I had Brie and she was so sweet from the start! She gave me a hair cut and dyed my hair purple. It was my first time going with a vibrant color like purple, so she walked me through the process and mixed the color until I was happy. The color and cut came out so beautiful!! I took the chance and decided to see her for a hair balayage and curl for a special event this evening. Michelle took such good care of me, she truly values client satisfaction and for that, I appreciate it. Many salons I've gone to in the past always pressured me to add more services or products to the visit. I have wicked curly hair & I wanted to do something VERY different, and went in and asked for a balayage. I brought some pictures. I hadn't been here before but I saw Tania when I got there. She did SUCH a wonderful job with my hair. She was thoughtful about the curls, about the pictures I brought in, and asked questions about my product. When I get my hair cut I almost always have to hop in the shower right after to fix my curls, but I didn't have to today! She did a fabulous job. While the service was kind and quick, and the price ($35) wasn't bad, I don't think I'll be returning. Being someone with curly hair, it is important to me that the person that styles my hair knows how to cut it. My stylist, Katie, was very nice and knows what she's doing when it comes to other types of hair. But (I came in slightly bedraggled and with limp curls after a long flight) no matter how much I insisted that I have proper ringlet-curly hair when it is in its normal state, she continued to refer to my hair as wavy and styled it as such. While the resulting cut was not too bad, it was much shorter than I had wanted, and more than anything it just scared me when she happily announced "Look! No ringlets!" If you have hair that is anything but curly, this is not a bad place to come for a haircut. Steer clear though if you enjoy your curls. read more

I wouldn't have any complaints, if not for the fact that they were talking trash about me while I was getting a haircut! "Ugh, I don't like his face - is he a new customer? He's new right?" I had been going to Pyara in Harvard until my stylists price went up to $95 for a cut....I popped into Dellaria in Davis Sq., nicely situated around the corner from my house, and got an appointment for the next day. He did as I asked, simple trim to clean up my ends while it grows out. I left quite happy. That was a few months ago. I have VERY curly (spool-y actually) and I want it to be longer. ( I have made a lot of bad hair choice in the past and am paying for them now) The ends tend to fry-out during the grow out process. I went in last week to see Michael again. My hair has a bunch of layers and the grow-out has been wacky. Michael cleaned it up, that's all. But, what will make me return to Michael is that since that day 2 people (one in a boot-camp class and one at work) have told me that I look like I lost weight! Another person at a Xmas party said I looked younger and fresher! He cut an inch off my hair...an inch. No one has said boo about my hair, they think I got younger and lost weight. I have recently been on the market for a new hair stylist so figured I'd try dellarias in Davis sq. I was scheduled with Julie H and I am so glad I was! Julie transformed my boring dark brown hair into a beautiful cut with copper balayage. She truly listened to what I was looking for and it is evident that Julie is a perfectionist, because she took the time to be detailed and ensure I was happy with my new do. I've been here twice and experienced friendly service and a good haircut both times. I've made an appointment once and walked in once and never had a problem getting an appointment (as opposed to other places where if you don't book early, it can be impossible to get an after-work cut since they send all their stylists home). The stylists are friendly and experienced, and you don't have to give them a ton of guidance. I really value this since I hardly ever know what I want, beyond something that's no fuss and still able to be pulled into a ponytail. As with all salons, you have to say what you want and stick with it - they'll offer again and again to blow dry your hair at the end of the appointment, even if you don't want the service or the price tag that goes with it. But as long as you're firm, they listen. My wash/trim with some styling was $35, which is on the higher end of what I like to pay (confession: I am cheap when it comes to haircuts), but I feel like I got a good value for this cut and the convenience was worth it. Note: no tips on credit cards, so bring some cash to reward your stylist! read more

I've been having my hair cut by Ashley for over a year now, and she is great! My hair is really unmanageable -- the bottom is curly but the top is some random mixture of straight, wavy, and curly so that every hair goes in a different direction. I always have to blow it dry or it's a mop. So I am not too picky about my haircuts, and have had a variety of stylists in Boston who can do an adequate job. The way Ashley cuts my hair always seems to look good and be relatively easy to style. Given my hair, that's already awesome. But a couple of weeks ago I got married and she offered to style my hair. Our wedding was very chill and I didn't need anything super-crazy, so I went without any idea of what she was going to do with it. I had gotten my hair cut by Ashley a couple of weeks before the wedding and told her that my husband and I were going to have a Viking ceremony (in addition to our regular ceremony). This started us talking about the TV show "The Vikings" which we both watch. So I show up on the morning of my wedding and Ashley has researched Viking hair styles! She does this awesome and totally unique style for me with french braids on both sides (a "half up" do) and curls all around. It was so amazing! Moved here and was tired of traveling to my former salon. Was in Davis Sq one day and walked by and thought why not just check it out? Friendly staff was able to get me a consultation on the spot with Gina. We chatted ad nauseam about my hair. I finally felt comfy enough to book an appointment. Side note: the email and text appointment reminders were very appreciated! (Think you can opt out of those though, if you want.) Appointment one: brows with Erica (awesome--she listened and they look great), and cut with Gina. She did exactly what we'd talked about during my consultation. Appointment two, three months later: Erica--again great (most try to take too much off my pale brow, she "gets" it and leaves me with a nice-looking brow. Gina--again great. This time, I relaxed because we've built a rapport and I trust that when she says an inch, she'll actually only take off an inch. I'd popped into the salon a week prior to this appointment so she could see my hair it's natural state. It was her day off and she happened to be in the salon. Lucky me! She kindly chatted with me about my hair and we decided on a cut. When I went for the appointment, she did what we discussed. Love my hair! Every few years, I donate my hair to locks of love. This year, I cut off 14 inches and went to dellaria to get a stylish hair cut. I was severely disappointed. I explained to my stylist that I have naturally curly hair and that I was hoping to get a nice layered cut (like I have gotten from the dellaria on comm ave). What I got was a rushed, straight across cut that looks terrible. My stylist refused to cut layers and wouldn't even trim my bangs, claiming it wouldn't look good. I am beyond upset and embarrassed with my new haircut. When I spend as much as I did, I expect to like my hair. Now, not only am I unhappy but I also have to pay for someone to fix what dellaria got wrong. read more

I had previously died (and fried) my hair with a box of $10 dye from CVS and my roots were growing out. But Julie came to the rescue - she worked with me closely to understand what I wanted, explained the process, and paid careful attention to the work at hand. My girlfriend and I went in to get haircuts this past weekend. My girlfriend has been going to Dellaria for a long time and never had a bad experience, until this trip. I got my hair done by Michelle and I am pretty happy with the results. My hair was done pretty quick (I have short hair) and it didn't cost too much with my student ID. My girlfriend, however, had Erika, who did not seem to know what she was doing. When she asked for a slight under cut to keep her neck cool in the summer, Erika shaved off a chunk of the back of her hair. Rather than admit that she didn't know what my girlfriend was asking for, she just botched the haircut. In previous trips, my girlfriend has gotten the cut she wanted form other stylists and it has turned out just fine. However, this stylist in particular did not have the experience with this type of cut. read more

Made an appointment with the hair stylist Philip, and I was very disappointed by the experience. He made condescending comments about the texture of my hair throughout the whole experience. I am an African american woman with curly hair, and I was told that the salon does African american hair. He did a good trim/haircut, but didn't even make an effort to blow out and flat iron my hair correctly. He acted like he'd never dealt with curly hair before. read more

I went in for a walk-in on Saturday, as I needed cut and color badly. Fatmah (sp?) squeezed me in in the afternoon. I'm used to trusting hair stylists and am not super good at speaking up for myself when something is going wrong - which resulted in a HUGE mistake this time. I said I was trying to get back to my natural color. Without even asking, she matched the dye to my roots (which are much darker than my true color). In addition, the color she added was even darker than my roots - resulting in an almost black dye job. It totally washed me out. She didn't ask or talk to me about what she was doing at all. Then I asked for a specific cut, and showed her pictures that she barely glanced at. She gave me a half-assed, lopsided generic cut without talking to me about it in a way that was helpful at all. I was in such shock at the end of the appointment I didn't know what to do, but now that I see that the color isn't washing out or lightening at all I want to cry. Jillian has been cutting my hair for almost a year now and she is fantastic!!! She is so personable and friendly, but more importantly is a great hair stylist. I just cut around 8 inches off my hair which was a big, scary step for me. Jill was so patient and understanding with me, told me everything she was doing before she did, and made me relax. I can, and have, given myself better haircuts in front of the bathroom mirror than the one that I got at Dellaria from a stylist named Erica. In fact, when I got home and inspected the 'cut in the mirror, I immediately noticed a long strand of hair in the back that her scissors had somehow missed. If I saw this at first glance, how is it possible that she didn't? The second thing I noticed was that the part that she'd made down the center of my scalp, which I always request prior to the beginning of a haircut, wasn't even straight. I wouldn't even leave the house with a part that crooked! There was also a chunk of hair at my neck that was longer than the rest, that I trimmed on my own, in an effort to make it the same length as the rest of the hair. She made the comment that "we can always go shorter" during our conversation about how much I wanted taken off, but ended up cutting it about as short as it could be and still be considered to be something in the bob category, which is what I'd asked her for. I wasn't unhappy with the length, just puzzled by the fact that her actions ended up contradicting her words. During the standard hairdresser-customer, what-kinds-of-products-do-you-use conversation, I told her that I'd recently finished a bottle of Living Proof's Full shampoo, had found it to be incredibly dehydrating, not bodifying or volumizing at all, and couldn't understand what I was missing that had induced a lot of people to give it positive reviews. She responded by defending the product, saying that "it adds texture." Well, yeah, if by texture you mean turning smooth strands of hair into ones that look like the "before" images in shampoo and conditioner commercials. Why would anyone purchase a shampoo that seems to cause the deterioration of the hair shaft? I wish that salons would tell their employees not to speculate about the chemistry of products, as most of them don't have the education necessary to understand it. And, in fairness to them, a lot of the terminology used by hair product manufacturers seems to be based on a pseudo-science that assumes consumers are ignorant and easily bedazzled by phrases such as "interlock protein network" (which I chose as an example because it appears on the bottle of Redken All Soft Heavy Cream that I own). The best part? Dellaria charged me $40 for this haircut, which took a grand total of 24 minutes, from the time that I walked in the door to the moment that I stepped back outside and looked at the clock on my phone. I can get a haircut of similarly poor quality for half of that price at any SuperCuts. (Yes, there was a time, before I quit a job at which I was treated badly, when I could afford to get my hair cut and highlighted at classier places. I haven't always been a SuperCuts girl.) I was hoping that Dellaria, which I believe is a local chain, would be a step up from SuperCuts. I was willing to pay a bit more for a better haircut. This is so bad that it seems like some kind of cruel joke. As I was leaving the salon, the woman at the front desk said, "We'll call you." I wasn't sure what she meant. While walking home, it occurred to me that this might be one of those salons that has clients return after a haircut or color to have it do a final cleanup of the new 'do after it's had a few days to "settle." But I know of no salon that does that these days. I didn't receive a call or voicemail from them, but I also severed ties with my cellular service provider, Credo Mobile, at around that time, because it overcharged me. The silliest part is that I tipped her. It's a horrible habit that my mother taught me, and, following this experience, one that I've ceased to practice. Tip following the second visit, maybe--if you decide that the quality of the first cut warrants a second visit. But don't feel obligated to tip if you're not yet sure that you're satisfied enough with the hairdresser's work that you'd opt to have him or her cut your hair again. read more

I give Dellaria Salon a 2 star review due to the fact that my cut looks nice. But my hair is easy. Bone straight, smooth, natural, untreated and won't tangle easily. So if you mess that up, there are some major issues. My first problem with Dellaria was my stylist. I was a walk in, and fully expecting to have to wait, but told the receptionist I would like the first available time for a cut and blow dry. She told me a stylist had just stepped out but would be back in 20 min. I said that was fine, had a seat and grabbed a magazine. When Erica, my stylist, arrived, she stomped noisily into the salon (visibly irritated). She eventually came over to me to begin the appointment. A few minutes into the shampoo, she loudly announced to the receptionist to not schedule any more appointments for her for the rest of the day - extremely rude and unprofessional. She barely said a word to me the entire time except to ask if the cut was to my liking - a good stylist will at least make some meaningless small talk to fill an awkward silence. The brushes used were also unsanitary - I saw a good amount of hair in the brush used to blow dry my hair. Will not be returning. read more

SO disappointed. I've been to Dellaria's in other locations and I was excited to find one near me in Davis Sq. I should have listened to my gut and left after the "stylist" (Meggie? Maggie?) washed my hair and asked me if I colored it and, when I answered yes, said in her most disgusted tone of voice. "I can tell because of the texture." It was so rude my jaw dropped! She spent the next 1.5 hours chipping into my hair. Now my hair is super easy - it's long, straight, a few angles, nothing crazy. She chopped off way more than I requested, gave me about 12 dozen different layers that I hadn't asked for, and still managed to leave some spots strangely blunt-cut. It was also completely uneven, one side totally longer than the other. To top it off, she said maybe 3 more words to me the rest of the time. I took pictures but can't bring myself to post them, so just take my word for it: avoid this place! read more

Ok - Usually I'd wait a day or two to write about a hair experience. But, I'm SO impressed with my visit to Dellaria Davis tonight... Called this afternoon and booked a 6PM appointment tonight (!) with Kathryn. The salon was empty, but the receptionist was really sweet and friendly. Kathryn is A.M.A.Z.I.N.G. She's a relatively new stylist, but don't let that fool you. She listened to my spiel and came up with a plan and executed it beautifully. I'm blown away by the transformation she was able to achieve (in a short time, for not much $) and her positive attitude/persona. I would recommend her to anyone...cut and color (and conversation:). Varied service depending on who you have assist you/who is working at the front desk. Sort of a smaller representation of everyday life: there's good and bad in everything. Called up to make an appt for highlights- first time getting them done. I spoke to a lady who was seemingly disinterested in explaining the difference/what would be best for first time. When I got to the salon, I had a stylist who was late meeting me. I got there five minutes ahead and it was suggested I go get a coffee. DIFFERENT. I get back- the stylist was another ten minutes before meeting me. She was not on the floor but in the back room. I tried to stay positive. Let's just say that she and I weren't a good fit. I tried to make a bit of conversation here or there but it fell flat. When using a foil on the front part of my hair- (and no, am not kidding on this) she set the foil on my nose and used it as a resting place to brush on the dye. Wacky!!!! No apologies- nothing. Not going to call the person out- but her personality is different. Imagine my surprise when I got to the cashier and was asked to swipe my card for $189.00 big ones!!!! I turned bright pink and slowly handed off my card while trying to comprehend the cost. She did not even blow dry my hair!!! I was definitely shocked. My fault for not asking beforehand though. Shoot forward to later when my hair dried and this lady totally missed the mark. So- why is Dellaria getting 4 stars? I called the next day and sheepishly told my sorry story and let them know I wasn't too excited about my new ash-like hair color. They had me come in for a color correction the same eve. Looked great when finished and the girl I had "meggie" was great. Because I apparently like playing Russian Roulette with hair salons- went back to have my hair cut. Awesome experience with Julie!! Great cut. She's only there Monday and Tuesday but she is amazing and my final price for cut/style was $44. Totally different experience from the first time. read more

I have had my hair cut and highlighted by Michelle three times now, and each time she did not disappoint (see photos of my hair from today)! Michelle is a professional stylist, who takes pride in her work, and is always honest about what color/cut will look beautiful on me (she takes skin tone and eye color into consideration, which, for us women, are the two most important attributes when it comes to hair color). I can't say enough great things about Michelle, and the others at Dellaria. I've lived in the Boston area for several years now, searching - unsuccessfully - for a competent and honest stylist. My search ended when I went to see Michael at Dellaria in Davis Square. He is fantastic! I went to the salon for the first time (after reading some reviews on Yelp) this spring. Prior to my visit, I'd gone to a pricey salon on Newbury Street and received possibly the worst haircut I'd ever had. Michael expertly fixed the cut, listening carefully to what I was hoping to achieve and taking time to do the job well. I was also unhappy with the way my hair had been highlighted. As we talked, Michael made some incredibly knowledgeable observations about the color, so I scheduled another appointment with him for some "corrective" color. I wanted to get rid of the highlights and go back to my natural color without waiting for the highlights to grow out. Michael did an amazing job with the whole process! I appreciated the time he took to explain the process to me and to work with me in order to insure that I would be happy with the results (which I have been!). Since making Michael my stylist, I have received more compliments on my hair than ever before and I have more success styling the cuts on my own without much fuss. Friendly and easy to get a walk-in, but this is hands-down the worst haircut I've ever had. I went in to give my growing-out hair some shape on its way back to long because it was getting to the point at which I had to wear it up. Basically, I wanted a wearable bob after last year's pixie, which I couldn't maintain. I'm admittedly a hard case because I don't blow-dry my hair and don't use product in it, but if the shape is good, I never have problems with the "messy look," long or short. It now looks worse than when I went in, meaning that the guy who cut my hair couldn't even manage a basic trim / reshape for the in-between phase. I asked him for a wearable bob and I got something that doesn't even look good up anymore because it's all choppy and, worst of all, the back is still longer than the front, which was the first thing I asked him to change!! The only reason I would go back would be to ask them to fix this somehow so that I don't have to go spend $50 at another place. But I think I won't bother. read more
