While visiting, we booked a lesson with Surf School Santa Cruz, and I'm so glad we did. From the moment we met our instructor, Ryan, he made us feel comfortable and excited to get out on the water. He stayed right by our side the entire time, offering encouragement and guidance that kept us motivated. Learning to surf with Ryan was such an incredible experience--he's not only an amazing teacher but also truly one of the best surfers out there. She loved all the kids and the instructors. I was a bit nervous since my daughter was the youngest, but since the culture of the camp was all love and support - it made it all good. I was apprehensive of my daughter going into the ocean because she is young, the instructors create a plan for each girl depending on where they are at with their comfort with the ocean. Everything is included with the price you pay - wetsuits, boards, booties, pictures to be taken on your phone, etc. Also there were so many nuances and details that we wouldn't have thought about that they took care of like bringing hot water to the beach since there is not hot water with the showers. Here are some of my favorite things about the lesson: - AJ and Mikayla are both extremely knowledgeable about surfing and are happy to share information about the sport and such. Not to mention that they are extremely nice people. - The way they teach you surfing would allow you to go by yourself in subsequent visits to the beach. - Linda Mar waves are actually not crazy in July timeframe so it's a pretty great place to start learning how to surf as a beginner. - The weather is fantastic and makes you very motivated to want to continue to catch the waves. Also, surprisingly, its not too cold since you are in a wetsuit. Would definitely recommend surfing with them if this is your first time surfing. I will also say that I now have more confidence to rent out a surfboard myself and try to practice surfing in the future. The "lesson" part is just the first 15 minutes and afterwards its just practice and waiting for the right wave to hit. Happy I got to have this experience!
