Superb superb superb! Have no other words to write about this place. Awesome variety in the menu and awesome preparation. You cannot call an outing an outing without going to this place. Very convenient to reach. Located at a central location near cinema, food, bar and what not. Could have made it a bit more clean though! Must try their coconut milk. The dessert and portion size was great but the service was slow. We noticed a line up a desserts waiting to be brought to the tables, ours was sitting there for at least 5mins so when it made it to our table the waffle was cold. Second time. The cafe Americano and coffee we were served were cold by the time our mountainous dessert came. The Americano and coffee were very good but when the served offered to refill my wife's coffee she informed me that she was not allowed to top up my Americano. So I had a $12 dessert and $6 with if coffee but I'm not allowed a bit of coffee topup? Really Management? That is silly. Give the waitresses some leeway and discretion. First, my son & I waited at the entrance to be seated. Minutes later, we were silently beckoned by a curt hand gesture to follow a person with a headset. Then we were crammed into a window seat behind a pretentious party of two tables. (90% of the restaurant was empty. Seats were plentiful. Why we spent the meal stuck looking at someone's behind as they stood with their back to us talking to one of the tables they were with the entire time is beyond me.) Signalling for a manager to get a better table proved to be redundant. After getting over the sticker shock of the prices, once we were able to acquire and maintain eye contact with a young server, we ordered a small $12-$13 dollar ice cream sandwich and a nearly $4 cup of regular coffee. We were done in minutes. Another wait for the bill...this took awhile. Fed up, I stacked all of our dishes as the end of the table, walked up to the counter with my debit card out and promptly paid. We were told Caffe Demetre was a good place to go. We waited years to be disappointed. Never again! The Starbucks in Indigo Chapters at the Oshawa Center was friendlier, faster, fresher and far more satisfying. read more

Ambiance is perfect, servers are friendly & efficient, the ice cream & crepes are really good! I just find the cakes here a bit too sweet. If they can tone down the sugar on those, it would be perfect. Otherwise a very good dessert place, will come back for more! read more

I went here with a friend and they seriously have such big portions. If I didn't love sugar as much as I do, I would absolutely share a dish. They are great for groups and dates! The staff took a long time to come to our table, we waiting 15minutes before we even got menus or asked if we wanted a drink. There was no one that greated us at the door, we just waited around and when no one came we just sat down where there were seats. I got a hot chocolate and waffles with fresh fruit. It was good, the waffle tasted like it was frozen and than warmed up or maybe a box-batter. You seriously can't go wrong with whipped cream and strawberries. Their hot chocolate was more luke-warm than hot. I love my beverages steaming opposed to room temperature. It took another 20min for the person to come back to our table to see how we were so I couldn't ask for it to be warmed up more. If it was hot, I'm sure it would be delicious. I don't think I would go to this location again since I was not happy, however, I would definitely go to the same restaurant chain again probably in Toronto. read more

Very poor service. We were sat an hour before closing. Nobody came to take our order for 25 minutes and in that time people who were sat after us ordered, ate and left. It took a while for the food to arrive, and it was cold when it should have been warm. The server finally cleared our plates after we were done for over 10 minutes, and didn't bring our bills for another 10 minutes after. They didn't offer any change until we asked for it. We ended up leaving half an hour after closing due to the staff prioritizing on closing instead of their customers. The whole experience of a quick dessert room an hour and a half. Will not be back after years of going and enjoying it. read more

The last couple of times I went I noticed a decline in service; the waiters take longer, orders are spaced out (one person will get their dessert 10 minutes before the other) and particular waiters seem to not show effort. Good (pricey) desserts, but not great customer service. read more

Not sure what happened on our most recent visit a few weeks ago. Benefit of the doubt given Covid; however, service timing was terrible - orders came very spaced out, so much so that I ate my order because I had to before it melted, before my daughter got her order. I observed this happening at a few other tables as well. It was a Saturday evening, maybe they were understaffed. Staff that served us were friendly and tried to apologize multiple times to many patrons. Our orders were mediocre at best, crepes didn't seem freshly made like in the past and it seemed that orders must have sat for a bit as the sauce was heavily soaked through and soggy... ice cream is ice cream, so that was good. I'd say these folks haven't got a full handle on how to pivot their service to support new reality, not the staff's fault... not sure we'll try again anytime soon, maybe next summer, as there's many other spots that have adjusted for patio service... read more

There was no line up at 7pm on Saturday night which was great. The service however needs to improve. Got seated right away but didnt get to see a server until 15 mins later to take our order. (The server actually went to serve the next table who sat after us and they were still looking at their menu, meanwhile we already had our menu closed ready to order) then 10 mins gone by before we get water. Seems a bit not organize, deserts are all sitting there waiting to be delivered to tables, and this is only 85% full not even a full house yet. But that's when you get food in a timely manner or even water without waiting 20 minutes. What's worse is that no one came to even talk to us for about 15 minutes after taking our drink orders. I love Caffe Demetre and will always continue to go back but this review is specifically for this WHITBY location who needs to work on CERTAIN staff members (perhaps a lesson or two will work). And judging by other reviews, it's not the first time a wonderful place has gotten a less than stellar review because of a sour individual. Monday night, not busy at all, at 9pm - an hour before closing. I was with my family and we ordered for almost $100. Our waitress was wonderful the whole time, thank you so much! Reason for the 1 star - around 9:55, they turned off the lights (not so subtle hint to leave so let's start finishing up, we get it) and another waitress who seemed to be the one in charge at that time started clearing up our tables which is fine but then she attempted to clear up drinks that we weren't even done with! Drinks we had paid for and were still enjoying! My cousin was still HOLDING hers and when she tried to TAKE IT OUT OF HER HAND. she had to tell the girl "umm I'm not done with that" to which the reply was "you know we are closed now right?" RUDE! Perhaps this was her first job in a FOOD establishment (or ever) but I have never been expected to clear out from a place that has just struck it's closing hour if I am very near to finishing up! We know how to be considerate, i mean we wouldn't walk in 5 min to closing and stay for hours but she was being ridiculously rude. She continued to rush us out even though it had just turned 10pm and was not apologetic at all! Worst experience I have had at Demetres. I have been going there for years and the service has always been great. Today I felt invisible to the staff as they did not show any interest to seat us or serve us. I had to be asked to be seated and when I was I was still given no service. The food was good, however, for the price it is not worth it. The goods that they provide consist mainly of treats such as crepes, ice cream, ice capps etc. and are really only good if you have a strong sweet tooth. This restaurant is not just somewhere that you would go to eat every day. One thing that they do have going for them is that They are very conveniently located right next to the Empire Theater and pretty much the rest of Whitby, ON's entertainment district. To finish what set me off the most about their establishment is that, when I was there, I was in a rush to eat because I had a movie that started in 10 minutes. I enjoyed my food and left to the movie. Without thinking, I forgot a pair of jeans that I had bought earlier that day, there and when I called back later that night, when I realized that I had forgotten them, they said that if I did not come and get them by 1 a.m. (Which was hard for me to do given that I do not drive and it was pouring rain) they would throw them out. I like coming here to chill with some friends for late night coffee on the weekend. Normally get the Americano double. Dessert wise I've had the Black & Tan and the Mochahotas. Both are chocolate decadent. Waiting for a table for large groups can take a while. They won't sit you unless your whole party is there. Other than that the service is great. It is very unfortunate that the food here is good because the service is horrible. I have had many bad experiences here. The last time we were there my friend had a small cup of pretzel bites from the movie theatre and the caffe Demetre staff came over and said that she could not have it in the store because it was advertising another company's food. So they confiscated the cup and said they would put it under the front desk. We ended out being so annoyed that we walked out. But that isn't even the worst one. The worst was when a group of us were sat at the table in the corner. And then forgotten about. We waited for 10 minutes and no one came to even see of we wanted anything to drink. It probably would have been longer but I went and flagged down a waitress. We all ordered a glass of water and a dessert. It took 20 minutes to get our desserts and still did not get water. I had to go and ask where our water was and was only then told that there were no clean glasses. So when we finally got water we had been seated for 40 minutes and were done our desserts. We have had many great visits but during a recent visit the server didn't even arrive at table for 15 minutes.when they did arrive the coffee and food took took forever. When finally seated I watched people making the food repeatedly drop items on the counter and put it back on the plate. Worst experience ever. I went with a crowd of almost 30. They would not take reservations without a credit card. Not! So ok but we did not arrive all at once. I was told they cannot seat us until there was enough to fill a table. I was scolded for being in the aisle but was not allowed to take a seat at a table. There were many tables empty at the time. I was provided my bill without being asked if I was done which annoyed me because I wanted to order another drink. My daughter hadn't even received her sundae yet so I didn't get the urgency of paying the bill. Meanwhile another lady at our table hadn't even given her order yet. Then this tree was there crowding our table so it wasn't even comfortable. Who wants to sit at a table in a restaurant with a tree branch in their hair. The manager was just plain rude. Have never experienced such crazy bad service. We would have all left and gone to dairy queen but we were waiting for the rest of our large party. Would never go back. I had to give one star but really this place is zero stars. read more

I have been here around 40 times. Even though the prices increased and the menu changed, the food is exactly the same and worth every penny. The open kitchen is nice, I love to watch the chefs. The restaurant is open very late, which is great if you're going after seeing a film next door. The fruit always seems to be tasty even if it's not in season. Came in and sat down after waiting only a few minutes. Once we sat, 15 minutes went by and no one greeted us. I eventually called over a waiter and he apologetically took our order. We ordered 2 coffees and a waffle desert. 20 minutes, still not even a coffee. I walked up to the front and asked for our coffees. About 5 minutes later they came. About 15 minutes after that, our desert came. As it arrived, our server told us he was leaving for the night and someone else would take over. It seemed strange because the place was literally packed to the brim and they were going to lose 1 of the only 3 people serving the full restaurant. It has now been over an hour SINCE our waiter said he was leaving. No one else has come over to us. Not once. Even now sitting with our plates piled up and coats on, we haven't even been offered a bill. This place is good, but completely under staffed and has some of the worst customer service I've ever experienced. read more

The desserts are definitely fabulous (very tasty ingredients and huge portion sizes!), the wait staff was wonderful...but it was the owner or manager or whoever he is that is a real jerk. Been there on 2 separate occasions on a weeknight early in the week (such as tonight, a Monday), and shortly after we finished eating, I saw him out of the corner of my eye telling the waitress to basically "encourage" us to leave by clearing the table etc. And when another waitress offered to refill our water glasses, I saw him scold her for obviously making us stay longer...the joke is there were maybe 15 people in the whole place, 6 of which were OUR group of friends!
