I adopted my dog from the humane society. It's been at least two years since. She is the most fabulous well mannered fine temperament family members. The humane society staff aide in our pairing and socializing her with me and our first rescue. It was a great way to introduce her to our pak. We have adopted 2 kittens and now a dog through Broome County Humane Society. Our dog flew over several hundred miles to come to the shelter from another shelter. He was stuck in Florida. Dear everybody who cares about animals: I know what it is like to be on the receiving end when companion animals are no longer wanted. The calls never stop. There is always another dog chained outside in God-forsaken weather never receiving the light of day of loving attention. Another feral mama cat and her kittens are living in filth. The elderly owner sadly passed away and no one can adopt the 12 year old dog or cat. The calls never stop. I strongly urge everyone to get behind The Humane Society on Conklin Avenue in Binghamton, New York by donating cash and volunteering to help when all hands-on-deck are needed. I was hesitant to go to the Humane Society since I have heard some negative stories about in the the past. I am so glad I went! The environment is very nice for the cats. They are gathered in rooms instead of cages. I had heard that the paperwork and background checks were daunting, but found that was not true. My husband picked out a cat but when we took it home that day, we soon found out that it was VERY upset to be with us (diarrhea, vomiting, peeing on the rug, hiding). It was much happier at the Humane Society so we returned it after a couple of days. We then picked out another cat, they didn't charge us &, once again, the cat came home with us the very same day. The cat had been fixed, was up to date on her shots, had been tested for common cat diseases, had been micro-chipped, and had been treated for fleas. The price they charged was very reasonable. They gave us a small bag of toys for the cat, and a certificate for 1 free vet visit at one of the local vets. The cat has been a joy and we are so happy to have her. Thank you to the Humane Society for being so pleasant, so easy to work with and for treating the animals so well. read more

Updated 2/22/2017 - As promised, I'm updating my review with new information. I've had the opportunity to visit the Broome County Humane Society and meet with their director, Karen Matson and several of the staff members. I got to witness first hand the awesome work they do here. God's work, in miserable conditions. They do a better job than expected under the conditions they work in. I had the opportunity to speak with Natalie at the front desk and she was phenomenal. I also had the pleasure of meeting and being assisted by kennel attendant Kayleigh. She is so sweet, gentle and compassionate toward the animals in her care and a professional. I was happy to hear the BCHS received many neglected dogs from a local breeder. The BCHS vetted these dogs, cared for them and sought out breed specific experienced rescue groups from across the country to assist these dogs in their rehabilitation. As a Keeshond owner with puppy mill dog rehabilitation experience, Tri-State Keeshond Rescue from Texas contacted me and a rescue colleague to assist them in this shelter pull and transport. I saw first hand the wonderful work the BCHS does and the dedication of its personnel. Please accept my heartfelt thanks for giving me the opportunity to meet you and see who you are and what you do day in and day out. It was a pleasure working with you and transporting 7 of the Keeshonden you saved to TKR. Those 7 Kees have been turned over to TKR and transported to their fosters in Kansas and Texas, where they are beginning their new lives, and rehabilitation. I appreciate what you do day in and day out and I thank you from the bottom of my heart for the furry lives you save and the human lives you change in such a positive way. Unfortunately I have never adopted here, I had a mastiff I rescued dog catcher was easily bribed. But I live in the neighborhood people abandon animal's have taken lots of suscidal cats and friendly dog's staff is great don't buy rescue the shelter needs room. read more

We did not like being held off while a committee considered our application to adopt, especially because we donate monthly to the shelter. I threatened not to adopt at all and permission quickly came through. I took my 92 year-old husband to choose a cat. We went to 2 rooms full of cats, but not cramped. When my husband entered the second room, a cat ran out and he chose the runner, an 8 month old cat who had not been at the shelter for long. He is a darling. We would adopt from the shelter again. read more

Our nervous little pup was treated to a calm, professional and careful grooming at The Humane Society, and we couldn't be happier with the service we received. The dog is not used to being around others, but the groomer (Joan?) was patient, soothing him as she worked quickly to give him a wonderful haircut and nail trim. In just a half hour, he was looking handsome, and was feeling comfortable on the trimming table and in the bath! Considering that the price of the grooming also helps support the shelter, it was a bargain indeed!! I have paid much more and been far less satisfied. We will continue to bring our dogs to the Humane Society for grooming. read more

Horrible! Traumatic experience, wouldn't go back here for the world! The process of trying to adopt from here is terrible as they do not get back to you in a timely manner. They also keep their misplaced dogs in their own homes while the shelter is being "renovated for flooding" and found out a lot of these homes are very unfriendly. Our almost dog was left in a cold garage in 27 degree weather for two weeks while we waited for no phone call to come. read more

The rooms might be small and cramped, but the level of care housekeeping provides is amazing. Plus, these are the coolest party animals that I have ever met in my life. These dogs and cats want to hang out no matter what I'm listening too or watching on tv. Despite the amazing staff, there isn't a lot they can do about the accommodations. So you should totally come down and adopt an animal friend (or two) so you guys can hang out and party forever! read more

I adopted my cat from there in 2010 and he is absolutely wonderful; came to me already neutered, with shots, and having been FLV/FIV tested. Definitely check them out if you're looking to add a member to your forever home, these animals could really use a second chance at the good life! read more

The new facility is amazing! The old facility was out of date and not too pleasant for the eye but the staff is phenomenal. The new facility is designed for better serving the animals. My husband and I volunteer to walk dogs 1 morning a week. We can each walk one or two dogs which lets the staff get right to cleaning and providing fresh water. We go fairly early as we know the dogs are crazy to get out to do their business after trying to hold it all night.
