I wanted to share some feedback regarding our recent visit. We dined on a Wednesday and were the only guests in the restaurant at the time. The soccer game was playing at a very high volume, so we politely asked if it could be lowered slightly. We were told, "No, it is the championship game," which felt dismissive--especially given that there were no other patrons present. Additionally, the interaction felt unnecessarily rude, particularly as it was the owner--not staff--who was the only person sitting at the bar. This is a cute, old school looking bistro on Main Street. We came in for lunch during the week, so it was quiet. The service was okay, not too friendly. We ordered the soup of the day (leek), which was delicious and flavorful. We also ordered the ham and cheese sandwich on a baguette with butter and a side salad, which was very good! Had a lovely lunch with friends. Two of us were familiar with the NYC restaurant. We were greeted warmly by a charming man with a French accent, and seated quickly. Lunch was wonderful! S. loved the escargot, and received extra bread when she asked. R had the pissaladière, and thoroughly enjoyed it. My croque Monsieur was eggy and decadent, and the stone-ground mustard vinaigrette on my salad was delicious! It was actually a light lunch. There isn't much ham or cheese in the sandwich. R's pizza, though, was LOADED with onions. I was almost sorry that I hadn't ordered it. read more

I have often admired the ambience of Demarchelier Bistro when passing by, and we finally decided to go for a late dinner on a quiet/rainy evening. It's worth mentioning that are open (as of summer 2023) 7 days and stay open later than many of the other restaurants in Greenport. We sat outside and the hostess and server were kind and welcoming, including to our dog. There are a few outdoor tables for two that are sheltered from the rain, another rarity in the area. With the small marble tables and bistro chairs, it is like sitting in front of a cafe in Paris, only without the constant barrage of cigarette smoke- hooray! We had the roasted half chicken and the coq au vin (the latter being a special). Both were quite nice, with the chicken being moist and tender in both cases. (They must have a good chicken supplier, methinks.) I particularly loved the gravy on the roasted chicken, which was peppery and contained morels. While the price point is a bit high to be an everyday casual neighborhood dining spot for me, we'll definitely be back from time to time. I can see this simple, high-quality French comfort food becoming even more appealing as the weather cools. read more

There was an utter lack of hospitality or respect for our dining experience by the owner. We walked in for a late lunch and the television was blaring with a sporting event. It was deafening - we could barely conduct a conversation at our table. We asked her to lower the volume before we were seated and she said no - this was the quarterfinals of the event. There were literally two people at the bar, one with earbuds in and us. There are very few other dining options on Wednesday in Greenport in the off-season so we stayed. I asked again for her to lower the volume when play had stopped in between periods and she refused. She then proceeded to sit at the bar and scream, sing and cheer during our meal. We had thought we would be eating at a fine dining establishment, not a noisy sports bar. If she needed to watch this game, she should put a television in the kitchen so her patrons would be able to enjoy a decent meal. The food was delicious, but, although we live in Greenport, we will never be back. read more

Was it a dream? This unpretentious bistro -- round marble tables, long banquet, U-shaped bar -- is unapologetically French in the best possible ways -- as in, *Parisiesnne* French. I and my date were greeted by name and were brought to a table far from the door on this insanely cold, windy late-winter evening. We were given time to de-layer and settle, and were greeted warmly by our server (Parisienne accent of course, but friendly!) Lovely Solene described the special appetizers and entrées not on the old-school plastic-encased printed menu, and she stood serenely as we finalized wine choices, and then entrée choices. Choosing from among the classic selection was . . . challenging. But in a good way. The décor: High ceiling, mustard-yellow walls with serious crown moulding, heirloom black & white photo arrangements everywhere, dark wood bar and trim . . . I expected to find Picasso at one of the tables. We shared the Artichoke Hearts with Goat Cheese appetizer (OMG), and we knew at once we had found the best winter getaway restaurant inGreenport. The bread, impossibly warm/fresh/crusty; course pacing virtuoso. Our entrées -- Duck Confit, and 'Choucroute Garnis' -- were Heavenly, down to the molecular level. Yes friends, in Heaven the chefs are French. Once our table was cleared, with the glow of the wonderful meal still warm, I wondered aloud -- privately to my date -- whether it might be possible to ask for a decaf espresso (and not be ridiculed) . . . And there it was, on the dessert menu: Decaf Espresso!! Was I dreaming this? No, it was real; I have the reasonable American Express receipt to prove it. I'm a little partial to French Bistros due to being first generation French. I also had multiple French Chefs in our family, so i feel I know good quality french cuisine. I thoroughly enjoyed my Prix Fixe Dinner. The Pate was excellent and served with a generous portion of mixed greens with a delightful vinaigrette. Roast beef was my choice of entree and it was tender with a light and tasty sauce. The chocolate moose was a delicious finale. The staff were attentive and the owner, Emily, was a delight. We just had the most disappointing experience at Demarchelier Bistro in Greenport. We ordered appetizers and all were delivered expect two, mine & my husbands. We flagged down the waiter and he told us they would be out shortly, which they were. My husband's entree didn't come out when all the other entrees did. We inquired and there was some discussion with the waiter about what he had ordered. Eventually his entree was delivered by the owner Emily with a glass of wine on the house. When we received the bill, the same glass of wine was on the bill, along with the very late delivered entree. We also were charged for Evian water which we didn't order. My friend approached Emily about these extra charges and she was totally obnoxious about everything. When my friend said, "The customer is always right" Emily said "I don't think so!" I worked in a restaurant in Brooklyn for 10 years as the hostess and nighttime manager. In those days the customer was always right. If I had been in charge I would have eliminated the charge for my husbands very late delivered entree. I would never have agued with a customer about any of the things Emily agued with us about. I will never return to Demarchelier Bistro and I will tell anyone who asks not to go there. Emily was rude, confrontational and altogether inappropriate for a business woman who wants to engage customers rather than alienate them. read more

Sigh. Had high hopes for this place given their long experience on the UES and mostly very traditional French menu (why do they offer fondue? In summer no less!). It seems very promising, dogs allowed outside and a pleasant atmosphere. However I was very disappointed when I finally tried it. This is a classic French restaurant type I recognize from living in France -- the reliably mediocre restaurant that preys on tourists or people desperate enough to eat there because the better places are closed sundays (this is valid for france, not Greenport: many good places in Greenport are open Sundays!). The salads were limp and insipid, topped by a boring over-emulsified vinaigrette that, to be honest, did transport me to days of buying vinaigrette from monoprix. Overall I had the same impression I had when I'd talk myself into visiting a place I knew was just so-so in France. They'd be better off serving warmed up standards from Picard. Sadly I'm afraid the food at Demarchelier might improve if they had access to one. read more

Very disappointing restaurant. We were party of 5. They were nice enough to accommodate us because we arrived 1 hour earlier. But, the food was terrible. It seemed all the plates were microwaved. My snails arrived 2 minutes right after the server submitted our order. The butter melted but not enough time for the parsley and garlic to be cooked. My son's soupe a l'oignon was water down sauce, the 2 melon gazpachos was watery! Everything was like frozen then microwaved! My husband refused to eat cold ossobuco! The food is, at best, mediocre. Of the 7 dishes the four of us sampled only two were palatable, The others were bland, or overcooked, or had poor quality ingredients. Service was adequate, but management, had "lost" our reservation. We were seated only because the place was empty, but when we requested that the music be turned down as we were alone in the restaurant, the front desk refused. Not recommended. read more

Lots of curb appeal and charm. Food was good; not great. Steak tartare and roast chicken were our favorite items. Nice choices for wine and cocktails. They made a delicious espresso martini. Seemed like one waiter was handling all tables (both inside and outside; serving and clearing) and he also seemed to the bartender, so service was a little slow but he was doing his best to keep up. Overall it's a solid 3 in my book, and I'm a tough grader. read more
