I think when dining at Timeout Market, a certain set of expectations needs to be in place. Namely, the food you're getting is probably not going to be the best version of what the restaurant is and the price will definitely be on the higher end. Demera is no exception to that. I've dined at their regular brick and mortar restaurant and also have eaten plenty of Ethiopian restaurants when I used to live in the DC area. For me, the food here is a a little below what you'd get at the regular location, and for $18 for the combo, it definitely feels a bit lacking on quantity. But that's the thing with dining out at Timeout Market. You don't go here expecting to have an amazing meal. Especially when you're in the west loop with so many great spots. You dine here because you're with picky and/or indecisive eaters and you're just trying to hangout and eat some food. There's so many vendors here there's a little something for everyone even if it's not the best version of it. And so for that, I can't really fault Demera since it was still a solid meal. The meat combo was well seasoned (I prefer the chicken over the beef if you were to pick one), the mushroom tibs was fine, I enjoyed what I got. read more

I've never made it up to Demera on all my trips to Chicago over the years, so I was glad to be able to try their delicious Ethiopian dishes from their Time Out Market stall. We ordered the vegetable messob, a combo platter which came with kik alicha (yellow split peas), misir wot (spicy red lentils in berbere sauce), tikle gomen (cabbage and carrots), and injera. The vegetable combo is usually my go-to when trying any new Ethiopian spot, and this was great. They have some non-vegetarian dishes as well if you're looking for something else. I know I've said this before, but if you're in Chicago for quick work trip and need to find all the foodie things in one place, Time Out is your ticket. I always wanted to try Ethiopian as it has been suggested by Yelpers and non-Yelpers alike. The service was quick and super friendly, only real downside was the small portion in serving given the price point. Grabbed an injera roll and found it OK. The fresh injera bread had a nice texture and sour flavor, but the filling had imbalanced texture and spice level for me. The spice level started out mild to medium, but builds and blew out my palate over time. There's pieces of cabbage that are rather large chunks raw, that add some texture but get chewy. First time trying Ethiopian food did not disappoint!! I got the Doro Wot and wow, such an explosion of flavors. This dish is basically a chicken stew with hard boiled eggs plus collard greens and a crepe-like bread on the side. The stew was kind of spicy but not overwhelmingly so. The spices they use make this dish taste very unique. Never had anything like this before! I most certainly want to try more Ethiopian dishes and will check out Demera's main storefront. read more

Got food here at Time Out because it looked the best. Got the combo with two meat and one veggie curry - doro wot (spicy chicken) and siga alicha (beef). I didn't think either one was beef, so I'm a bit confused now. Cabbage and carrot didn't have any flavor, egg didn't either. Injera was chewy and not too sour. A lot of food, price came out to be around $25 somehow even though the menu said $19! read more

Demera at Time out Market is a wonderful Ethiopian oasis. Get ready for a delightful taste festival! We ordered the Sambussas, the Vegetarian Messob, and the Ingudai Tibs. The sanbussas were crispy packages of lentil goodness served with a delightful honey awaze sauce. Yum! The veggie messob combined several great tastes on a bed of injera. The kik alicha was a delicious mix of yellow peas stewed with onions, garlic, and turmeric. So good! The misir wat was a nicely spicy portion with red lentils stewed in a rich berbere sauce. Yay! The last part of the veggie messob was the tikle gomen with its chopped cabbage and carrots cooked with onions, garlic, ginger, and turmeric. This was so tasty and is always one of our favorites when we have the good fortune to eat at an Ethiopian restaurant. We also had a delectable side of the ingudai tibs which mixed sauteed mushrooms with garlic, onions, and ginger. We used the injera, with its sourdough flavor, to wrap up tantalizing bites of the different parts of this great meal. We loved each of our choices and will definitely be returning to Demera many times in the future to try more of the tempting options on their menu. read more

So glad to see Demera at Time Out Market.I enjoy going to their Uptown location whenever I go to Montrose beach.LOVE their food.Soon as I saw them in Fulton Market I knew I just HAD TO eat there.Food did not disappoint.Much smaller menu than their Uptown restaurant but that is to be expected since this place is much smaller.I work nearby so I'll definitely be returning.I eat at Time Out Market regularly.Totally recommend giving Demera a try. read more

Everything tasted great however the portion of my main dish, Doro Wat was disappointing. I paid over $18 (with tax) and I couldn't get a drum stick or a thigh? It was literally half of a drumstick. Unfortunately I took it to go, so I was unable to see it until I made it back to the suburbs. The cabbage and carrot side had great flavor, but the carrots were a little rubbery. I'm used to a softer texture when I get this side at another spot. The injera was awesome. read more

I've been eating at the original Demera's for years. I love Ethiopian food but don't get a chance to get all the way out there very often. They used to have a booth in the french market before pandemic. They kept saying they were going to reopen in the French Market whenever I asked then they finally sent out a mass email saying they were reopening in French Market in October (2022). I showed up on the announced opening day, and there was no sign that they'd even started to move back into the market. I tried again several more times over the next couple weeks but nothing. Then their website said they were going to reopen Nov 1. I showed up again and still not open. Then their website said they'd be opening on Dec 1... yup, I showed up and nothing. Then in January their website showed a new location in Timeout Market instead of French Market and said they'd opened there. But they weren't actually there and when I checked their website a few days later that location listing was removed from their website. THEN Timeout Market sent out an email saying that Demera's was opening on Feb 6th. I'd lost hope this time, but went out this week to try yet again and was shocked that they were finally open. I was really happy that they had finally opened and very excited to order the vegetarian sampler (all foods I'd had from their main restaurant before) and the brussel sprouts which were new to me. The brussel sprouts looked like they'd been roasted or grilled so they looked really tasty, but when I ate one I found they were soggy like they'd been steamed afterwards so they were mushy. To make it worse, they were also room-temperature. Even though the food was served when I ordered it, everything was cold. Not refrigerator cold, but barely above room temperature. This made the cabbage, brussel sprouts, and lentils really unpleasant to eat. I gave up after a few bites and threw the whole thing away and took an Uber out to a completely different restaurant to eat. After all these years, I've given up on this restaurant which really makes me sad. read more
