Gianni is getting love from my whole family and we are smitten.

I adopted Gianni, a dog who had been cared for almost a year. He's a beautiful, mellow, affectionate Pitbull and Mastiff breed. The crew at DHS were so warm and friendly. They were so excited when I said Gianni is my choice.

Never thought a humane society would suggest to go to a pet store for a pet when we came here to adopt.

When we first arrived there, we noticed how peaceful the place was - none of the incessant barking that you encounter at the local shelter. Their grounds were well maintained. We were told the dogs are let out to run in the yard for 3 hours a day. Their website has a bio on each pet so you can read a background info on each one. Obviously when it's an owner surrender they have more information on the pet, less so if the pet was a stray. But even then, they observe them while at the shelter to give you an idea what to expect. Their system makes it easy to adopt. I recommend sending an application in to get approved first. Once you've been approved, just call to make an appointment to see a dog or cat that you would like to meet. They will hold the dog or cat for you until your appointment. This is different from local city shelters where you might see a dog or cat listed online but it might be gone by the time you get there. Their adoption fee ($350) is fair as my dog was already microchipped and his shots were updated, except for rabies. I was a bit surprised that he was released without updating his rabies. All in all, I would recommend PetsNPals to anyone looking to adopt. They definitely care about the pets and try to make their shelter stay as pleasant as possible. Please adopt, don't shop for a pet.

They said they looked and flushed the eye when we picked up but didnt find anything. We kept watching since the eye was off and on squinty and had drainage... finally at two weeks I took him to our local vet, just to be sure it was really ok before turning him loose again... and they found a foxtail!! He had an ulcer on his cornea now as well. I called to let the staff know this development, as they directed me to release the kitten (where he would have slowly lost the eye, very painfully!!!) Well the Executive Director took time to call me back... so I described the situation but to my surprise she was immediately defensive and condescending, referring over and over that 'didn't charge' for their supposed eye exam and treatment... and never once even remotely sounded like she was concerned that the kitten endured this pain and infection nor grateful that I had done the right thing for him, and she ended our shocking call by stating 'I am making a note on your account that you are not satisfied with our services... AND WON'T BE BACK!' Beyond unprofessional!!! DO NOT trust your animals here! They literally defended their recommendation to turn a kitten loose with a foxtail in his eye! This was not buried, they got it out with no problems this morning at the REAL vet! How a business runs, their culture, and their ethical standards trickle down from the top! Clearly the head honcho at APL doesn't give a darn about animal welfare and sure isn't afraid of telling off a customer!

I drove 45 minutes specifically to find Stella & Chewy's stew, which is the only brand my dogs eat. I was actually really excited at first the store is big and has a great selection. However, almost immediately after walking in, I got the feeling that we were being watched. At first I tried to ignore it, but it quickly became obvious that multiple employees were following us around, pretending to stock shelves while staying close to us the entire time. I've worked in asset protection before, so I can recognize that kind of behavior. It made me feel extremely uncomfortable and anxious, especially since I already deal with social anxiety. At one point I even told my mom I wanted to leave because it felt like they thought we were stealing, but we stayed since we didn't drive that far for nothing. When we finally checked out and were leaving, several employees stood near the entrance just staring at us, which made the situation even worse. I've never felt so judged and unwelcome in a store before. What should have been a positive first visit turned into a stressful and upsetting experience. I won't be coming back and will just continue purchasing elsewhere.

As I headed down the side street of auto shops and junkyards mixed in with rundown late 20th century homes I began to brood. I found a spot to park and waited a few minutes until it was closer to my appointment time. Just as I exited my car, I saw a huge, loose German Shepherd walking near the back of my car. I stood and watched as he sauntered westward down Worth Street causing the myriad of dogs along the way, chained in yards and in cages and running loose in yards, to explode in barking, growling, jumping aggression towards him. Think of the Fresh Fish scene in Shawshank redemption. The shepherd was completely unphased. I waited for him to reach California before taking my 15lb dog out of the car. We walked very quickly down the middle of the street to our own chorus of maniacal barking and rushed inside the California Cat and Dog Hospital. When the door closed behind me, I attempted a deep breath of relief but the smell of ammonia, and other unknown and unpleasant odors, began immediately burning my nostrils. My disillusionment was growing rapidly as I walked up to the front counter and gave my name an appointment time. I looked to my left and saw a bulletin board with a photo of Dr. Kim that had a quote from him saying "Every pet that comes into the clinic is my pet!" and I immediately started to feel better. After a few minutes, his son Dr. John brought us back and I explained why we were there and what we needed. I noticed immediately that he was very kind and attentive. He actually physically examined my dog and listened to her chest and back with his stethoscope. He walked us through our options and was instead of presenting us with an estimate listing every fee, he advised us the approximate cost and was willing to be flexible with blood tests and some exams that weren't absolutely necessary at the moment because he understands they can be costly. We decided to to everything he advised regardless of cost and he was able to take our pup in and take care of her. When she started to come out of anesthesia, the staff called us and we were able to get there right away to pick her up. We were very surprised at the affordable cost, even with all the of things that were done. We also asked for pain medication for her and were given a little to take home at no extra cost. We could not have been happier with the care we received at California Dog & Cat Hospital! This place is so great that it was suggested we keep it to ourselves, but there can be no gatekeeping, especially with care like this so I had to write this review. I realize it is lengthy and possibly overly descriptive, but I think it was important because if you are willing to endure the location and the smells, you will be rewarded with gentle, affordable care for your fur babies. P.S. I logged in to write this on Feb 12 and they have updated/notified yelp that they will be closed (Lunar New Year). Most businesses can't even be bothered to put in their correct regular hours on the site so it's just another reminder of the thoughtfulness of the doctors here. I am so happy we found this place.
