Asking questions and wanting an explanation qualifies you as difficult to deal with. They are generalist, scope of knowledge is limited as a technician put it, that called me, as she lectured me about my attitude! Surgery was suppose to be done here, good thing is, they referred me elsewhere to control blood pressure that didn't need to be control. Bad thing I paid for something in advance and it was never done, and sure will not admit it and reimburse me!

The interior of the building is very pretty. They have a comfortable waiting area with animal themed tv content playing. The receptionist was very friendly and made us feel welcome. Dr. Durham was gentle and knowledgeable. Her and her tech spent a lot of time with us during the exam. They were thorough and treated my dog with care. The tech was kind enough to educate my husband and I on how to clip our dog's nails ourselves rather than us paying for it. We had routine bloodwork done on a Friday night and I had an email with the results first thing Monday morning. We found the prices to be very reasonable. We feel like our sweet dog is in good hands here. Highly recommend!

He's always been sedated for nail trims -- something we've done before with no issues. They used a method they called the "door technique," where they pulled his leash through a door to corner him for the sedation shot. This time, they pulled way too hard. Kane was visibly distressed -- I told them, "You're strangling him" but they assumed he was tired from the shot. Right after they gave him the shot, Kane collapsed. It didn't look like sedation -- it looked like exhaustion. I said, "He's tired, you guys strangled him " but they brushed it off. Later, while he was sleeping, they proceeded with the check-up. He seemed to be asleep, even snoring. As the vet stepped out and the tech continued cleaning his ears, I saw something change. Kane took two deep breaths and went still. I asked, "Is he breathing?" The technician -- sitting right over him -- hadn't noticed. She checked his pulse, panicked, and called the Doctor. They performed CPR and gave him the reversal shot, but it was too late. They worked on him for about 15 minutes before telling us there was no pulse. We told them to stop Kane had already been through enough. Kane never had any issues with sedation before. What happened was preventable. They failed to listen, failed to monitor him, and failed to act quickly. We left that day without our best friend. Just a bill, and no written explanation of what went wrong, despite asking multiple times. The doctor said " if I would've known he was in distress before giving him the shot I would've never had him sedated. " they failed my baby. I'm sharing this because people need to know. Kane was more than a pet -- he was family he was our protector our best friend our little brother. He deserved better care and more attention. I will never forget what happened that day, and I hope this serves as a reminder to all pet owners: always advocate for your animals, even at the vet's office. Something they also have done quickly is block everyone who have angry reacted to their Facebook post. If this doesnt speak on their character I don't know what else will, but maybe this next part will help some more. Pictured on the post is one of the staff members with her knee on dog after he has been chocked out and given anesthetic. Also video'd is three nurses administering the anesthetic. One chokes the dog out with a prong collar it looks like, something chain. In the video you can hear the dog struggling to breathe greatly and after the shot is administered and he is able to try to catch up on breath, his back legs kick out as he sprawls on the ground, still struggling to breath. Then to add the cherry on top is a receipt totaling to $1,261.90.

It turns out that my fur baby, my other half, had GI and renal lymphoma. About a month after visiting SPH for my cat's lack of appetite, I took her to an animal hospital in my hometown, and they IMMEDIATELY told me that it was most likely cancer, just by feeling her GI tract. Two and a half months later, I had to put down my fur baby after trying chemo. Maybe she still would have passed away if they diagnosed her earlier, but I think she would have had a greater chance of successful treatment. I will NEVER take another pet SPH. Oh, and they ignored me and didn't fax my cat's records to Embrace Pet Insurance, which I needed because they couldn't reimburse me for her $15K of chemo. Thankfully, the other vet sent them all her records, so I ended up getting reimbursed. Thanks for nothing, SPH.

Lethargic, not eating and not relieving herself. I called the office on Saturday 9/8/18, where the office hours started at 8am. Long story short they were unable to receive incoming calls (really?) and the answering machine prompted you to leave a message and that you will be contacted. Nope, not one call have I received since that date. We needed to bring my dog in to the vet ASAP, and we went to Vestal Animal Hospital (emergency services), there they were able to take an X-ray. We left there with antibiotics medication in hopes that my dog would get better. This wasn't the case; by Thursday we needed to get her seen again. We tried calling Southside Pet Hospital (her DR!) and they said they were double booked.... Sorry. We had been going here for 12 years with my dog and all we could get was that sorry response. We did not receive any apathy for our dog, nor a follow-up call to see how our dog was doing. Needless to say we were able to get in the Vestal Animal Hospital where they did blood work on our dog. The next step resulted in further testing of our dog due to the results and a ultrasound was recommended. We then traveled to Colonial Vet Hospital in Ithaca where they performed the ultrasound. Sad news is that my dog has cancer (lymphoma), most likely. Eventually my dog was seen by Dr. Ryer where he prescribed prednisolone and appetite increase pills. We called about a week later to let them know that she was still having issues defecating. They said try Cornell as they can't do anything for her! No calls after to see how she was doing. She has recently crossed over to the Rainbow Bridge where she is free from pain. Southside Pet Hospital's lack of compassion and unprofessional- ism about returning calls and caring for their patients is disappointing. Now that I look back on the yearly meetings with the DR, he never did recommend any certain tests for senior dogs (my dog is 12). I just feel like maybe if he was a little more pro-active my dog may not be in this position right now. I WOULD NOT recommend this DR or office for the care of your pet long term. You should never have to be turned away from your own DR's office! Update: As of today this office has not called to check on the health of my dog, knowing her prognosis. I started going to Companions 2 years ago and have followed the very many positive reviews from google. I urge you to make up your mind based on a neutral opinion. The pros- They are inexpensive compared to others, they get you in faster than others and prioritize the needs of the pet over their own office hours and costs. The vet is amazing and volunteers a lot of her time to the other organizations around here and shelters. She will always help you if you are her client and in a jam. She's loving and takes her time; always remembers you and your pet and has gone out of her way. She is very easy-going and personal with her customers. The cons- As a low cost vet, she is limited in her services but will refer you if she can't handle what is needed for your pet. She works from her home; I live in JC and don't consider her area a 'shady' area, as has been commented but more a city area with industrial around off of Glenwood. Her home is her work and her life is animals. It can be a negative first impression to those that would be able to easily afford the higher end services of another vet. I see her as my physician 40 years ago; set in his ways with old school practice and old school prices. That's up to you whether you like it or not in all objectivity. I am not a fan of her receptionist and this is where the negative reviews are warranted. I have had to become very firm and thick-skinned with her. If I would not have become insistent on her following up with the organization I was adopting a cat from, I would never have gotten my cat. She never remembers my pets, frequently will come off as short with me when I call until she realizes that I am a current client and can never get charts organized; I usually try to go over there and persist because the vet will immediately know what I'm talking about. Record keeping and quick identification are not her strong suit. The receptionist does work alone with a large caseload and tries to be personable while you are waiting there and will immediately lose the curtness when she can understand you are a client or if you firmly but in a nice way let her know you won't stand for it. However, I have found much, much worse with way more frustrations in the local vet receptionists that I've tried to call before finding Companions. I haven't run into the other reason for the negative reviews but have read this elsewhere as well; the restriction on breeds which she won't care for. This is something I can believe and can't say the motivation but she does have many animals around her clinic that are her own who she has taken in and they are cats so I can possibly see this as a reason. The other reason is that this is her home and she already fits many of her clients in with her hours and she is working with a lot of limits in her practice that she is up front in saying when you talk to them the first time. I simply recommend to not take your pet there if she doesn't treat them. I have exotics and other types of animals that can't be treated at her practice but take the ones that she can treat here. I understand their rules and work with that-it's frustrating, I'll grant you that, but I've lived in other states and countries and this area has a lot more limits for pet care then I've ever seen in my life before; whether for the price, the wait time or just general things they will or will not tolerate. Learning to work with that. I currently have another vet that I use besides Kathy for my exotics but it was very, very difficult finding a vet here that would see them. If you have cats or dogs that she does treat (which I can note are most any but a few of the larger breeds) and you can't afford to pay over $300 easy to start for a spay or neuter, can run into other regular things that pets run into which other vets would either not have the time to see quickly or charge a lot, I do highly recommend her. I would not take my chihuahuas or the rescue cat we now have anywhere else. Sorry for the length but wanted to be very neutral in this with my experiences.

Like I said, great vet but it's awful how she can reject breeds and reject us for seeing someone else for that breed. She won't even see our sick cat and threw our files out. The only reason he got the job is because his father, Dr. H, and his mother, Debbie, own the practice. That's nepotism right there. At least, some of the nurses, have more empathy and compassion for the pets and their owners, than Dr. Horowitz and his son, Joshua. Like most doctors, they already have one foot out the door. On our latest visit, Joshua, only saw our dog for barely even 5 minutes. Listened to his heart and touched him in a few spots and then ordered some tests and out the door he went. Didn't care to listen to what was going on with our pet and was actually even rude. I considered making a complaint to the office manager but it's useless, since as mentioned above, his father and mother own the practice. Of course, they will side with their own son.
