A local Viennese friend of ours brought us here for coffee and cake. The coffee was excellent and the cake was the best carrot cake I've ever had. Neither was as "sugary" as you might expect in the States, but I consider that a positive. If you love McDonald's coffee (I don't) and donuts (I do love donuts), this might not be the place for you. Finally, I am sitting and having three pastries and trying each one after the other with a cup of espresso. It took 2 hours of driving from Brno. But it wasn't just for Dremel as I have to take my flight back from Vienna. Driving inside the city took an effort and more so to find a parking spot and then get to a tabac store to buy the sticker. After I had parked only then I noticed while walking to Demel that I had missed the garage. Oh well. But what about the pastries and coffee? It was more of a pilgrimage and the revelation was that it may be the oldest and the best we had back then and strongly recommend visiting if you are visiting Vienna, however, the world has passed this place by in terms of gourmet quality. It's one thing to stick with the heritage but still a place needs to be kept maintained. The sitting area and the rooms need work. Entrance is dingy and dark. For example, the Central cafe goes quite some time back too but they have kept their place lively and can have the same or may I dare to say better gastronomic experience. On the other hand, Demel looks and feels less commercial and more like a mom and pop store and maybe I would want that to change. I did like the fact how you can see the chefs make the pastries behind the glass wall. Just for that it deserves a visit. It's amazing how much pastry they can make with amazing consistency. To select the pastries you go to the side room and an attendant writes them down on a piece of paper that you can then hand it over to your server. Well organized. I also tried their appetizer sandwiches and they were good too. I do feel guilty of waste as I shouldn't have ordered three pastries as I couldn't finish them. Got the topfenstrudel and a chocolate cake/ Nuget/praline cake (can't remember the name) with a cafe latte and earl grey tea between me and my husband. It was good! The dessert and coffee is more memorable than the meals. For breakfast I got the scrambled eggs with sausage. My husband got the noodle soup with beef and chicken. I go here everytime I'm in Vienna. I love the bulding and the cakes. The staff is kind of...well overlooking a bit, but that' fine. I don't care. The cakes are really amazing, they are real pieces of art. And of course they taste great. Everything tastes as it should, real artisan stuff. I usually go here on Mondays since during the weekend there is a long line of people waiting for the table. Sometimes the line goes all the way downstairs and to the street. The coffee is good too, but my thing is the cakes. The only thing that is far from perfect are the toilettes. I expected them to be as neat and posh as the café itself. Great disappointment. They really need a serious repair. But that's the only downside of this place. If you decide to ignore the tourists and just enjoy the cakes... I recommend the Maroni one. Yumzah. read more

One of Vienna's famous coffee houses, Café Demel is a delightful spot near the Spanish Riding School. Their esterhazy torte is absolutely delicious, probably the second best one I've ever had. This was our favorite dessert place on our trip. The servers are a bit snotty, but that's expected when you're dealing with tourists. I got the lemon tart, sacher tart, and cheesecake. Loved everything I ordered and I wish I could have it again. The front of the store has a little shop, and I bought three jams and one of each chocolate bar they were selling. The jams are delicious--tad expensive but very much worth it. If you are in Vienna, you need to come here to complete your visit. read more

Per the trip to Vienna, a coworker highly recommended checking out this cafe for its pastries. Being that our party of four and a five-year old went a little later in the day, we opted to get lunch as well. The biggest disappointment and turn off to this place is its horrendous service (although I did notice the ladies were friendly to those who spoke the language). It was rude from waitress to waitress to the third waitress and being from NYC, it was still a pretty severe service in comparison. As for food, ordered a variety of dishes from small sandwiches to sausages to goulash, etc. And other than the shredded horseradish "sauce", everything else was pretty average. Same with the coffee and some kind of ice cream mixed with liquid chocolate. So this was not a bill I was happy to pay for regarding the service or food (I'm usually semi-content if a restaurant at least hits one of the two in terms of quality). I almost still wanted to order the pastry, which you have to go select at the "buffet" where they give you a number of a ticket in which you then have to hand to your waitress. But after being ignored multiple times and even after having got the ticket, I said "no way". This place falls straight into the unfortunate overrated "famed" spots. Maybe the service is better strictly on the first floor compared the sit downs on the higher floors. And maybe the pastries significantly outshine the savory meals. Can't speak to that. Note: Not child-friendly. She brought over four sets of the plate, fork, and spoon. When we asked for a fifth set, she looks at us and counts the four adults saying with an attitude "but I gave you the correct amount of utensils" while looking at the kid using his fork. I'm sure the house torte would have been amazing if the woman behind the buffet had actually been paying attention to me instead of looking at Facebook. I know we get distracted by messages. I actually had to say to her, "I know your Facebook messages are important to you right now, but you're at work and I could really use your help." Overall a good place for breakfast and to let your sweet tooth take over. Service is slow and not exactly friendly. Bit of a wait. For a table you must go through the main floor and up a set of stairs to get in line. We had heard about the two places that you must try for sachertorte and Demel is supposedly the best (the other being Cafe Sacher). We went on a Saturday afternoon and had to wait a bit for a seat outside. We arrived a little after 5pm to learn that the kitchen was closing and that we couldn't order anything off of the menu, but we could go inside and choose from the cakes. Great food. Don't fire the chefs, fire the service staff My friend and I came to get a nice drink and dessert today and we were treated horribly by the staff the second we arrived. We waited a few minutes for them to even acknowledge us when we wanted to ask if there was a table for two available and they wouldn't even look at us when we were a foot away from them and deliberately avoided eye contact. We finally asked about a table and they said we could look outside but they couldn't promise anything. All the tables were full which was fine but people were waiting for their checks for over 20 minutes which was ridiculous as there were many others wanting to have some of the amazing food. The waitresses just didn't give a s**t about them. We finally got a table and the waitresses were the rudest that I have ever experienced. We had about 40 minutes till they closed, we only wanted a drink and a slice of cake, and they didn't want to serve us, saying they were closing soon. We got our drink and cake and then they brought the bill with about 20 minutes to close and demanded that we paid then and there when we had barely started eating. Then when we still had about half of our drinks left and some food they said "we would like to close" and it was 6:50. We wanted to enjoy the meal that we paid A LOT for! The service in Europe generally isn't as great as it is back home but this was unreal how horrible we were treated. This is a nice, more expensive place and it is completely unacceptable for them to treat customers how they treated us. If I was their boss they would have been fired there on the spot. Demel had the single best pastry we ate on our three day tour of Vienna patisseries and coffeehouses: the Mozartkuppel ("Mozart Dome"), a chocolate mousse, pistachio marzipan and nougat confection covered in dark chocolate. It seems like Demel's excellent attempt to upgrade the ubiquitous Mozartkugel candy sold in every corner shop. Enjoying that pastry while sitting outside on their patio overlooking the Spanish Riding School was a perfect way to spend a Sunday afternoon. They also have plenty of indoor seating in formal, wood-paneled rooms. To top it off, the bakers work behind glass so you can watch experts performing their magic. Demel may be a tad pricier then other coffeehouses but for the views and the quality was well worth it to me. read more

Sadly, what could of been a nice experience was ruined because our waitress at Demel made it very clear to our table that if we did not have the same skin color as she (white), she would not want to take our order. One person in our party of four was singled out and purposefully ignored as we ordered with a special emphasis as she repeated three orders back to us. She did, after prodding, take our fourth order and was haughty during the rest of our visit. It's easy for me never to frequent Demel again as I was a tourist visiting Vienna, but I want to make it very clear to Demel's management that this is not and never will be okay. It was a good experience trying different types of cakes. I find it very humid and stuffy in there even during the winter time. Minus one star for that! This place is popular, so it's packed with a lot of people. Service is good, and if you can't get a place at the cafe. You can also order your cakes or tortes to go. I think the one time cafe experience is good enough for me. In terms of deco, I've seen much fancier cafes. I also bought some chocolates downstairs by the gift section area to the right. read more

A must-visit for anyone going to Vienna The cafe was classy, the cake and coffee were out of this world, and the crowds were terrible. We went on a weekday, as we had heard the crowds were bad, and the crowds were still bad. We managed to get a table withing 10 minutes, though, so not much to complain about there. The service wasn't that great, considering Demel's classy feel, history, and reputation, but we got what we wanted fairly quickly (4 coffees and 9 slices of cake - yes, 9). The coffee was fairly good - not as good as the ones in Italy, but on par with German coffee. And the cakes - oh the cakes. Everyone in my family, especially my mom, is very fond of cakes and pastries, so we went on a rampage (we actually had no lunch - went on an empty stomach just so we could stuff our faces). I can't remember what we had other that my dad had a very good coffee and chocolate cake, my mother loved the Passionsfruchttorte, and I had the Best. Chocolate cake. EVER. It was literally all chocolate - the cake itself was moist, "tender", and chocolate, the filling was some kind of chocolate mousse/fudge, and the outside was covered by a chocolate fondant-looking-but-not-tasting...thing. And the best part was that this cake wasn't too sweet at all, not like the usual crap in North America - I think they used dark, or at least bittersweet chocolate, which means that it was rich, creamy, and just sweet enough for the cake not to be bitter. This is actually the norm for European cakes - sweetness is used to enhance, not dominate and kill off the cake (imagine the cake shock when my family moved back to Canada - terrible, just terrible). This place is adorable and I feel like a 19th century Viennese princess whenever I come here (once in '98, and twice in '12). The ambience is classic and beautiful. I went here because Rick Steve's recommended it on his audio tour. I had great service and the patio was a nice place to people watch. The desserts are very pretty to look at and you can wander about the restaurant and take pictures of the pastry chefs as they work. Unfortunately the sacher torte was terrible. It was super dry and flavorless. I've actually had a better ones out of one of those supermarket cases. We toured Vienna for a few days on April 2018 and of course tried to taste the "Demel" at the weekend. After standing in a long line we were sent to the back of the shop where another line stood before the stairs to the second floor. Although we could see beyond the glass in the strudel production process, none of the restaurant staff was there When a table cleared and we sat down, one of the waitresses remembered to approach us in a very unpleasant talk - but not to accept an invitation but to tell us to leave the table because she claimed no one had sat us. That is true as until then about 40 minutes no one addressed or contacted us. .There are a lot of cafes recommended such as Cafe Central and Landman coffee We left Denel and will not return to it again never read more
