She didn't end up making it, but the staff was able to give me a more than fair equivalent for the Academy tuition, already above and beyond just at the check in expereince! Academy started in the classroom to learn the basics. Surprisingly, the information dump was not overwhelming and we were lead to the track for a warm up so the staff can study our pre-existing driving habits. At the academy, individual strengths and weaknesses were identified and we got LOTS of laps to practice. I was physically sweaty and tired by the time we finished! Great use of technology, including puzzles that require physical teamwork (the best kind). The owner/operator was a friendly, quirky gentleman who enthusiastically brought us into the story of the room. We had a chance to chat with him afterwards and his next room, The Election, sounds fantastic - wish I was going to be around when it opens! My only gripe about this place was that we found it too easy - we broke the record and escaped in about 25 minutes. That was probably due to having a couple veterans on the team. If this is one of your first rooms (and seeing as I've only found 6 in Milwaukee, it probably is!), I absolutely recommend it. Good times!

Only odd thing was they suggested we create agent names and we wrote them on our sheets but they never came to play. Perhaps that was up to us to embrace more. He has been cooking professionally since the 1970s, and now he owns the Lake Geneva School of Cooking, and teaches hands-on classes for groups and corporate events. I visited with a group of nine people, and we all had a great time. Chef John and his assistants greeted us with a mimosa, and then explained what we'd be doing: help to create a three-course lunch for everyone. Our lunch consisted of a mushroom soup, a beet salad and a baked cinnamon apple topped with ice cream for dessert. Chef John is very much a believer in cooking with the seasons, so the menu will change depending on when you visit. He gets a lot of his produce from the local Lake Geneva farmers market, and other food items from local merchants. Our group split up and tackled one aspect of the meal. I was with the mushroom soup group, and for the most part, the soup was prepared, we just had to put the finishing touches on it and make some cheese croutons to go on top. I would have loved to do a little more of the prep work and cooking, to be honest. But not everyone in my group was as comfortable with cooking as I was. That's the thing with these classes, though: Whether you have a lot of experience with cooking or a little, the classes are informative and approachable, and focus on fun and food. The kitchen that we worked in was well equipped and clean, with lots of room to move around. The kitchen assistants were college kids who were culinary students, which was cool. After we prepared our meal, we all sat down and enjoyed it in the big dining room. Each course was paired with wine. And the best part: The food was delicious! Yay, us! And yay for Chef John, who conducted a wonderful class that ended with a fabulous meal.

I did a work team building activity in the Chicagoland area hosted by Parties That Cook. I'll admit…read moreI seldom cook for myself (if anything I enjoy baking more), but this looked like something fun and I was looking forward to getting to know my colleagues a bit more. From what I can gather, Parties that Cook is a mobile cooking company that goes to different venues in a certain geographic area and hosts cooking classes for groups. Our event was at a community center in one of the Chicago suburbs. The first 30 minutes acted as kind of a mixer; they had an open bar and some cheese and crackers for us to nom on - they also had some music playing which added to the mingling atmosphere. There were a total of six cooking stations, each laid out with a recipe and the ingredients you needed to make the dish. Before we began, chef David went through each station with us, giving an overview of each dish and some hot tips in order for us to be successful. He was great - he had an awesome personality, great sense of humor, and was really helpful. We were split into an even number of groups to cover each station. While the staff did prep some of the more time consuming things for us, most of the work was done by my group and I. We were in charge of making onion, apple, and cheddar tarts topped with honey. The recipe was a great catalyst to get to know one each other better and work as a team - plus the finished product tasted good too. At the end we all got to sit and enjoy the dishes made by all the groups. Overall I had a great time - Parties That Cook definitely was a fun way to work together, get to know each other a bit more, and enjoy tasty food.

Turns out, folks who have known each other for years or just minutes will make new connections when working together over a cutting board or cooking pot. And yes, we prepared our entire meal, from appetizers to dessert. And this was not mac and cheese. The menu was innovative and appropriately challenging. The 90% is not even on all the fees or full price. So on a nearly $90 reservation we received back about $75. We will not be adding our reservation back and will go elsewhere. Upon further thought if they are not honest and up front on pricing, they may be like other prices and cut corners on the ad retired experience as well. If we are driving an hour or more, we'd like it to be worth it. Plus I hate being ripped off.
