Ok ladies, Michelle is the best stylist ever! I shaved my head several years ago now, and when I moved to Waltham it was growing back poof-ball style--Michelle saved me. I have talked to a lot of people who feel that there is just no way to grow your hair gracefully out if you cut it short and want it to grow long again. We all have to go through those "awkward middle phases" right? Wrong! Michelle kept my hair gorgeous at every stage--and for bargain prices, I couldn't believe my luck. Ever since I started getting my hair done by her I get endless streams of compliments on my hair, seriously. Other hair stylists ask me where I get my hair done, and I don't even have the heart to tell them she only has to touch me up one or two times a year now, and my hair is well past my shoulders by now. How I wish I could move her to San Francisco--now I only get my hair cut twice a year or so when I return to Boston for a visit. Seriously, I would rather have my hair cut once a year than go to anyone else. The miracle is--she cuts it so well I don't even have to because it grows in so beautifully! As for the salon itself, it's fine, nothing super special--no free cappuccinos or anything, but at these prices you could afford 10 cappuccinos after. Parking is easy, and they have great hours. Another 5 star review for Hair's Evelyn. Every stylist I've ever had here has been fabulous. It's a little pricey for the 'burbs ($40 for a basic trim and blow-dry) but it's worth every penny. I am always happy with my hair immediately leaving the salon and I stay happy with it for several months. The stylists are really good about listening to you and not doing anything you don't tell them to, but if you're pretty clueless about hair (like me) they will also use their expertise to give you a cut that looks great. My hair has been pretty limp lately. My curly hair was starting to take the shape of a mop. You know it was flat on top and then sticks out near the ends. My last haircut was almost a year ago and all those layers were gone and my hair was all one length. It wasn't looking good. I couldn't get it to have any body near the roots. So decided it was time for a hair cut again. I'm really hesitant about having my hair cut. My moms been the only person to trim my ends my whole life except for last year when I got my first salon haircut that I loved when my hair was straight but made me look like a poodle when my hair was curly. I wear my hair curly about 80% of the time so I needed to find someone who specialized in curly hair. And then I found Michelle. She was listed on the devaconcepts.com website for being trained on how to do DEVA haircuts. I was her last appointment of the day but Michelle was still super nice and accommodating. She completely listened to what I had to say. I only wanted a few layers on top because I wanted to keep my length. I also told her I had the Brazilian Keratin in my hair so she was careful to not cut too much because the Keratin was slowly wearing off. She gave me some great tips on how to get more volume and gave me a fair price on the haircut because she really didn't cut much. It came out great. My hair curled better on the spot and it had more volume. I'm going back in a few months when all the Keratin is gone from my hair so she can take a good look at it and see where we can go from there. Michelle is great. She really knows her stuff and was super nice. Oh and did I mention that she cut my hair DRY. This way she could see exactly how each curl fell because some parts of my hair curl more than others. The ONLY reason I've been going to Hair's Evelyn is for Michelle. My prayers have been answered now that she is leaving the salon and going elsewhere. This place is great if you want to sit around listening to Evelyn gab on and on with all the townies that come in for hair cuts. Over the past twenty five years that I lived in the Boston area, it has been a journey for a curly-hair girl to find stylists who can truly cut curly hair. I have had my hair cut in fancy salons on Newbury Street, Cambridge, and then to the suburbs of Concord and Acton. A lot of money was spent with many dissatisfying haircuts and frustration. These salons will tell you they have someone who knows how to cut curly hair but in most cases not really--just a way to get your business. I decided to look for salons via DevaCurl, the company and salons that focus on curly hair to find a salon and a stylist name. I then narrowed my search to Yelp! to see reviews for "Hairs Evelyn" in Waltham and it had unanimous rave reviews for all stylists. For me, it led to Michelle who finally gave me a "curly hair girl haircut." Michelle knows her expertise and is also a student with a desire to know more about her profession and develop into the great hair stylist she is. She spent time talking with me about my hair and experience and made suggestions along with a great haircut. Hair's Evelyn is also a friendly, down-to earth salon - no pretense like the pricier salons in the Greater Boston area. Eclectic environment with pics of Audrey Hepburn and Marilyn Monroe adorning the walls with stylish lighting in the windows. I had Michelle, and while she had skill, I mentioned to her that I wanted to keep the thickness of my long black hair, but needed to get the dead ends trimmed off. She proceeded to thin out my hair and left me a little dissatisfied. On the flip side, she was super nice, and the place was clean and convenient to get to. However, several months later after many attempts to get someone on the phone to make another appointment, I left a message on the machine to have someone call me back. I never heard from them. Okay, so when I first moved to Waltham, I needed a place to go and someone recommended this place to me. I had long, naturally curly hair and I was hooked up with Michelle. She did do a good job at first. I told her I was looking to cut my hair short and she said she would never do it. Well, I cut my hair anyway and when I went back for a clean up, she basically ignored me the entire time she cut my hair. My hairdresser has never been my therapist, but seriously, the only thing she said was that she's gotten her fix out of short hair because I came in. Well, needless to say, the next time I needed a clean up I didn't go back. I don't really think she knows how to cut short hair because she completely butchered my hair. I haven't gone to get a professional haircut in over a year and I was seriously in need of one. I have long, thick hair that was pretty much all one length and looking really frumpy. I put my trust in Michelle and walked out today with an incredible haircut. She blended my layers and did exactly what I asked for. She really paid attention to how I wanted my hair to look and fine-tuned the haircut once she dried it so I walked out happy. I will absolutely be a regular of Michelle from now on. Evelyn cut my hair back in Feb/Mar 09 and did a great job, charged me $40 bucks though... then because I thought she did such a great job I went back, and the new girl Mary cut my hair, still awesome job! And I tried something new and different and she did great!! She charged me $35, so I felt a little ripped off the first time around, either way they both did a great job, definitely recommended!! read more

I went to Hilda for a partial high light this past Friday. The outside of the salon isn't impressive, and inside is so-so, not schwanky, but clean and neat. Hilda is a nice, calm, confident presence. She formerly worked for Aveda, and set up independently at Hair's Evelyn a year ago. As a side note, all of the women working at Hair's Evelyn were super nice. Hilda had a cancellation, so I was able to schedule a same-day appointment. She uses Wella color. Pricing is a la carte; $100 for a partial high light, and $35 for a blow dry. I'm happy with my color, and received compliments. You can tip on the credit card. read more

New here to Waltham, I was a little nervous finding a new hairdresser. A friend has suggested I get an appointment with this beauty parlor. I called around 9am And got an appointment for 2pm with Evelyn. She is so upbeat and seriously just an all around beautiful person. Evelyn too the time to listen to what I wanted done to my hair. First time at Hair's Evelyn today, got a trim, blow-dry and flat iron. Ashley was my stylist - she was friendly and efficient - I was in and out in under an hour. My hair looks terrific, and the price was reasonable. The lady in the chair next to me was more adventurous, getting color and highlights and a FANTASTIC bob cut, shorter in the back and longer in the front. It was a terrific cut AND a great color job. This place shouldn't even get one star. HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE. The owner doesn't even listen to what you want she does what she wants. I gave her a picture of an updo and she said no problem. Well, I couldn't believe what she did. I am 35 years old and when I walked out of there I looked 100 with dark hair. My husband was shocked and so wasn't I. The first thing I did when I got home was to take it all apart. She also had the nerve to ask for her tip. I thought the owner of an establishment is not suppose to get a tip. I have searched high and low for a salon that understood curly hair. I even got to the point where I was trimming my own! {gasp!} I know. I work nearby so I thought, after reading about them on Yelp, I'd give it a shot. I cannot express how much I love this place. Ashley has been my stylist since I've started going there a couple of years ago, and I absolutely love her! She's personable, charming, and most of all totally gets how I want my hair. I have never been so happy with a salon in all of my 30 years of awkward curly hair. If you want a snooty Newton area salon, you may not quite fit in.
