Hi. I had my 2001 18-foot Reinell boat in to have the depth finder replaced; and some other mechanical work to be done as long as it stayed within my clearly-stated budget limit. There were some communication problems with an employee. Once Eric (and Fred) found out about the communication issue, Eric took over and ALL of the issues were quickly resolved and I had my boat back within a few days. Eric even provided some financial credit back to me due to the problems I had encountered. Sometimes in life you run across a person who creates problems with communication and follow-through; that's life. But the way Eric took over and solved all of the issues (and within my stated budget) was remarkable! That's the kind of business I want to work with... If I could leave zero stars, I would. This is the first review I've ever written -- not because I'm one to complain, but because the level of service I received at this shop was unacceptable and needs to be addressed. I brought my boat in to have speakers installed and the gauges repaired, which were not functioning. After a diagnostic, I was advised to replace the impeller. I agreed, thinking it made sense to get everything done while the boat was already in the shop. When I returned to pick up the boat, the total cost was significantly higher than what I was originally quoted -- with no prior communication or explanation. On top of that, the interior of my boat was returned to me in unacceptable condition: oil and grease stains on the carpet and seats, as if there was no regard whatsoever for cleanliness or care. To make matters worse, after using the boat twice, the speakers and amplifier already stopped working. I reached out, hoping for a reasonable conversation about resolving the issue, only to be told it's not covered. No accountability. No effort to make it right. And as a final touch, a cup holder went missing during the installation -- which they also dismissed. If you're looking to overpay, have your boat treated carelessly, and receive subpar workmanship, this is the place. Otherwise, do yourself a favor and take your business elsewhere. read more

Contracted with Eric and Kurt from A1 Marine Transmission to do a repower on my charter boat RIPTIDE in 2022. This was a big contract and required all of there different services. From electrical and electronic, mechanical, fiberglass and painting. Work was on time and on schedule. As with any project of this size there were hiccup's but everything was handled in due course. Went in for a simple part replacement and to look at why speakers were not working , I was talking to , who someone said she was the service manager that one of the boat's batteries were bad after I explained they were new, they tired to walk back what they had said. Lying to try and sale a new battery is simply disgusting. And what was even more disturbing when I got the boat back the tech had written on the battery that it was LOW volt not bad. After checking on why the speakers were not working the tech found that the wire had a issues and that they could run a new one for $800 dollars so expensive , going to take the boat to a stero shop to get fixed, they did replace a part that was bad Overall I felt the tech did a good job but the manager in charge was not trustworthy and very abrasive and just wanted to rip me off ,, it was a very bad experience and after 23 years of boating I thought I had seen it all. Will never go back unless the part they put in fails. Bottom line: don't trust what they tell you. And question everything read more

I took my Parker 2520 to J&H to rebuild the diesel engine that was blown. They figured out the long block needed for the rebuild was no longer made by the manufacturer. I stayed in constant communication with Brent who was coming up with different engine options. We settled on a tier 3 Yanmar LV4 250hp. As the replacement build was taking place, Brent stayed in constant contact with me and gave me daily updates including pictures and videos of what was taking place. Once the build was finished, they cleaned the boat and it was spotless when I picked it up. The day I picked the boat up, it was in the water when I got there. We took it out for a test drive and everything they did was explained in detail. Brent was kind enough to send me the info on what fluids to put in the engine after I left with boat. He even checked up on me later that day when I was out in the boat in another area. This wasn't a cheap project, at least for me, but I would not hesitate to take my boat back to J&H. I took my 38' Sea Ray Aft Cabin with Mercruiser twin engines to J & H to have four things done: The port engine would not exceed 2800 rpm, The dripless couplings were leaking, there was a leak in the galley refrigerator and the alternator needed replacing. Due to a lack of coordination with the boatyard, the bottom was painted and the boat was put back in the water without the dripless couplings being replaced. This was due to Kelsey, the customer relations person, being out sick. I did talk to the maintenance manager about the couplings, he was clueless. Kelsey is the key person for J & H. If she is not there, do not bother with them. Eventually they did repair and replace the couplings. The alternator was correctly replaced. The leak in the galley was ignored. The port engine problem was not solved, although they say they are Mercruiser experts. When I left the boatyard, it ran at over 2800 rpm until just before I reached King Island for fuel. Then the port engine would not exceed 2800 rpm. I limped back to San Rafael, where several mechanics looked at the problem. One of them referred me to H & M Marine in Sausalito. They immediately diagnosed the problem as lack of compression in several cylinders, on the port engine, something that J & H did not test for. I recently had an engine over-heating problem while taking my 36' sloop up the San Joaquin River. With luck we barely made it to Tinsley Island. A few years ago I had a heat-exchanger problem in the same place (should I stay olff that river?). Back then I called J & H and they sent our their super mechanic, Dave, who readily fixed the problem fast, skillfully and cordially. Here I was again in the same place with another engine problem. The boat is 15 years old and its small Volvo diesel has performed flawlessly, including doing the Baja Bash. except for these two incidences on the San Joaquin. On the phone again to J & H, first with Eric, captain of the J & H ship then first-mate Fred who scheduled the mechanic to come out to the Island. They were super busy but managed to squeeze me in and out came Dave again. Was I glad to see him! It was a knotty trouble shooting problem but Dave found the culprit and got me going again. Just another marine service taking advantage. I was charged 3 hours of labor for a 20 minute job. Everybody knows it doesn't take three hours to prime a gasoline engine. I ran out of fuel switched tanks and the starboard engine wouldn't re-start afterwards. I was charged separately for a trip visit, then a $366 charge to do a 20 minute job, they are atrocious. Buyer beware, stay away from J&H Marine! To continue, J&H (Fred) reached out time to see what could be done for me to be happy. I replied that I could walk away feeling less taken advantage of if he were to refund two hours of labor. It has been two weeks and I have not even received the respect of a follow up to negotiate a more positive resolution to our business. In my 61 years of life I have never dealt with anyone more incompetent then Eric Koster. His endless lies and failure to finish a contract to repair my boat engine has gone on for 1 year and 7 months, original contract January 2016. They started on my engine later then he promised and when they did show up it was an all night long project to dismantle the engine, with no sleep, how does a person do this without help from Dr#&s. They then came back with one rookie after another. They bent my shaft on my engine, flooded the engine with diesel fuel, admitted after another mechanic had found the error. I would find another mechanic or do the job yourself as these are no one you want working on your boat. They are uninsured and should not be in the boat business. He refuses to finish the contracted work, so I must finish with another mechanic. read more

Well.. I don't know who this Stephen E. guy is, I do know that I have had a completely different experience! I have had my boat there for the last few months to do a complete rebuild. From the exterior finish, new engines and drives, new wiring, new electronics and appliances, if we didn't replace something I don't know what it was. After having my boat in two different "highly reputable" shops in the Sacramento, and having paid for shoddy and incomplete fixes that they did not seem to be able to find the source of driveline noise...I did some research and decided to tow my boat from Shingle Springs Ca. down to J&H Marine in Stockton. I could not be happier with my experience with them! Lyle heard me out on my view of the problem and had me drop the boat and leave it. Mind you this is a 1979 Bayliner. A boat that has seen a lot of use. By the next day J&H had pressure tested my drive unit, identified the problems, and began correcting them after Lyle let me know the diagnosis and prognosis of the situation. When I picked up the boat and test drove it on the water a few days later it performed...flawlessly! No noise, smooth operation, power on demand. Like a new boat again. And...for a very fair and reasonable cost I might add. Lyle and J& H Marine took very good care of me and my baby and I will be happy to drive the 1-1/2 hours from where I live down to them anytime I need work done on this boat.
