Ah, Paris in Springtime.. Reading that brought you to a nice moment? Me too. I would have loved to come to Demarchelier in April, sipping on cocktails outside by the Peconic Bay. I read the Newsday piece about Demarchelier, how the family packed up their fathers restaurant on the Upper East Side of Manhattan and relocated to Greenport. I'm planning out Valentines Day, normally we'd stay in NYC for the weekend but the times we're living in have made our choices limiting so we're stay close to home. I made a reservation and took a beautiful drive out east to Greenport. Located in the chic Menhaden Hotel, the hostess seated us at a nice window table. I quickly glance at a large table with two patrons, I thought that was strange as we're seated. I ordered for my French-Canadian-Brooklyn wife a glass of French Rose wine and I'm feeling celebratory so I ordered a French 75 for myself. I have to admit, my French 75 was "different", is that lavender that gave it that hue? The cocktail choices were limiting, I was expecting more. As for beer, I would have loved to see my favorite French beer Jenlain but I chose Duvel. The Valentine's Day Brunch menu is filled with love! We started with a pate which had us swooning! Sooo good and highly recommended. My wife ordered the Smoked Salmon Plate and I ordered the Croque Monsieur for our Brunch of love. While we're waiting for our food to arrive, my wife is texting me. ?? She texted - Donna Karan is sitting at the table behind us. Seeing celebrities on the south shore is common. On the North Shore is rare, either way, I'm not sharing my pommes frites with her if she decides to stroll around the restaurant. My Croque Monsieur, cutting through the gruyere and béchamel sauce to the ham is one of my simple pleasures. While we're enjoying our brunch meals, I'm hearing the staff in the kitchen and they're laughing. It was the type of laugh from enjoyment. It took me by surprise because honestly, over the past 12 months its been what's missing and something that shouldn't be taken for granted. We had a wonderful meal at Demarcheilier. Escargot and endive salad were great- as well as the bread. The entrees, including swordfish was really good. Desserts were excellent. The service and ambiance were top notch. It's not loud and you can hear people across the table. Just a great evening. read more

After reading about Demarchelier's relocation from NYC to Greenport we were expecting a very good dinner, but apparently their culinary and interpersonal skills did not travel well out east. Demarchelier required a credit card to secure the reservation on Resy even though we were staying at The Menhaden where it's located. Normally that's only required by busy exclusive restaurants so I expected a bustling scene when we arrived. Au contraire, we were one of only two occupied tables. Okay I thought it's a Thursday evening so perhaps things will pick up.....never happened the place remained nearly empty. First we stood awkwardly at the entrance for about 10 minutes, then our haughty server slowly strolled over to seat us. The menu app wasn't working, and instead of bringing over a paper menu or telling us about the short menu our server frowned and tried to bring the menu up on her own phone for another 10 minutes. After failing to complete that task (apparently Demarchelier's site was down at the time), she went outside and slowly schlepped the entire menu board into the restaurant for us to look at - but only after speaking lengthily to a family seated at the outside table. No apologies or smiles, just rude Gallic eye rolling the whole time. Lychee martini priced at $17 was Lilliputian in size and not well balanced. Beer was canned, kinda crass at their price point. Started with an evening special app of mushroom soup, a personal fave so was dismayed when a cup of thick dark brown glop arrived that was as unappetizing to look at as it was to choke down. (Hunger provided the requisite impetus and I was raised in the Clean Plate Club). Our server boldly commented that the chef puts too much pepper in the soup so it wasn't very good, quite right on that point! I chose the coq au vin as my entree, but the server said the chef hadn't marinated the chicken that night (WTF?) so it wasn't available. Wish she had told me that sooner or crossed the item off of the menu board. Decided to go with the hangar steak with shallot sauce instead, big mistake! The meat was gristly, tough, almost raw and covered with a thin sauce like dirty dishwater. Couldn't finish that. Bread was stale and dry. On the plus side, my companion's moules frites were fairly good and his escargot app was good but tiny so grossly overpriced at $17.50. Hence the two stars. This was our first meal in Greenport and one of our worst ever; happily our following dinners were all very good. In the circumstances I do NOT recommend Demarchelier at all. read more

New York City Upper East Side neighborhood French bistro Demarchelier moved after 25 years to Greenport on the North Fork where they have spent the summer as a pop-up at a local boutique hotel. The family are very hands on in ensuring the authenticity of the cuisine and quality of dishes and service. A very pleasant experience to while away the afternoon. A taste of France on Long Island's North Fork! I couldn't imagine that a place such as Demarchelier existed in an area where most eateries offer Italian specialties or American twists on seafood. But it does exist--in the Menhaden Hotel on Front Street, just steps from the Shelter Island Ferry. It was a reason for us to step outside our coronavirus comfort zone. We had not dined out since February. It has been our tradition for the most of the past 40 years to dine on French cuisine to mark our wedding anniversary. The challenge, the result of having a finicky bride, was finding a French eatery with outside dining and duck on the menu. Demarchelier matched the criteria. Demarchelier opened in June after operating for more than 40 years on Manhattan's Upper East Side. Inside, its cozy, but circumstances dictated that we dine on the sidewalk outside the hotel. It was a bit breezy being a block from Peconic Bay. A dozen or so black metal tables were spaced appropriately outside the Menhaden's entryway. The only drawback to dining outside was the occasional car of truck passing by sans muffler. We were greeted cordially by one of the masked staffers after checking in inside then led to our outside table and directed to find the menu via our phone cameras and the laminated QSR code affixed to the table top. The concise menu offered traditional French fare--pate, escargots, moules mariniere, salad Niçoise, filet mignon au poivre, coq au vin and duck a l'orange, to name a few selections. There's also a list of four daily special appetizers and entrees. The wine list is equally simple with about two dozen selections, many offered by the glass. Service was cheery with courses delivered with correct times between them. As for dining, my wife started with an endive, fennel, apple and goat cheese salad, leaving me most of the greens. The duck a l'orange is usually served with green beans but the kitchen readily substituted a pure rendition of mashed potatoes to satisfy my wife's vegetable phobia. The duck, ordered with extra sauce (at an irritating $2.50 upcharge), was well roasted and the sauce was tasty without being cloyingly sweet. Her finale, chocolate mousse topped by homemade Chantilly cream, was gone in an instant. Iwent with the specials, beginning with duck rillettes, a rustic pâté of duck meat poached in its own fat shredded and stored in that fat. It was plated with mesclun, cherry tomatoes, cornichons and good crusty bread. It was a tad dry, but enjoyable nonetheless. For my main I opted for monkfish with lemon and caper sauce piccata-style. Three large, nicely crusted pieces of white, firm fish surrounded a mound of tangy ratatouille. Not a bit was leftover. I finished with a dessert special, crème brullee, a thick vanilla custard with a candy-hardened crust, a big fat strawberry and powered sugar. A perfect ending. read more

What an amazing meal my girlfriend and I had here. My girlfriend speaks French and had a lengthy discussion in that language about the menu, the conclusion of which was a delicious appetizers for the both of us. My girlfriend had the Steak Tartare which I tasted and it was fantastic. I had the meal of the day, a cassoulet that was one of the best I have ever tasted, and I am a cassoulet fanatic. Fresh bread, fresh butter, fresh greens, everything perfectly prepared and served by a professional yet casual French staff. Truly wonderful to be in a fabulous French restaurant -- elegant but not pretentious. I recommend this tremendous find to everyone on the East End. The atmosphere was fine, once they allowed us to sit inside as requested online. The staff was not friendly. The food was sub-par.... from the vegan French onion soup to the beef broth coq au vin and finally to the VERY FISHY lobster pasta (which was sent back). Not at all worth the $500+ we paid. I went for dinner with three friends. The food was spectacular! I had the duck, the best I have had in many years, both crispy outside and moist inside. My partner ordered the pasta carbonara, and it was spectacular. I had a taste of the beef tartare from one of my friends, and again, wonderful. The service was friendly and efficient. Expensive but worth it. So happy to see another fine restaurant open in Greenport! read more

Demarchelier is consistently excellent. It is wonderful to have a unstuffy French restaurant on the North Fork. It has all the requirements of classic bistro, with a great bar and an authentic European design feel. Not to mention a top notch steak frite and strong martini. Let me start my saying the service was very good. The one star goes to the lovely waitress. Now, on to the food. This restaurant is supposed to be a high end French bistro but it is horrid. We ordered oysters that had shards of shell throughout. The muscle wasnt even separated from the shell. Main entree was the burger.... for $21 this burger was DISGUSTING. Over seasoned gray meat that I doubt was beef. No topping choices other than cheese or an avocado slice. Thats it! Tiny shoe string fries that werent even the length of a string accompanied this rotten burger. Each fry was about an inch long... rediculous to try to pick up to eat. McDonalds is better than this. read more

My wife and I live in Greenport, where this restaurant is, and had high hopes for this place. We were very disappointed, however. The fondue we ordered came with the cheese and some liquid (cheese fat or wine?) separated, and, after we sent it back telling the owner herself that this is not acceptable for fondue, that it should be uniform and melted, she said "this is how we do our fondue." Having spent considerable time in Switzerland, my wife and I know what fondue is supposed to be like and this was far from it. We told them they could give it another try but they refused and said this is how they do fondue. Then there is the matter of the wine. We were disappointed by the red wine by the glass we ordered and ordered another wine instead, not having drunk the wine we initially ordered. Well, they charged us for the wine we sent back anyway. No other restaurant in Greenport does this. Bad bad management. Needless to say, we were extremely disappointed (although we tipped 30%) and won't go back. read more

My boyfriend and I came here for our anniversary brunch and it was easily the lowest point of the weekend. We walked in and told the reception we had a 12:00 reservation, they told us to walk into the dining room to be helped. We were the only people there and still had to stand for a few minutes while the manager sat on a laptop and a busboy mopped the floor avoiding eye contact with us. We sat and both ordered the turkey sandwich and on asking if they could add Swiss cheese (they had it in house) server said "You want to put Swiss cheese on it?" and then paused looking at us for about 10 seconds before reluctantly saying "we should". After placing the order we heard staff talking about us and noticed our server coming out of the kitchen with the chef and pointing at us. Shortly after this we heard our server and the manager complaining about the 12pm reservation for Bailey (that's us) not showing up while we were sitting at our table. The sandwiches were extremely bland and were served with hardly-dressed greens on top of being overpriced. I didn't eat my sandwich and the server said she would grab the manager, so we waited and she never came. The server brought our check and then came back asking us to pay. We finally had to ask to speak to the manager to have the charge for it removed. When I said I didn't care for it the manager simply replied "Oh? Well it's one of our best sellers for a long time" before irritatedly grabbing the receipt to finally remove one of the sandwiches from the check. $67 bill for 2 cocktails and 2 sandwiches that would be better from a corner deli. If this is how they treat 2 people in the dining room I can't imagine the treatment and carelessness when they're busy. Not good food and even worse service by the restaurant staff. As my partner and I recognize the hardships currently during COVID I can confidently tell you that we gave them every chance we could. Would not recommend. read more

This was our first time. We were looking forward to having a true. French bistro experience in Greenport. We liked the look and feel of the inside of the restaurant... it looked like many French bistros we have patronized in nyc. The service was very good. The prices were pretty much as we expected, relatively on the high side, but that was ok, if the food was good. Unfortunately, the food was a huge disappointment. I did like my salad and the 1/2 order of the cheese fondue was good. But the bread that came with it was stale... maybe it was supposed to be, but it wasn't good. My husband's dinner of grilled octopus and duck confit was not good. The octopus looked liked it had been grilled awhile ago, was only warm and tasted fishy. And the duck confit was totally dried out and served without any accompaniment. It did come with the little potato balls he ordered as an extra side... but sadly, they had no taste and looked like something from a fast food drive through. Since this was our first time, we want to give this place the benefit of the doubt. But for a meal that was close to $200, including drinks, it's hard to think of going back. read more

The majority of the food is really yummy and the waitstaff is wonderful. We have had wonderful escargot, pate, shrimp and baked Camembert. The French Onion Soup though was the worst we have ever had. The potato leek soup was horrible as well. They both seemed to have a very similar base which just tasted like dirty water, really awful. I cannot imagine how anyone who works there would think that the soups are edible. I would definitely go back and enjoy everything but the soups! read more

Demarchelier was a favorite spot on the UES for years, a lively French bistro. They are in the middle of relocating to Greenport, near the Shelter Island Ferry. The french bistro will be ready this fall. In the meantime they are serving dinner outdoors at the fashionable Menhaden Hotel. The food is authentically French and is delicious. So is the staff! A wonderful experience, if only for their chocolate mousse. The fish soup made me dream of Cannes. The rack of lamb was just right. What a relief if we can't travel to France, it's here on Long Island! read more

I have never gone to the extent of writing a bad review, I just don't go back or recommend the restaurant but tonight's dinner was so bad that I had to write this. I had grilled octopus served with chick peas and pomegranate kernels. The octopus was rubbery and unseasoned, the chick peas were fresh from a can and dumped on the plate with the pomegranate, no taste. The salmon entree must have been frozen for at least a year, dry and tasteless the vedgetable that accompanied it were brown, soggy and tasteless. The osso buco was rubbery and accompanied by soggy undercooked risotto. The duck was grey and might have been microwaved. When we told the manager that we were not happy with our meal, after she inquired whether were were happy, she got nasty and informed us that she had told the chef not to serve the vegetables the way they were prepared. Not once did she apologize for the poor food. The only thing French about the place was the nasty attitude. I do want to clarify that the location we were at was not the one in the hotel although we're were told that it was the same chef. If they don't change the chef they might not last the season. What a waste of my hard earned money! read more
