Raices was and still is the place where I would drop by for a happy hour, hang out with family on the weekend, or a quick lunch. This place has the BEST Ceviche and signature drinks. My favorite signature drink was actually called Raices. During the weekend and on special sporting events this place will get crowded. Especially, during happy hour. They have a great happy hour and selection. The bartenders and staff are very sweet and humble. The location is great size. They do cater to birthdays and special events. Days ago I celebrated my birthday in this restaurant. I have become a regular for all good reasons you can think about, but my birthday was out of this world! Honestly, we were a group of over 20 people: employees at Raices do know what Customer Service means. You will also eat the best Colombian food in NY. The restaurant is big but cozy, what makes it perfect for events, and is beautifully decorated. And the music? Wow! we were so lucky to have a great singer and an amazing dj that night (salsa, merengue, bachata, vallenato, all Latin rhytms), we danced the night away! There was no wait time, my dad and I got immediately seated. They have small bar and outdoor seating available as well. I ordered myself chicken while my dad got shrimp. He wanted yuca Frita instead of tostones but the waitress informed us that would be an additional charge so we didn't do that- That being said, the food was delicious, I just wish the staff was more attentive. Came here with a moderate-sized group on a Friday evening and was surprised to see literally no one else inside for dinner. Before getting seated, the hostess let us know they temporarily did not have their liquor license, and we could not bring in alcohol either (odd but fine enough). Between the seven of us, tried all sorts of dishes: Empanadas de Carne ($5.50) - six well fried patties with tender meat inside Empanadas de Pollo ($5.50) - not as juicy as the carne option Cazuelita Morcilla ($13.95) - fantastic blood sausage casserole, balanced Lengua a la Criolla ($21.50) - thick cow tongue with rice and beans, would have preferred this diced into a meal Camarones al Ajillo ($24) - shrimp in garlic sauce, good flavors and large pieces Tostones Guacamole ($12.95) - basic guac and tostones, could have used more salt Arepa con Queso ($4.75) - fresh arepas topped with a block of cheese, needed some hot sauce for more of a kick Chicharron con Arepa ($4.95) - better than the cheese option, more flavor Bandeja Tipica Antioquena ($16.95) - meat platter with eggs and plantains, a bit overly fried but definitely a filling amount of food. Our waitress Olivia C was the best server I've ever had. She was very kind and hospitable, checked on us often but wasn't overbearing. It was a packed house but she made sure to take care of us on little requests like extra limes while bringing out platters of food to larger tables. Very quick and prompt we never had to wait for anything. The bussers were also very friendly and took away the excess off our tables anytime we needed space. The entrees were better than the appetizers for sure. They're huge portions so I would maybe even skip apps. The empanadas were greasy and lacked flavor, ceviche too sweet, but the chicken with mushroom sauce was delicious. Margarita was extremely salty/sour without the rim. Not sure what happened there. I have never been here before but I noticed they had cazuela de morcilla on the menu which sounded quite interesting. I actually like blood sausage and this dish comes with potatoes in a cheese sauce. Sounds pretty good and it was actually quite delicious. Melted cheese over baby potatoes? Yum. I could still taste the morcilla even covered in all that cheese. Also had their typical bandeja paisa. The egg wasn't overcooked like most restaurants, it was just a touch runny. The platter doesn't have as much rice which is a bit disappointing since I do love my rice but other than that everything was pretty good. The avocado was wrapped separately from the food so it didn't get heated up in all that steam so it tasted fresh. Update: My second time wasn't anywhere as good. Avocado was old, maybe precut for too long. Beans weren't as good. Just didn't have the same experience as my initial visit. For my bandeja the frijoles were watery and the chorizo was supermarket variety. Chicharrón was the saving grace thus the two star review. The paella was overloaded with pork and light on seafood, which threw off taste balance. The worst part of this place is the blaring loud music the DJ plays. We asked them to turn it down to no avail. Loud music is so disruptive to eating a meal. There were 2 servers for a crowded place so the service was sparse, one hour to get our meal served! Following my initial review Raices had improved and we actually spent a lot of Friday nights there with nice music and good food and good drinks. Unfortunately the pandemic hit and like a lot of establishments they took a hit first with a liquor license suspension and than with absence of clients. Once they recouped their license and people started going out again I looked forward to returning. Whilst the food was good I found that their cocktails were not the same. I thought it was due to a rotation of their bartenders and so on another visit I observed closely that they no longer use "branded" liquor for their cocktails. Instead they use generic liquor. So the cheapest hooch liquor around yet charging upwards of $14 for a cocktail in Queens. I understand inflation but the quality of the cocktails has drastically changed. In speaking with other friends and family that also previously frequented Raices and had returned in recent weeks they also commented that the cocktails were awful. At least they don't use empty brand name bottles and fill them with cheap generic liquor, they just use the generic bottles themselves so they are open about that. But at that price point and to compromise your cocktails like that no thank you. It is a shame because as much as I like the ambience we just cannot get over the fact that the cocktails are just plain BAD. So to management and owners please review this practice because you are doing yourselves more harm than good. It is a shame. If you go STAY AWAY FROM THE COCKTAILS. For now Raices you maintain the two stars. Quality is important and there is no quality with their bar. They show great visuals on their IG but that is not the reality of their bar. Let me preface this review with a public service announcement slant. I've been to this spot 6-7 times over the last 2 years and have generally satisfied with the food and service. While on the $$ side, I get they have to pay rent and staff in a difficult operating environment. Yesterday, I met a few out of town friends at Raices and will not going back unless I have to. While the food and drink were consistent with prior experiences, the prices have gone through the roof. A chicharron appetizer that was $11, 5-6 months ago is now $19. A Tito on the rocks is now $18 vs $10 only a year ago. Here come the kicker - sitting at the bar, they now add 18% to the bill as a tip if your check goes over $200 - no notice no nothing. Plus thats 18% on the check including tax so effectively 20%- WTF? So now as you spend more you get a surcharged, help me with the logic. The bartender apologized and said that's the way the computer is programed. Again, no fault of the staff but ownership should notify customer so they can agree to this new format, before eating. So I don't agree and won't be going back. I know it's tough running a small business but you're in Jackson Height! - know your customers and respect them with some notice. If anyone is interested - kudos to the LGBT element in the restaurant. read more
