" I interacted with (who I'll keep anonymous) did nothing for me other than smugly dismiss my symptoms as being impossible. Following that up with insisting I change the medication I'd been prescribed, a medication that I said probably 30x wasn't working and was not addressing the symptoms I'd been experiencing. Symptoms that ruined my life, and still, 3 1/2 years later, leave me 'limping' through my days, constantly nauseous, lethargic, and miserable. The dr. in question here switched my medication, which reduced my quality of life from probably 50% normal to 40%, on top of how smug and disdainful this particular doctor was to me during the visit. After I finally had to essentially beg to be taken seriously, I did finally get more advanced scans scheduled, and what I thought was a different doctor taking me seriously. After getting 3k$ scan (after insurance) I was told quickly via email I'm all clear and all set, only needing an OTC medication to be fine... Months later, after having been too weak to work over the summer, I am struggling to pay my basic life essentials, attempting to catch up from thousands I spent and still owe to this institution as well as their lucrative business partner, Delaney radiology. Had I been taken seriously, it would have been 'nice' to have had some medical professional suggest I go somewhere else, perhaps Duke or any other more sophisticated operation to try and get help. Again, had my symptoms and what I've experienced directly been actually listened to, rather than ignored while trying to pacify me enough to get me in and out of the office, with a bill in hand, there seems no reason possible to me that they should have known the extremely expensive scans would not help rule out or even give clarity to what I described Symptomatically. By the end of it ( I will NEVER set foot in that place again), I owe thousands, haven't got my life back even 1%, and my last interaction after my 3k out of pocket MRI, was attempting to ask an associated question via email, only to receive the response that I need to 'schedule an appointment', and have the chance to talk to some other staff member that has never heard of me, hasn't read my file, and will do absolutely nothing useful for me, but will take another 100$ from me that I don't have. Maybe the staff are burnt out, theoretically I have empathy for it and would understand that. With that said though, what about me here? My life has been completely derailed and I need(ed) help. I had hope I'd get help here, I spent every dollar I had and then some, and got literally LESS THAN NOTHING. I would have been better off using a simple A.I online search engine. To have my final experience with this organization be equivalent to an email reading... 'you're all set, any more questions give us 100 more dollars, otherwise take OTC medication and you're fine' is pretty fitting for my overall experiences on and off over 3 years. If you have any other practical option, go somewhere else. read more

I have had chronic diarrhea for almost 17 days as well as a family history of colon cancer. My primary care doctor referred me to them after going to the ER for an antiobiotic and that didnt work. When I got there the dr basically made me feel I was wasting her time and was aggravated for me even being there. Her words were "well I guess since you are here we can go ahead and evaluate you but there is no reason to be in our office for diarrhea". HORRIBLE bedside manner. They did blood work and stool sample. I had to message them almost 4 times for results. I was told to take 8 immodium a day and was sent on my way..... I won't go back. Still having my issues but I will go elswhere. read more

Hell yes I recommend this place ! Dr Sarah rydock is my doctor awesome place to go! They found out I had an allergic reaction to gluten after all these years, what has been buggy me in my tummy and my lower GI system. My other doctors couldn't figure this out but they did- a gut reset and bam - I literally lost 13 lbs of poop, I feel so better, I was so impacted from poop. I was poisoning myself full of gluten, old meds, junk food, that never was passed, yes ick, gross but after two and half bottles of miralax and their cleanse process for my endoscopy & colonoscopy done in the same day. Gosh I feel great, I eat for my blood type, I found out I have celiac disease, so I watch what I eat to the letter, and I poop every day! Yes poop, take my miralax! Eat fresh cook fiber also and I know I have microscopic colitis- so now I eat and live according! No more colonoscopy for 10 years- unless otherwise- ! I went to a nutritionist how to eat properly also! I recommend this place to the letter! The nurses are fabulous, my GI doctor is awesomeness! I can't asked for a better place honestly! At first, I was very impressed by this facility and the way it functioned, like a fine-oiled machine. But, I later realized that it's all about the money. I had seen the doctor for an initial expensive (level 5) consultation for chronic diarrhea, gone in for an expensive colonoscopy, which revealed active ulcerative colitis, and she wanted me back again for a follow-up visit. I'm not made of money, and I wanted to talk about the results of the medications quickly over the phone, but the staff were calling me frequently, insisting that I come in and "be seen" again....three weeks after the colonoscopy. Since I wasn't getting better on the doctor's protocol for medication, I decided to resume my former medication that I had with my California GI doctor, Humira, an injectable biologic, since I couldn't afford to go back again and hadn't even begun to pay for the colonoscopy and initial visit. But the injectable biologic didn't help, so I had no choice but to go back for a follow-up visit. The PA insisted on doing a rectal exam, and I asked her to check for hemorrhoids; but she basically just stuck her finger in my butt and quickly pulled it out, and then told me she hadn't checked for hemorrhoids. So what was the point? I'm sure that that finger up the butt is even more "cha-ching" for them. Once it is written in the report, they can bill at a higher level. Then, to top it all off, when I reiterated that I was back on the Humira (which I had said I was going to do over the phone when they tried to get me back in for a follow-up), but the Humira wasn't helping, the doctor "fired" me as a patient for taking my own medication that was not prescribed by her. On top of that, when I asked the PA to please let me speak with the doctor, the doctor refused. Then I asked to speak with the office manager, and the PA just came back into the exam room to tell me that they weren't charging me for the office visit. Yes, I was sent with my "walking papers" to find another GI doctor in the middle of treatment. Really? That is patient care? They don't consider that not every patient has so much money to keep spending on these expensive follow-up office visits. They don't care about continuity of care with former physicians. And they don't have any interest whatsoever in even talking to a patient to find out where patient might be coming from, financially, emotionally, medically. I was shocked. No such thing as a doctor making a return phone call anymore. Why, when they can make $250? When the doctor's scheduler had called me after the colonoscopy to set up the follow-up, I told her I couldn't afford another office visit and that I would be trying the Humira again--that I had several syringes in the fridge. So, why didn't they tell me THEN that if I continued the Humira without being seen, they would disown me as a patient? What is wrong with these big-money, conglomerate medical corporations these days, where it's all about making money & maintaining total control, without developing or nurturing patient-doctor relationships that feel more human? read more

My name is Sean and I'm 27 years old. Before coming to Wilmington GI I was referred by our family physician here in Wilmington N.C. I read the reviews and trusted my family physician that this place would take care of me with hemorrhoid issues that have been going on for a couple months. My first appointment was in the first week of January and the Doctor had recommended "Banding" over surgery in which I trusted him because he is the professional and this place seemed like they would resolve my issues. After the initial appointment, a flexible sigmoidoscopy was next to monitor my colon and rectum for the presence of ulcers, polyps or other abnormalities by inserting a tube with a camera into the rectum. After the Scoping I was scheduled for my 1st banding treatment. The 1st banding went okay but there was still a ton of questions I had no answers to, but I trusted the Doctor because that's what we are taught to do. The 2nd one was scheduled for 02/25/22. Here I am February 25th on a Friday afternoon with my 2nd banding treatment scheduled for 3:30 PM. I requested off work for this appointment, I get to the Facility, check in at the front desk, one of the nurse assistants call me to the back, He takes my vitals and places me in the room that was all set up with the banding equipment ready to go for the procedure, and has me sign a waiver to allow the procedure to take place..... An hour goes by with no one checking in, so my mother who was with me, exits the room to ask a nurse how much longer this will take. The nurse comes back about 5 minutes later asking if the treatment has been done, we politely replied no it has not. After she left the room, a friendly lady named Caroline who I believe was the Physician's Assistant came in and explained to me that somehow somewhere along the line there was an error in the system and I was marked as a "No Show" and the doctor has left and that we cannot help you today, but we can get you in as soon as possible. As frustrated and as angry as I was, I acknowledged that the last thing to do would be to yell at anyone because that doesn't resolve anything especially my ongoing health issues. The worst part about this is, it's been two months now since my first appointment, and I haven't been able to live a normal life for some time because of hemorrhoids. I have the same issues I have had since the very first week in January and it's just not okay. I leave with more questions every time I leave Wilmington GI and for this to happen, to be treated as if you don't really matter just plain is not ethical. I haven't "no showed" to anything in my life, I'm 27 years old and know what it means to be held accountable, to be responsible, to take care of people who you are supposed to take care of, and I hope the treatment other patients received and will receive in the future is tenfold better than what has happened to me. I am at the point where I will never go back here, and I pray that I can find another GI place here in Wilmington or surrounding areas that can help me with my issues in the very near future. After the past two years we have been told to trust medical professionals and I still very much so do but after my experience with Wilmington GI and the money, time and stress I have been through these past two months, I completely understand why there is a hesitancy towards the profession. I will reach out to my Family Physician on Monday with my story, and I hope it will make him think twice before referring his patients to Wilmington GI. This is the first review I have ever written for anything because I'm a really simple human, but I felt that my story should be heard because this has been the hardest two months of my life and I just pray that better days are to come. read more

Dr. Henihan did a colonoscopy for my stepfather quite a while ago now and it was a disaster. I won't go into the details as it would take too long here but there were complications from the procedure. When we complained, the doctor wouldn't see him again. We had to go elsewhere in another town before we finally found out what he did wrong. read more

Do yourself a favor and skip PA Dara, waited a good 40 mins in exam room, when she showed up, she half A$$ed the exam and looked bothered and in hurry to answer my questions, wanted to skip part of the exam but I insisted that she does it, she asked what I took before and copied the prescription, that was all she did! Didn't give me any instructions on what to do after exam was done, no one did, I was left in the room for a while and I left without prescription, very unprofessional! read more

Received a bill 15 MONTHS after the actual service preformed. I can no longer submit the payment due amount to my flex spending account due to their error in sending the invoice to me so late. When I called, they were unwilling to give any sort of discount, only suggest a payment plan. So, their error now becomes my responsibility. I DO NOT recommend this practice. This facility does not follow correct medical coding guidelines. I needed to schedule a surveillance screening colonoscopy 5 years after my initial screening revealed polyps. I knew if the exam was coded correctly, it would qualify to be covered at 100% per ACA mandates for colon cancer screening. (I was a Certified Professional Coder (CPC) for over 10 years.) However, this place stated it would be considered diagnostic (even though I have NO SYMPTOMS and my PCP agreed that it should be coded as screening)! It would have cost me over $1000 out of pocket. Glad I asked first! Won't be going there - EVER. read more

This is a large and sometimes crowded practice. I've noticed errors in my billing (colonoscopy prep when I didnt have a colonoscopy) but the charges were removed. I don't like seeing the Physician Assistants but I understand why the doctor cant always see patients. I feel that Dr King is knowledgeable. read more

I have been a patient of Dr. Kittinger since 1989.I cannot complain because I have gotten the best care ever! I am dreading his retirement! He is an excellent doctor! I will miss his wonderful bedside manner! read more

The doctors here show no care or compassion for the pain their patients are in. Seems like they only care to continuously schedule follow up appointments and colonoscopy's to rack in the money. Waited 3 months for the first appointment. Had a follow up a month later where they didn't even look at my issue to see if what they had prescribed helped. Just said the next steps to treating my problem is a colonoscopy. Waited another 2 months for that appointment only to come out of the procedure and be told nothing was done to fix my issue. But yet again they wanted to schedule a follow up appointment... so here I am 6 months later, out thousands of dollars, still having the same problem, in constant severe pain, and the only solution is to "schedule a follow up appointment, with the first available appointment being in 4 weeks". I feel deceived and taken advantage of. Do yourself a favor and find a more competent doctor that actual cares for their patients and your quality of life because this place does not. read more

There are details that I will NOT go into here, but suffice it to say that the staff here is always friendly and make what is a rather embarrassing episode almost feel welcome. Since moving to the area, Dr. Klein has been my go-to guy for either upper or lower ('nuff said!) and the thoroughness of the exam and follow up give me a peace of mind that is very welcome. The worst part of either is the prep, but the way that this practice handles it makes it less onerous than others I have gone to when living in the Triangle. My annual trip there is not exactly something I look forward to, but I dread much less. Kudos to Dr. Klein and his team! read more
