I have extreme dental anxiety and haven't been to the dentist in 11 years. I walked in expecting to need to be sedated for a simple cleaning. Dr Dick asked me to come in to evaluate it, he sat me in the chair and started grinding it down, which made me extremely nervous since I was Lodi g Integrity of the tooth and then he said he wanted to talk to his technician and when he came back, he accused me of lying stating that his technician didn't chop my tooth. Dr Dick is amazing, he is extremely gentle, never rushed when going over a care plan with me and I don't even feel his injections. He graduated from Loma Linda Dental School, which was impressive to me and caused me to choose his office when looking for a new dentist. His cosmetic work is beautiful and he has pictures available for patients to view. His office is beautiful, very high tech and he included a CT scan for free during my initial visit. went in for a cleaning and exam. it cost$1,700 for a deep cleaning and they only spent about 90 minutes with a high pressure water pick. they didn't scrap, floss, or buff my teeth. I am visiting here in ID for two weeks from California, I noticed one of my filling pieces was falling out and so I knew I had to find an office open for walk ins to help with this! I called this office and a nice lady helped me get in quickly. I got examined as a new patient at no cost. And began with the minimal X-rays! (Which I like) less radiation.. I hadn't been to the Dentist in a while and I had a tooth that didn't feel quite right. I don't have insurance so I was very concerned with what a trip to the Dentist would cost me. I got a flyer from Dr. Dicks office in the mail and took advantage of a discount off of X-rays and a cleaning. They make late appointments which is very helpful for my work schedule. My hygienist said my teeth looked very clean considering how long it had been since my last cleaning. She spent about 20 minutes on X-rays but only about 10 minutes cleaning my teeth. Dr. Murdoch came in and performed a very fast exam, maybe two to three minutes. At the end of which he told me I had 9 cavities that he recommended filling. The most serious cavity, which was the tooth that felt weird, he said needed to be addressed right away and he asked if I was up for taking care of it right then. He said it looked like we caught that cavity just in time because it was getting close to the nerve. I could see in the Xray that it was. I told him we might as well get to it and the billing person came in and told me we were looking at $280. As I told her that was fine Dr. Murdoch poked his head back in and said that once he got into that tooth, that he may have to do a root canal. I asked about what that would cost and was quoted $1280 before the crown. I've never had a root canal and I was stressing like crazy about the cost. I went ahead and told them to do it, hoping and praying that it would not turn into a root canal mid procedure. Dr. Murdoch worked on the cavity at a feverish pace. It reminded me of a NASCAR pit crew. I wasn't sure whether that was a good thing or a bad thing. It made me feel uncomfortable because he seemed super rushed and my bill was hovering between $280 and $1280. When he finished he told me it was super deep and that he hoped his filling would get the job done but there was a 50/50 chance I would have issues and still need a root canal. It's been about 8 weeks and so far so good. After my appointment I was really uncomfortable with the speed of diagnosis and the auctioneer like prognosis on each tooth that Dr. Murdoch had relayed to his assistant. I also felt like it was wrong to have me signing consent documents while someone was actively working in my mouth. It felt high pressure and I didn't like that. I talked to my mom about it and told her I was thinking of getting a 2nd opinion. She is a retired RN. She said she felt that would be best. I made an appointment with the Dentist that her and my dad see. I obviously will not mention the name of that dentist. I told the new dentist I was there for a 2nd opinion, but nothing else. He went off the X-rays I had taken at Dr. Dicks just a month earlier. I did not tell him where they were from or who I had seen. I wanted a blind 2nd opinion. He meticulously examined my teeth, carefully checking and rechecking each tooth. I would say he spent a solid 25 minutes and paid extreme attention to detail. At the end he said I had 4 cavities. I asked him what he thought about the "other dentist" saying I had 8 and he was professional and would only say, "I only see 4." The cost for the needed work will be less than half of what I was quoted by Dr. Dick's office. I struggle to trust people on things that are hard to verify. This experience has only made it harder for me to trust people in these situations. These are the facts of my experience. Everyone will need to draw their own conclusion here. I thought it would be important to post this as it might help other people. I don't know what to think for sure. I feel like I was going to get ripped off and I'm certainly not happy about it. When in doubt get a 2nd opinion. I've attached both suggested plans of action. I've redacted my personal info and the info of the Dentist who did the 2nd opinion so that no one thinks I'm trying to drive business in a particular direction. read more

We went there as new patients and were allowed to have a cleaning and exam. Even though both the dentist and the hygienist told us we had excellent home care and there were no problems or issues with our teeth or gums ---they still told us we could not be treated again without agreeing to x-rays. X-rays are a real cash cow for dentists. If enough people stand up and insist they don't want the access radiation for no reason, these dentists will realize it's not in their best interest to bully people into getting x-rays. read more

Let's face it, going to the dentist is probably not at the top of too many peoples lists of favorite things to do but both of these doctors make the experience great every time! I have had A LOT of work performed over the years due to neglect as a younger person and I have never felt like I was being rushed through the visit or overcharged for work needed or performed. The lady that goes over the recommended or needed treatment has always been very clear on what has been suggested or what should be dealt with and what can wait. Let me start by saying Zero covid precautions...and I am not super concerned about it to begin with but it's shocking to see no precautionary measures taken at this time. The bare minimum would be taking temperatures, at least doing a verbal phone screening and or limiting people in the waiting room (which is basic standard of care.) Also there was no use of extra personal protection equipment past the standard... no gowns covering exposed "surgical scrubs", no high level masks and or face shields. The hygienist was good though the dentist was not thorough and barely looked at my x-rays or inside my mouth. As well as couldn't keep his mask above his nose. Inside the office is nice but nobody seems overly happy to be there. And yes I am a patient, I just choose to not use my real name on here for other reasons. read more

On 2 different occasions when going in for a cleaning, I needed an old silver filling removed and either a new filling or crown to replace it. On both occasions they were able to do it same day! As a busy working mom, that helped me out tremendously! The second time, I put them on a time limit and they had me outta there with time to spare. I would give zero stars if there was the option. I had 4 lumineers done in So Cal on my 4 top front teeth.and they turned out perfect. I moved to CDA and Dr. Dick did a root canal for root and was fine. I had him do 2 caps and 2 lumineers on my front bottom teeth. They were Horrible! The color didn't match, they didn't fit right, they looked so fake it was ridiculous! He agreed to replace them but the problem is, the second ones had all the same problems plus the height of the teeth varied, they still didn't fit so his solution is to grind the crap out of them and my good top front teeth trying to get them to fit. I have one that leaks and one that hurts constantly. I asked for my $4000 back as I have to have them redone and he obviously don't know how. He refused and figures the fact they he did them twice as good enough. If you choose to go to Dr Dick for lumineers, I suggest you save your money and get false teeth because that's what they look like when he does them. They say they want you to be happy with their work but clearly they don't really mean that!! read more

Dr Dick is the most gentle dentist I have ever went to. I have been going to him for years. I went in for an implant recently and I have to say I was very nervous but it went really well. The implants are outstanding. The staff is amazing and they always make me feel comfortable. He listens and cares and is very good at what he does. God Bless Kootenai Dental!!! They TRULY care. His office was doing dental work for half price in February and the proceeds went to a local woman at Kootenai Memorial Hospital having dificulty with a brain tumor.
