I won't call it a bodega. It's a small Colombia shop under the tracks on 31st. A nice local shop for what I would say is fairly authentic Colombian food. Pros: One of those classic places where you pick what you want, it's in trays so you can see what you're getting. If you speak Spanish, you'll get along great. But they try their best to work with you - extra patient! Authentic ingredients, including a reddish plantain and yuca in my soup. My friend had delicious onions with his bistec. All at a great price. Cons: Not much space to sit. Food was rather deceptive - the oxtail soup may have been beef based, or else it wasn't oxtail soup because there was no meet to be seen. I should have chosen the chicken soup. But I don't speak Spanish, so I didn't know how to ask what was in it. Also, between the street noise outside and the music inside, I could barely hear anything related to answering what I wanted with my meal. Verdict: I am giving this 4 stars in no small part to counteract the people who think they are being cheated for not knowing Spanish. I am quite sure I got the same quality food and good treatment as anyone else. I value the authenticity of places like this. But I recommend coming with someone who can help translate. read more

Hole in the Wall Colombian bakery/hot food place right beneath the last stop of the N/W train. A large variety of baked goods and hot food. Yesterday, they had barbequed chicken, yellow and white rice, some kind of soup and chicharrones and some baked chicken leg quarters. You can order a small or large piece of carne asada that but you have to ask specifically. I only knew about it because I saw it on Grubhub. I ended up having to show to them to get my beef lol. Very disappointed in the way I was treated today. I've been here a couple times before and felt very welcomed. Today, however, I was definitely discriminated against because I don't speak Spanish. My Spanish is terrible so I ordered in English, which clearly the older woman working wasn't happy with. She then yelled in my face about a card minimum. I used to like going her but I will not be back and I will be telling everyone I know. It was my first and last time ever getting food from here. I enjoyed the Colombian soda & juices. Their chorizo I asked to be fried more but it was barely refried! I also ordered an empanada de carne & 1 bunuelo. Sad to say the empanada was the worst I've ever had, barely any taste & it was so hard! You know its authentic when one of the cashiers could barely speak English and the main clientele is all speaking Spanish! I tried the chicken and beef empanadas, the pandebonos (cheese bread), and the arroz con leche (sweet rice pudding), and everything was so delicious! I've actually never had Colombian style empanadas before and now I'm hooked. I'm used to seeing empanadas made with more of a pastry-like dough, but these were made with a light crispy cornmeal batter and then stuffed with a tasty mixture of shredded meat and mashed potatoes. This is a review of only their two baked empanadas (beef and chicken). They were slightly a bigger size than the normal empanadas im used to. The chicken was a bit dry and consisted of mostly shredded chicken. The beef I believe consisted of ground beef, olives, and raisins. Although the menu said $1.75 for these "large" empanadas, I was charged $2 each for them. I didnt realize until I took their menu home. I wouldn't go here again seeing as they seem to charge people different prices and thats unfair to customers. read more

I order here a lot from Grubhub. 1st issue they constantly forget my order and when I called to let them know I had to drive to the store to pick it up they wouldn't deliver it. 2nd issue they never call to say they run out of things they just replace it with whatever else they have. I've stopped ordering a certain amount of pastries because when they don't have they add whatever amount they have and add anything else without calling to at least give me an option of what I WANT Lastly they never put enough sauce for the empanadas. I usually order about 6 empanadas and they'll literally add one small 1oz little cup of sauce or sometimes I get none. I just paid $5.50 for a small soup. The sancocho de res which is basically beef stew and then they tried to give it to me with no beef in it: just two potatos. This is a small bakery and restaurant, right under the NW Ditmars subway stop. The space is small, with 2 two-seater tables and about 8 stools at the counter. It's well-lit and comes across a bit like a mini cafeteria. Their front display features two dozen different pastries and breads. I tried the raisin roll, and it was pleasantly, but not overwhelmingly, sweet. The back display features their dinner options. Every day, they seem to offer 3 entrees (meats) and 3-4 sides, and you can get a large plate of them made up. Portion size is large. The beef and chicken empanadas had a good flavor, but no meat AT ALL ! They were stuffed with potatoes, perhaps 95%potatoes and 5% the flavor of meat. I have been coming here since they opened, I love the fact that they are open 24hrs. Food is good and prices are decent for Astoria. However, the customer service is horrendous, I hope the owner teaches these employees the meaning of customer services. I have been in the industry and I always have respect for food industry employees and know the importance of tipping. My 12 years old had breakfast and got a sandwich to go for lunch and somehow the sandwich was either thrown out or stolen and when he told the counter lady, she said there is nothing I can do. I understand it is not her responsibility but it did happened inside the restaurant, you have a kid with no lunch in front of you and you can just grab another bread with a slice of cheese and ham and give it to the kid so he would not be hungry the rest of day. But i guess this restaurant will go broke after that sandwich. I hope they practice better customer service in the future. read more
